Allen Restaurant at the Metropolitan Entertainment Centre
The architecture of the room itself was gorgeous. Beautifully restored to its original vintage feel. However the food was unacceptable. Smallest potions for the price , overdone meat, fishy muscles. The wine was good. I would not recommend or return to eat. Just drinks b4 an MTS event.
Not really impressed overall, meal was not worth the price unfortunately.
My meal was sent back 3 times due to my steak not being cooked as requested. I was also told I could not pick a potato that it had to be chef’s choice. I did not like any of the choices. I was at the Allen for lunch a couple of weeks ago so I thought I would take my family. Even though my meal was wrong staff never suggested anything else or even a complimentary dessert. For 3 of us, the meal was not worth $130(with no alcohol). As well it was very noisy as there was a large event downstairs. The restaurant was empty but yet staff sat us right by the stairwell. I will never be back for supper. Very disappointed.
Our server was excellent very attentive. The atmosphere was awesome. Appys were delicious. The AAA new York was a little off but still tasty. 6 of us dined and everyone was satisfied.
The beautiful décor makes a truly fine dining experience. The staff are very friendly and helpful. The beet salad was very tasty. My wife and I both had the pasta dish. It was beautifully cooked and extremely tasty. We would dine here again as we are interested in trying other dishes on the menu.
Both meals were served cold amd the New York steak was stringy.
We were guests prior to the Paul McCartney’s concert and the dining staff seem over whelmed. We came early at 530 and sat while tables around us who arrived an hour later had dinner.
Our meals were over done and cold.
We asked for bread while we waited, never came!
We asked for high end scotch .. don’t carry.
I specified that it was my partners birthday and preordered dessert. Never came.
Had to re request.
The only upside to dining at the Met was that it is next door to the mts centre.
Would only ever go for drinks.
I also called the day before to reconfirm as I wanted the evening to be perfect and never got a call back.
Great food and great service!
There were 4 of us and only 1 had a meal that was satisfactory. The Prime Rib meal was was free because it was so bad. 2 of us had top sirloin at 34 dollars. One was only 1/2 inch thick and folded over to look thicker. Like a Salisbury steak. Very very disappointed. Won’t recommend and will not go back.
Jack always gives fabulous service with just the right amount of checking in .always a laugh...and a story..he also has given very good advice on what should I have..knows the menu well. Had the French onion soup ...was delicious!!!!
We picked the rooftop patio for our anniversary celebration because we had never been before and wanted a new patio experience
It was perfect
This was my second visit and it was just as awesome as the first. Serving staff are most polite setting the tone for a special meal.
We have been to this restaurant for various occasions and have a fabulous time. The food is fantastic and the service is fabulous. The only thing I would not recommend would be the creme brulee. The first time we had it ... was to die for but unfortunately it has not been consistent and since then it has not been great at all. We have tried various things on the menu and everything else is very flavorful and worth every penny.
Our experience is limited to the Allen Restaurant, not the other areas of the Met. We enjoyed the meal very much and under different circumstances may have rated it much better. I had made reservations for 2 for my wife's birthday and when we arrived (6:30) we were the only couple in the room. We remained the only couple for the rest of the meal. The venue was beautiful - elegant - , the service was excellent and the meal was great but the atmosphere suffered greatly because of the lack of patrons.
We both enjoyed a great piece of roast beef. Tender and tasty but a little too well done for our liking. The server had warned us that our preferred "medium rare" would be more medium than rare, another casualty to lack of patrons I expect.
In discussion with the server it seems that the restaurant is busiest when the Bell/MTS complex has a game or concert scheduled.
I would try this restaurant again for the dinner but would ask about the number of other reservations that had been made around the same time.
Mothers Day Brunch. Extremely disorganized with reservations. Waited standing almost 25 minutes in the Lobby with 20 other people, many in their 90s with nowhere to sit. Not one chair anywhere. Three staff silently pondered the seating charts and clearly didn’t know what they were doing or what to do. After finally being directed to our table,... The place was nearly empty.... couldn’t believe everyone had to wait that long when there was certainly no shortage of tables. The hostess seating us was unfriendly and when we asked a couple questions about how to order etc. She said she didn’t know and we had to ask the server. We waited a long time for a server to finally arrive and didn’t seem to know much more than the Hostess. She pointed to the buffet and we asked her for decaf coffee. She didn’t during the meal so we had to get up to find out where to get condiments. Never checked to see if she could refill coffees etc. Had to clear our own plates off the table to make room for our desert plates. Certainly didn’t win an award for good service todaybim afraid. Nice ambiance .... but the service and food quality were “ehh”!...
Everything was good except the server gave us the wrong bill and rushed us out
Not enough staff for a Mother’s Day brunch.
Food wasn’t great. Service was slow even though Buffett. Couldn’t order another mimosa when I wanted one
The atmosphere was just OK but unfortunately the service was terrible. The buffet food was barely warm. I wouldn't be in a hurry to go back.
The food was fantastic, however going to a buffet you'd usually expect that once you're done a round or two of plates that the staff would come around and collect them, rather than wait until you have numerous stacks of finished plates and have to ask for them to be removed. Another recommendation would be to have staff come around and fill water, or coffee every now and again. Overall, very weak service, but phenomenal food.
The Met has a long-standing history in Winnipeg. It brings a lot of memories back to many Winnipeggers. Love that it has been revived!!
Mother's Day brunch at The Met was fabulous. The food and atmosphere were 5 stars.
Absolutely awesome experience at the Met. We went for the home Jets game on a Saturday on the patio. There was 8 of us. Our server was a young man with longer hair. He was so pleasant and a great server despite the shortage of staff they had and how busy it was for the game. The manager was kind enough to hold our table although we were almost 15 minutes late (traffic on game day was insane)! Our table was in the perfect location. Food came out hot and drinks kept us cool in the sun. AMAZING! Absolutely recommend. THANK YOU MET STAFF YOU ROCK!
The decor is lovely, the staff friendly and the food good. Where our meal was disappointing was in the dessert - there was an event across the street that evening so I'm sure the Allen anticipated that a larger than usual Wednesday evening dinner crowd was probable. That said, there was only one dessert (out of 3 on the menu) available. Creme brulee or nothing. Fine. We ordered that with coffee. The coffee came right away and went cold while we waited over 40 minutes for dessert to be served. When it finally arrived we had no time - the event we were attending started at 7 and it was now 6:45. Good thing we needed only to cross the street!
I will eat here again, but an explanation would have been appreciated. And snafus such as this need to eliminated or the Allen won't have the reputation it desires.
The first red flag should have been that other than our table there were only six other people, despite the fact that there was a sold-out concert of 10,000 people just across the street at the MTS Center (Peter Frampton & Steve Miller). After over a one hour wait, food finally arrived, cold. My companion's prime rib was unrecognizable, sent back and a slightly more recognizable piece of meat came. My meal (short rib), also cold, was absent of the potatoes and vegetables, by that time we were late and had to leave. Very disappointing, could and should be a great spot, maybe management by Canad Inns is just not capable of something more upscale, maybe steal a few cooks from Earl's and serve burgers.
I found both the service and the food outstanding. Very friendly staff and a delicious meal, what more could you ask for. Thank you!
There were only two tables of patrons on a busy event night (Jets game). So, not busy at all. It was early (4:00) and I preferred to order off the lunch menu (just a burger). I was told “no, Chef won’t allow it”. Go figure. Means we go somewhere else next time!
We were having supper before a concert at MTS Centre. We had a limited amount of time. The staff were very attentive, making sure everything was OK. Service was great. The french onion soup was suberb. All in all, it was a start to a great evening.
Wonderful lunch experience with lots of nostalgia in a national historic site of an opulent movie theatre(The Metropolitan ) built in 1919 and restored by Canad Inns as The Metropolitan Entertainment Centre.
Varied menu at affordable prices. Really recommend the crispy curried calamari which was delicious and different. French onion soup uses local" Bothwell" Swiss cheese and was very tasty.
The Chicken Alfredo with house alfredo sauce and" Bothwell" mozzarella cheese was most enjoyable.
Friends raved about the Montreal Smoked Meat Sandwich served on a toasted pretzel bun and the Manitoba Mushroom and Goat Cheese Wrap.
Our waiter Jack had excellent knowledge of the menu and wine. We enjoyed the banter between us and laughed quite a bit.
Definitely recommend this restaurant as a real gem on so many levels.
Best kept secret. Beautiful restaurant and fabulous service, great menu options. House wines were fabulous. Desserts were top notch. there is no room for improvement.
We came to see our niece perform at the Vincent Massey Improv fundraiser, so it was convenient to have dinner at the restaurant. I consider it my secret gem as I’ve taken so many people there who aren’t even aware it exists. I usually go for lunch and enjoy the salads. For dinner I had the pickerel cheeks. My mother-in-law and husband both had soup and quite enjoyed it.
I can’t wait until summer and dining on the patio, which is one of the best in Winnipeg as it is on the second floor above the noise and smells of the street.
A very pleasant dining experience in a spectacular setting. It is gratifying to see that the beauty of the old Metropolitan Movie Theater has been partially retained in this new restaurant setting. And the dinner was delicious !
Top notch dining! The Allen's dining room is simply gorgeous. The ambiance that this 1920 theatre creates is incredible. The food and service is excellent. A little pricey but, in this case, I think you really get what you pay for.
We went to the Allen for Valentine's Day. My wife and I don't get menu opportunities to go out, so we were hoping it was gonna be a good spot. It was !! The service was prompt and pleasant . The food was so good! I had the rainbow trout and loved every bite. My wife had the pork. She thought it was amazing ! We will definitely be going back !!
Quite pleased overall . A must try for sure. Potato wrapped prawns, tenerdloin, truffled perogy’s all great quality and taste
Food prep and flavour was absolutely perfect. Presentation was creative and real without being overly pretentious. Most important factor for me is taste, and they nailed that on every level. Proportions for my wife were good but my 9 oz steak looked the same as her 6oz and I would have welcomed more or a salad starter. Service was personable and perfect and we loved the old style decor. Highly recommended.
Was an amazing dining experience!!!
I recommend 'The Met' do more advertising as its definitely a gem of a place. The ambiance is very romantic and warm.
Will be going back!
It was a thrill to be in this beautiful old building once again and have a look at what was once the spectacular balcony of the Metropolitan movie theater. The waiter was very hospitable and showed me how to get around, which I appreciated very much. I did not particularly enjoy my choice on the lunch menu (a burger which was very large and filling, but not of a flavor that suited my taste). I believe that I could have made a different choice that would have been more to my liking. However, we appreciated the general ambiance of this newly designed restaurant, and I do hope that it will be successful.
A peaceful retreat for a Christmas lunch with a good friend. The gorgeous historic interior of the restaurant is stunning, the service was excellent and our lunch salad was delicious and filling. We would definitely go back for a quiet lunch where you have a quiet conversation without screaming over too much background noise.
The restaurant is a very elegant setting and it is not noisy so it is a great place for a fancy night out for a celebration.
