Great food at reasonable prices in a beautiful building with great service
I ate in the restaurant on Valentines Day while an event was going on in the theatre. The service was excellent throughout the meal and was very personable. There were items on the menu that were not available (Steak-bites) and my entree was a bit coolish, no doubt because of the event. While the meal wasn’t terrible, and the servers were great, I wouldn’t go back to the restaurant. There are so many really good places to go that if a place is mediocre I just can’t be bothered.
My husband had the Steak and Lobster and he said it was OK. He said that he was disappointed because the steak was thin cut (like a fast fry) and the lobster seemed a bit under done. I had the Short Rib Bourginon and I do not normally order red meat, but I thought that it sounded good, and it was really good! My husband also had the BEST Old Fashioned that he has ever had (hand made by the waiter), and we shared a piece of Chocolate Peanut Butter Cheesecake that was to die for! Our waiter was fantastic and the ambiance is gorgeous. Next time I want to come back for the dinner and a movie because that looked super fun.
The restaurant is beautiful - they have kept the lovely vintage feel and decor from the old Metropolitan Theatre. The food was quite good. I had a roast beef sandwich and fries and my companion had the Montreal Smoked Meat sandwich with Bothwell cheddar soup. We ordered off the lounge menu because the lounge was closed for a private event so both the lounge menu and the fine dining menu were available in the dining room. However, we were a table of 6 and the stipulation was that the whole table had to order from the same menu for some reason. Even though the rest of our party wanted to order off the fine dining menu, they were not allowed to do that but they did enjoy what they ordered anyway. The service was slow - we were on time for our reservation at 545 but we did not get our food until 655. We were attending an event in the theatre at 730 so we felt quite rushed to finish our food and get to our seats.
Went for lunch on a Friday. Quiet atmosphere and easy to visit with friends. Service was attentive but server knew we weren’t in a rush so we had plenty of time to enjoy our food. Great ambience in the dining room.
Great ambiance, they know how to cook meat to perfection, classy and considerate staff.
The only reason I’m writing this is an issue we had with the meal. Everything tasted amazing! The meat upon presentation was cold. Otherwise a great experience!
Ok. Menu was thin on options
😀😀. All good
Overall, it was good, but the prime rib was a big disappointment. It was not cut as prime rib typically is (i.e., thin, tender slices). Instead it was a thick piece, more like a cheap steak, with grill marks (???). I would not order it again. The rest of the meal was good though and my companion’s chicken was quite nice.
The Allen truly is a gem. The architecture adds so much to the dining experience. Also, every time I've been there I've always had excellent service. Servers are extremely professional and care about your enjoyment. If you haven't already been there, please try this restaurant. You won't be disappointed. I recommend the pork medallions which come with a saskatoon compote. Bon appetit.
Six of us were going to the Elton John concert so we gave ourselves 90 minutes to have dinner across the street from the arena. Sadly, the Allen Restaurant gave us super slow service, missed appetizers, ice cold food and skimpy portions. All around a bad experience. They did adjust our meal by about 20% overall and apologized but to serve a meal like it was out of the fridge (yes, the prime rib and accompanying Yorkshire pudding were ice cold) is unacceptable. We saw other patrons getting what appeared to be an even worse experience. Clearly something was going on at the Allen that needed to be fixed that night!
Unfortunately there was a loud boisterous group at a table near ours. They were having a great time but they were so loud we couldn’t have a conversation at our table. It would have been thoughtful if staff had politely asked them to tone it down for 15 minutes while we finished our meal and left. It spoiled our evening. Friends of ours who were eating there too felt the same way. Many of the diners were heading out to a concert so the “fun” group had the whole evening to continue partying after we left.
Next time we won’t accept a reservation at the high tables.
Great place to grab something to eat and a drink before going to a concert. It was really busy but the service was great and the meal came quickly. Handy to park right beside. 6pm reservation gave us lots of time for an 8pm show time.
We enjoyed the food and the service was good. Will definitely go back.
Dinner before Concert at MTS Centre.
We were treated very well. Location perfect for a Jets game. Food was good, and good value.
Wonderful ambiance combined with great burger and efficient service. Definitely will go back again.
I have not had such a strange experience than I did at this restaurant. It was truly bizarre. I have no idea how this establishment is open. I will never go back.
- completely empty, and remained empty, yet asked several times if we had a reservation.
- we had to ask for a menu
- three out of our four dinners were incorrect
- a person joined us halfway through dinner, and, despite an empty restaurant was never asked if they would like something to eat or drink.
- our bill was incorrect and then incorrect again when asked to be corrected
I haven’t left many restaurant reviews prior to this. This is the oddest place to dine at.
The staff were polite and kind, I do want to note.
Food, entertainment was great. Waitress got orders wrong twice and forgot which beer was ordered. Maybe New. We will be back
Our first visit won’t be our last. Convenient to the MTS Centre we decided to have dinner before the concert. The food was excellent, the room beautiful, and the waiter (‘Junior’ AKA Ab) was a perfect host.
The outdoor patio had a very nice ambiance. Food was just average; 4 different dishes, nothing to write home about. Service was excellent! Would maybe go back for drinks.
This was our first time at The Met Allen Restaurant, We had passed by it many times, but never had an opportunity to go there. The only difficulty was finding a parking spot, due to Cher performing at the MTS Centre. The surface lots (Impark) which normally charge $6 for an evening, were charging $20, because they could!.
Anyway, I was met at the door by a manager, who directed me to the ramp leading to the elevator (I use a walker). I was met at the restaurant entrance by our waiter, Junior. He was very nice and attentive, but not intrusive. He moved the table to be beside a window, at our request.
There weren't many people in the restaurant, and by the time we finished our meal, we had the whole place to ourselves.
The meal itself was excellent. My wife had the pork medallions, and was a little disappointed with the portion size. I had the 8oz smoked then grilled prime rib (a la carte - not the 3-course dinner), very tasty. The vegetables were amazing - zuchini, bell peppers, etc.
All-in-all, a pleasant evening. The bill even came in less than I had prepared myself for.
We spent some time between ourselves discussing what the theatre had been like when it was a movie joint, when we were kids, and remembering the many years that it was boarded up and empty. Good job renovating and innovating!
We were on the patio prior to a concert got there at 545 PM for a 730 PM concert start time. It took about 20 minutes to get a drink (including water!) and over 45 minutes to get our appetizers. The entree came out in a bit better time, however from when we asked for our bill to when we paid, it took 35 minutes! Therefore, we left at about 8:05 PM and missed most of the first act. When we complained about our long wait times, he thanked us for our feedback and said he would pass it on to the kitchen. We paid full price for everything. There were two new people in our group that this made a bad first impression with, and as for me and my friends that went several times last year, I think the chances of us returning are pretty low. It's too bad because we have had a lot of fun there in the past.
Very nice Buffet a very beautiful venue. Think the Omelette fell out could have had a little bit more training
The food was excellent. Our waiter was very good; attentive and professional. Elegant atmosphere and not noisy. Very nice evening.
Fast friendly service, food was prepared accurately, tasted delicious and the portions are generous.
Location is great. Reservations app was easy to use. Staff is polite and professional. Steak bites were misleading. Description made it seem like there would be veggie slaw, like a cold coleslaw type option. Did not thing steak would be deep fried. I would try again
The ambiance at the Allen is first rate. We loved the historical decor and quiet atmosphere. It was a treat to enjoy catching up with friends without having to compete with loud music. Our server was very friendly and attentive. The bonus is that it's next door to the MTS Centre which makes it a great place for a pre-game dinner.
We booked what we expected to be nice dinner before attending a concert at Bell MTS Place. When reserving a message popped up that only “Tall Tables” we available during the time we picked. No problem we were fine with that. Arrived at Allen‘s and we are seated at table located on the main floor bar. Still no problem as they said the main restaurant was booked for a private function. We were then informed that we’d have to order from the lunch menu. The waitress & hostess we friendly. They checked with the kitchen and we were told we could not order from the restaurant menu. We would have booked elsewhere if we know the restaurant menu was not available.
Kind of sad and disappointing as we were treating my parents to a night out. Well at least “Little Big Town” was Great! Dinner was only sad
Overall, the restaurant provides excellent food and ambience. The service while sometimes a bit slow (depending on the night) it is always competent, and the servers are always friendly. if you are looking for a nice place to go for a date or a special occasion, look no further.
Prime Rib was very good
Great experience for Valentine’s Day. Will be back!
The service was slow, and the food was too salty and overcooked. We had the mussels as an app, and the Prime Rib and Short Rib Bourguignon as meals. The potatoes and vegetables in both meals were overcooked, and tasteless. I would recommend this as a good place to go for drinks and atmosphere, but not as a serious place to enjoy a good dinner.
Jets game so I believe event menu. First time but will be back, would like to try menu on regular lunch/evening. Our server was the best, friendly, professional and very helpful !!
We went on a Saturday night and there was only one other couple there. It was pretty quiet. Could have some music. It would probably be better to go on a game night or movie night. Our waiter, Junior ( Omar) was very attentive and polite and took pictures of us. The food was quite good but small portions. I would recommend it.
Open Table messages me and indicated I didn’t show up for reservation. Our party of 4 arrived right on time. Hurtful...
The Allen Restaurant is located in The Met Entertainment Centre, which used to be the beautiful Metropolitan Theatre in downtown Winnipeg. They have done a wonderful job keeping the beautiful ceiling and a general upscale, classy feel to the venue which is what used to be the balcony area of the theatre, I believe. Huge windows, lovely decor make it a very nice place to have dinner. Our food was very good - there is a nice selection of meals on the menu. I had chicken breast stuffed with local cheddar cheese and my husband had pork medallions which we both enjoyed. My only disappointment was that there was a $2 surcharge to substitute extra vegetables for the starchy side dish choices, which I then declined, but there were not a lot of vegetables on the plate either. Otherwise an enjoyable meal.
The ambiance of the restaurant is amazing! It’s a hidden gem of restores architecture that really deserves a great chef to elevate it to the next level. The food on offer is fine, with no bells and whistles, and the value is very good. I wish they put a great chef in charge and made it a fine dining experience to match the amazing location.
