Contemporary American
Artisan Bistro is a modern and inviting dining room dressed in rich dark and light woods with elegant European design elements. Accents of black, off-white, cognac, blues and warm grays echo a classic bistro look and feel. Crafted wood wainscoting throughout the room and soft ambient lighting from above highlight the white-washed, wood floors to further enhance the bistro-like setting. New stitched-leather booth seating lines the dramatic floor to ceiling wall of windows overlooking Avery Street and two high-top u-shaped booths frame the space on either end. Additional cluster seating is intimate and close, allowing for easy conversation and lively exchange. Artisan Bistro features fresh, local seasonal dishes that present artisanal cooking in an approachable way.

Basically there is a price premium for eating at The Ritz, about 50%. The problem is that this is hard to justify the uplift if the food is about average tasting and we picked the night that the drink masters were not working. They also broke a new record in charging $20+ for cocktails and $10 for local beers. Our server was great, the rest not so much, so next time we're downtown we'll be looking somewhere else.

This was not the server or chef's fault, but rather management's. My son and I splurged to go out for Mother's Day dinner and chose this highly rated spot... It took about 15 minutes to get our place settings and for our server to acknowledge us. Drinks came about 20 minutes after ordering them. Food took an hour and a half - one dish was at the most, tepid (should have been served warm), so we returned it. It took 45 minutes for the replacement to be served. There was ONE server for 17 tables running at 80% capacity. I was told all other servers called in sick. Three of the Seven chefs also called in sick that day. They were serving the restaurant and the hotel (Ritz Carlton). They had no contingency plan. I heard over 4 groups complain about the service. Many had plays to go to and had time constraints. One family never received a child's dinner. She went hungry to the play. Dishes came out randomly and not in order of first in. The bussers (2) didn't clear empty glasses or plates. Even if the food was cooked correctly, it was in no way worth the price and was unimaginative. A poorly cooked strip teak with very basic fingerling potatoes and a small portion of demi glaze was $52.00. The steak was not cooked to my request and was tough and dry. The potatoes were mediocre and the demi glaze was just okay - even a bit too salty. Needless to say, I will never return.

We booked this because it is close to the Colonial Theatre. Didn't realize it is part of the Ritz Carlton. Vibe and ambience are good, service is excellent, but the food was just ok. My husband's halibut was very good, and my salad was ok but the steak tips I added were like small rocks. We were in a hurry to get to the show, otherwise I would have sent it back. Convenient location and I'm sure it'd be great for drinks and appetizers, but not sure I'd go back for meal.

The service was good but the food was pathetic for The Ritz. Maybe I shouldn’t have had expectations. We split a burger ordered medium. She said it would be pink. It was raw! We also ordered a chicken breast. You could barely cut it it was so dry and absolutely no flavor. So disappointed. Then gave us 15% off but it really didn’t matter. Total disappointment

Service was great and fast pre-theater. Food was terrific, but a bit pricey (what isn't these days and in downtown Boston!) We each had fish (salmon and halibut) which were delicious and plenty without needing to add extra sides. Excellent house-special cocktail. II definitely recommend!

Menu was interesting and varied. Server Eugene was very helpful. We were dining pre-theater and had plenty of time, not rushed at all. Only surprise was the high price of some of the glasses of wine, more than an entree in some cases. However there were plenty of choices in a more usual price range so we were satisfied.

We were staying at the Ritz, went to a show and decided it was easier to dine here (we came here for drink a month ago before Into the Woods). We were delighted with our table, best seat in the house - round booth at the end of the dining room! Nicole was our server, friendly|helpful|kind. We shared the Lobster Toast, French Onion Burger and Brussel Sprouts, everything was great! Following our dinner we were greeted with a Happy 42nd Anniversary serenade and a piece of delicious white chocolate cake with fresh fruit|whipped cream! So nice they picked up on my reservation note - thank you! Wonderful touch to a great day and night - the Ritz always does it right!

Our server was fantastic, attentive… not lingering. The crab cake was so dry & reminiscent of a small dinner roll… it was definitely not lump crab. The cheese platter was disappointing, as we had no idea what the different cheeses were (aside from obvious blue & Brie) and the honey with the wasabi completely missed the mark. I just expected more from a bistro attached to the Ritz Carlton. Live & learn! I’ll try a different place pre-theatre next time.

We lie nearby. The folks at Artisan were spectacular. We had to expand the size of our party on a busy theatre night and they came through, accepting our kitchen orders before we got there and serving us beyond promptly- one of our guests had mobility problems- kudos to the staff for their kindnesses. So lovely - and the hamburgers were great too!!!

I had planned to take my friend, who has been dealing with the illness of a beloved son in law, to the Boston Ballet performance. I thought having dinner at the Artisan would be a lovely beginning to the evening. The courteous wait staff, the perfect wine, the totally delicious pasta dish and Caesar salads were, indeed, perfect to begin an evening that celebrated our long friendship and to give my friend a sense of hope and strength for the future. Thank you, Artisan staff, for making the evening truly special. Linda V Beardsley

A confession. We dropped in for lunch without a reservation on Easter Sunday and were happy to be seated downstairs. However, we did not want the Easter Brunch, especially as we do not eat meat and were told we could not order from the standard menu but could choose two appetizers and they would charge us a reduced rate: we never asked anything about the price. A party of three sat next to us and were given a combination of Brunch and regular menus. That party was not told that they were given the regular menu by mistake and in fact, they all ordered from the regular menu, which we were told was not available. We were well dressed as it was Easter Sunday. The meal itself was fine but the experience left a bad taste in my mouth.

Artisan BistroResponded on April 21, 2023Thank you for dining with us and taking the time to share your experience. The daily special, Bolognese, was delicious. As good as any Italian restaurant. The arctic char was excellent too but I gave the food 4 stars because the menu said it came with “roasted “ broccoli and it arrived as par-boiled and very tough to cut let alone chew. When mentioned o the (very nice) waiter, he explained that chef likes to keep as many of the nutrients in the fresh veggies which is why veggie was flash boiled. That’s fine with me but the menu and the kitchen should be coordinated.
