Atelier Ratings and Reviews
It was amazing, such a great night. All the twelve course were awesome, pairing with good drinks.
The menu is an experience to live once in your life. All the 12 services are very well presented, nice plates, lots of thinking in every dish. The problem that we found is that, beside 2 plates, it is not very tasty. The fodd is fade, not enough spices or herbs.. it doen't taste much. Squid without spices is rubber. there wa two excnelent plates (soft shell crab and pigeon).. the rest where not very good.
It is worth the try, it is like a laboratory of cuisine... but it is a $230/person testing night!!
I have been wanting to go to Atelier for while and finally just went with my boyfriend and it was such a great experience and I will go again. The food was amazing and flavorful, very friendly staff (sorry I cant remeber their names, but we had two servers, a young women and young tall man) and great wine. I loved the extra touch that I had said I was going for our anniversary and they placed it on the menu for us at the end of the night and all the staff signed it. I thought it was such a thoughtful and unique way for us to finish the night. Thank you for a great evening.
Great dinner with excellent service. 3.5 hours of excellent dining.
I took my boyfriend to Atelier for his birthday and we were both blown away. The food was amazing and the servers really went out of their way to make us feel comfortable. If you are interested in food and molecular gastronomy in the food industry, this is the place to dine. Every course (about 12) was enough to please without overeating. There was a certain flow to the food and every course lead into the next. The flavours were well combined and you could tell there was so much thought put into every bite.
The staff was very accomodating to my nut allergy and didn’t make me feel like I was missing out on a single thing. The restaurant was very quiet which actually made for a better dining experience as it had more of an element of surprise. (Had there been other tables we would have seen what was to be expected for the rest of the evening). The server I spoke to on the phone had suggested a bottle of champagne that went hand in hand with our meal. Overall it was the perfect experience for two foodies such as ourselves.
A really lovely sensory experience as usual. This time, the tasting menu had lots of seafood-more than expected (soft shelled crab, octopus, fish, oysters). I like seafood but I found it to be too much fishiness this time around. Nonetheless, it’s a great experience, great service and there are some very interesting flavour mixes that we don’t usually get to experience.
AteLier is a great restaurant with fantastic food and excellent service. The wine pairings with dinner were fantasitic and made the food even more enjoyable. Presentation of each course was fantastic and added to the experience. If you want to have an incr double culinary experience this is the place to go.
I was travelling through Ottawa for business and I made a dinner reservation for one at Atelier. I never felt alone despite dining by myself throughout the 4 hour dinner. The staff were incredibly friendly and knowledgeable about a wide range of subjects.
You can tell that a lot of thought went into crafting the entire experience. Everything from how each course looked on the plate, to the mix-match of textures and flavours, to the wine pairing, right down to the flair with which each course is presented and explained to you is part of an elaborate ceremony in fine dining.
Each course challenges what and how you think about food. Some will make you pause in awe at the first bite, and some may leave you scratching your head after you've finished eating. Simultaneously nuanced and in-your-face, the entire experience felt like a feat of experimental dining. Highly recommended.
This place never disappoints me. Great food and outstanding wine pairings, perfect service. Always some new surprising tastes and textures. As I had read on the place years ago, it counts as dinner and a show.
One of a kind culinary experience. Great service.
A memorable meal. Our first experience with molecular gastronomy, and we're sold on it. The many different flavors and textures in each dish were perfectly balanced and combined; the wine pairings were inspired; and the sommelier and server were friendly and knowledgeable.
One supportive criticism: the quail dish was not quite up to the level of all the other ones. Less interesting, and the meat was just a tad chewy.
No problem recommending this to well-heeled friends!
Thank you again for an excellent experience--including the cute birthday cake!
We have had plenty of fine dining experiences and were excited to try Atelier as it is one of the top restaurants in Ottawa during our visit. In all fairness, we would say going to Atelier is an experience of its own as you are trying a blind tasting menu. The presentation of the food is quite interesting and the service is excellent. However, the decor is lacking on its own for a dining experience like Atelier and the ingredients of the food is rather ordinary. Again, we would have to say that it was more of the experience but do not feel the need to visit again.
I love food and good food. But the food was tasteless. So complex but so bad. Found a fruit fly on my plate. 500$ for two is ridiculous. I don't mind paying for great food but that was my worst culinary experience. Never never again.
The food was delicious, the presentation beautiful and imaginative. Superb service. Great place for a special occasion. Get the wine pairings.
The 12-course tasting menu with wine pairing was extraordinary. Go to Atelier not to get full but for an other-worldly gastronomic experience - this is food you cannot cook up in your own kitchen (ex. helium-filled candied balloon, foie gras encased in a styrofoam-textured shell). There was an interesting variety of wines sampled. Service was top-notch. Waiters and sommelier described the dishes and wines succinctly, and answered my queries into the wines with evident knowledge. Almost felt like I was attending a wine-tasting class!
Only downside is the ambiance. It was quite noisy - almost a full house and the tables were quite close to each other - which was not what I had expected as I had thought it would be a quieter place for a romantic night out. We were seated on the ground floor, close to the entrance, and it was extremely annoying to keep on hearing the front door bang shut every time someone came in/out of the building. Also, be willing to fork over half a grand for two people.
The food and service at Atelier were outstanding and were the perfect way to celebrate my wife's birthday as well as to mark the final evening of our holiday in Ottawa with our daughter and her husband. A memorable evening - many thanks.
This was our third visit in as many years, and I think we'll take a break for a bit. The food was wildly creative as usual, but perhaps not as flavourful or delicious as on the other occasions. The service is topnotch, and of course the descriptions of the plates and accompanying wines are part of the experience. We call it "dinner theatre", because it's so entertaining. The decor is kind of industrial chic, perhaps so as not to distract from the presentation of the food, but a bit of a change would be nice. Anyway, if you have four hours(!!) to spare, and some good foodie friends, treat yourself to an evening at Atelier and settle in for a brilliant and unique night out.
Quite the experience! We enjoyed 10/12 of the courses. The helium balloon was our favorite. Service from our waiter was exceptional. It did however take 3.5 hours from start to finish which was just too long. Tables are also quite close together making it difficult (and too loud) to have a private conversation
We went to Atelier for my Mom's birthday and the overall experience was amazing. We all really enjoyed the food, presentation, fusion of tastes. However, I did feel the restaurant was a little too noisy for my taste. The seating was too close together as it was limited. Secondly, though the service was not bad, I felt that for the amount we paid, I expected more attention to detail. Overall though, taste and quality of food was good and I would definitely recommend this restaurant.
Look. It just wasn't for me. I've had greater cuisine in places that are not as highly spoken about. Thanks building on the outside is dramatically strange. The avante garde of this while thing is completely over rated. The service was pretentious .....the food was....ya....ok.
I can appreciate what they're trying g to do there.....but whatever that it, didn't do it for me.
Oh....the drinks were well done and the pairings we're decent.
But .....I've spent half of that on better pairings. Anyways. That's all.
This was the best dining experience I have had the pleasure of attending. The food presentation was phenomenal as well as the taste. I would have never tried such food previously but the whole ambience was amazing. The waiter was very knowledgeable. All Ottawa should experience this dining setting. World class. Thank you.
What a wonderful dinner! The dishes were creative and original. The service was impeccable. The wine pairing included 9 different wine/fortified wine and even sour ale beer with a reasonable cost. Certainly worth going there again
Amazing food and service. Could be a little quieter. Definitely recommend!
Food was very interesting and mini-wine pairing exceptional with just about the right amount of total alcohol over 2.5 hours. The waitress was a little dismissive of our few concerns.
Fantastic meal and wine pairings! Highly recommend!!
The food experience was absolutely the best. One has to be adventurous, have a love of food and tastes. This is good art at its best. The service was exceptional also. We had the wine pairing and the details provided along with the description of the plate we were having was great. I only wish they would have provided a written description of each plate when we got it because it was difficult to remember small details of every dish. I would recommend this experience to anyone. Once in a lifetime or once every couple of years because of the price.
Not for everyone, but if you are adventurous and willing to try anything, go for it! The wine pairings were awesome, our server was extremely knowledgeable and went out of his way to ensure we had a great experience. Definitely worth trying out.
Delightful. The meal was special, the service was excellent, and we were made to feel like VIPs. This was not just a meal. it was an experience. Be prepared to be thrilled by the dish you were just served, and then excited by the next course! We have had a comparable dinner in New York City, at Per Se. This was was every bit as good (actually better ). The exterior of the restaurant and the street is a bit off putting, but once inside it is fun. If you just want food go somewhere else. If you want something that you will remember, I would strongly recommend Atelier.
I have travelled many places in the world and I have never had such a beautiful, creative and delicious meal. It is quite simply an event to dine here. 12 courses with wine and beer pairings coupled with impeccable service, and incredible ingredients. Each plate and piece of cutlery have been considered for presentation purposes in keeping with each course. I was astounded by how wonderful An experience this was.
The food paring I found exceptional and reasonably priced.
Cared away with presentation , forgot that its a food and needs to be prepared tastefully .
Instead of 12 courses do 5 but well .
The food was fantastic and imaginative. The staff was friendly and highly professional. By far, the best restaurant meal I've ever had. Even better than Tokay. Kudos to sommelier Steve Robinson.
The experience we had at Atelier was amazing. They do a 12 course blind tasting menu. It took us just over 4 hours to make it to the end so it was a long time to sit.
Every dish was just as amazing as the last. The dishes were all well thought out and each component, while tasting amazing together, could easily stand on it's own. Everything was well seasoned and thoughtfully placed. Many of the herbs and edible flowers came from a garden on the property. I would recommend this restaurant for all foodies who really appreciate the detail, and artistry that goes into each of the courses.
This was my second time at Atelier and it was much much better the first time - I believe the first time I went was in 2009. Obviously you know you are going to spend a lot at Atelier - I imagine an average bill is something like $500. So that's a lot to live up to. The first time I went it did, this time it really did not. While there we some tasty dishes it was really nothing out of the ordinary. There was a lack of creativity with the tasting menu - lots of sous-vide stuff, couple of interesting gels and mousses, but nothing really next level. Obviously this type of complaint can come off as nit-picking - but for $500 there is a fair expectation of amazing.
The wine was a bigger disappointment than the food. I'm not a wine expert, but I've done pairing menus before, and this was not good. One wine was flat out not good, another was fine but got totally overwhelmed when consumed with the dish it was paired with. The sommelier was disengaged and kept licking his fingers - he was pleasant but that was kind of off putting.
The main server was fine. He definitely was engaged in us enjoying ourselves.
Final comment is on the restaurant itself, the carpet and baseboards are in really dingy shape. Obviously if the food had been amazing this would have been easy to forget. I don't know what the design style of the restaurant would be called - minimalist? - but dirty baseboards seems like something to fix.
Anyways... it was truly an experience the first time I went and a big, big let down this time.
It's getting boring guys and the time between courses was a bit too long. The experience was the same as last time except longer.
absolutely spectacular, fresh food and locally ( even backyard) sourced, very unique, without being too overtop top or not real food, very informative servers, a great value, especially for all the attention to details, also lastly impressed chef came over to our table to introduce himself
highly recommend, thank you for a great dining experience
Superior service, creative and gourmet dishes, perfect wine pairings.
A very unique experience. Dishes are presented creatively. Good for special occasions.
