Specializes in tasting menus with wine pairings. Excellent and creative food. Beautiful restaurant with large open kitchen. Prices are steep but worth it. However, considering the price, coffee or tea should be complimentary! I highly recommend Backhouse
It was an Anniversary dinner and I truly enjoyed the full experience. I ordered the Chef's Menu and the Premier wine pairing and I was not disappointed (my wife ordered a smaller version). Yes it may have been expensive, but for me it was worth every cent (and it was our Anniversary). The menu is farm to table and most of the meal is local and definitely from Ontario. The presentation is wonderful and the taste of everything was exceptional. Dinner is an event and it was one I will share the story with others for some time. The staff Sommelier Bill, and our waiter (also a Sommelier) were excellent and their pairing of wines with the different courses was wonderful.
Was slecht te vinden maar fantastisch binnen in het gebouw
Als dit restaurant in Europa zou zijn had het een dubbele michelin ster!!
Outsranding creative food that will leave you in an awe!
We always eat here when in the area - being first introduced to us as a local joint with great food. This time did not disappoint. Mostly tasting menus here - for $99 we got the Chef's Menu. It was delicious and more than filled us up. Such creative and tasty dishes. Service was on point. Would recommend this place to any and everyone!
Wonderful food, great service, I would come back over and over. Just fantastic.
The one oddity is that I was asked if there was a special occasion when I made the reservation and I indicated that there was a birthday. The day of the dinner someone called to confirm the reservation and again reaffirmed there was a birthday. At the dinner, no mention or indication anyone knew we had a birthday in our party. Why did they ask?
We had a wonderful culinary experience with the warmth as if in someone’s home... perfect!!!!
5's across the board! We celebrated our first anniversary at Backhouse. All the staff were very polite and had extensive menu knowledge. Paul served us, and he was fantastic - great wine recommendations, prompt and professional service, very sweet and polite. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience!
Food was really tasty but the serving sizes were offensive for the price charged.
The egg appetizer was excellent with super presentation. The fingerling potato
was very tiny & the caviar? too fishy. Squash soup was excellent.
Bone marrow was all froth & no flavour. Lamb & chicken were good,
would have liked more veggies.
The boxed petit four was a good take home idea.
We felt the meal was too pricey.
We went to celebrate my wife’s birthday and had a wonderful time. The service and the food were outstanding! Recommend the wine pairing with the chef’s tasting menu. We will be back!
Amazing! Try the set menu. Very outstanding service as well.
This was one of the best dining experiences we have had by far .. we dine out frequently and we also enjoy cooking at home but Backhouse takes the food experience to the next level . From the greeting we received at the door right to goodbye 3.5 hrs later it was wonderful !! The creativity, flavours and presentation by the exceptional staff, blew us away especially because we feel we had the best seats in this absolutely unique restaurant . We highly recommend that you book the counter seating and order the full chefs tasting menu ..SUPERB ! We can’t say enough about spending our 30th Anniversary at Backhouse. Thanks again Ryan and the entire staff !
Excellent in every way! Three tasting menu options. Open kitchen with great views of what’s happening. Excellent service. Creative and fun food.
Awesome experience! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone who is looking for an outstanding dinning experience.
Absolutely outstanding. I highly recommend the tasting menu!!! Staff very friendly and helpful. Overall one of the best meals ever!!!
The food was outstanding. However, our service was not very good. The food was VERY slow to come out. We had the chef's tasting menu and it took us 4 hours to finish because the food was so slow to come out. Our reservation was for 8:15 and by 12:30 we were just dying to get out of there, which is too bad since the food itself was so great. If service had been better, it would be 5 stars all around.
Wonderful food, creative menu, stellar service! Would highly recommend the tasting menu. It may seem like a lot of courses, but they are small enough that I was able to enjoy each of them and was comfortably full by the end. The presentation of each course was beautiful and the service outstanding.
Wonderful, as usual! I was celebrating my birthday, and was not disappointed.
Food was great but it took so long to be served all course(nearly 3 hours). Cocktail was not good as food. Better try wine. I wasn’t sure about the tip but I gave it anyway. Overall fantastic food but considering price, taste should be good.
Out of all the restaurants we have been to, this by far has now gone to the top our list. We are from Orlando, FL and would go out of our way to come back to this place. I loved seeing the chefs table to watch the three cooks that night completely in sync with one another and the wait staff were like one unit working as a team. The Executive chef was front of house seating guests and constantly checking on guests to ensure everyone was happy. By far one of the best run restaurants. Now the food...that is on another level of complex flavors and textures that made you wanting more. We absolutely loved every part of it!!!
Excellent ambience, food and service. Loved sitting at the bar!
One of the superb culinary experiences in Ontario. Take your time easting. The Chief's Tasting menu with the wine parings is the way to go if you can afford it
Great hidden gem. The smell of fire wood burning right when you walk in makes you happy. The table side seating where the chefs good make it an interactive experience and the food is fantastic!
One of the best dining experience. Very attentive to details. Must go to when in Niagara area. Chefs tasting menu is strongly recommended. Wine selection is one of the best including sommelier suggestions. One of the finest anniversary dinners during the Canada visit. Thank you.
The tasting table experience is the way to go at this exceptional restaurant. Excellent service and a friendly staff contributed to a wonderful evening for my wife an I.
The peak dining experience of our weekend in Niagara on the lake.
Really creative food, great wine choices knowledgeable and the service people are very engaging and friendly.
We will be back!
Food and service were great as was the knowledge of all the staff especially the server and wine steward. I recommend more comfortable seating for the 3 to 4 hour long meals.
My boyfriend and I decided to give this place a try to celebrate our mini vacation. The service was very good and the food was delightful. We had the chance to make a reservation to sit at the counter and watch the chefs make the meals. It was fun and entertaining to watch. The food itself was also very delicious and some were more special than others. We would definitely try the restaurant again if we are ever in the area again!
A great experience! Sit at the counter for best enjoyment.
Entire experience was amazing. Tasting menu was incredible but pricey. You do have other option of ala cart.
By far the best restaurant in NOTL area! The tasting menu equals the best in NYC, and all the ingredients are fresh and grown locally. I cant say enough about how delicious and innovative the courses are. Service was perfect (thanks, Anna!) and our sommelier, Paul, recommended local area wines we loved. Really, really excellent!
Pretty Amazing 11 course meal... Just try it! Takes a couple of hours to go through. Excellent food, Excellent Presentation, Very Friendly and knowledgable staff. I just wish they had a chocolate desert at the end
My husband and I tried Backhouse for the first time last Sunday (Sept 9) and thoroughly enjoy our meal. We each selected the tasting menu and standard wine pairings. The food was delicious and the wine pairings well selected. The dessert was particularly good. We'll be back next time we're in Niagara-on-the-Lake.
If I could give this restaurant more stars I would. From the very minute we stepped foot through the door with it's rustic but modern decor, we felt so catered to. The chef checked us in and then sent over complimentary champagne because it was my nieces birthday. We sat on little fake animal skin blankets which was perfect for a cold night. With the ambiance of the open grill front and center, bundles of wood all around and the colorful abstract farm artwork really completed our first farm to table experience. We all ordered from the pairing menu where we enjoyed what was like an 8 course meal. We first had the dip dip egg. It was in a half egg shell presented on what looked like a real birds nest. It was a frothy poached egg mixture that you dip a piece of toasted bread into it. It was pure heaven!! While we ate this dish, the chef came out and said that the birds nest were from out back and he talked about eating this dish as a child with his mother. Then we were served fingerling potatoes that were pulled from the ground that day! The corn chowder with the popcorn added for texture was just unbelievable. Everyone got a different meat and we all shared and it was all so so good but the lamb ragu was by far my favorite. Everything was prepared so beautifully and the timing of each dish as to when it came out was perfect. The waitress did a wonderful job explaining everything and how the pairings of wine and beer were selected. They gave you a generous amount of wine and beer as well. The bread that came from 19 year old yeast and the different butters. The desserts were amazing. There was two different desserts including a little butter cake for my nieces birthday. Everything was so so good and we did not want to leave! The waitress told us that the farm is just a few miles down the road and that the staff all work there as well. Everyone was friendly and so knowledgeable. At the end of our dinner, the chef gave us a hug good bye. We will be back for sure.
The tasting menus are tremendous and good value. No-one at our table of six opted for the paired wines. We agreed the lamb was better than the steak. The only complaint was how long the meal took. We arrived at 8:15 and were seated at 8:30. The meal lasted 3 1/4 hours, which was excessive. After 10 pm there were not too many other tables that were being served. We thought the last four courses could have been served much more quickly.
Excellent food. Have to be with friends and have lots to talk about between courses. Soup course was so delicious but the portion needed to be much larger.
FROM BUFFALO AND ABSOLUTEKY LOVE THIA RESTAURANT. ANYTIME WE HAVE FRIENDS VISITING WE ALWAYS MAKE DINNER RESERVASTIONS AT BACKHOUSE.
OUR FRIENDS FROM FRANCE CAN'T STOP TALKING ABOUT THE EXPERIENCE.
THE SOMMELIER IS ALWAYS PLEASANT AND HELPFUL
Second visit after the first in 2016 (I live in Hong Kong so can't get here often!) and did not disappoint. The Chef's tasting menu was outstanding and each course memorable, the highlights being the dip dip egg, frothy, delicious corn soup concoction and duck liver mousse with tiny brioche loaf. I much appreciate the attention paid to detail, which has not wavered since the early days. Nice to see 2027 wines still on the menu - a feature of my first visit. Best wishes for the restaurant's continuing success and will be back as soon as possible!
Awesome experience, great ambiance.
Not cheap though.
