A really special, incredible dinner — the food was inventive, surprising and delightful, but the thing that really pushed it over the top was the exceptional hospitality and passion from everyone — servers, sommelier, host. Highly recommend Backhouse for a truly special experience.
Backhouse was recommended enthusiastically by a friend. I am not usually a big fan of the tasting menu format but we all enjoyed our dinner and the ambience at Backhouse very much. Our table was ready and the welcome was warm when we arrived. The food and the wine pairings were very good. The wait staff and sommelier were attentive, friendly and very professional. The kitchen and the serving team ensured that the evening moved along at a just the right pace even though it was a Saturday night and the restaurant was very busy. We will certainly come again and will recommend it to friends.
Chose the Chef’s tasting menu. 13 items were served. Each was a masterpiece of flavor. Server was very well informed about each item. Highly recommend.

This was our 3rd visit to Backhouse. While the service was very good, we were disappointed with everything else. There is no longer an a la cart menu. The prix fix price has increased. While some of the amuse bouche were interesting, we found the salad portion exceptionally scant. Yes, there were 21 different greens,
but barely more than one leaf of each. My braised short rib was extremely crisp and probably not more than 3oz.
The one shrimp tempura they substituted for desert, was locally farmed. My dinner companion ordered the Perch. Maybe 3oz, almost no flavour and rubbery.
She has cancelled her Sept dinner reservation. I gave no desire to return.

Coming from a Toronto food experience (scaaramouche, Aloe, Blue blood, Georges etc.... I found the portions very small for the prices being chased.
The open pit fire was not being used to prep the various meats - rather they were being prepared at the back of the house!!
The attention and food were outstanding. I can’t wait to go back to this fine eating establishment.

I have been eating here since it was the funky Stone Road Grill. And welcome their return to NOTL with Backhouse. I noticed at this last visit an escalation from the previous one. This couple have never served anything but great food but this last one was just superb in offers, presentation, quality, local sources, value, and just style- all delivered with wonderful service.
This I imagine is a tough business and we have eaten our share of wonderful meals in a lot of places but this couple is rocking it with style and grace and could I say professional commitment. This is always admirable.
If you are lucky enough to be seated at the bar and able to stare into the oven you can have a nice conversation with your loved one and wish you did not have to go to the play.
The food and service were fantastic.
We have enjoyed our past visits immensely, but the meal seemed even better than our previous visits! Everything was so well balanced and the flavors worked so well together. We can't wait to return for another visit in the near future!
If possible, even better than the last time I was there. The staff could not have been more helpful and knowledgeable. The food continues to mesmerize and transport me.
I have dined here twice and chosen the chef's tasting menu both time. I was not disappointed. The service continues to be very attentive and accommodating. Since I was a return customer, my guest received a complementary appetizer and wine pairing which was unexpected but very appreciated. Rarely does this happen ( in my experience) unless there is an issue or complaint with the food or service.
I will continue to return to Backhouse. It is a dining experience that should not be missed.

Sat right in front of chef, 3 hours went by so fast, quite entertaining! Food was delicious as well, had the chefs tasting menu, well worth it.

Fabulous hidden gem. Do not let the location in the strip mall stop you from opening the door. This s an amazing place. Food, presentation, service, wine. We had lunch - the mini tasting off the enpvening menu. Yummy.
We went for lunch and had the tasting menu sitting at the counter. It was not busy so it was a very relaxing sitting across from the fire watching the chef cook. The flavours and food combinations were excellent!
We were once again impressed with Backhouse. We did the wine paired dinner and the chef's choices were creative foods perfectly paired with the wines. Locally sourced foods and wines from Canada in January! You don't get more creative than that!
Variety of local seasonal foods served in combinations that most would not think of but are wonderful. Love sitting at the counter to get a chance to interact with the Chef and see the work.
Food was excellent as always. The service was wonderful and we had a great tinted with ours friends who had never been before!
We actually booked this on open table by mistake, when we realized the error my sister remembered that no shows were charged on their credit card $99 so we had to go. My sister was trying to book Garrison House. But, we read reviews and Backhouse sounded amazing so we followed through. Sadly very disappointed. The waiter was a “soft talker” and we could barely understand him. The first two appetizers we were told were mandatory - didn’t enjoy either. Ordered the aged beef to which I was told it was 125 days aged, asked what that actually meant and couldn’t hear explanation. It was fatty and tasteless, waiter never came back to ask how it was. Sisters pork was good but also very fatty. Dessert was great but I left after a three hour experience starving. Even with the bill on the table, another staff member came and asked me if I wanted another wine. Generally when the bill is on the table that would mean no, I was tempted to ask if he was buying, to make a point of showing him we have our bill. Too many different servers and participants. I wanted to take home all the fatty meat to my dog but every new person at the table made that seem like an unlikely task. The restaurant was beautiful inside. Not worth the $200 we spent with just one glass of wine and two entres ordered. Too pricey to give it a second chance. Won’t be back.
LOVED everything but the food. Presentation was very good. Eggs were better last time. Beets mediocre. Pork VERY poor. Plum dessert better last time. Treating family to birthday celebration so we certainly didn't want to ruin our fabulous time by complaining. Since it was your first day open after being closed, was quality compromised? Was it a different chef? We thought we had discovered a gem . Sad and disappointed.

We have been fans of Backhouse and visited several times. This time however we had the feeling that maybe the place has jumped the shark. There is a growing sameness to the menu and what was once a wonderfully innovative menu has become derivative. The same dishes appear again and again and since it's claim to fame is intriguingly innovative tastes we're disappointed. Really sorry to say that this time we saw a vast gap between value and price.

This was our 3rd time eating there. We’ve sat at the counter each time & love watching the chefs prepare. We’ve had the chefs tasting menu every time & have never been disappointed.

Vegan options were pretty good. Maybe a little more effort into them. Very salty food.
