Backhouse Ratings and Reviews
Lovely surprise on entering the restaurant as the outside gives no indication of the lovely ambience inside. The staff were all very attentive and pleasant.
Whilst the food was quite nice and mostly presented in an innovative way, it wasn’t as delicious as I expected to find a tasting menu. In particular there were three dishes that involved bread. The egg and soldiers, the sourdough and the mousse.
Overall it was an interesting experience.
Great dining experience.
What a dinner experience! The tasting menu was fabulous and to sit at the counter was a real treat. Caution though as we met two patrons who moved away from the end of the counter that was near the grill as it was too hot! The chef and sommelier
made sure the food and wine was what they wanted it to be. Gosh, what a great evening. Best dinner ever? I would say yes.
Food, service and ambiance. Attention to detail , quality and pride of ownership. We’ll be back.
It was a cozy atmosphere. Our server was knowledgeable and the timing of the courses was perfect. We were in no way rushed and the evening had a comfortable flow. The descriptions of the courses was excellent and the presentation was exceptional. I recommend a tasting menu with a wine pairing to get the full experience of what the restaurant has to offer. You have to be prepared to appreciate the seasonal and local nature of the menu. This didn't compromise the food in any way, but should allow you to develop an appreciation for the passion and creativity put into the menu.
Room was so Smokey I was sick for two days; paid premium prices to get ill. They need cooking ventilation.
We enjoyed Backhouse’s Signature Tasting menu paired with their premium wines. We were immediately seated with a smile. Our service throughout our 3 hour plus meal was exceptional. The chef’s presentation complimented each course. The courses and the wine pairings were well explained. Overall we felt the wine pairings were well chosen. This evening was not inexpensive, but it was definitely an excellent value and thoroughly enjoyable.
My husband and I visited here about 2 years before and I never stopped thinking about how delicious our meal was, which is risky because sometimes stuff doesn't live up to the expectation you have after 2 years of memory.
Shouldn't have worried though - the food was as amazing as I remembered. Backhouse is such an experience - amazing service, incredible food and just a bit of a fun adventure trying a bunch of well-executed little dishes. I recommend this place to everyone I know even if they're not trying to make plans anywhere near NOTL.
Food was excellent, service was immaculate, and the wines suggested by the server were spot on.
We went to Backhouse for a special occasion recently and sat at the chef's counter and we were not disappointed. Our server Genevieve was on top of everything and was very knowledgeable about the wines being paired with each course. The food was amazing and amongst the best we've ever had. The whole experience was fantastic, from the atmosphere to the service to the food. We would definitely recommend this dining experience to anyone!
Service was unfortunately low quality. We had to ask for wine menu several times and eventually got one halfway through entrees. We didn't bother ordering wine at that point. No quality checks on food. And the server "fired" the courses too early. We felt very rushed. She was obviously not experienced, which for $44 a plate, the server should be well trained in wine pairings and service. Disappointed we didn't get to enjoy wine with dinner. But the food was good and ambience was cool. I would like to try the kitchen seats next time as I think it would enhance the overall experience.
Our group did the small food pairing accompanied by the premium wine pairing, which was more than enough. The food was well paced, provided a great variety of flavours and was absolutely delicious. The sommelier's visits to our table to explain the pairings was a special touch and made a huge difference. A great experience!
We had the chef's tasting menu. It was delicious. The idea that he can make such a delicious meal in a cold climate from local ingredients is amazing.
The tasting menu was good until the dessert. The sommelier was wonderful, great wines, very friendly, great service.
Definitely would recommend eating there.
We are foodies. We are happy to pay a good dollar for an amazing culinary experience. We have paid the equivalent bill for much higher service and food quality. The waiter was very inexperienced but was willing to take correction. The signature (top) tasting menu had some amazing moments but it all fell apart after the main courses began. The wine pairing in the latter courses seemed to appeal to red wine drinkers versus a well thought out marriage of food and wine. We understand that everyone has their taste preferences but there are basic guidelines. Heavy wines need spicy, rich or more flavourful food, otherwise the wine overpowers the delicate flavours in lighter foods such as pork. Our biggest criticism, for the price we paid for the meal, was that the hi-light main course (usually the last course) was pork loin. It was over cooked, very difficult to cut and it was paired with a heavy red. We have paid more money at high end Michelin star restaurants and haven’t complained because the foods and wine pairings were delectable. This fell very short of a fine dining tasting menu for us. On a positive note, the Cesar was amazing as were the cheeses. The chef’s sour dough was incredible, as was the soup course and the pasta course. The red wine choice for the pasta course was also too heavy, but the dish itself was incredible. I’d need to be enticed to give this place another chance.
We were a group of 6, in town for an annual girls trip. We all opted for the mid-range tasting menu, none of us required any modifications to the menu - and it was AMAZING! We were not aware that the restaurant is truly designed for tasting menus, with a relatively limited a la carte offering, but after reviewing the tasting menu options, we were all sold.
We did not opt for the wine pairings as 50% of us are pregnant, so I can't speak to that.
Service was lovely and informative, it was punctual on both service and clearing, and our server was attentive and knowledgable.
It's a great illusion that it's located in, essentially, a strip mall - the interior is beautiful and warm.
Would highly recommend!
Slow on the drinks and between courses but great ambience. The restaurant was unassuming from the street but beautiful inside
Excellent in every way. Food is original and the service is impeccable.
We made a reservation on open table for a Tuesday night, which was accepted and confirmed by open table. Apparently Backhouse isn't open on tuesdays, so when we arrived (after a bit of a walk from the main area of town) we were greeted by closed doors. Common decency would have required either a simple phone call to let us know or rudimentary coordination with open table. We are only here for three nights, and we plan our meals. We not only missed out on Back house, but we also were robbed of the opportunity to make a reservation somewhere else.
We had a gift card for the Backhouse and wanted to use it.
We had a good time.
I had the 7 course tasting menu. My husband had the lamb ala carte.
Loved everything except the duck liver mousse.
Good value. Spent 3 hours there.
Backhouse is unbelievably awesome! A culinary extravaganza that provides amazing food and a show that you won't soon forget. Ask for counter-seating for the full experience!!
Chef and staff were extremely friendly even though they were busy. We had a great time and will go back.
It was an alternative to our traditional Thanksgiving dinner at home. We chose the tasting menu which was wonderful. It was expensive and we would have liked to have had more seasoned, knowledgeable servers with good wine and food background and who could spend a bit of time with us explaining ingredients etc per course. I think we had the training team. Not cool for the tasting menu for 4.
What a lovely meal. We thoroughly enjoyed the tasting menu for lunch.
The only thing we didn’t care for was the music. It was loud rock music that we didn’t find fit with the venue and was irritating.
Everything else was perfect!
Second trip and it was just as amazing as the first. Can’t wait to go back.
Had the 10 course (middle) tasting menu with wine pairings. Enjoyed all of the dishes on the tasting menu and thought they were delicious and at times quite interesting. Had the premium wine pairings which were hit and miss. Right off on the first course the whitefish and cava - not a good match. However, overall a wonderful experience. Would not hesitate to return, although I'd do the wine differently.
Went for an anniversary celebration and was very impressed! We had the Chef's Tasting menu, which was pricy but spectacular as far as the taste, variety, and presentation of the food goes. From start to finish, the service was spot on. All in all, a wonderful experience and worth every penny!
Excellent dining experience with innovative signature tasting menu, with high-quality ingredients, creativity of menu, beautiful presentation, great service. Ideal for people who seek creative cuisine.
Our anniversary dinner was fantastic! We had the chef's tasting menu and must say it was the best meal we have ever had! Sitting at the counter and watching the meal preparation and talking a bit with the chefs made it even better. Could not have imagined a better night! Thank to everyone!
Had a great experience at Backhouse. If you are a foodie this place is for you. Tasting menu is well rounded and delicious. Also so much fun if your into wining and dining. Service was great, knowledgeable server.
Fantastic. It was my first time dining at the restaurant and I was thoroughly impressed. Great service, beautiful food presentation & a lovely ambience. My friends and I enjoyed the tasting menu which clearly had a lot of passion and thought put into it. Thank you for your hospitality!
Took my uncle visiting from Japan and my parents to Backhouse on a Tuesday night in October. Ambiance is very nice with a view of the woodburning oven behind the bar from all tables. By 9pm place was half full and we could still carry our conversation without straining to hear or shouting. I would imagine on a weekend with a packed crowd it would be fairly noisy. We all had the 12-course chef's tasting menu. My dad and uncle had the wine pairing. All but two of the wines were from the Niagara-on-the-Lake region. Although I was not blown away by any of the food courses their preparations and execution were what I would expect for the prices paid (my only tasting menu experiences are at Toronto high-end establishments). Some would argue bread and butter should not be a course but both are made in house. Felt a bit rushed between courses 7 and 9 by the server trying to take away the plates with food still on them. Overall this being my first dining experience in this region I would recommend eating at Backhouse.
We enjoyed exceptional service at Backhouse: very warm, personable and knowledgeable. My friends tried the tasting menu while I had an appetizer, main and dessert a la carte. Both were exceptional and well priced. I highly recommend!
We all felt this restaurant experience was over rated for the value of the food and service. The ambience was very nice despite the fact that the place is located in a strip mall.
The servers tried hard but didn't quite make the mark. Drinks were served to the wrong table. Food was presented to the wrong guests at each course. Food was good but not for the price. Bread and butter costs extra which is mostly included in other fine dining restaurants.
Tried too hard to be hipster farm to fork trend but forgot about the basics.
Quality was good. Service good. Trout excellent, chicken portion miniscule, lamb ragout could be better presented. Nice greens as side. Ambience new and fresh. Cozy fire. Wine list well thought out.
We were disappointed with the limited selection at lunch; geared more to evening than lunch ie no main dish salads or sandwhich offerings; quite expensive.
Web site menu not up to date as burgers no longer on the menu. We were annoyed at the incorrect menu and most disappointed with the burger option being dropped. Seems many others are as well. Gourmet burgers are hugely current in TO and other places. Why not Niagara?
They were few people in the restaurant despite the town being really busy. Unfortunate as clearly there is talent in the kitchen that could be better directed to customer preferences. Sadly we will not return.
A friend recommended Backhouse to us and we certainly were not disappointed. The food was so unique and we loved he experience of watching each course be prepared right in front of us. A must-go place when in NOTL!
Backhouse is about fabulous, unbelievably fabulous food. It is also about attentive, expert service that is not intrusive. There is flexibility to accommodate individual dietary needs, and preferences in wine. It truly deserves its awards. Dining at Backhouse creates its own occasion!
Wonderful atmosphere at this farm to table restaurant. Tasting menus are the way to go, so creative and flavorful. Good local wines for pairing adn extensive drink menu.
We recently went to Backhouse on our honeymoon and loved it! We opted to partake in the tasting menu and we're glad we did- each course was so different but nothing felt out of place- it was all delicious, inspired, and seasonal. We had ordered the chef's tasting menu but our server misheard us and ordered the signature tasting menu for us. The two menus had many similarities though we missed out on some of the courses we were looking forward to which were only part of the chef's tasting menu. However, we were so full and everything was so good that we didn't really feel like we missed out on anything. She also provided a complimentary cheese plate as an apology so that was great too. The atmosphere is beautiful and I recommend sitting at the counter to see the action! Amazing and memorable experience :-)
I loved the service and the bar area close to the fire pit. The food described as "integrated cool climate cuisine" was a bit of a stretch. The courses order in the tasting menu weren't very well planned out. Serving duck liver mousse right before the duck main course was a bit of a miss. The brioche served with the duck liver mousse was burnt. Overall the meal was a bit strange and it didn't make much sense together. The eggplant soup was a miss as well, not a lot of flavour.
The egg dish was the star, so delicious and straightforward. I would go back there to have a cocktail and eat that egg but wouldn't do the tasting menu as i don't think it was good value for the food.
