Black Rice Izakaya
Service was MUCH better this time, and much more attentive.
We have been so many times, and left disappointed. Food quality was OK, but the service was miserable. Took forever to take our drink order, and then food order, never came to check on us or to take away empty dishes. Left and went somewhere else to complete our meal.
Food was nice but service was bad.
Some of the best Sushi I have ever had.
It’s a bit on the pricey side however if you want quality it is worth it.
Very unsatisfied with the service, but good taste for sure. I probably won’t go again because of my experience last night. When I got seated, one of the seats had water spill, if I didn’t notice, my pants would get all wet. I asked the server to clean it up, but she decided to finish wiping an empty table first before helping me. So I had to stand there and wait... Then, when my friend asked for more tea, the server only helped her to fill her cup but not the rest of the table... Also, when I asked for the bill, I waited for 10mins and had to ask again. The server brought the machine after we were impatient and told her we waited for 20 mins to pay for the bill. Lastly, they used to give frozen grapes after we ate, we didn’t get any. Worst birthday dinner ever, so I would not go again. I have been to black rice several times for everyday dining (lunches, dinners etc), but last night ruined my previous impressions. Don’t go there for any special occasions! They can’t guarantee good service!
It was our first time eating at Black Rice Izakaya after all the amazing things we've heard. We brought a close couple friends of ours and were excited to eat everything. The food was lovely, we ordered the Yaki Udon and the Beef and Mushroom Rice in the Hot bowl, the main aburi platter, and about 3 other plates for the four of us. The food was very tasty... but we all rushed home post dinner with a bad stomach ache that lasted into the evening. Luckily it wasn't anything serious... but it would be odd that all 4 of us had stomach aches all around the same time.
We celebrate our birthday here but seems like nobody cares. We have mentioned it on open table and thought the staff will do something special
We went there before our show at Queen Elizabeth theatre. It is just half a block to the theatre, so super convenient.
We went early before 6 on a weekday, so the restaurant was quiet and the service was good. We ordered agedashi tofu, chicken karaage, beef with black mushroom and rice in a hot stone bowl. All are outstanding.
We also ordered a tuna toro aburi. My friend noticed the fish tastes not fresh, the server told us that is how that dish taste like. We did not know who to believe, so we returned the dish (with no charge).
Overall, we had good experience at black rice izakaya. But I might not order aburi again.
Service needs improvement.
Great Food. A little noisy for these old ears - but this was a Friday night. Staff scattered -- they need a more systematic approach to servicing tables. Smoky also -- stronger vent gents!
The lunch teishoku are great way to try different items from their menu. We enjoy the angus steak aburi sushi!
I love this place. Food is well priced and exceptional. On this particular visit the service was horrible. We waited 30 minutes to get our 1st drink. No one came to the table for 25 minutes and waited another 15 minutes for a pitcher of beer. Something was not going well for the staff that night.
We found that many of the items we wanted to order in terms of both food and alcohol were out of stock and unavailable which would’ve been nice to know beforehand but we still managed to find dishes to order. The food presentation was lovely but slightly on the pricer side for certain dishes. Service was pretty average to start with but the other server we had for the second half of the night was a sweetheart and ended off our night on a good note. Overall, a good meal but there are some other options with a better pricing and dish selection.
It was delicious!
It seems that the waitress only cares about thier special customers. She would treat you poorly if you are new and don't know the chef.
Great fresh Sushi
This restaurant is located right next to Hotel Blu, where my husband and I stayed recently. It was our last night in Vancouver and we decided to eat nearby after having walked the city for days. Although the room was a little too warm (they use the AC sparingly) and the music a tad loud, it had a good vibe. Most importantly, the food was excellent and very innovative. Many options were not your standard sushi/sashimi fare. The deep fried tofu starter was divine, as were all our other dishes. The sake we had was also the best we had ever tried. Definitely will be back.
Food was delicious and service was great! The chairs are a but uncomfortable and there isnt any dessert options.
An evening out with my daughter before a concert, this place was a special surprise.
Delicious food, but in my opinion, just barely worth the price. Definitely worth trying though, would come again!
the food was good and authentic. the service was curt, like they didn't need you there. overall, the food helped compensate.
They were extremely busy. Luckily the food didn’t take too long and the food was excellent.
Great place to have dinner before he soccer game.
This was only our 2nd time and we were seated in the main area. Very very loud with the overhead air
The 1st time we were seated near the front of your restaurant, much quieter.
That's the reason for the lower rating.
Met with longtime friend and neighbours. Totally impressed. Superb food and services. We will return
The food here is consistently delicious. They could use more servers during their busy times, but everyone is nice.
They were out of almost everything in the menu. How is a Japanese place out of ramen/udon? Pick a tuna - out of it. Want tempura roll - out of it.
Food was decent, but service subpar. Servers had an attitude that screamed out to everyone that they couldn’t care less about who dined at the restaurant. Our party of 7 wasn’t offered water and had to ask multiple times for water. We were also charged with an auto gratuity of 18%, but due to an error in the splitting of the bill, we were 0.80cents short of the 18% gratuity, and was asked to make up the difference. Unbelievable standard of service for an upscale restaurant.
We had the volcano dragon rolls, the salmon aburi, a vegan role, the waygu specialty roll and agedashi tofu. Our favourite was the volcano dragon roll which was very delicious - slightly spicy. The waygu beef roll was nothing spectacular and not worth the cost. The table next to us ordered a stone rock grill which looked amazing - a must try for our next time there
Good food. Reasonably priced and the waitresses were very attentive. The food came very fast as well. We ordered a Udon, Rice, sushi roll and an App which was more than enough to feed two people.
There were six of us celebrating a colleagues birthday. The food was good, although the menu seems to have changed since the last time we were there. The box lunches seem to have less food. The service was average -- one of our group had to ask twice for a drink. The serving staff are not very friendly -- maybe they don't like their jobs, but a smile would have been nice. We'll go back -- it's one of the better spots in the area. Maybe next the server will be more friendly.
The salmon sashimi was disgusting!! The salmon was so chewy and the worst part:SALTY! U can tell how bad it was by the texture. Other things were fine
Very good Japanese food at a good value. Highly recommend
Excellent food, never disappoints and good to take friends from out of town
Not your everyday Japanese experience.
Great sushi, excellent quality. A little disappointed there is no tempura on the menu. We went on the recommendation of a friend who takes lots of out of town people there.
Nice surprise for a last minute pick restaurant, we enjoyed the food and Sake recommendations from the staff very much....good job, thank you, we'll be back.
Sashimi was so good! Altogether a great date night location!
