Amazing and inventive food, attentive service. Loud environment
This is not a true Japanese owner Izakaya. If you are looking for an authentic Izakaya, stay away from this place. If you like Korean food, then this is for you. I will not return.
Good quality and good price.
My husband and I decided to check this place out when we were in Vancouver, based on some great reviews over on TripAdvisor. We were SO not disappointed! The star in this place is definitely the food! Unlike most Japanese restaurants that follow the cookie-cutter "Americanized" palate of ubiquitous (read: boring) offerings like tuna roll and chicken teriyaki, Black Rice's menu is surprisingly (and deliciously!) inventive, with the result being some truly tantalizing flavor profiles that confirm to me that someone's been up to cooking up new ideas in this kitchen! First, their house made soy sauce blend is fabulous! I seriously wanted to drink it =0 Hubz and I shared one spectacular tuna-based roll that had at least seven ingredients (can't remember the name of it) that was the perfect 'pop' of crunchy, soft, spicy sweetness. We also shared several of their 'kushi-yaki' tapas selections, all delicious. Worthy of specific mention was the ground chicken on a stick, as well as the spicy pork belly. Also, anything wrapped in bacon is a special package indeed. The waitstaff was helpful and courteous; seemed to me like a family establishment since we were waited on by each of the four waitstaff on the floor - it had the vibe that everyone was out to help whatever customer had need, which I thought was pretty cool. Atmosphere was convivial, fun - lots of groups of friends getting together. This is on my list for my next trip to Vancouver - which may potentially be made just for a trip to Black Rice!
Excellent Japanese "tapas"! The sockeye salmon sushi was a highlight! We'll be back, if ever in the area again!
My only issue was they use of farmed salmon instead of wild. They don’t mention it on the menu. The food was tasty, liked the hot bowls a lot, the sushi was ok, just ok, not having the option of wild salmon is a big issue for me. I’d go back but I think I’d avoid the sushi.
Great spot. Creative menu. Friendly service. What else do you need?
Atmosphere was very nice! Good service good food. All in all very good expensive!
The food was excellent!!
It was great! The food at black rice is delicious and presented beautiful. Great spot!
Visiting Vancouver and wanted a nice dinner out for a friend’s birthday! Great Aburi plate, really nice servers :)
It was surprisingly busy for Thursday evening. It was a good sign though because clearly many people enjoyed the food. The food was good overall. The noise level and smoking this though detracted from the enjoyment of the overall experience. It was so loud that the server had difficulty Hearing our order and got a few things incorrect.
Great place to eat dinner before a concert at Rogers Arena.
We searched Open Table for suggestions before the Eagle’s concert this week and went with Black Rice Izakaya based upon good reviews and close proximity to our event. Great friendly service and really good food. We LOVED their salmon Oshi rolls - similar to Miku’s Aburi style salmon Oshi rolls. Yum!! Bonus was the underground parking lot across the street that was easy walking distance back to our car after the concert. We’ll be back!!
This was a pre-concert ( Queen Elizabeth Theatre) dinner with friends. A wide variety of Japanese dishes to choose from. All diners enjoyed their food from salads to the sushi. This is not a fine dining restaurant (background music can overpower table conversation) (the menus look and feel like they have been around for 50yrs -tears and falling apart). The ambiance, or lack of, did not impress us- dining space is a bit dark and tables are close together.
Service was okay.
Nice casual spot with more than just sushi, the hot pots were very good and very friendly price wise. I’d go again for sure, nicely located downtown near the stadium district.
My wife and I really enjoyed our dinner. The food was very good and the menu was definitely more interesting than the usual Japanese fare. The service was a little spotty at first and it took a few minutes to get a drink ordered but then it settled down and was very good for the rest of the meal. We look forward to return visits to sample more of the menu when we are in Vancouver.
Good food but loud atmosphere
Great restaurant. Good value for Lunch Box A. I come here on special occasions.
I've had dinner at Black Rice Izakaya twice now and both times were enjoyable. The ambiance is warm and cozy and the sushi is always fresh and delicious.
Food quality was great, but very limited selection of salmon dishes. We wanted to try Black Rice sushi and that didn't disappoint. Service was ok, a little slow to order and a little quick to bring you the bill. It was dark with candle tea light. I could just barely see my sashimi and sushi rolls. We enjoyed it as a birthday celebration dinner with saki.
awesome all around!! Went there before the Katy Perry concert and they didn't disappoint
Black Rice overall was a good place to eat however I wasn't blown away. Their Aburi sushi platter was not properly made as the rice consistently fell off each roll my friend and I ate. The fish itself I felt was too small a portion compared to the rest of the roll and the price.
One of the waitresses seemed to be irritated easily and even rolled her eyes right to our face. It made us a little worried as to whether she would spit in our food. All other staffs seemed normal and friendly though. And the food is good as always. Really hope that the one waitress would not jeopardize our liking for the restaurant next time.
First time coming here. Seen it as I have friends living at hotel Blu. We love Izakaya so we wanted to check it out. It was a little quiet when we got in at our 7pm reso. The entrance was odd as there's a big drape right when you get in that kind of blocks everything. We were sat right away with our reso. The sake menu was vast. We were recommended a very nice one with decent value based on what we told her we liked. Will go with the highlights... The pork neck BBQ on the hot stone was amazing, the chef's choice sashimi of the day was very fresh and nicely presented, $90 came with a lot of premium fish. The creamy udon was fantastic, the baby octopus karaage was awesome too. I would say all the cooked foods are stellar. The low lights would be the sushi rolls and the aburi sushi...very mediocre at best, and expensive for what they were... I wouldn't waste time with those again if we were to return. But the sashimi was really on point so I assume the nigiri would be good too. All in all it was a good experience. The servers are very nice and attentive.
The fresh grated wasabi and homemade soy sauce were fantastic compliments to the already well-balanced flavors of the sushi. Fantastic sake menu to boot. Love the frozen grape with the check.
It's a really nice place, the portion are not really big. Service and food really great.
Nice food taste and valuable
Black Rice was just OK, nothing to complain or brag about.
Right next to Hotel Blu where we were staying. Really enjoyed the extensive sake menu and the staff's help with selection. The food was very good, especially the black rice unagi roll with rum and herb fire. The staff was once again helpful with menu recommendations. Unique sushi restaurant. I would like to come back again next time we are in Vancouver.
We went for a bite after a show at the QE theatre. Great sashimi, some of the best i've had anywhere and the homemade soya sauce and wasabi were nice extras. We did find it a bit smoky and noisy so not the best choice for an intimate dinner.
Wonderful food!! I’ve been a few times and enjoy it every time. Perfect pre-opera dinner
We were promptly greeted and asked if we had reservations. Table was ready and set. Service was quick and friendly. Food was decently priced, presentation was good, but felt the sushi did not meet my expectations. Sushi could have been pressed/rolled more tightly. Overall, we enjoyed and had a good experience.
~ Disappointed ~
This is a second time I’ve visit.
Both time is disappointed
Really good sushi! Definitely not the cheapest in the city nor the most expensive... $70 for 3 of us to have dinner. All of the dishes are essentially 'specialty'. The fish is extremely fresh and each dish is prepared as it is ordered with nice presentation. I would highly recommend lunch or dinner here.
Stunningly good food and service! Great location as well.
Much more than the average sushi fare. Great variety of prices, friendly waitresses, quick service, extremely tasty. Will make this a regular dinner stop.
Food and sushi was less than mediocre.
Great place to visit after a soccer game. The food is outstanding and service is fantastic.
Our server Rebecca was attentive and very pleasant to deal with.
The grill barbecue is a must here where you cook you meat at your table on a hot stone plate and the sushi is also nice.
Delicious variety of creative Japanese cuisine. Great quality fish. Yummy Sushi. Service is good.
The food was fresh and really well made. Service during the meal was good but towards the end it got a little spotty.
