Black Rice Izakaya
Nice surprise for a last minute pick restaurant, we enjoyed the food and Sake recommendations from the staff very much....good job, thank you, we'll be back.
Sashimi was so good! Altogether a great date night location!
The food was great and we loved the clean presentations.
We ordered large hot sake and after we drank for a while we poured a dead fly out from the bottle. It was so disgusting! And the service was pretty bad too, the waitress didn’t take care of us at all. They offered 50% off of the sake when we paid. One of the worst experiences I’ve ever had!
They have a great options for lunch that are affordable. When we went, we tried angus beef aburi sushi, the chef aburi sushi choice, and sukiyaki. The food was delicious and kitchen service was quick; however the dining service was not as great. I understand that the restaurant is extremely busy at lunch but it would have been great if our server could explain the menu choices for us. Overall, the food (the lunch sets or sukiyaki) was really good and I would go back to dine.
The sushi was very good. Some traditional choices and some creative ones. Nice decor. The service is somewhat indifferent and not overly helpful or friendly.
A date night fave. Never disappoints. Great food, service and always enjoyable.
The black angus nigiri was fantastic. Apart from that everything else was mediocre. The service was bad, our server was rude. The three of us was there to celebrate a birthday and we had a surprise cake hidden in their fridge. I talked to the server in private to get the cake out after dinner. Then she came to our table and cleaned, we said that some of the food we were still working on it. She blurted out right away in a very rude manner in front of the birthday girl as well, "you still wanna work on this but want to get the cake out now?". Way to ruin the cake surprise!
The goma ae was wonderful to start off, the Aburi sushi was fabulous, and the skewers of pork belly and beef were delicious and savory. There are many choices on the menu I'd like to try, so I intend to return.
The food was good! Service is attentive. Will definitely come back.
Hostess forgot to mark our reservation filled.
I had a Teishoku A and it was delicious!
Food quality is really high. Presentation and service also very good. Japanese tea was no taste so I think they can improve that part but I will sure to come back again.
Overall the experience was ok. This was my second time at this restaurant, and did not get off too a good start. Upon arriving, I informed the host of my Open Table reservation. 45 min into our meal, I was informed by email that I missed the reservation and will not receive my points. Confused and upset, I responded to Open Table that we were at our reservation and having our meal. This was embarrassing and caused me to take time away from enjoying a nice dinner date. The food was good, the service was ok. Initially, my date did not order a drink. After my sake arrived, my date asked the waitress for the drink menu. After looking through, she decided on a drink and put the drink menu aside. A different waitress walked by and took the drink menu away without asking/checking with us if we wanted to order anything else. We were offended. So we finished our meal and went for drinks somewhere else.
Food was soso and waiters there were a bit rude and not attentive. The washroom and the hallway don’t look so clean.
Decent menu with a handful of unique items, but it is a bit overpriced for what it is. It's kind of like a slightly less expensive Miku or Minami, but you get what you pay for (read: it's good, but not as good as the other two slightly more expensive restaurants mentioned). Servers are always very friendly and attentive.
Great place and fantastic food. We frequent this gem often
Delish as always!
This is a favourite of ours for date night especially when we have theatre tickets, as even if the restaurant is full,(it's not a huge place to begin with,) service and food seems to always be consistent. All the staff are super friendly and accommodating. Have tried a number of things on the menu and it's all delicious.
Been here many times. Never disappoints
Not authentic Japanese izakaya, food is so so, some dishes were good, others so so. Only reason we chose this place was due to availability.
The sockeye sashimi was fresh and tasty! A good value relaxed restaurant
thanks for the great aburi sushi! try the beef nigiri
My experience at Black Rice was quite poor.
Based on the price of the dishes, I was expecting a better service and food quality.
The menus were old, there was nobody at the door to help us find a seat, the place was extremely loud, and the food was kinda “meh”.
I went with my girlfriend paid 70+ Cad in the end and left hungry. I usually go to cheap sushi restaurants and leave satisfied and full when I pay 30.
We are never coming back.
Great food. Bit pricy.
Amazing and inventive food, attentive service. Loud environment
This is not a true Japanese owner Izakaya. If you are looking for an authentic Izakaya, stay away from this place. If you like Korean food, then this is for you. I will not return.
Good quality and good price.
My husband and I decided to check this place out when we were in Vancouver, based on some great reviews over on TripAdvisor. We were SO not disappointed! The star in this place is definitely the food! Unlike most Japanese restaurants that follow the cookie-cutter "Americanized" palate of ubiquitous (read: boring) offerings like tuna roll and chicken teriyaki, Black Rice's menu is surprisingly (and deliciously!) inventive, with the result being some truly tantalizing flavor profiles that confirm to me that someone's been up to cooking up new ideas in this kitchen! First, their house made soy sauce blend is fabulous! I seriously wanted to drink it =0 Hubz and I shared one spectacular tuna-based roll that had at least seven ingredients (can't remember the name of it) that was the perfect 'pop' of crunchy, soft, spicy sweetness. We also shared several of their 'kushi-yaki' tapas selections, all delicious. Worthy of specific mention was the ground chicken on a stick, as well as the spicy pork belly. Also, anything wrapped in bacon is a special package indeed. The waitstaff was helpful and courteous; seemed to me like a family establishment since we were waited on by each of the four waitstaff on the floor - it had the vibe that everyone was out to help whatever customer had need, which I thought was pretty cool. Atmosphere was convivial, fun - lots of groups of friends getting together. This is on my list for my next trip to Vancouver - which may potentially be made just for a trip to Black Rice!
Excellent Japanese "tapas"! The sockeye salmon sushi was a highlight! We'll be back, if ever in the area again!
My only issue was they use of farmed salmon instead of wild. They don’t mention it on the menu. The food was tasty, liked the hot bowls a lot, the sushi was ok, just ok, not having the option of wild salmon is a big issue for me. I’d go back but I think I’d avoid the sushi.
Great spot. Creative menu. Friendly service. What else do you need?
Atmosphere was very nice! Good service good food. All in all very good expensive!
The food was excellent!!
It was great! The food at black rice is delicious and presented beautiful. Great spot!
Visiting Vancouver and wanted a nice dinner out for a friend’s birthday! Great Aburi plate, really nice servers :)
It was surprisingly busy for Thursday evening. It was a good sign though because clearly many people enjoyed the food. The food was good overall. The noise level and smoking this though detracted from the enjoyment of the overall experience. It was so loud that the server had difficulty Hearing our order and got a few things incorrect.
Great place to eat dinner before a concert at Rogers Arena.
We searched Open Table for suggestions before the Eagle’s concert this week and went with Black Rice Izakaya based upon good reviews and close proximity to our event. Great friendly service and really good food. We LOVED their salmon Oshi rolls - similar to Miku’s Aburi style salmon Oshi rolls. Yum!! Bonus was the underground parking lot across the street that was easy walking distance back to our car after the concert. We’ll be back!!
This was a pre-concert ( Queen Elizabeth Theatre) dinner with friends. A wide variety of Japanese dishes to choose from. All diners enjoyed their food from salads to the sushi. This is not a fine dining restaurant (background music can overpower table conversation) (the menus look and feel like they have been around for 50yrs -tears and falling apart). The ambiance, or lack of, did not impress us- dining space is a bit dark and tables are close together.
Service was okay.
Nice casual spot with more than just sushi, the hot pots were very good and very friendly price wise. I’d go again for sure, nicely located downtown near the stadium district.
My wife and I really enjoyed our dinner. The food was very good and the menu was definitely more interesting than the usual Japanese fare. The service was a little spotty at first and it took a few minutes to get a drink ordered but then it settled down and was very good for the rest of the meal. We look forward to return visits to sample more of the menu when we are in Vancouver.
