There are 5 things we consider when we choose what goes on our menu:
1)Taste. Superior quality, taste and freshness from buying local.
2)Health. Whole foods are more nutritious, period.
3)Environment. Less transport, less waste, lower carbon footprint.
4)Community. Trusted relationships with local farmers, brewers and wine makers.
5)Economy. Buying local supports, strengthens, and diversifies our regional economy.

Once again another great dinner at Borealis.
The food was awesome and our server Luigi was fantastic... Couldn't ask for a better experience..
Food and service was excellent. It did take a bit long to get our main dinners but overall very good evening.
Borealis consistently meets our expectations. The food and service are always good and we love coming back.
Our server was absolutely amazing and so funny.
The food and server Ernesto was great. Only disappointment was to see classics like the turkey burger changed along with other popular menu items. Why fix what isn’t broken?
Good experience. Server was excellent.
Menu was trying too hard to be something- not sure what. Strong local efforts but when I visit Kitchener it screams comfort food- which was lacking. What we had was a timid effort highlighted by a very strong server. May try again is I hear they up thief game
Wait staff had no problem serving our table of 7 on a busy Saturday evening. Impressive beer selection - the 1.5 litre size comes in a rather unruly maison jar. Wine list is mostly Ontario. Appetizers ordered were disappointing. Mussels arrived barely warm with serval unopened shells (waitress offered to bring more). Brie was served with very salty and overpowering bacon. Sweet potato spread had a very unappealing (curry?) spice. Main courses were much better- bison, lamb shank, duck leg - each very nicely done. The bowls (both veg and meat based) were quite delicious and very filling. Nothing out of the ordinary on the dessert menu, but everything was good that we tried. Noise level was high when the room was full, but not uncomfortable. Upper dining room is charmingly decorated to match the nostalgia of the original school house, right down to the impossibly uncomfortable wooden chairs.
One of our party ordered the arugula/quinoa salad which was usually a looked forward to selection. However, this evening the salad was heavy on the greens and light on the quinoa. The fish bites was rather disappointing too. No longer a favourite. The turkey burger and the beef burgers well well enjoyed though. A cheesecake was ordered which was as expected. It was more of a pudding consistency and rather watery.
Although the server was friendly enough the service was rather slow. We waited nearly an hour for the server to return and ask us if we were ready for our cheque. This was after all the dishes had been cleared and no coffees ordered. Too long to be forgotten.
We keep coming back because of the quality of the food, but the service is also uniformly good in our experience. A good place for a celebration dinner, a date night, or just to lift your spirits in midwinter.
Right off the hop our server wasn’t having a good day and took it out on us. The girl that brought our food was nice. Food wasn’t bad but wasn’t special either. The atmosphere was really nice but other than that I don’t see myself returning unfortunately. I’ve heard the Guelph restaurant is better, I’ll give that’s try.
Venue was very nice. Service was amazing! Mike was very knowledgeable of the menu and had a great attitude! Very nice, kind and attentive! Food came fast and was mouthwatering! The pan seared salmon was a to die for!0
Enjoyable evening out. Good food, good atmosphere.
I was disappointed to find that the grille has discontinued it's free corkage. This was a very attractive option and does impact whether/how often I will return to dine.
Also my meal (salmon) was excellant in flavour but not warm enough and I did not ask to have it returned as
my companion's meal would have been cold should she have waited on me.
Our server Dani was awesome! She was funny, attentive and knowledgeable!
Had a lovely dinner out to celebrate a promotion. Our server was fantastic, she came and checked on us just enough to make sure we enjoyed everything! She filled us in on the history of the building and all the details! Food was fantastic from appetizer to dessert. Will definitely be back
Amazing local food with impeccable service. Truly a gem find!
Service was a bit slow - I was there for a business lunch and it took longer than expected, and had to rush back to the office for another meeting. Turkey burger was great as usual and another at our table had a burger which he enjoyed. Everyone enjoyed the soup of the day. The two others at the table had fish tacos and commented that they likely wouldn't order them again...somewhat bland. Maybe offer them with a hot sauce option was the thinking, or a tastier sauce which was tartar I believe.
Otherwise great experience, and a very nice restaurant...I'll be back.
It was my first time visiting the restaurant and both my girlfriend and I were looking forward to it. Both the atmosphere and the service were good.
Unfortunately the food was not up to par. I ordered a salmon dish which sounded good on the menu. I had expectations for $27 or so. What came was a small, dry piece of salmon, on top of a bed of what looked and tasted like bland coleslaw. Mixed in with the coleslaw creation were small chopped up chunks of parsnip, served cold. The texture was almost like eating an uncooked potato. Not only was the piece of salmon small and dry, the dish had little to no flavor. There were no sauces or marinades to give any of the food character or taste of any kind. Truthfully I almost sent the dish back to the kitchen a few bites in, which is something I have never done before. I probably would have, if I had not been on a date. As a result, I am not sure I will ever return to the restaurant, when there are so many other restaurants delivering much better food for the price point.
Waitress was friendly and accommodating
Excellent local and ethically sourced food. Friendly service and well-coordinated team delivery. We really enjoyed our time at Borealis in Kitchener.
As my go-to restaurant when I come to Kitchener, I am never disappointed. We had the pesto linguini and chicken tacos which were both excellent. The service was quick, friendly, courteous and accurate. The meals were perfect and the cranberry mule cocktail was super yummy. We had a sampling of 4 desserts at the end which was the perfect way to top it off before laughing at the comedy festival afterwards. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.
Love the menu choices! Lots for vegan and carnivores too. The service was personable and attentive. The food was delicious. The only challenge in the schoolhouse room is the heating/cooling system which blows either too hot or too cold. Other than that, a delightful experience all around.
Do not bother with the butcher board. Waste of money.
Other appetizers not stellar either.
Excellent service. Definitely planning on going back soon.
Borealis is lovely every time I eat there. The food is delicious and the staff are always friendly and knowledgeable. I will be back!
The staff at Borealis went above and beyond to make our night memorable! We were engaged there and not only did they work with my request, they even recorded it for us! The food and the atmosphere we perfect! Highly recommend Borealis. I would give more stars if I could.
I've enjoyed this restaurant a number of times and was happy to introduce it to out of town guests. They were impressed with the food, the service and the atmosphere. It left us with a "European" feeling... unhurried and appreciative. Thanks to Luigi, as well.
Canadian fare, wonderful service. The food was good but not amazing...could be spicier. Love the carbon neutral and locally sourced food.
Everything was good overall. The appetizers were quite tasty and the service was fairly prompt, but portion size was small for the price.
Overall experience was good.
Main complaint food could have been hotter -- would probably help if served on hot plates.
The food was delicious, and while the Valentine's promo meal was delicious and a great value I felt that the main course was a bit on the smaller portions size. But like I said great value and great multiple choices for each course. Our server was very nice as well, but took a while at the end for the check and machine to pay.
One of my favourite restaurants, excellent food and the staff is very friendly
Great food and atmosphere! Service was great and the story behind the venue is very interesting.
Well, we arrived for reservations at 7, seated 7:20, waitress came 7:40, took order 7:50. Apps came at 8:10 and then the meal didn’t come out until 8:55. Beyond starving we ate very fast. The food was tasty but bison was under cooked asked for medium but it was very raw and barely hot in the middle. Dessert was good. Both of us were happy with the dessert.
We are never disappointed! Great food, service and ambiance!
Our service was amazing and delightful! I had the fish tacos and they were absolutely yummy. 👍
Borealis never disappoints...its our go to place...
Thank you so much for asking about the noise level - there are very few restaurants that I go to any longer because you cannot even carry on a conversation but your's is lovely - peaceful. Thank you !
Borealis is the place my wife and I have as a go to when out for dinner. The food is always good, the service is always friendly, the upper level has such wonderful history and the concept of local and sustainable is of vital importance for our children and grandchildren.
