Borealis Grille & Bar - Kitchener
There are 5 things we consider when we choose what goes on our menu:
1)Taste. Superior quality, taste and freshness from buying local.
2)Health. Whole foods are more nutritious, period.
3)Environment. Less transport, less waste, lower carbon footprint.
4)Community. Trusted relationships with local farmers, brewers and wine makers.
5)Economy. Buying local supports, strengthens, and diversifies our regional economy.

I had heard good things but was disappointed. First I called to make a reservation for 6 and later tried to increase my party size to 10. I was told there would be no room for my four extra friends. When we arrived the restaurant was not crowded and the table for four beside our table remained empty the entire time we were there. Secondly, we were seated downstairs despite making a reservation ahead of time and letting them know it was a special occasion. And despite the fact that there was room upstairs. Borealis is like two different restaurants. Downstairs has no ambience. Upstairs is an interesting space. The costs are the same for two very different experiences. I was disappointed, Iwe we’re looking forward to our night out, spent a lot of money and our celebration fell flat.
Although the food was delicious, the service was lacking. It took almost an hour to get our food. As we were leaving we heard another table ask how long it would be, since they were waiting for quite some time. We were also disappointed in my drink. I ordered a water with a splash of cranberry and we were charged $2.75. It’s not even the money, it was the fact that the bar tender was ok with not charging us, but our server felt the need to add it to our bill. Just some inconsistencies there.
We have had one other experience for lunch here and were thrilled with both our food and service! Everyone can have bad days, hopefully our next experience will be great again.
Went on a recommendation from a local, we were just looking for a mid point to meet for dinner but wow, it was worth the drive. Food great, wait staff (yay Molly) fantastic. Would definitely make a trip back.
We had a work lunch for five and a tight timeline which we mentioned in advance when making reservations. The staff was ready for us when we arrived, sat us right away, made suggestions of items that were quickest or those that took the longest, and made sure we met our schedule. The food was excellent as well. Highly recommended.
Food was tasty, but could have been warmer.
The server reported a delayed item while holding dirty dishes—not appetizing. Regardless, beer selection is great, and pleased local and sustainable food is valued.
Great food and ambiance!
They struggled and made mistakes on 2 orders and took the food to wrong table when it came out...
Seemed to be understaffed for a Sat night we waited 17min for our drinks
While the food was good we waited 1 hour and 10 minutes for an appetizer then another 30 minutes for our dinner. The table beside us got our dinner but the waitress left it on the table instead of taking it back even though it was wrong. Then when she came back she realized the mistake and took it from the other table and gave it to me after I had been sitting in front of someone else and was now cold. I took it because we were in a hurry at this point as we had other plans. Also for the children's meal it said it came with Caesar salad fries or veggies but they charged us extra for the Caesar salad and then he also ordered root beer and that was extra as well. They did give us 20% off the bill but the experience was not pleasant. I would say this was a one off but I have been there several times in the past year and every time there has been a problem. I'm beginning to wonder what has changed to cause such a decline in the quality of dining they provide. I will likely still go back but it will no longer be my first choice of places to eat.
First time visiting, service started off good. Had dinner, then the server came by and gave us the dessert menu. All good, we chose our dessert from the menu, waited 20 mins before server came back to the table to take our dessert order. During that time lost appetite for dessert and left feeling unsatisfied with service.
Tables dirty. Watress not good. Very disappointed
Our family of 8 chose Borealis as our post theatre dining spot. Age range 21-80. The service was absolutely FANTASTIC...Brooklynn made the whole experience so much better with knowledgeable recommendations, fun interactions and just the right amount of attention. The menu had enough variety to suit all. Everyone enjoyed their meal (including the chef in our group!) Grandma found it a little chilly but other than that the environment was comfortable. We will definitely recommend to family and friends and will be back again.
We dined at Borealis on Saturday August 25 th at the kitchener location. We were a party of three and were seated right away. Unfortunately we soon realized they were busy and understaffed. We waited a long time for service to even get to our table. Our food took over an hour to arrive to the table and I had to ask for my dish to be reheated as it was barely warm. Our server was doing the best he could but he had far too many tables to look after. I was really disappointed as I had out of town guests who I was looking forward to taking to Borealis but it was not a great experience.
Our server was fantastic and very attentive and proactive. The food was fantastic. We had a great meal and evening out- we will definitely be back!
Fresh Pickerel Fish and Chips and Burgers were delicious, our first time and we will definitely be back!
They made our anniversary a special night with a free drink and a coupon to return again. The gluten free menu had great options and our food was very delicious!
My friends and I talked about the food and the service all the way home back from KW to Woodstock. Our waitress was absolutely delightful with a genuine smile the whole time. I chose the restaurant we were going to this month and the others were delighted with my choice. Keep up the good work and supporting local growers.
Great food and service as usual! Please put the fried chicken from the tacos in more things. The cornbread is amazing too
Market special croquettes were bland and the dish oddly composed. Pesto linguini was very flat on taste. A $9 add for chicken is insane. A pasta dish with chicken priced out more than a steak dinner. House peach iced tea, really need to tell consumers it’s not sweet tea as they would of course expect, it’s not an alternative to iced tea.
Used to be a regular in Guelph but the menu has really changed and not for the better in my opinion. Very mediocre experience all around.
Server was great.
Our main meals were excellent, but the appetizer was lacking. It was the sweet potato dip and was more of a sweet potato baby food warmed up. The chips were very seasoned, too much so. Greeat concept dish but didn't hit the mark of what I've come to expect at Borealis.
We had a great time. Our server (ernesto) had the perfect balance of taking care of us. He was very knowledgeable on what was in the dishes.
I've been before and it's always great.
Wide choice on the menu, nothing really stood out as fabulous. I like the local ingredients aspect. Food was flavourful yet portions were smaller than expected.
We had the best barb b q wings ever ! I would go back for the wings in a heart beat ! Great service, good prices
5 star !
Service was great. Food was awesome. The restaurant had a nice atmosphere.
The curry seafood bowl was incredible! The best curry I've had locally.
Borealis has become a regular hotspot for our family and whenever friends or family comes to visit it's our first choice for ensuring they have a great evening out with great food great atmosphere and great service
This is usually a favorite restaurant but we definitely got them on a bad day. Waiter seemed overwhelmed and food was just OK at best.
We don't maid paying higher price for meals but feel that food quality should be equal to $ paid.
We had small children and one was tired and we had waited for bill so long our table left to get home and I stayed to pay the bill. Sat for a long time waiting for container for leftovers, and bill.
Likely will go back and hope this was just an off day for everyone.
Returned to Borealis for a birthday dinner for 6 after a fairly long absence. Our server was nice, but not overly attentive. She took orders well and promptly, but food was delivered by others, she came by when everything was almost gone, and then we waited ages for her to come back to clear, take coffee and dessert orders. We were constantly waiting for her to come back. The food presentation was beautiful, and the atmosphere was great. Overall it was a okay experience, with decent food and service, but nothing was outstanding. 3 star means good in this rating scale. It was good, just not really good.
Tried the new menu item - bison. Done perfectly and presented with local sea asparagus and saskatoon berries. The chef inspired pecan salmon special was also complemented with delicious sea asparagus.
We have been to Borealis many times and have been very happy each time. Service and food is superb.
Food was excellent. I had the steak and it melted in your mouth. My husband had the Cornish Hen and said it was fantastic. The service was great. We sat on the patio which was very nice. Would definitely recommend!
We went to celebrate my birthday and my son’s birthday. The waiter was informed of the special occasion and he indicated that he would do something for us. We never learned what that special something was as nothing happened. Very small serving of spaghetti for one of the children. Otherwise tasty food and nice ambiance.
The food was terrific!
Loved the old school house.
Just a great room.
And our server, Courtney, was wonderful!
Great service. Our waiter was very friendly and attentive, great atmosphere overall.
Menu offers a good variety of choices. Local ingredients. Excellent service and atmosphere. Very friendly staff.
We're always pleased with the food, drink and ambiance at Borealis, and this visit was no different. Great place for a meal on any occasion.
Was very disappointed. It was my wife’s birthday and it wasn’t very good. Talked to the manager about it. Going back in August as mangers guest to make it right.
Nice choice of various different menu items. Well prepared.
Well prepared food
Not my first time at Borealis and will definitely return in the future
Not sure if this restaraunt has had a change in corporate direction but food quality has gone down significantly while prices have increased since our last visit, will probably not return and will no longer recommend .
I love Borealis, but my last visit was subpar. I had the goat cheese appetizer which was great! I usually love the chicken fried tacos as my main, however last time I went it was not great. The tacos are normally loaded with all sorts of delicious toppings to the point where it's hard to separate the three- so good! But my last experience- the tacos were very lightly dressed, it was very bland- no tomatoes or cheese- barely any sauce! It was just meh. My boyfriend also said his steak was a little chewy- he asked for it medium rare. My last visit did not meet my expectations.
Afyer the soup was luke warm, I asked for a feplacement that was piping hot. Both tasted delicious! The duck breast special was fantastic and the bluberry-rhubarb crumble delicious. All the food had so many wonderful flavours that melded together very well. The waitress was attentive but not overbearing - great service!
Fantastic experience as always! Love this place!! My boyfriend and I don't get to get out much on date night due to work schedules and a 6 year old. Borealis was the first place we picked to go and as always it was a great choice!
