Borealis Grille & Bar - Kitchener
There are 5 things we consider when we choose what goes on our menu:
1)Taste. Superior quality, taste and freshness from buying local.
2)Health. Whole foods are more nutritious, period.
3)Environment. Less transport, less waste, lower carbon footprint.
4)Community. Trusted relationships with local farmers, brewers and wine makers.
5)Economy. Buying local supports, strengthens, and diversifies our regional economy.

Food took a very long time even though there was not many people there. Server hardly ever came around.
Soup was very salty.
Made reservation for birthday no cake or option provided.
Charged for 2 appetizers when it was supposed to be 2 for 1. Love the restaurant though this time was extremely disappointing.
Went for our 33rd anniversary and had a great time. Our server (Luigi) was exceptional and everything else was almost as good.
I miss the booths. Too open. The noise level is out of this world, and that is why I go once in the while. Food is excellent.
I requested a quiet corner by a window and we were greeted and seated at a lovely table as requested. Our server was a very personable, knowledgeable and helpful person who brought our food out in timely fashion. The food-fish tacos with a side salad-was delicious! It was hot when served and very tasty. I would highly recommend them! I had the fruit cobbler for dessert and it too was delicious! Overall a great place to have lunch. I’ll definitely return!
Excellent service, great food, everyone enjoyed their meals and desserts, our waitress was friendly and always checking to ensure we had everything we needed. We have been several times and this was definitely the best experience to date. Love that we can go out and have a nice meal with local ingredients in a cozy venue. Keep up the great work :)
Borealist is located in an old building and that imparts its ambiance a lot of character. We chose the ground level as it was quieter. There was no problem with changing from upstairs (much noisier) to ground floor. Overall, the service was prompt and pleasant. As far as food goes, my take is that Borealis is still juggling with the pledge to use local produce/products, provide a diversified menu and make the Borealis experience not very expensive. We appreciated the flexibility of the kitchen/staff - a couple of us opted for potatoes with the salmon instead of other vegetables - no problem. When I booked, I mentioned "birthday" - it was not acknowledge in any way, but no big deal. To summarize, it was pleasant as far as ambiance and service go, still tentative in terms of food - a nice evening.
Will definitely be returning. Had been to this restaurant a number of times but wasn't aware of the upstairs space....loved it! As always, the food was second to none!
The best salad I have ever had! Butternut squash salad, you won’t regret it ! Mmm
Wonderful restaurant with great staff and locally sourced food ingredients. The Staff is really friendly and will make your experience truly enjoyable. We have been there a few times now and the food is consistently amazing. Definitely our go to restaurant in the Kitchener/Waterloo area.
There were four in our party so we had a variety of items. Butternut Squash salad is sensational-the squash is perfectly cooked. Sausage bowl is tasty and a big serving! Tourtiere was a medium size and served with fingerling potatoes and a lot of fresh greens. Half Cornish Hen was somewhat bland. Fish and chips were nicely done. 2 appetizers, 2 entrees, 2 of 6 oz wine and 2 coffee (no dessert) was over 100 dollars FYI. Wait staff was very attentive and informative.
We had a great meal at Borealis. Food was perfect, and drinks were great. Our waiter, Luigi, went out of his way for us.
The service was the best I've seen in KW. Food was delicious and plentiful. Atmosphere is great, built in an old schoolhouse. Will return.
Most of the meal was great. But, I have Celiac disease and notified the waiter that my meal needed to be gluten free. He was very understanding and accommodating. However when my gluten free dessert arrived with a biscotti on it, I looked at him with surprise. He said that the chef put it on my dessert as he didn't want me to miss out on it. Really? Perhaps the chef misunderstood the point of being gluten free.
Amazing as always. We don’t go that often but I do like the change in menu options when we do.
Interesting decor, service was excellent - she was very attentive and pleasant. Food was well presented and tasty. All in all a great evening!
The Real Good- The server and all the staff was excellent. Our server was a gentleman of about 35 to 40 with a shaved head and beard fairly tall (I dont remember his name). Really great made passionate recommendations, engaged with my kids, really sold the food and beverage menu. For sure an asset to the restaurant. The manager came by and spoke to everyone as well, she was really friendly.
The decor was great and I thought the beverage selection for craft beer and local cocktails and wine was really impressive and priced reasonably.
The Disappointing- Unfortunately the food was not so great and i was really looking forward to it. I might have over sold my self. The main issues were my wife's burger came out burnt twice. The second time we decided not to mention it to the server as it was not his fault we just cut the burnt bits off (That was completely our choice I am sure they would have made it right). The other disappointment was the sausage bowl which was supposed to have chimi churri sauce and definitely came out with pesto sauce instead which was not a game changer just not what I expected. My kids enjoyed their meals. We all shared a nacho's as well I was expecting big things but it felt like run of the mill nacho's.
I really think I over sold the menu to myself. I run a local concept restaurant and when I looked at the menu I thought it looked amazing based on menu items and thoughtful layout. It just was not what I expected. Its possible the kitchen was having an off night and their grill has an undetected hot spot.
The fried chicken is soooo delicious. I had a burger this time-which was also really tasty-but I should have ordered the chicken.
We went for our Thanksgiving meal and it was delicious! The variety was super and the prortion sizes were generous. Everyone was happy and Luigi was a delight to have as a server. We appreciated the eco-friendly take out containers as well! Thank you Borealis for a memorable Thanksgiving where you did the cooking and the dishes!
We've been many times, always great food and great service.
Natasha was our server and she was amazing! Dave, the manager, was brilliant too...great & memorable experience!
Our lunch was pleasant, and Stephanie's service was attentive and efficient: full marks to her. The lunch menu probably does not allow as much scope to the chef as the dinner menu, so while we've generally felt that our dinners were five-star, we couldn't really rate the lunch in that category. We were seated in the downstairs dining room, which probably has a less distinctive ambiance than the upstairs schoolroom, although we always enjoy the paintings and photos. We really enjoyed our wine selections, and the desserts were wonderful (and inventive), but our entrees, while nice, were not quite in the "wow" category.
Thank you for taking into account my allergies to sulphur. Much appreciated.
Borealis is always a great food experience. The food is always fresh. Menu changes regularly. Great beer and cocktails. Service is always good. My only small issue is the the benches in the booth are not the most stable and the people on the other side moving can be very disrupting.
We had our first experience at Borealis this past week. It was our son's birthday, and he's just started his studies at Laurier U. We were looking for something off campus, friendly, fast, and good. The restaurant was recommended by a friend, and we're so glad we took her up on her suggestion. Loved the online reservation option. Also, great service by Anthony (Andrew) - super nice guy - very friendly and warm, and quick service. Food was incredible. We can't wait to come back! At first, we found the music quite loud, but we must have gotten used to it, and thoroughly enjoyed our evening! Thank you! Some after-dinner mints would perhaps have been a nice touch, but overall no complains and highly recommended.
Service was great drinks were very good food was great
I had heard good things but was disappointed. First I called to make a reservation for 6 and later tried to increase my party size to 10. I was told there would be no room for my four extra friends. When we arrived the restaurant was not crowded and the table for four beside our table remained empty the entire time we were there. Secondly, we were seated downstairs despite making a reservation ahead of time and letting them know it was a special occasion. And despite the fact that there was room upstairs. Borealis is like two different restaurants. Downstairs has no ambience. Upstairs is an interesting space. The costs are the same for two very different experiences. I was disappointed, Iwe we’re looking forward to our night out, spent a lot of money and our celebration fell flat.
Although the food was delicious, the service was lacking. It took almost an hour to get our food. As we were leaving we heard another table ask how long it would be, since they were waiting for quite some time. We were also disappointed in my drink. I ordered a water with a splash of cranberry and we were charged $2.75. It’s not even the money, it was the fact that the bar tender was ok with not charging us, but our server felt the need to add it to our bill. Just some inconsistencies there.
We have had one other experience for lunch here and were thrilled with both our food and service! Everyone can have bad days, hopefully our next experience will be great again.
Went on a recommendation from a local, we were just looking for a mid point to meet for dinner but wow, it was worth the drive. Food great, wait staff (yay Molly) fantastic. Would definitely make a trip back.
We had a work lunch for five and a tight timeline which we mentioned in advance when making reservations. The staff was ready for us when we arrived, sat us right away, made suggestions of items that were quickest or those that took the longest, and made sure we met our schedule. The food was excellent as well. Highly recommended.
Food was tasty, but could have been warmer.
The server reported a delayed item while holding dirty dishes—not appetizing. Regardless, beer selection is great, and pleased local and sustainable food is valued.
Great food and ambiance!
They struggled and made mistakes on 2 orders and took the food to wrong table when it came out...
Seemed to be understaffed for a Sat night we waited 17min for our drinks
While the food was good we waited 1 hour and 10 minutes for an appetizer then another 30 minutes for our dinner. The table beside us got our dinner but the waitress left it on the table instead of taking it back even though it was wrong. Then when she came back she realized the mistake and took it from the other table and gave it to me after I had been sitting in front of someone else and was now cold. I took it because we were in a hurry at this point as we had other plans. Also for the children's meal it said it came with Caesar salad fries or veggies but they charged us extra for the Caesar salad and then he also ordered root beer and that was extra as well. They did give us 20% off the bill but the experience was not pleasant. I would say this was a one off but I have been there several times in the past year and every time there has been a problem. I'm beginning to wonder what has changed to cause such a decline in the quality of dining they provide. I will likely still go back but it will no longer be my first choice of places to eat.
First time visiting, service started off good. Had dinner, then the server came by and gave us the dessert menu. All good, we chose our dessert from the menu, waited 20 mins before server came back to the table to take our dessert order. During that time lost appetite for dessert and left feeling unsatisfied with service.
Tables dirty. Watress not good. Very disappointed
Our family of 8 chose Borealis as our post theatre dining spot. Age range 21-80. The service was absolutely FANTASTIC...Brooklynn made the whole experience so much better with knowledgeable recommendations, fun interactions and just the right amount of attention. The menu had enough variety to suit all. Everyone enjoyed their meal (including the chef in our group!) Grandma found it a little chilly but other than that the environment was comfortable. We will definitely recommend to family and friends and will be back again.
We dined at Borealis on Saturday August 25 th at the kitchener location. We were a party of three and were seated right away. Unfortunately we soon realized they were busy and understaffed. We waited a long time for service to even get to our table. Our food took over an hour to arrive to the table and I had to ask for my dish to be reheated as it was barely warm. Our server was doing the best he could but he had far too many tables to look after. I was really disappointed as I had out of town guests who I was looking forward to taking to Borealis but it was not a great experience.
Our server was fantastic and very attentive and proactive. The food was fantastic. We had a great meal and evening out- we will definitely be back!
Fresh Pickerel Fish and Chips and Burgers were delicious, our first time and we will definitely be back!
They made our anniversary a special night with a free drink and a coupon to return again. The gluten free menu had great options and our food was very delicious!
My friends and I talked about the food and the service all the way home back from KW to Woodstock. Our waitress was absolutely delightful with a genuine smile the whole time. I chose the restaurant we were going to this month and the others were delighted with my choice. Keep up the good work and supporting local growers.
