We tried the original Buca (King Street) a couple of years ago, and were very disappointed. But with so many people raving about the Yorkville location, we felt we should give the name another chance. Sadly, we were disappointed again. We ordered the: Culurgiones (pasta), Polipo E Vongole (octopus), Gran Fritto Misto, Porchetta pizza and fried zucchini blossoms. The culurgiones was supposed to have shrimp in it, but we couldn’t taste or identify it, so if it was there it was muted and blended to mush. The stuffed pasta was bland, but the sauce was delicious. The octopus was cooked perfectly, but the portion was exceptionally small for $50 (half of a very small octopus) and the accompaniment was uninspired (a few clams with farro or Israeli couscous, and what tasted like chicken broth). The Gran Fritto Misto (fried fish & veggies) was also bland… with a little bit of salt and a dipping sauce or two, this dish would have been the hit of the night, but unfortunately missed the mark. Also the shrimp was deep fried with the tail on, meaning you end up biting the first tail unexpectedly, with bits of it in your mouth for the rest of dinner. The fried zucchini blossoms were nothing special; we’ve had these before (at a Mario Batali restaurant in Vegas) and they blew our minds, so perhaps our expectations were too high. The porchetta pizza was delicious, seasoned perfectly with generous toppings. My mom said the porchetta reminded her of day old pork roast, but I think she is just not a fan of porchetta. If you like porchetta, try this pizza. For dessert we shared the gelato trio; the cherry gelato is amazing—best thing we had. As for the ambiance, it is lovely—modern, tall ceilings, individual washrooms. Our server was a tad standoffish, but I’m not sure if that is representative of the staff, or just a one-off. Overall, it seems that Buca is more of a hot-spot that you brag about going to and dropping $100/person… and then you go home and have a snack to fill up.

Father's Day

We went for lunch on Father’s Day, hoping to give my father an exceptional dining experience. Unfortunately, many patrons brought their young children and between the children making noise and the overall loud noise in the restaurant we were struggling to hear one another at times. I would suggest the restaurant seriously consider adding acoustic panels or artwork to absorb some of the noise which I find very loud for an expensive restaurant.

Otherwise, service and food were both great!

My wife and I travelled from Alberta to a small town north of Toronto to help my mother with the lost of her partner. Having a very stressful 2 weeks we decided to treat ourselves and go to Toronto a day early and go for a nice supper. We noticed that Buca Yorkville offered a chefs counter so i called and set up sitting for 9 pm. As usual we showed up 20 minutes early. We were asked to wait at the bar as the table wasn't ready. We were ordering drinks when a gentleman came over and said they could not honor the reservation as the first sitting was running late. He offered us a spot at the bar or in the corner to eat. We left and had a fabulous meal at Anndore House. We have eaten at a number of Canada’s top restaurant and have never been treated with so much lack of professionalism or respect.

My wife and I stopped for a quick dinner on Sunday. We both had the oysters which were good and the bigoli which were OUTSTANDING. For dessert we had the biancomangiare with fresh figs and it was one of the best desserts we ever had. The waiter recommended some excellent pairings. Very satisfied - and I should add that we are very tough customers.

We had two servers this night. One was trying to rush our order and we also received the wrong order twice. The second server we had was after our apps and was a lot nicer and accommodating.

Service was pleasant and knowledgeable, although they seemed to be in a rush to clear the table. The branzino is always excellent. Pizzas very tasty. Wines by the glass very expensive. A very nice meal, but not reasonably priced.

Over priced, small portions; none of the menu items were great. I would describe them as good at best. I’m open to great taste small portions and paying a premium for this... But when the menu is basic the portions are small and the taste is nothing worth paying for... I would not return. Also the radicchio salad was ridiculous. Literally 10 leaves I’m straight radicchio lettuce pieces with some olive oil on top. I would not call this a salad.

My wife Amanda and ate at the bar in front of the kitchen, which was fascinating. Every course was unique and perfectly prepared. One of the best meals we have had in a long time, and we eat out all over Toronto multiple times per week. Thanks Rob Gentile for putting together such an amazing place.

Lovely modern looking room which is both casual and inviting. Atmosphere was upbeat and eclectic. Fairly laid back, but service was excellent. We had the tasting menu, with the wine-pairing, which was exclusively seafood based. The service was very accommodating and attentive to our requests and our primary waiter, Gregory, was knowledgeable and personable. The food itself was beautifully prepared and presented. Some unusual combinations which were exciting and interesting, and the wines were very good too and they were not skimpy on the pours. Altogether, an excellent experience and would definitely recommend the tasting menu as it is good value.

My husband, two friends and I enjoyed an evening at Buca Yorkville on Saturday, May 26. This was our second meal at Buca.

We had high expectations for our evening, and for the most part, we were not disappointed. The setting is lovely, the service was efficient and friendly. Loved the cocktails and wine. Apps and desserts were divine.

The one area of disappointment was with some of the main courses. I understand that Buca is not a typical, traditional Italian restaurant. Kudos for the creativity that was apparent with all the dishes served. They were beautifully created and presented.

Two dishes, however, that were particularly underwhelming were the Culurgiones and the halibut (which might have been a special that evening). While the Culurgiones were stunning to look at, the presentation should not have come at the expense of flavour. To put it bluntly, they were bland and flavourless - both the sauce and the filling. Similarly, the halibut was simply presented but it also was lacking in flavour.

The Boar was fine, but not what one would call memorable. Again, a beautiful presentation with a nice looking supporting cast of garnishes, but a disappointing result for the palate.

When a meal for four at one of the best restaurants in Canada costs just shy of $800, I expect every aspect of the evening to shine. But the most important part of the meal should be the flavour of the food. If this is not of the highest quality, then there is a problem.

My boyfriend and I have always celebrated special occasions at a Buca restaurant (Yorkville or King). During all of our previous birthday and anniversary celebrations we have left with a box of take home pasta, which is part of the reason we have made it a tradition to celebrate at Buca.

However, on this particular visit, that was not the case. I had mentioned it to our server that we were celebrating my boyfriend's birthday (and had put it on the reservation notes), and he didn't seem to care at all. While the meal was great, we both left with a sour taste in our mouth as we left without receiving the take home pasta - something we were very much looking forward to.

The overall experience of the evening was ruined as we both left disappointed and confused.

I feel that this restaurant is somewhat contrived. Glad to have gone once. The presentation of the dishes is excellent. I like small portions but if you like hearty meals don’t go here. If you like small bites and want to try tastes of unusual food items then you will be happy. I would not go back despite the excellent service. A little too eclectic and Lacks much in the way of ambience.

The wine list is strictly Italian wines with not much information for those who are more knowledgeable about California or French wines. However our waitperson offered good advice and a taste of one wine before we ordered.

Although I have been here a few times before and liked it tonight it was not a good experience at all. Service was terrible..our server was not helpful with the menu which is not the easiest to see small light print or unless you speak/read Italian (and I do).
We saw our drinks sitting at the bar for at least 10 minutes before we finally asked another server to bring them to us. She (server) was then pretty much M.I.A. for the rest of the night until we given our bill.
The fish salami board ($42) was expensive but very different and have to give props for this.
The fennel salad ($16) was tasty but meager
We found at least 8 bones in our small portion of salt encrusted fish ($160) and the side of spaghetti pomodoro (which I though was included) was another $24
All in all there was no value in the meal and the 18%service given.
I have to give some blame to management on staff to get on it because at $500 a couple (with wine and cocktails) I do not wanted to have to write a review like this.
