Situated on the corner of Magdalen Road in the hubbub of St Leonards in Exeter, Café Catalan offers its customers and community a unique Spanish experience in an exclusive location.
Presenting authentic Spanish tapas from an AA rosette winning chef and award winning restaurateur, there's no need to journey to the Mediterranean to experience the exotic flavours.
We take care in sourcing our fresh ingredients, whether they be locally provided or, in contrast, the finest quality imported from Spain itself!
From cosy evening meals to lunchtime parties; from chocolate churros mornings to quick and delicious early dinners, Café Catalan has much to offer.
A very pleasant final meal before the Catalan moves to a new location in Devon far away. The Sea Bass special was excellent as well as the inevitable Calamari. Otherwise, good tasty stuff in good measures. We shall miss it and the very busy staff kept fit by those stairs...!
Great food, good wine list, attentive friendly staff. We had a great time. Highly recommended.
Our favourite restaurant in Exeter with gorgeous authentic Tapas. Service is great and the atmosphere is really welcoming.
Great Tapas, fantastic service, lovely wine, superb ambience. We will be back!
Food good but tapas plates a little on the small side. They recommended 3/4 per person. We had 5 per person. Cost of tapas a little on the dear side given the size of the portions. The seating is quite cramped. But we had a good meal and would go again.
Another great meal. Authentic tapas prepared and cooked really well and great value for money.
Great find. Great range of authentic tapas, decent sized portions and veggie options. Homemade olive bread was delicious. Highly recommend the churros and Pedro Ximenez sherry to end your meal.
The dishes were tasty and imaginative and at a reasonable price. The service was polite but didn’t really add to our experience. Cafe Catalan is a tapas place which involves numerous dishes being brought to the table. We were sat at an absurdly small table for this and consequently only received two dishes at once. These needed to be finished before the next two were brought. We weren’t given a choice in the order of the dishes, so some of the combinations would not have been my choice. The restaurant is small and did feel quite cramped. We sat near the bar where the lighting was quite harsh. The ambient music was ‘Spanish’ if you imagine yourself at a beach bar in Torremolinos listening to recycled Euro pop. It was too loud and was by far the most annoying aspect of our evening. It made us laugh though, so not all bad. It didn’t really feel like an authentic Spanish experience. It may be right up someone else’s street though. I don’t think we’ll be rushing back.
Great restaurant. Good food and service. Happy with price as well
The ingredients and the prep of the food was superb. But then, it always is!
Good food and service could have been a little bit warmer when we first took our table and background music got a bit monotonous after a while.
Really excellent service and food. Staff could not do enough for us, a thoroughly enjoyable restaurant and dining experience.
High quality varied tapas great choices lovely service
Great little tapas restaurant. Small and casual, good choice of food, wine and sherry. Staff very friendly
Tasty food, reasonably price, friendly efficient service. Great if you like sharing food as a group or with your partner.
Fantastic choice of reasonably priced tapas and wine.
Excellent food, relaxed atmosphere, friendly service. Good choice of sherry, but had ran out of Spanish red wine to have by the glass. A bigger choice of Spanish wines would be good.
Superb, as always. Food, wine, service: can't fault it
Quality food and excellent service - as always! One of the best in Exeter.
weekend in Exeter for wife"s birthday;found Cafe Catalan on line we both loveTapas
so decided to give it a try ;was not disappointed excellent service great tapas(as good as anything we have had in Spain} nice wine ;really enjoyed the overall experience;will definitely go back the next time we visit Exeter
We went for my partner's birthday and were very impressed. It was very quiet, however it is only a small place! Despite the quietness and cosy nature, it did not feel awkward at all and the waitress was very helpful and nice. We felt well looked after. The wine was lovely (we went for malbec, I think) and the tapas was by far the best we have had in Exeter, if not anywhere in the UK (and we like tapas!!). A special mention would be for the chicken with Spanish black pudding - the calamari was also especially tasty and melted in your mouth. It is a bit more pricy than we typically spend on a meal a recent graduates (~£60 for two for 6 tapas dishes, a bottle of wine, bread and olives, plus tip) but it was very much worth the money and we will be going back. Definitely recommend if you enjoy your food, or for a special occasion.
Everything was amazing and i was very full by the time i got home. The Staff were really friendly and nice and the food was the same. Well priced too!
We have been several times and it never fails to impress. Excellent (and authentic) food, great service and good value. What's not to like?
Cosy Spanish restaurant in St Leonards with friendly service and very good food and wine. Menu is based on "small" sharing dishes, but they are very generous for that description.
We go to Cafe Catalan a lot and we always really enjoy the food. Really liked the Portuguese balls special this time!
Excellent, as usual. Food, wine and service all brilliant. Great atmosphere. Can't fault it.
The food was authentic, delicious and great value. Service was friendly and helpful. Overall a really good experience. Highly recommended!
Amazing food and just enough for two people to have a good meal for under 35 pounds!
Tapas has been a favorite of mine long before it became fashionable in recent years and I've had it in mainland Spain, various Spanish islands and at some well known (and expensive) places in London. I would say the food at Cafe Catalan is equal to the best of anything I've had in the past and far better than a lot I've had. Whoever is in the kitchen is on top of their game. As well as the excellent food there is a good wine list and brilliant staff waiting on tables. It's also very reasonably priced. Can't fault it.
We ate early on a wet Wednesday evening so it's not surprising that we were alone in the restaurant. The food was excellent and the service friendly, even though I am not keen on being addresses as "guys" about twenty times. It's probably a generation thing! We would eat here again.
The food was incredible and the restaurant had a great atmosphere. The staff were friendly and the service was faultless. I will definitely be back!
Like the wealth of burger venues that seem to have filled Exeter, the City also seems to be full of tapas restaurants. All of which are good - although arguably you can't go too far wrong (ito the food, at least) - but this place does stand out as the best of the lot.
Food was excellent, some really interesting dishes and specials offered something different. Service was good despite restaurant being rammed full from pretty early on.
Location is excellent as well, being close to town but just outside the centre.
One point to consider, because it's such a small, intimate venue, you will more than likely need to book meals there.
Came for husbands birthday lunch. Shown to a small table for 2 and told we couldn't have the larger table for 2 as it was reserved. We were the only diners that lunchtime so if the table really was reserved no one turned up. The food was very nice on the whole. We had 2 dishes from the specials board and 4 others from the main menu , the lamb in one of them was chewy and had a lot of sinew in. Even though we were the only diners we had to ask for a second drink so not that attentive. We would go back for the food.
As always, great food and friendly service, but considering the cosy layout which should be conducive to chatting with partners and friends, we couldn't hear each other over the music - great music but way too loud so please turn it down to make for a really great evening.
Really great food and we picked a really good wine too. Service was a little slow but they were really busy so that's probably why. Would definitely recommend!
Delicious tapas, reasonably priced. Clear menu with interesting specials board. Excellent cheerful staff. Cosy as in a little, cramped. Wine was delicious it a little on the pricey side.
Great food, very authentic and well served. I'm really happy I've found Catalan and will definitely be a return customer. Highly recommended for sure.
Lovely meal in my favourite resturant to end my graduation day, perfect food and atmosphere.
Lovely food , very accommodating staff, supported and advised on my diet restrictions very well, only downside is the awful table by the door. When all of upstairs was empty. I get that you don't want your clients on both floors if not needed. But have you sat at this table for two hours on a cold evening. With all new customers brushing past you and leaving. Not comfortable, spoilt could have been an excellent all round experience for me.
We would recommend Cafe Catalan, we were visiting Exeter and just choose the restaurant as we both love tapas. We weren't disappointed, the food was excellent as was the wine. The restaurant staff were friendly and attentive without being obtrusive. We had a thoroughly lovely evening and would definitely go back next time we are in Exeter.
