Phenomenal food with friendly service and reasonable prices. A true gem!
This was our fourth or fifth time and still love the place. But we did notice something different in the ambiance. Usually we are greeted with a warm and inviting hello and when we leave, one of the chefs would run to the door to open it for us and thank us and bow. It always felt like they knew us personally, which of course they didn’t, but it felt like it. Anyway, there was none of that this time and it was a little disheartening, they didn’t know us anymore, 🙁

A nice restaurand in a great location. The menu choices are impressive and the food was very good. The music was too loud to have a conversation over dinner. Would have liked dessert but we had planned only 1.5 hours and our food was very slow coming out.

4th time here. Perfect meal every time. Fabulous service-considerate, discrete and efficient. The food...divine. Beautiful presentation and flavours that sing. Portion sizes are just right. A table of 4 - we each had a different menu item and each person raved about their meal. Duck done to perfection, gnocchi SO tender and delicious, scallops with perfectly al dente risotto... I highly recommend!
Good food good service good price point but i have to say the air conditioning wasn't great. Would still go back and plan to on a cooler night to enjoy it even more.

I have been here three times now and it’s getting worse and worse every time. The last time was the worst dining experience I've ever had in a long time. As another reviewer mentioned, I felt humiliated by their server. The server was an older man who has waited me and my husband before. He was okay then but it was so bad this time, he just didn’t care. I walked in and stood in front of him for a few minutes before he even looked up and asked if I had a reservation. His service was very slow - I even try to get his attention by raising my hand (a gesture I don’t like doing). The kitchen staff saw me trying to get his attention, talked to him, and still didn’t come over to our table. Sadly, it was just our table he was not nice to. There was a table with a reservation sign with someone’s name (obviously their acquaintance) and he went over there five times while we waited him to come back. He kept coming to the table next to ours, but just go back to the bar when he’s done with the table - even though we try to get his attention by raising our hand. He even looked at us! Perhaps because we were Asian and other customers were non-Asian? The worst part was when we asked for a bill. We asked him to split the bill for what we ordered and he just said he can’t. When I mentioned that the menu says they can (they just can’t do it for a table with more than four people), he said “The menu says a lot of things we don’t do.” He was rude and totally destroyed our dining experience. Food was good but with such a terrible service, my friends and I will not be going back.
Always great food, best quality and perfectly prepared. Service is exceptional with experienced staff. Always something special to try! Great wine list as well.

Appies were a little bland, but pasta and dessert was great. Need more white wine by the glass on the menu.
The service was very slow, it took 25 minutes before we got the deep fried calamari appetizer and 45 minutes before we got our meal. We were one of the first tables to arrive as well. when the food came, they forgot the squid in the pasta, I had to enquire about this before they made it right which took another 10 minutes.
the nanban was just basically udon noodle soup with a duck leg. It was nothing special and when paired with gnocchi it was just really weird. This is Japanese food fixed with gnocchi, prime example of fusion gone wrong.
The rack of lamb was lacking in its consistency, where the outside 2 pieces are well done and the 2 middle pieces are medium rare. It really shows the chef's lack of skill on handling lamb.
Finally, the pasta's portion really is pathetic. Other than the fact they forgot the squid, the portion was like a kids meal size. We asked for Spaghetti noodles, because the waiter proudly said that they can accommodate any type of noodles, only to be told afterwards they don't have Spaghetti.
Underwhelmed by the food quality and service, and still hungry, I ordered another dish called "Duck Two Ways", including smoked duck breast and seared foie gras. "Seared" was a bad sign. Turned out the foie gras was just a piece of disgusting duck fat. It was not foie gras at all. I wonder if the Japanese chefs really knew what foie gras is.
Another incident that ruined the experience was the chefs started arguing while we were still waiting for our meal. the argument was loud in Japanese and can be heard throughout the small restaurant from the open kitchen. I think they cracked under pressure while cooking.
The chefs' ramen at Carino was fantastic, they really should just stick to what they do best. There are some fundamental issues with the food served at Carino Riserva.
We have dined many many times there and were very disappointed with the service and food quality , it was like a totally diffferent place , we found the waitress confused and distracted to get our drink order , a big dumb grin does not fix slow service . The food normally is great but it is like there has been staff changes , sloppy plates , we all had the same pasta dish and each one had a different quantity of prawns , sausage and actual pasta with one of our dishes looking like soup instead of pasta
If the service had been normal we would have been able to get things corrected but too late
Who asks guest if they want coffee with their dessert as they are clearing empty dessert plates
The rack of lamb was superb again. Great night out for my Birthday.
Excellent service and an interesting menu. Prices were reasonable providing high value for creative cuisine. Rack of lamb was the best ever and hot pot appetizer with mussels and sausage was incredibly flavourful. This is our new favourite restaurant
My husband had the Spaghetti alle Pescatore and I had the Tagliatelle with Italian Sausage Rose Sauce. Our meals were exceptionally delicious and arrived promptly. We were on our way to a hockey game. Excellent value for a reasonable price. Small and cozy with an open kitchen. Will definitely return.
This was our first visit to this restaurant and we were not disappointed. The food was fantastic we had the lamb rack and the tenderloin and it was some of the best meat that we've had in ages! Wine selection was great and wine by the glass was reasonably priced. The service was friendly and efficient, they knew when to be there and when to leave us alone to enjoy our evening. I didn't get too much of the Japanese influence in our dishes but looking at the menu o think we chose it like that, next time we'all be way more adventurous, highly recommend
Carino Riserva was wonderful. You are so warmly welcomed when you arrive and given the most authentic send-off. We did the chef's tasting and it was delicious. The server was extremely perceptive. She automatically sensed that we were friends that were there to catch-up; thus ensuring everything came out in a timely manner and somehow magically appeared only when we needed something. The food is delicious, I must come back to try other things on the the menu. The lamb shank is to die for, delicious.
An amazing Japanese-Italian restaurant with ever-changing menu features. They take such a creative spin on two classic genres and really make it into a unique dining experience; one that is consistently perfectly executed.
As usual, Owners Mr. Toshi Karino and Mr. Eisaku Kuboki (head chef) along with their accomplished team, were exceptional in every way. Thank you for a great night. Our guests, first timers, enjoyed the experience and meal.
What a quaint n special place. They acknowledge you when you enter n thank you when you leave. The bruschetta was perfect, the soft crab with rissotto n mussels were delicious, the fries yummy n the char cooked just right! We ended the evening with a tiramisu n it was decadent (small serving but so good it will never be big enough). Highly recommend a visit.
We were there for a late valentine's dinner on Sunday the 19th and we were pleasantly surprised with the creativity of the dishes. We had the tuna tartar, mussel hot pot that was on special substituted with clams instead, the duck from the menu and the risotto that was on special. Everything was cooked beautifully with very good presentation.
I would have to say that the clam hot pot was a definite highlight as the broth was amazing. We had to order some bread to devour the rest of the soup once we finished off the clams. The tuna tartar was also very good and they refilled the chips free of charge which was very nice.
The head chef here is very enthusiastic and I love to see this as it made it memorable. We will be back.

The interesting & intriguing menu options, great service from a young waitress with a great smile & fun atmosphere, and reasonable price point.....everyone enjoyed their meals & look forward to returning soon.
Definitely one of our favorite restaurants in the city. Small but cosy with excellent friendly staff who are happy to provide recommendations and accommodate your preferences. The food is amazing and they always have something new and interesting - try the mushroom risotto and the rack of lamb, you won't regret it!
I went to this restaurant for Valentine's Day. They had a great four course menu put together with some great Italian-Japanese fusion flavours.

Food and service were exceptional!
We enjoyed our visit as the food was excellent but felt rushed out the door and had to ask the server to give us a break in between courses. It was Valentine's day and I think they tried to get too many people in and out and when you are having a 5 course meal, which was the only option, it was wrong to feel rushed. They also put us in the very back of the room with two other couples and we were so close to each other that it was awkward. I am assuming that usually they pull the 3 tables together for a larger group. All in all, I would like to visit again on a regular evening to see if our experience was just because it was Valentines - I sure hope so.

We had a delicious experience on Saturday evening with 3 of us for dinner, which began with the warm and inviting atmosphere of Carino Reserva. The place is small and intimate but enough room between tables you don't feel you are sharing your dinner with the people beside you, the kitchen is open and the professionalism and delicious smells cannot not go unnoticed! There were a dozen or so specials of the day not including a 5 course chefs tasting menu very reasonably priced. We had a bottle of white along with our choice of the special chorizo, mussel hot pot with a warm side of baguette and cold butter. We also shared the noodle 'nanban' which is a must! We then had a great bottle of red on the recommendation of one of the very friendly servers along with scallops on wild mushroom risotto, braised fall-off-the-bone lamb Shank and a daily feature whole fish seabass with a side of crispy hot classic French fries. Everything was rounded out by a superb Panna cotta before we left and will keep our promise to go back! Fantastic twist on a unpretentious French bistro who's food is deliciously memorable.
This was a great find in the busy neighbourhood of Mission. We will definitely go back. Food was delicious and unique. We ordered numerous items to share with the table so we could try a variety of their dishes. One of the table favourites was the Spicy Duck "Nanban". I know people say the cuisine is Japanese/Italian fusion but I felt it was either or and not both mixed together for the majority of the dishes. Still wonderful nonetheless.
No cocktails but great wine.
Service and hospitality were excellent. I loved that the chefs opened the door for us at the end of the evening and thanked us for coming to the restaurant. Service is so important.
Ambience could use some improvement. The restaurant is very small but very well lit so doesn't have an intimate feel to it.
Absolutely worth a try next time you are looking to change up your usual repertoire of restaurants.
