We had the pleasure of enjoying the YYC Dining Experience menu. It was delicious. The service was amazing. We were a little confused about why we would have had to wait as long as we did, though, for our food. We made a reservation for four people at 1 pm on a Thursday, thinking we'd grab lunch and be on our way. We barely made it out the door by 3, without exaggeration. There were few other diners and yet we waited a good, long wait for each course?!?! We didn't make an issue of it but were surprised by it. Also surprised that there was no explanation forthcoming. Not sure how long lunch usually takes but two hours seemed excessive to us. The wait time between each course was actually a bit awkward, to be honest. Otherwise, great!
Enjoyed Charbar for a business lunch, was great! Service was outstanding and a delicious, quick lunnch.
It was very cold when we dined at CharBar on Saturday night, with people at several tables opting to leave winter coats on.
The food was tasty, especially the empanadas, but the "ultra dry-aged" porterhouse was tough in a few spots and a bit of a disappointment. Seafood platter was great, and enjoyed the chimichurri sauce with the oysters (which were quite fresh).
Service was ok, but not great (e.g. our sparkling water topped up with tap water). Food took a long time coming (almost an hour) on a Saturday night when it didn't seem that busy.
I'll be back for the patio when it warms up!
I would half heartedly recommend Charbar. The food was very good however, the service was lacking. Our waiter was not well versed on the restaurant’s food and drinks and had to clarify with other service staff often. Not sure if he was new to waiting tables but, as this restaurant is $$$, one would expect a certain level of service which was not there. We ordered the prefixed menu. Our food had to be remade twice and service was slow. Dessert was delicious but very basic; 3 mini tarts on a plate with a little dollop of whipped cream on top. It took us just shy of 2 hours for my party to complete dinner with a long wait between the appetizers and main course. The manager did recognize there were issues and did adjust the tab. Had these issues not occurred, I would have fully recommended Charbar. I would be willing to give it another try.
This was my first time and I think I’ve found my new favorite place. If the food, wine, ambiance wasn’t enough, our server was impeccable and made us feel like we were the best table she’s ever had. I absolutely loved every moment. Well, except the desert. 😬
Even better than the first time! Though, sitting near kitchen was a bit noisy.
It's was so cold out and snowing.. and they left a window open next to us.
I froze and had to ask several times to close.
But food and waitress was amazing .
The porterhouse steak did NOT ha ve as much flavour as it did on Valentines Day. The Shrimp meat was stuck to the shells ( over tenderized) .. We should have told the waiter.. our demise.. Love the ambiance!
Excellent steak. Great service. Delicious
Great food, think my steak was a little under cooked. Wear a sweater as it is a bit drafty. Service was good
The service was great. The food fantastic.
My husband and I really enjoyed how we could share our food right down to the main course. We were able to experience a wide variety of food. Fantastic service too!
The only thing we didn’t like were the chairs by the oyster bar. A little uncomfortable
Another great meal at Charbar. Some good vegetarian options at a clearly meat oriented establishment!
Love Charbar! Their Porter House Stake is delicious, a little pricey but once we got a taste I would say worth it!
Two things not good about this restaurant
1. Yyou need a code to get into the bathrooms and no one - i mean no one tels you about it until you go downstairs to go to the bathroom - not the hostess, not the waitress, not the staff that watch you walk through the restaurant to the bathroom and when you ask someone in the back rooms when you are down in the hall way they tell you get out and not my job.
2. They offered our large group an custom made meal that would cater to the two gluten free staff in the group. They didn't manage the gluten free shared plates. I and my team member who is gluten free (both of us have allergies) were sick later on in the evening and all the next day
Good appetizers, but overpriced and very average mains. Disappointing.
Charbar has always been a fav of my wife and I.
Our first date was here and whenever we get to escape for a Staycation, this is our go to spot!
Waiter was knowledgeable and offered to bring wine samples when we were deciding what to order. Mains (steak and short ribs) were very well executed, but the ceviche starter was lacklustre. The open kitchen was a bit noisy, but it was interesting to see and the overall noise level was just fine as there was no music and the tables were well spaced. A very positive restaurant experience, but it was expensive. Perhaps not a great choice if you are looking for best value.
Ecellent overall. Suggest the wine list includes a house wine by caraff or glass as the bottles of wine are all at the expensive end of the spectrum. The chair seats are worn out and way too soft and should be replaced
Overpriced for what it is. The appetizer "special" was crab and was over-cooked to the point of comical. Plenty of other choices out there for next time.
It was fabulous as always!!! The staff are top notch...the food is consistently delicious...the ambience is very chichi...a fave of ours!!! Excellent!!!
The building itself was beautiful and had a great atmosphere. Our server was friendly but forgot about my drink.
The service was a bit slow. We ordered a steak, crab legs and fries.
The steak was delicious as were the fries but the crab so super dry and small for the price. Wouldn’t order the crab again.
Overall it was a good experience but it won’t be my top choice of restaurants in Calgary.
Great food, very cool location and ambience, always a go to for me.
The service was great, very friendly and helpful staff. However, the food was a big disappointment. Especially for the price. The raw oysters were delicious, but everything else was so over salted it was barley edible. For the high price range I would expect the food to have more flavor profile than just a heavy hand with salt! My son and husband had the tenderloin and ordered the roasted carrots to go with it. The plates arrived with absolutely no attention to food presentation at all. A rather meager tenderloin with a pile of purple carrots. Not the attractive presentation I would expect when dining out at a nice restaurant. I pay more attention to presentation in home cooked meals! We left feeling a bit ripped off to be honest. Will be giving it the swerve in the future.
Amazing food. Very cool building. I am going back again this week because I enjoyed it so much
I had a great experience here. It’s not an intimate setting but excellent for a group of friends enjoying fine food and drinks
Valentine’s booking weeks ago and they put us upstairs in the least romantic spot next to the loud, sad song singer and the drunken office party. (Who lets these resos in on Valentine’s Day?) We wished we were seated in the better area downstairs.
Food has declined in quality - our steak was flavourless and dry. Cauliflower was soggy and oily and the mushrooms at $9.00 were a tiny bowl dredged in butter. The fried cheese and sourdough sounded great but the cheese was almost burned dry so couldn’t even be spread on the hard as rock sourdough toasts.
Our waitress was nice but didn’t even know the prices of steak not offered on the menu but available to patrons.
This place may be okay for a regular dinner but we were truly let down this visit and won’t come back for special occasions.
If they could just fix the lighting so that it feels more like a restaurant and less like a cafeteria or like an interrogation room it would be perfect
The food was excellent and the atmosphere is beautiful. Our service was a little disappointing as it was slow and inattentive. But we would definitely come back.
Food is over priced so I am not going back also not recommend it.
No verity in food selection.
Definitely better then last week! However I found the empanadas salty. Could be a preference thing. But a definite improvement from last week.
Not the old charbar as I’ve experienced in the past. Most of our dishes were way too salty. The ceviche marinade was brown, not like the original, and very disappointing.
The sable fish was deep fried or had some kind of coating on it - why alter something like sablefish which is already very flavourful?
We won’t be back for a long while. So many better choices in Calgary. Maybe their meat offerings are better? Sorry all.
We had a great evening celebrating a good friends birthday! Our server was excellent!!
Stopped for lunch while in Calgary for a dog show. Great location by the river. We shared a pizza and the hamburger. The crust of the pizza was unlike any other we have tasted. Made with a sourdough starter, it was both crispy on the bottom and light and fluffy throughout. Very nice.
The double patty hamburger with cheese and avocado was delicious as well. Unlike most burgers that tend to be overly seasoned and salty, the flavour of the quality meat used to make the patties shone through.
Nice cocktail menu, as well as absolutely delicious coffee from the adjoining coffee roasters and bakery.
We would like to return to try the dinner menu the next time we are in Calgary.
Kevin and Key offered our large group of 9 an amazing and memorable experience! The food was phenomenal, very delicious :)
Coffee timing needs to be addressed — waited over 20min for coffee top-up, finally just left. Phil & Seb coffee is absolutely delicious, but they really do seem to be taking advantage of the relationship by not prioritizing Charbar coffee orders.
I’m torn about our evening ......We enjoyed the unique ambience and found our waitress very pleasant but quite busy for high quality service we expected. The food was “ok”, but very expensive. We had a deep dish mushroom pizza which was nicely done. Unfortunately the charred octopus appie is not worth the $. Also had a 10 oz. new york strip steak that was slightly under done and a bit fatty Mushroom side was disappointing. Overall a unique dining experience but not recommended if you are looking for value evening and outstanding food.
Food and service were great but the quantity of food you got for how expensive it was was ridiculous. 1 single beef short rib for $40? Was a good experience but won't be back.
Amazing porterhouse steak and great service.
I haven’t been there in a while. The food was ok. I was surprised it wasn’t amazing as i remembered. French toast bites are burned and under cooked inside. Beef sausage was very dry. I did mention this but the staff didn’t do much about that. My bill was 70.00 for ok food. I know they can do better that’s why I’m being honest.
