Located in East Village and housed in the historical Simmons Building along the Bow River, charbar is spearheaded by executive chef Jessica Pelland with the support of co-owners and Top Chef chefs Connie DeSousa and John Jackson. One of Canadas best restaurants partners with Sidewalk Citizen Bakery and Phil & Sebastian Coffee Roasters to create a collaborative and communal destination. Charbar restaurant features cuts of ultra-dry aged Alberta beef and an ocean wise seafood raw bar, that spills out onto the open air riverfront patios with views of the bow river.     I do not think you will find more nuanced and vibrant flavours in the East Village area. The Argentinian inspired spicing is revealed in Alberta proteins and earthy side dishes. Complimented by creative cocktails and the brutish framing of the old Simmons factory makes the is a must experience for a group of your friends.

    I just found the menu a bit disjointed and basic. I was expecting something different I suppose. It’s a nice place and made for a great meetup followed by a quick walk to the central library. I couldn’t help but notice that it was very empty for a Sunday but perhaps the brunch crowd is not who they are targeting.

    The food was horrible. I ordered the hamburger - no flavour, the bun was cold and seemed old. The service was awful as well. Only after serving us and then 35 minutes later came to ask how it was. I could not even get her attention to get pepper. I will never go back, and it used to be one of my favourites. Don't waste your time or money when there are so many good restaurants in Calgary.

    I’m not a fan of the upstairs seating. It feels like an afterthought and doesn’t have the same vibe as downstairs. The music helps but it feels like a big impersonal event space. Also our food was average at best and more on the cold side. My favourite Napa cabbage salad was ruined with way too much salt. Very disappointing and way too expensive for what we got. Our bill was $500 for 4 of us before tip. Used to be one of my favourites but I won’t be back.

    Our server Ali / Aly had given us attitude from the start, refused to take our order until after being seated for 45 mins and our food came out room temp, she only offered to re-heat our steak. She did give us a few good recommendations I will admit, just couldn’t take the negative attitude Cherry I too was hearing the management and server make comments after learning about the minimal tip. Sad this is I’ve had locks of great experience here, generally come 4-6 times a year. This was a first date also. Can guarantee I’m never coming or recommend charbar again, especially for future work meetings. Nice atmosphere though.

    Had early reso at 5 , service was ok ,,very… here is the Menu .. came back what would like ?was not busy at all . No real description or anything pointed out on the menu of interest , food was good and the atmosphere is cool . Will not return , will try other options next time .

    it was a date, service kept changing and was awkward and bad timings when a waiter would come to the table or not, the food is not what it used to be. the noise level was too loud, zero ambiance, we sat upstairs and it’s just not as nice up there.

    It was tasteless, cold regular steaks for $50+ each, which is too unprofessional to eat in addition to the tasteless sour side dishes. Walmart's homemade meat BBQ will taste 100 times better than wasted money here. Unprofessional staff, especially the second floor manager, who doesn't like to wear a bra and confuses visitors with her appearance, has distinguished herself with her boorish behavior and tip demands. It was the pinnacle of unprofessionalism on Valentine's Day and we will remember for a long time. We spent about $150 for a tasteless dinner and our mood was absolutely ruined by the unprofessional staff of the restaurant. We strongly do not recommend this restaurant.

    Went for the Valentines fixed menu, was a decent amount of variety but limited on the quantities. The dessert was flan and tasted like it was de-thawed from frozen which was disappointing (watery). Will go back for the beef dishes.

    Fantastic all around. But I always wonder, why not open up the second floor? No real complaints whatsoever. Any restaurant that stays consistently good for this long is worth revisiting in kind. It seems a lot of places inevitably decline in quality as they become more firmly rooted in a city or community.
