Thomas Makris, from the Island of Skopelos, fell in love when he met Helen Babalos. They met at Orestes Greek restaurant in 1974, while on a Greek dancing tour of North America. Soon after their marriage, they had a vision to open a place like no other in Vancouver; a Greek restaurant where everyone is family; where everyone receives a consistent experience created by delicious homemade authentic food and impeccable service. In 1984 they opened Anatoli Souvlaki in north Vancouver. In 2011 their sons Alexi and Iani took over the restaurant and early 2015 they expanded on their parents original dream, in a new venture with their cousin Daniel Bergman, Alexi and Iani opened ‘The Greek by Anatoli’ in Yaletown. ‘The Greek by Anatoli’ focuses on small share plates or “mezze”.

Opening their first location in the spring of 1984, Helen Babalos & Thomas Makris brought us Anatoli Souvlaki. They had a dream of combining the food of Greece with great service to add some Mediterranean style to the North Vancouver restaurant selection. They opened in the sleepy neighbourhood of lower Lonsdale and lived above the restaurant to ensure the quality and service. They were able to create a North Vancouver staple, a successful thriving restaurant based on faithful patrons and a reputation that has been passed through generations.In 2011, the family-run restaurant was taken over by their sons Alexi and Iani.     Always a great restaurant. Food is tasty, well done and portions are plentiful. Service is friendly . Though last night we felt a little rushed. Entrees arrived while we were still enjoying our appetizers. Though a very pleasant evening was had. My friend Grace thought our waiter was really cute. LOL Not that it matters.

    Our dinner was delicious, but what really made our evening exceptional was our server, Aiden. He remembered our names, as well as details about each of us. He seemed genuinely interested in us and his recommendations for menu items were spot on. His personal attention made our dining experience memorable.     We had a great experience here! Wonderful service and the food was a big hit! Everything from the great bread, well prepared calamari /prawns, rave worthy lasagne and delicious pork chop to the gelato at the end was well executed. So glad we gave it a try… definitely will go back!
