Thomas Makris, from the Island of Skopelos, fell in love when he met Helen Babalos. They met at Orestes Greek restaurant in 1974, while on a Greek dancing tour of North America. Soon after their marriage, they had a vision to open a place like no other in Vancouver; a Greek restaurant where everyone is family; where everyone receives a consistent experience created by delicious homemade authentic food and impeccable service. In 1984 they opened Anatoli Souvlaki in north Vancouver. In 2011 their sons Alexi and Iani took over the restaurant and early 2015 they expanded on their parents original dream, in a new venture with their cousin Daniel Bergman, Alexi and Iani opened ‘The Greek by Anatoli’ in Yaletown. ‘The Greek by Anatoli’ focuses on small share plates or “mezze”.

Opening their first location in the spring of 1984, Helen Babalos & Thomas Makris brought us Anatoli Souvlaki. They had a dream of combining the food of Greece with great service to add some Mediterranean style to the North Vancouver restaurant selection. They opened in the sleepy neighbourhood of lower Lonsdale and lived above the restaurant to ensure the quality and service. They were able to create a North Vancouver staple, a successful thriving restaurant based on faithful patrons and a reputation that has been passed through generations.In 2011, the family-run restaurant was taken over by their sons Alexi and Iani. In 2015, the brothers, alongside their cousin Daniel Bergman, expanded on their parent’s dream by opening The Greek in Yaletown, with a focus on mezze-style dining. Now open in Gastown. The Greek is a reinterpretation of the North Shore's iconic Anatoli Souvlaki.

    A small family run restaurant that fills up quickly on a Saturday night. The high level of the chef is evident in the presentation and preparation of a traditional Greek menu. I had the moussaka and my friend had the roast lamb, both were divine and offering generous portions. (The lemon garlic prawns as a shared appetizer were very yummy too.) A good bang for your money! Combined with a choice of refreshing cocktails and wine makes for a satisfying and delicious meal! I will definitely be back.

    Our favorite Greek food in Yaletown! We happened to catch Happy Hour and the value is fantastic. Our group of six ordered familia style, shared various dishes and the drink menu is just as good. We ordered a few of their amazing Greek salads, greek potatoes, zucchini slices, chicken souvlaki, the Mezze platter which had a little bit of everything, including 2 chicken souvlaki, rice, calamari, Greek salad, lamb, pita, spanokapita and tzatsiki). Everything was delicious and filling. Our server was friendly, knowledgeable and great at serving us. The atmosphere is always wonderful and keeps us coming back! Thank you for a wonderful Saturday afternoon 😊
