North Beach
About the restaurant
Chef & co-owner, Mario and his delightful wife, Stephanie, have a knack for making you feel as if they are cooking and serving just for you at this super-reasonable North Beach nook offering robust Southern Italian fare reminiscent of his native Naples; whether you’ve snagged an outdoor table or are in the small, casual interior, it delivers a pasta fix. The menu changes daily to ensure freshness.

Caffè Macaroni continues to be one of San Francisco’s very best & most authentic Italian restaurants. Extensive menu, great food, very friendly staff, and a classic North Beach setting. You can spend a lot more to eat “upscale” pseudo-Italian food at places like Aquerello or Sorella. At the latter, the manager will tell you that you need to leave after an hour or so to make way for the next round of guests. Never mind that you’re being charged a small fortune for the brief time you’re there. Head to Caffe Macaroni!

Overall, excellent. The food was amazing, astounding, surprising, delightful, delicious at every turn. Yet improvements are possible, including: Servers tried to set a faster pace for the meal than the diners wanted. They seemed oblivious when a disabled man dropped stuff under the table and could not retrieve it. They were more performative than interactive. There were bites without drink pairings. the Wagyu add-on was so large as to be out of character with the rest of the servings. Giving away the elegant menu at the end is brilliant, but a less elegant version at the table would help diners better understand and appreciate the meal. Some people are better readers than listeners. The tables were just a bit too close together and a little too small. Please understand that these things did not make a big impact on the overall feeling of excellence and satisfaction of an extraordinary meal. But as Camus said, freedom is nothing but an opportunity to get better
