East is East - Broadway Ratings and Reviews
We thoroughly enjoyed our dinner with our 2 kids.. delicious, healthy food, lovely ambiance, pleasant live music. Can't wait to go back.
Food excellent as ever.
We had a great dinner. We ordered the chicken masala, basmati rice, hummus and the mushroom soup. They were all delicious. The chai tea with almond milk was a nice starter.
Delicious food and great service. It's a beautiful spacious restaurant. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.
The staff are delightful and the dishes are wonderful. The chefs knows their spices. Every time we go for dinner I feel like our dining experience is an adventure for our palette.
Love the new space. Eclectic and fun. Servings are generous. Spicing exquisite. The only downside was a $10 Caking fee for bringing your own birthday cake for them to serve it.
I made a reservation at East is East on Broadway to host a celebration dinner with a large group of people with various dietary restrictions. The menu is very approachable for vegans, vegetarians, and gluten free people, and the staff were wonderful with accommodating extra people last minute into the reservation. We had great live music that served as a graceful background to the otherwise fantastic ambiance of the new location. Highly recommend to anyone looking for a great place to go out with friends!
Very different dining experience- food is wonderful, setting unique, live music!
Food was great. Service was great -had three children under 9 and they enjoyed it. Had lunch and dinner there
The overall experience was fine. The only issue I had was there was no place to hang a coat. When we ask the server she said there only room to accommodate staff coats. When I asked what we were to do if we did not want to sit on our coats she shrugged her shoulders and walked away. Not a great start to an evening.
I was blown away by the vibrancy and complexity of the taste of the food. The staff were also very friendly and accomodating.
Great place. Fantastic food at a reasonable price. The only negative is the uncomfortable chairs.
Excellent food and great ambiance. The decor was beautiful, service fantastic and live music added to a very enjoyable and uniquely memorable evening!!!
Great food in a warm and inviting atmosphere. Live music is at the perfect level, not too loud, great musicians. The hosts were up front with us about the small fee that they charge as a donation to the musicians, which is a system I prefer to having to drop money in a hat. The feast menu was delicious, you can order more of anything, which is awesome, but would be better if the dishes were smaller so you actually could order more plates! I was stuffed after the initial two dishes. The chai tea sample we were given was unreal, pretty much the best chai I've ever tasted. I will definitely return, great experience.
A great new location with lots of (comfortable) seating and a nice atmosphere. Food was great with lots of options for smaller portions or sharing although the menu is a bit confusing and does not really explain this- so be sure to ask your server. Music was fabulous; there are not many places where you get live music anymore. Kudos to the restaurant for inviting patrons to add a few dollars to their bill for the musicians. This will easily become a regular haunt.
Excellent service. Tables not designed for comfort but ok. Food was great.
I really like the food here, the decor and experience.
It is a bit pricey, the multi choice option is kind of confusing, too much food if you go that route, but wonderful if you are hungry.
Overall though I will keep coming back for the tasty soups, salads, and the wonderful lamb curry.
Booked 2 weeks in advance to be seated first in an area that our party of 10 would definitely not fit, ask what the seafood of the day is and we were told they were not sure as the kitchen staff could not tell “some sort of whitefish”, we were informed of the chai feast that was a great dish as you would be trying multiple dishes don’t waste your money not worth it, our service was slow with many dishes coming out cold and one guest was forgotten all together we all were eating while he was still sitting and waiting! I asked to speak to the manager who did very minimal to rectify the issues.
We arrived at the restaurant on time, and found out it is closed for business for a while, with no sign outside to indicate when and why. We are most disappointed with your reservation service, to make us a reservation when the business no longer exists.
Great place. Love the tea.. Usually go to the one on Main but this time we tried the one on Broadway. It was much noisier and smaller. But food and service was great.
I will probably recommend the one on main over the one on Broadway.
Been visiting for a few years now, and the food or service has never let me down. Great vegetarian options. Highly recommended!
The food is so good and they can easily do vegan and gluten free options for a lot of their menu with no problem (even the roti rolls!). I really enjoy their food and we even order extra to take home with us at the end of the meal. My only mild criticism is that the benches are a bit uncomfortable - on one side of the table it is a flat wooden bench with no back support and on the other side it is a bench with a thin cushion but you need to sit at the edge of the bench to be close enough to the table. For the younger people this is likely no problem but I need some extra support for my old bones. There are cushions they provide that you can use but no back support. I like this restaurant so much I bring my own cushions - small price to pay for the great food! They are likely trying to recreate the typical Afghan dining experience where you would typically sit on the floor (and then I would need someone to help me get up so the benches are appreciated). They greet you with great Chai tea - so tasty.
They don't actually let you reserve in advanced. Though we filled out the online form and called in advanced they did not honour our desired table and my group and I had to wait half an hour for the table which was meant to be reserved for us. The food was wonderful per usual, though next time I won't waste my time reserving online.
Ambiance was fine. Service was great. Had the tasting menu with several courses that you can re-order along the way. Most dishes were tasty and nicely prepared and served. The salmon and fish curries were inedible- just tasted rubber-y like it's been frozen and re cooked. Quality of the fish just tasted poor and not fresh- so if the restaurant management/owner reads this, please take it off the menu or get better quality fish....
Live music on weekends.
Great for dates and friends getting together.
Little pricey for the offering, in other words the menu size relative to the price is a little on the small side. Indeed, there is the option of getting a sort of all-you-can-eat option (feast) for $27 per person, but it's not what I initially thought. Overall, a good place, not noisy, good ambiance, and most food is tasty, although it may be tweaked a little bit to get on the more Afghan side not Indian...
Did not realize this location did not serve alcohol and the corkage fee for wine was very expensive. The menu was also different than the location on main street.
The chai samples were a lovely way to be introduced to the restaurant and added value to our experience. The service was polite and attentive, but the yes/no "do you have questions about our menu" could have been more clarifying. It took a while for us to figure out the options. We found portion size to be a decent value, but all of our meals weee disappointing. One of our party ordered a white fish curry and couldn't eat it because the fish had been over cooked to toughness. We thought the flavour was okay, but she didn't even like that. When she finally told the server, she was offered another fish curry which was brought to our table in a takeout container while the rest of us were finishing our food. I couldn't understand why. We were disappointed to find that the fish curry once again was over-cooked, only this time, since it was salmon, it had fallen apart and was soupy. My partner and I shared a double wrap of the mango chicken and spinach paneer. We appreciated being about to have the spinach paneer substituted into the wrap. While mild, it was probably the tastiest item we had. Both wraps, however, required condiments to spice them up. This is notable since neither of us has overly spice-tolerant palettes.
Great interior design - would be good on a cold night. Really helpful staff re BYO wine which I hadn't known about.
Really good food, great love music created a really nice mood
I love East is East! The food is always delicious!
The food is very ethnically delicious! The menu may seem small but the dishes can be filling. I've been here a few times before and it meets my expectations everytime. This locations seems to be a tad quieter than the one on Cambie, so you can hear each other better. I love the overall atmosphere; as if you've escaped the city for even just a meal!
The broadway east is east servers told me that they don't really take reservations from OpenTable! Then, you should take your restaurant off!!
I have been to this restaurant on a number of occasions and thoroughly enjoyed the food as well as the ambience. Have to say though that our last visit, on a Saturday between 6 and 8 pm, was not at all relaxing and enjoyable. It felt more like a fast food / smoothie bar. The blender kept going on throughout our meal which was quite nerve-racking as it droned out any possibility of conversation. The hustle of the servers going back and forth from the kitchen just showed how busy they were but kept their cool.., kudos to the staff. It did bother me as I faced the curtains that separated the dining area from the kitchen and washrooms watching the plates of food being brought out brush the curtains each time the server passes. All I could think of was hopefully those curtains are cleaned daily. I would be concerned of contamination possibly from someone using the washroom and not washing their hands and touching the curtains to get through then a server coming through with a plate of food ugh
Just my experience this Saturday March 25.
Don't judge the book by its cover. And once inside, embrace the old world charm which makes you feel you are in a different country. Service was great, and while we waited for our seat to be ready they served tasters of food and of their tea and smoothies. Yes, smoothies, and they are surprisingly very good! But best of all the food was outstanding... great depth and complexity to the spices, the meats were moist, the variety was excellent. Overall a great value for dinner out with friends in a fun atmosphere with excellent food.
Does get loud, but great for groups.
Big Thanks, your staff were wonderful with my daughter. She has allergies and is very shy to dine out. Our waitress made her feel very comfortable and I am sure she will be a return customer for you.
The Silk Route Feast is a must try if it is your first time. The ambiance was quiet and comfortable for the get together with my friend. The service was friendly and accommodating. The food was yummy :)
Authentic delicious cuisine! Fantastic service and great value! Something for everyone. Meat eaters, vegans, you name it! We went for a ladies get together/birthday and we all want to return with our husbands. So much variety and there's an all you can eat option with unlimited choices.
Fabulous as always. We enjoy the shabby chic interior design with funky carved tables and benches. Can never resist getting the Silk Route Feast just so we can have a sampler of many different dishes and flavours. The way it is served in little individual trays for each person, with little side dishes of each element is part of the enjoyment.
Extremely tasty food, but the seating could be improved. The wooden benches were hard to sit on and difficult to move into a comfortable position alongside the table. Will definitely be coming here again, as the menu had many interesting sounding items on it and we could only try a few.
