East is East - Main St
As evening descends upon the vibrant city of Vancouver, Chai Lounge comes to life like the courts of the eastern Raja's. Imagine a warm, dreamy and visually arresting venue where global sounds cascade the room over the din of lively conversations. Spicy scents waft from the kitchen followed by an abundance of delicious trans-himalayan cuisine.
Chai Lounge is our landmark location. There is no place like it in Vancouver, and visitors from near and far marvel at the ornate carpets, ceiling mandala's, and the nature-inspired furnishings.
The large central stage features a rotating line-up of world class musicians and dancers. We ask for a small patronage fee of $3 per person which goes to support all the live local music at East is East. Because we are very busy we hold tables for 2 hours. We look forward to serving you.
Love the service, decor, food. Only downside is that we were sitting quite close to the door and it was chilly whenever anyone came in or left. I appreciate the compostable take out boxes too.
Amazing food, amazing atmosphere.
I love east is east. The live music is wonderful and entertaining but never so loud that you cannot have a comfortable conversation.
Great food and live performance!
I have been a few times now and the first time was nice, but every since it has not excited me and the service has not been great. I also feel like the valentine's day cover charge was quite the scam as the music/entertainment and food was no different. There needs to be a menu change and the service needs to improve for the price. Quite unprofessional on the phone and slow when we were there.
The service was impeccable from start to finish. Everyone was happy to be there and greet us with a very welcoming demeanor. Amazing vegan options for me, and non-vegan options for my husband (the Pirate Chai with almond beverage is my new favorite drink - highly recommend). The entertainment is unique to the area and absolutely wonderful. Very warm atmosphere, loved the detail in the decor. Will be back for sure!
Made reservation and came for Valentine's dinner with my bae. After we stepped in, we were greeted with a warm sampler cup of Soy Chai (which was super nice for such a snowy night) while we wait for out seats! We were seated right in front on the stage (another WOW experience). All the performers were superb - a good mixture of Romance and fun. Our waitress was really patient with us. Good service. Good atmosphere. Good food. What else can we ask for? Thank you for the memorable experience!
Went with my girlfriend on Valentines Day and were late ack! Had a reso and called them and they were more than accomodating not saying you should ever be late for a reso. Service was perfect. Server was very kind while explaining the menu and very attentive afterwards. Never had an empty water glass. Dropped a fork on the ground by accident and no one saw me and in under two minutes someone brought me a new fork. Food was fantastic! Did the feast menu for $35 which is unlimited dishes. The 4 I had were all great. Enjoyed the live music on stage and had a lively atmosphere. 10 outta 10 would come again
Wonderful dining experience.
Loved our server.
Looking forward to our next visit
Food and ambiance were good, but beware the complementary chia you are given as you enter. Mine was scalding hot and my taste buds remain seared, two days later.
Great food and great music I love this place.
Affordable and unique dishes to share.
The belly dancer was very talented and fun to watch.
I could not recommend East is East enough. The atmosphere and the whole vibe was one of a kind. The food was delicious. We chose to have the Chai Feast (tasting menu for $35) which included a salad and soup and allowed us to try practically all the mains! The chai tea was yum! And you can get them as alcoholic beverages. There was also a live band playing which really put the bow on the whole thing. The entire experience was incredible.
The music was too loud for me so I asked to be moved. Even though it was not crowded, everyone was seated close to one another.
I would recommend this place to everyone for a unique experience. The food was amazing and the waitress had a good knowledge of the food and excellent recommendation on what to try. The ambiance was even better! The restaurant was a little on the dark side but the live music and the dance performance was absolutely lovely. Did not mind at all to paying an artist/cover charge for the performance. Would recommend this place for people looking for a unique and fun experience without having to leave Vancouver.
East is East is a great and lively dining experience. The live music and dancing was great. The food was amazing and I loved the Feast menu. I would very much recommend!
Good food and a nice ambiance. We had the special combination of dishes for Dine Out Vancouver.
It's pretty pricey, though. I paid $60 including tip and I only drank water.
Food was great but.....It took us 20 minutes to get served and an hour for our food and then we were asked to leave even before the 2 hours went by because the next party was there for their reso. That was not good. Also three dollars each for entertainment and the dancers started after we left.
Wait time for a table was a bit too long for my liking but the food made up for it :)
Get the Chai Feast! Just do it. I was blown away by how good this place is. It has taken me years to try it - and I am mad I did not try it sooner:)
Good food however terrible service. Took forever to get wine glasses delivered and didn't excute delivery of food well either. Poor attention to detail
Been here multiple times. Came here for a date on Friday and it was amazing. There was live music, belly dancing but our table
was quiet enough to have a wonderful conversation. Their vegan Chai and chocolate pudding are amazing. Healthy but sooo tasty menu options. Love it here.
I really enjoyed the dinner at East is East. I called ahead to make sure that my Open Table reservation for my birthday was received. The woman I spoke to was very warm and told me about the birthday dessert and confirmed the reservation.
The food was great but service was lacking. Our server frequently disappeared and we were looking around to find someone to bring us knives and more water. She was gone for the entirety of our meal and came back after we were finished. We’d been there for 1.5 hours now and had another engagement to be at. We weren’t offered my birthday dessert. Our server wasn’t aware of the reason for reserving a table even though I’d spoken to the host beforehand, and I filled out this option when booking the table on OpenTable. Our server ID’d me and still didn’t realize or offer.
Amazing everytime! I love this place. The live entertainment and soothing ambience of Himalayan salt makes this place a special gem.
Amazing food and live music. I was my first time coming here and I will definitely be coming back!
Food is great and nice atmosphere
Delicious food, great atmosphere including Flamenco show.
Our host was really slow and careless
The food is delicious and the serving generous. I used to come with my girl friends for a night out and this time I brought my children , and they loved it equally. Quality ingredients, healthy meal always appreciated! And always something
Going on on the stage ! Looking forward to come back
Always great to be there with great food and staff
Amazing service, food and ambience. I can always count on East is East for a memorable experience
Musicians were excellent. It was a really enjoyable volume so I could converse with my friends and also tune into the music when it was really impressive (which it was throughout).
Food was delicious and small enough so you could try a few different dishes and also plenty of food to enjoy. Tasty and spicy and yummy. Servers were pleasant and nice and relaxed.
Will come back regularly and recommend to friends.
Live music was a great concept, but we were placed right beside the stage so it was a little hard to talk over the music. Other than that food was delicious, lots of food selections, endless dishes was definitely a bonus. The $3 dollar per person thing for the band was okay because we sorta enjoyed the music but was probably not worth the 21 dollars we paid total as a group.
we've been going to east is east for a long time. although since we moved away from the lower mainland we hadn't been there for a couple of years. we still enjoy the food, but it would be nice if the spicy dishes could have less spicy options, such as chicken masala, the lamb curry and the daal, specially for kids. the service was also slow. we had ordered the silk road trays and had to wait quite a long time for refills. the initial rice served with the trays is a small portion so if you would like to have enough rice for the 2 stews you get you have to ask for the rice refill as soon as your tray arrives. it seemed the restaurant was understaffed. our waitress didn't seem to have time to come and check on our table to see if we needed anything after the food was served.
A wonderful evening, delicious with lots of varriety -Glad we made reservations
Really delicious food, beautiful decor, quiet music. Our lunch group of 5 could talk together without yelling.
This was by far the worst in any of the Indian restaurants I’ve tried in North America, both in terms of quality and price. To begin with, the restaurant didn’t offer any standard fare as part of their “Indian fusion” positioning and that made it hard to evaluate any of the offerings. That said, there wasn’t anything that was flavourful, let alone delectable. Sadly, my spouse and I had to stop over for another bite else where to satiate our appetite.
The entertainment quotient was spot on, thanks to live performance. Two thumbs up for the performers!
Overall, I’d strongly urge you not to form a palate for Indian food based on this restaurant. A clear no-go for me.
This place has great ambiance, especially with the wuiet music in the background, but I can't get over how uncomfortable it is. We came here for our anniversary via OpenTable reservation, and they tried to sit us within elbows reach of complete strangers (literally right beside them). I find this pretty appaling. This isn't a university bar, it is a restaurant. I am also confused at the whole "trees and wood" theme. Are they saying that Eastern culture is primitive? Because that's the idea I am given when seated at chairs and tables that are extremely uncomfortable. Why do you have rickety, unlevel chairs and tables made from trees? This is just stupid. It is complete novelty and not practical (nor "Eastern") at all. The food was okay, but definitely not worth the price you pay. I would not recommend this place to anyone unfortunately. However, if they got their act together and properly designed the restaurant for functional seating, and didn't charge up the but for "okay" food, then I'd gladly go back.
You really can't go wrong with their tasting menu. Every dish is spiced and cooked to perfection. The music is beautiful - sometimes other tables can be a little loud while the musicians/dancers are performing, but not enough to detract from the experience. Wonderful restaurant - our Vancouver favourite.
Fantastic food and atmosphere. Went with a group of friends on the Gypsy Jazz night, they always have live music starting 7-7:30pm, different music styles each day. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate and you are welcomed with a small cup of chai, to give you time to order.
Went for the Chai Feast, the fixed price menu option which consists of a soup, salad plus 2 or more veg or non-veg options, which you can chose for the whole 2 hours length that is covered by your reservation
Great experience, wonderful and attentive service!
