East is East - Main St
As evening descends upon the vibrant city of Vancouver, Chai Lounge comes to life like the courts of the eastern Raja's. Imagine a warm, dreamy and visually arresting venue where global sounds cascade the room over the din of lively conversations. Spicy scents waft from the kitchen followed by an abundance of delicious trans-himalayan cuisine.
Chai Lounge is our landmark location. There is no place like it in Vancouver, and visitors from near and far marvel at the ornate carpets, ceiling mandala's, and the nature-inspired furnishings.
The large central stage features a rotating line-up of world class musicians and dancers. We ask for a small patronage fee of $3 per person which goes to support all the live local music at East is East. Because we are very busy we hold tables for 2 hours. We look forward to serving you.
Dinner: Sunday - Thursday: 4:30pm - 10:30pm
Dinner: Friday & Saturday: 4:30 pm - 11:30 pm
Whether you are a music lover, or just a casual listener interested in expanding your musical vocabulary, Chai Lounge is a gateway to an exciting world of sound.
This was by far the worst in any of the Indian restaurants I’ve tried in North America, both in terms of quality and price. To begin with, the restaurant didn’t offer any standard fare as part of their “Indian fusion” positioning and that made it hard to evaluate any of the offerings. That said, there wasn’t anything that was flavourful, let alone delectable. Sadly, my spouse and I had to stop over for another bite else where to satiate our appetite.
The entertainment quotient was spot on, thanks to live performance. Two thumbs up for the performers!
Overall, I’d strongly urge you not to form a palate for Indian food based on this restaurant. A clear no-go for me.
This place has great ambiance, especially with the wuiet music in the background, but I can't get over how uncomfortable it is. We came here for our anniversary via OpenTable reservation, and they tried to sit us within elbows reach of complete strangers (literally right beside them). I find this pretty appaling. This isn't a university bar, it is a restaurant. I am also confused at the whole "trees and wood" theme. Are they saying that Eastern culture is primitive? Because that's the idea I am given when seated at chairs and tables that are extremely uncomfortable. Why do you have rickety, unlevel chairs and tables made from trees? This is just stupid. It is complete novelty and not practical (nor "Eastern") at all. The food was okay, but definitely not worth the price you pay. I would not recommend this place to anyone unfortunately. However, if they got their act together and properly designed the restaurant for functional seating, and didn't charge up the but for "okay" food, then I'd gladly go back.
You really can't go wrong with their tasting menu. Every dish is spiced and cooked to perfection. The music is beautiful - sometimes other tables can be a little loud while the musicians/dancers are performing, but not enough to detract from the experience. Wonderful restaurant - our Vancouver favourite.
Fantastic food and atmosphere. Went with a group of friends on the Gypsy Jazz night, they always have live music starting 7-7:30pm, different music styles each day. The atmosphere is cozy and intimate and you are welcomed with a small cup of chai, to give you time to order.
Went for the Chai Feast, the fixed price menu option which consists of a soup, salad plus 2 or more veg or non-veg options, which you can chose for the whole 2 hours length that is covered by your reservation
Great experience, wonderful and attentive service!
never disappoints. Great food, great atmosphere, great quality
Great food. Nice place to take out of town guests for some fairly authentic Indian food. Nice selection of Chai tea.
Don't think you should be charging $3 for entertainment. There wasn't even any entertainment when we first arrived - it started later. Your place is packed on a Friday night and we were there at 5:30. Surely you can make enough money without charging $3 per person. MAYBE $1 but even that is tacky.
Food was ok - overpriced for a dish of chicken without any sides. If it was great food, the price would be fine, but it was only mediocre.
This is one of the most amazing restaurants we have ever been to. Not only is it delicious and esthetically pleasing, the food accomodates Vegan, Vegetarian, Gluten Free and Meat Eaters alike. Every time we have quests from out of town, we bring them for the taster menu and it's always a hit. The servers are friendly, courteous and efficient. The value is amazing. We come home so full, we feel we won't eat for days. The spices and flavours are so full and vibrant yet not overpowering or too spicy. It is a genuine treat for all.
Great food with amazing atmosphere. Strongly recommending Chai feast, especially the green salads, and the soups, plus fish, lamb and Salmon curry. Go before 6:30pm if you want to have conversations, but do head over after 7pm for live music!
One of my favourite places, best chai, best Dahl, great service
We went to East is East for our anniversary dinner and it did not disappoint! With free chai tea at the start of your meal, to the live music and flamenco show, and the complimentary dessert... it was amazing! The staff were attentive and made the evening special for us. We enjoyed the Chai Feast (it's a must!) and ate so much food that we couldn't move after!
One of my favorite restaurants in Vancouver. Like a little oasis in the midst of all the hustle & bustle. The staff is always very nice, and the food has always been delicious. This was my first time trying the Chai Feast upon the recommendation of our waitress. Definitely the way to go as we got to try many different main dishes as they are sized so you can try a few without feeling stuffed by the end of the night lol. The lamb curry is fantastic! The wild salmon, seasonal fish, and chicken masala was also great. Both the Dahl soup, and mystic soup were delicious also.
Didn't get to stay for the live musical performances this time, but will definitely be coming back for that :)
Fabulous! Great meal!
The Chai Feast was perfect for our celebration! The service was phenomenal and the food absolutely outstanding.
East is east became my favourite restaurant in Vancouver after my first visit.
I love the variation of delicious food (there's so much to choose for vegans like me). I also find the atmosphere to be cozy, and the live music (at night) is always enjoyable and well worth the extra $3 (per person) added to one's dinner bill. I always have a wonderful experience at this restaurant. :)
The only thing that I don’t like is that the restaurant charges everyone $3 each for the music!!
I come there for the food not the music....
We had a great time at the restaurant. The food was marvelous and we really enjoyed the music and dancing. The volume of the music was really appropriate in terms of being able to enjoy it and still have conversation.
Outstanding dining experience
I've been dining at East is East for many many years and always have a good time! Food is amazing! Atmosphere is outstanding. I will be going back and back there for years to come!
Awesome and romantic
hi, we really enjoyed our dinner. We were seated quite close to the entertainment so it was difficult to have conversations, but no issues. Only issue I had was that the chair I was on was not level and I felt like I was going to slide off the chair throughout my meal.
Excellent service, fabulous, variety of healthy menu options. MusicIans are wonderdul & create a great ambiance, but the music can be too loud at times to carry on a regular conversation. Staff go above & beyond to create a memorable dining out wxperience.
Always a reliable ‘good food, great service, ‘ dining experience. The best Chai anywhere! As much as the entertainment adds a unique quality to the ambiance I find it distracting for conversation; hence I now book for early dining between 5-7.
One recommendation would be to start the entertainment later, around 830 for those of us who come for the food, ambiance & conversation.
Fantastic service, food is great, menu has a lot of options for many different tastes. Waitress really answered our questions about what we were ordering and had recommendations.
Enjoyed the Chai Feast - everything was delicious. The decor and atmosphere, along with live music made for a wonderful evening and overall dining experience. Loved it and will return.
One of my favorite fusion food restaurants that always has fresh ingredients and unique flavors
Never disappointed here, absolutely amazing food quality
Comfortable seating. A little tight and I'm not a very big person. But everything else was perfect.
We had an outstanding service.
The table we had reserved for was 30 min late, and in appreciation to our patience, the ladies provided us free drinks, free appetizers and free deserts. Super friendly staff.
It was very clear that they wanted us us to have a great experience in the restaurant as overall : food, atmosphere, awesome service etc.
It amazed me that even though the restaurant is big and was super busy, the our waitress always managed to check up on us. I had a guest from oversea, and was very pleased we went to East is East on Main Street.
Will be back again very soon!
Service here is absolutely horrible. We were seated at our table and waited 20 minutes without any attention. Asked two other servers to get our server but she never came so another server just ended up taking our order. We ordered more food in between with another server but waited for half an hour without our food. Our server asked if we still wanted to order any more food and we told her we have ordered but nothing came. Our sever went to check with the other servers but she never came back to tell us that no one ordered our food until we called her over to ask. When the bill came, we noticed that each person was charged $3 for entertainment. Nobody told us that we would be charged for the live performance. If you’re going to charge for live performance, that should be communicated so I can decide if I still want to dine there. I really didn’t have a choice but to bare with the circumstance.
Spectacular food, great service & amazing live music!
The soy Chai made in house is a must.
Great food and terrific service, always so accommodating. We enjoy the weekend performances. Something a little bit different. Highly recommended.
couldn't ask for more from a restaurant. I can still taste the delicious food and want to go back to get more.
It was delicious and a great evening except the seating is uncomfortable and the musicians are too loud. It was hard to hear the conversation.
Love the food, ambiance and service here. Exceptional value.
The stuffed bread is so yummy.
Wonderful flamenco. Great vibe!
We came here for our anniversary and were greeted with
chai and lemon water and a lovely greeting from the staff. Highly recommend!
The food and ambience is very good. Bonus for being able to order more with the Chai Feast. Surcharge of $3.00 per person is too expensive (to pay the musicians), but I will still return.
Absolutely amazing food
Good Service and Good Food
