Eating House 1849 - Kauai
at The Shops at Kukui"ula. Named after one of the first restaurants constructed in HawaI'I, by a Portuguese businessman named Peter Fernandez, Eating house plays homage to the popular casual eateries of the mid 19th century that incorporated a medley of flavors from the Island's growing and diverse communities.
Never fail restaurant!
Service is terrific from the moment you enter-The food is delish!
Appetizers ordered were brussel sprout/cauliflower & the potstickers- both mouth watering!
i ordered my standard ramen, hubby stuck with tried and true fried chicken and son had the ridiculously moist butterfish!
Add the gorgeous view and it's a 10!!!
Excellent food and service!
One thing f my favorite places anywhere
Food was good but all in all not as wonderful as we remembered from prior visits.
The steak was flavorful but slightly over cooked. The paella was nothing special. Too wet and tomato-ey for our taste.
The honey mustard short ribs were delicious and fall off the bone tender. The beef and boar burger was a hit.
The kids enjoyed their lava cakes but the flavor of the tiramisu was too far a leap from the classic.
Server and other staff were friendly and attentive. We were seated a few minutes after our reservation time.
Love coming here to celebrate special occasions with the family. Always great service and great food! Thank you thank you thank you!
It’s a birthday celebration and everything was excellent
Loved the pork ribs!!! Potstickers a bit bland. Very nice Salmon dish; lived the licked vegetables. Would have preferred brown rice.
Didn’t enjoy sitting so close to a rather loud gentleman. Would like to see tables a bit further apart.
Chocolate molten cake way too rich and sweet.
Great food. Rib appetizer was delicious. Main courses looked great and tasted even better.
Kept hearing from people how awesome this place was , so my husband and I finally went. We were not disappointed. Food and service was amazing. I will definitely recommend this place to others as well.
The service was excellent, views beautiful, and the food was delicious! The dessert was amazing!
Oh my gosh we had Mikey as our server and he was the SWEETEST BOY. A little slow but sweet 😏
The place was amazing! Great staff and service.
Our experience at Eating House was great! We go for our anniversary every year and it never disappoints. Mikey our server was amazing as always and so knowledgeable about the food. We loved all of our appetizers and our main course the butterfish bowl. We also got a bunch of desserts that could not have been better. Yum! We can’t wait for the next time with that beautiful view!
Horrible, horrible service. Mediocre food.
The staff was excellent and food was even better! The young girl bartender made great drink recommendations and made us feel at home right from the start! They made our 25th anniversary very special!
Celebrating our 34th Wedding Anniversary!
We have had dinner here a handful of times & we made a decision to only order items in which we had never had.... great choices made, all new to us, highly recommended to all!
Great food, great drinks, great drinks, and awesome views. Great place to enjoy life.
Disappointed with the cocktails (can’t taste the alcohol) and the food. Roy’s in HNL is a lot better. Service can be improved as well.
Great kid’s menu. They loved the fried chicken. Good mix on the menu with
We dined here to celebrate our honeymoon and had a fantastic meal. Service was excellent; our server made excellent recommendations. We loved the ahi tuna with soba noodles and the short ribs.
Went with my family and enjoyed every bit of our meal!! Appetizers were awesome!! Pot Stickers and calamari!!
Dinner was island style fried chicken and spicy ramen bowl!!
Can't miss going here when I'm visiting the beautiful island of Kauai. Started with the sizzled kamachi appetizer which was incredibly delicious followed by my favorite tavern fried chicken. Finished with a lovely decadent chocolate souffle. Service was great and I can't wait to return.
Wow what an amazing experience . Fab food with great decor . Had noodle bowl , hot rice bowl and Rueben
Server was wonderful beer was delish will go back when in Kauai again
Beautiful view of the ocean, sunset and hills of Kalaheo. Service is very good and the food is delicious and comes in a generous portions. Wine selection is okay but I'm a snob.
Pleasant experience, good service and large portions! The short ribs were very flavorful and tender.
Best dinner in Kauai! We have been to Kauai several times and have had many good dinners elsewhere, but the Eating House 1849 is a step above. The dishes are prepared with that extra creativity and respect for local, fresh ingredients and results in an outstanding experience. We had butterfish prepared over rice and bok choi in a shoyu glaze prepared in a cast iron skillet. Melt in your mouth with just enough complexity to enjoy every bite. For dessert we ordered the chocolate soufflé, which is prepared to order. Warm, oozy chocolate with vanilla ice cream, what more do I need to say? Our server was very warm and personable without being intrusive and we felt like guests in a home rather than customers being rushed through dinner. If you go, try to get a table along the back edge of the balcony to watch the sunset. Perfect!
We're on vacation in Kauai. And I have a gift card for the eating-house. And it exceeded our expectations. Every dish ordered by our table of four was delicious. Especially liked the hamburger which was actually beef and wild boar. And the chocolate souffle Would certainly recommend this restaurant to anyone visiting the island
A must if you are visiting kauai, best 180 bucks you will spend (for 4) on the island, service is top notch as well.
One of the best meals we’ve had in our lives. If you go all the way to Kauai and don’t eat here you’ve made a terrible mistake.
Wonderful food as always. Service has dropped way off, finished plates remain on the table far too long. Four guests in our area said the same thing last night. The flies are attracted to your table and the waiters just walk by. I’m sure it will be addressed. Otherwise it was excellent.
We came to Eating House 1849 to celebrate our 15th Anniversary and could not have been happier with the evening. The atmosphere -- particularly the sunset views from the restaurant -- was wonderful. The service was nicely paced; we were never rushed, but we also never felt ignored. Our server gave us some great recommendations for an appetizer and main course. The food was packed with flavor, but not overly heavy, which helped us keep room left for dessert. The paella was delicious, although I would say its flavor profile was more akin to a creole jambalaya. Still the seafood was cooked perfectly and everything was enjoyed.
Best burger I've ever had and I've had a lot of burgers. Service is exceptional. Views are magnificent. Food is better.
Cool very nice atomsphere!
We will come back!
We were huge fans of Roy’s Poipu. Figured we would give it a chance. Delightfully surprised. Unique menu, very differ t than what we expected, BUT that was a good thing. We ordered the calamari, paella, spicy ramen bowl, and shrimp pasta dish. All were excellent!! We also ordered the chocolate soufflé (which is always excellent-hold over from Roy’s), the malasadas and we were celebrating a birthday, so a complementary orange churro was bright to the table with a candle. No singing....thankfully 😊. We shared a bottle of the Roy’s Prosecco, which was a perfect addition to the food!!
Great meal overall. Highly recommended. Attentive waitress.
Food great, service poorer than usual, maybe an off night.
Told them it was our honeymoon and we got a seat right on railing overlooking the sunset. Food was outstanding. Get the ribeye it is tender and delicious.
Very good food, excellent service, nice relaxed but classy atmosphere (depending on where you sit). The restaurant is very large, situated on the second floor inside a Poipu mall -- a very swank mall -- with distant ocean views. We asked for a table with sunset views and were seated at a very nice table for two toward the back of the restaurant -- to my view a much preferred area. We were celebrating a special occasion and they treated us very well, with a small dessert and personalized greetings from the staff.
If you have a large party or are an unlucky small party you will be seated at the noisy front or directly facing the too-bright kitchen. Try in particular to avoid the latter.
Service was very, very good -- our server Rebecca was obviously experienced and skillful, and she helped guide us through the menu. Drinks were excellent. The kampachi sashimi appetizer was really delicious -- tender and tasty. Pot stickers app also was tasty. The cauliflower and brussel sprouts app was good, but not quite as good as I'd expected given prior reviews. Hot pot rice bowl with the butterfish, which online reviewers had highly recommended, was indeed very good -- fish was delicious -- although the hot pot wasn't heated up enough to caramelize the rice. That's a shame, given it cost $42.
All in all, we greatly enjoyed the meal and would return if we are in Kauai again.
This is one of my favorite restaurants of all time. The food and drinks are to die for and bursting with tons of flavor. This is a must-eat restaurant for anyone who travels to Kauai. Highly recommend it. You will not be disappointed. It is much better than any other restaurant on Kauai.
Amazing sunset views along the back of the restaurant. What an incredible food and drink experience!
Good and drink were fabulous. Restaurant and view are gorgeous. Service was meh. Not bad, just kind of flat. We’ll be back though!!
