Eating House 1849 - Kauai
at The Shops at Kukui"ula. Named after one of the first restaurants constructed in HawaI'I, by a Portuguese businessman named Peter Fernandez, Eating house plays homage to the popular casual eateries of the mid 19th century that incorporated a medley of flavors from the Island's growing and diverse communities.
Simply the best dining experience that we had on Kauai.
Delic. Just do it!
Phenomenal. The kale and cauliflower appetizer was outstanding. I loved the butter fish for dinner with the kale salad. For desert we shared the traditional chocolate soufflé and the peanut butter chocolate soufflé.
Great atmosphere. Ocean views from the back left side of the dining area.
Pork/Shrimp post stickers, amazing!
Fried chicken, amazing!
Slow cooked short ribs, amazing!
Chicken rice bowl, ok!
Mushroom soup, very strong flavors and thick, more like gravy. I would pass on this one. Every member of our group tasted it and commented that they would not want to eat the entire bowl, too thick and rich.
Overall, we would be happy to eat here again.
I will be back!
We asked for a table with a view and didn’t get one. Wife unhappy
Very expensive for very average food. 6 small pieces of tuna for $44 or shrimp pasta with 6 small shrimp for $34. This was our 3rd visit and probably our last. There are many other restaurants with better food and better service.
Our dining experience at Eating House 1849 was wonderful...the casual rustic-chic interior in a great outdoor mall was great! We requested to be seated on the back side overlooking the ocean and sunset and it was absolutely wonderful. The service was relaxed but attentive, and the seafood dishes we tried were really delicious (the brussels sprouts/cauliflower appetizer was awesome)!
The food was amazing, the ambiance was so relaxing, and the service was great. This restaurant is one of my family's favorites yet- not only in Hawaii, but ever.
Eating House 1849 is our favorite place not only in Kauai, but also including places back in the mainland. We love coming here.
It was so great. Had really great food was not my first or last time coming here!
We celebrated a birthday~were greeted warmly and given a great table. Must be a popular place to
We had such a fun night out at Eating House 1849! Great food - fun atmosphere!!
Bad service. We had a reservation and when we arrived 15 minutes early, we requested a table overlooking the ocean. They said 30 min wait and we said that was fine. After 30 min, we took a lap of the restaurant and saw a table had just been set overlooking the ocean. The hostess then sat a group that arrived after us and did not have a reservation there and proceeded to give us a table not on the ocean.
At the table, we asked our waitress for recommendations and she had few. It seemed that she did not know the menu at all and was simply stating what we could already read.
For the price, the dishes were mediocre at best. Had everything been slightly better in taste, or slightly cheaper, it would have been better.
We dined here for our honeymoon and said no to desserts. They then proceeded to give us complimentary orange churros and when we asked if we could get a different dessert instead, they said no...only churrros....which weren’t even close to good.
The saving grace of the restaurant was the ambiance, view, and the bartender that we sat with for 35min while waiting for our table.
Second time at 1849 and again the service was excellent from both our servers. While our meal the first time was fabulous this time there were a few lapses. We started with the tomato salad, the tomatoes didn’t have much flavor and were not at the perfect ripeness which you would expect ( or we did ) from this restaurant, the dressing was also missing some acid. The paella was very good, well cooked and a proportional amount of seafood. Our other dish the butterfish was hit and miss. While the butterfish was exceptional the rice was not, it could have benefited from being cooked in dashi, we found it lacking in flavor.
My husband and I came here for our last night in Kauai. Food was phenomenal and the service outstanding. Ask for Josiah, he was awesome! His recommendations made our experience five stars!
Richard was a great server! Great food and great views. Will definitely be back for another meal.
This is the place we have to visit when in Hawaii. We always went to Roy's when Roy's was the thing Now it's 1849. This visit we went 2X once for desert only and the second for the whole thing. The service was good but not great both times. The greeting was a little off - kind of felt as it was an inconvenience for them to seat us. The server was overwhelmed with tables. The food was very good (although the brownie was just ok). Just didnt feel as special this time and I cant put my finger on why. The views were great.
We were seated at a window table to enjoy the open air and beautiful sunset! Our 'dining experience' at Eating House 1849 was truly a treat - the entire team took care of us, answered questions, even took our picture. The food was fresh & fantastic! We shared: an appetizer, two different salads, one main dish AND the chocolate souffle for dessert. Thank you!
Food was superb and the wait staff was excellent. When I let them know I was gluten sensitive they made every effort to make sure I did not select any food containing glutens.
They were so good with the kid in our group, kept the drinks/water full, and checked on us often but without being annoying
The room was pleasant- open air and casual and quite busy! It was my birthday and the paper decoration on the table was a nice touch until the server swooped it away to make room for upcoming orders before we had ordered. We ordered a few pupus and the sizzling rib-eye was by far the best! We also shared a seafood entree that was flavorful and cooked perfectly. Our server was efficient, but not engaging. Overall a good experience that I have, and will continue to recommend to friends and family- especially the rib-eye app!
Great food, great views of sunset with eclectic food choices.
Selection of Menu items were poor! The Resturant is beautiful however the lighting attracts misquotes and bugs. Not a way you want to enjoy dinner!
Our waiter was excellent in describing the AHi because we don’t like the way it is prepared on your menu.
Our appetizers were delicious as well.
We return every year to Kaui and we hope that next year your menu will have more items that we will enjoy.
May be the best dining for local Hawaiian faire, combination of open space, great view, and casual atmosphere.
Fabulous date night!
We didn’t find the food as good as when we went to the old Roy’s. My wife thought her food was too salty. I had the rib eye which I thought was excellent. For dessert we had the chocolate soufflé. Roy’s was the first place we had it and we still have fond memories. This soufflé was as good, but for some reason they put a soft cookie laden with nuts under the scoop of ice cream without mentioning it on the menu. Unfortunately I hate nuts and it ruined the dessert.
My wife and I we excited about visiting your restaurant after seeing you ad in Kauai Traveler. My wife loves traditional Paella. She was so disappointed when she was served Portuguese Stew. She was expecting A bed toasted rice “socarrat, which is essential to a good paella. The stew was too heavy on the tomato flavor. The red snapper I had was excellent.
Variety of dishes expertly prepared and served in pleasant setting.
Another gem from Roy Yamaguchi. This place has a stunning sunset view, amazingly good service and of course... Roy's fantastic menu and always "not-the-typical" offerings. I had the Paella and it was delicious... not the same as Spanish Paella, but with a flair that only Roy could do. Highly recommend this place.
We love The Eating House. We 1st visited about 6-8 years ago and we always come back when we visit Kauai. This trip we ate there 3 times and it’s always awesome. The food is exceptional and service is excellent. We couldn’t ask for more.

We truly enjoyed our dinner at the Eating House. Every course was delicious: cream of mushroom soup, caesar salad, Szechuan ribs, bacon & sweet pea fried rice, and molten chocolate cake with Lappert's vanilla bean ice cream. The Lava Flow cocktail I had was hands-down the best tropical cocktail of my two-week vacation in Hawaii. The service was attentive, and the ambiance was all that one would wish for a final evening on Kauai. Can't wait to return!
My third time eating at Eating House 1849 was just as amazing as my first time! The service is top notch! The food is inventive and delicious!!! I enjoyed the wild boar burger yet again! I highly recommended Eating House1849
Wonderful food, wonderful service.
Great choices. Great helpful staff.
This is a super place to eat. Great views was a bonus.
A must to go back to.
First time we went. Had the braised short ribs and my wife had the shrimp gnocchi. Both were very good and we would order them again. Service was great and very friendly and helpful.
Everything was yummy! Would recommend the potstickers and tiramisu.
Mahalo Rebecca for making our post Mother’s Day and son’s birthday celebration very special.
We had been to different Roy's restaurants and always enjoyed our meals. So when we made plans to visit Kauai, we knew we had to make a reservation at Eating House 1849. We made the reservation on our first night, so we could be more casual for the rest of our dinner plans during our visit. During our short five0day visit to the island, we ended up going a total of three times. The food was just too good and the service is top notch. We will visit a Roy's establishment whenever we go to a locations that has one.
We both had the seared ahi with soba noodle salad and it was absolutely delicious.
Wonderful dinner. Food and service (Rebecca) was fabulous. The view of the sunset was perfect.
Next visit to Poipu we’ll be having dinner here again.
