El Catrin has grown to be one of the most popular restaurants in the City of Toronto by delivering on both traditional and modern Mexican cuisine in a fun, lively, well-serviced atmosphere in the Distillery Historic District.
Boasting a sharing-style menu and one of Canada's largest mescal and tequila menus, El Catrin offers a unique experience and an incredible atmosphere that is just plain fun. The El Catrin menu, created by one of Mexico City's top chefs, is designed so that you can taste a little bit of everything.
On the inside, the decor features a breathtaking mural that that took over 100 days to complete. On the outside, El Catrin boasts one of the best patios in the city that is not only enormous but open nearly year-round.
Food is great as always even though overpriced I don’t mind because of ambiance and quality of food. Our waiter was great however the staff at the front (outside ) were unapproachable and clearly exhausted also unwilling to help. We made reservations online didn’t know we couldn’t sit outside so still had to wait almost an hour until we went to check again and they said they’re ready for us! Good thing we checked. We had baja and shrimp tacos, margaritas and fresh guacamole . All delicious and would recommend. Outside seats were really uncomfortable though 🙈
Tiny portions of food leave a lot to be desired for those who are expecting a meal. Very overpriced but the locale and ambiance is nice. Eat before you go!!!
I love this place so much, the decor, the food, the service, everything. We came late on Saturday and I found it a bit loud, but we were on a date, so it would have been perfect for a group of friends that evening, maybe not for an intimate date! But we had a really nice time nonetheless! Thank you.
Spectacular decor made even nicer with the awesome service we got from Pamela. She was funny, attentive and made our dinner that much enjoyable!
Service was very attentive and personable, there was a group of 12 for a surprise birthday and it couldn’t have gone any smoother.
Thank you to the staff!
Unfortunately this was not my first time at El Catrin....however it will be my last.
The fish was burnt, and guacamole tasted great with the first bowl but when ordering a second guacamole it tasted terrible.
I was very disappointed in the food.
I would give every category five stars, except at the end, our bill was approximately $30 overcharged. This was easily and quickly solved by Ricardo, our excellent server, but I was disappointed that this happened.
El Catrin is always fun, and the food is totally delicious! They only take reservations for inside, so that's where we usually sit. The lineups for the patio can be super long.
Service was great. My friend and I enjoyed our time. Our server was wonderful as well, said she was fairly new but she was SUPER professional and friendly!
Our server was Vincent. He was a really cool server, had good recommendations, checked on us often. The restaurant is very nice look and ambiance, food was amazing. The food is tapas style but I wish they served some more familiar dishes, like Enchiladas and Elote, which could be served tapas style. Drinks were amazing, I had a mojito and shots of a tequila called real.
Busy place, make people feel like it's exclusive to get in, but ultimately not up to a big city standard for a foodie city. Best dish was nopalitos salad, good flavor and unique. Seemed either understaffed or disorganized. might be better for drinks and snacks than a full dinner.
One of the best Mexican foods that I’ve had in Toronto
It was a special Birthday get together with long time friends,... everything was great except the restaurant was very loud so made conversations hard to maintain.
Service excellent as was food,
Amazing!! Very beautiful! Great musics.
El Catrin is a fun experience. Food is excellent - very fresh and fabulous. Service is extremely helpful. Staff go out of their way to make everyone feel welcome. It's noisy inside though - but we enjoyed ourselves thoroughly.
Overpriced for what you get.
service was lacking as it appeared to be understaffed
Food not great
Ceviche was the best thing—- scallop ceviche for $14... was one single scallop slivered and served with a delicious marinade
Shrimp taco bland and creamy
Fish tacos are great
For a tapas style restaurant the portions are extremely small. There were 4 of us in our group. Although the food was great we barely had much to taste. Very disappointed, we drove al the way from Windsor, ON to taste the authentic style of food. We ended up leaving feeling very hungry.
Good food but overpriced. Passing off Budweiser and El Catrin’s house lager is BS.
This was my second time visiting El Catrin. I just love the ambience and the music. I ordered the Baja (fish Tacos) I had it for the first time about a couple of weeks ago and shared with a friend however, the last time it was extremely oily. I could barely finish the second one so I ended up leaving it on the plate. I wish they would find a different method of frying the fish because the oil completely turned me off. Drinks- I had the Mayan. It was okay but a little bit on the pricey side $15.00. My partner had the POLLITO BORRACHO and didn’t enjoy it. It seemed like less than a quarter of chicken and really didn’t taste all the good. Small portion sizes so be prepared for the. You can add an extra taco for I believe $6.00. We skipped dessert because we felt sick because of all the oil made the prepare the food.
The ambience is the best thing about this restaurant. Beautiful pictures and quite an experience. Try it once for yourself.
I’m a huge fan of El Catrin. The food is spectacular and the cocktails are to die for. I’ll be back to try out the patio.
Cheery establishment. Good food and drink. Small plates a big plus. Definite must visit place in the distillery.
would have preferred to get on patio- not sure why there is not reservations option for this
I used to love this place but it’s gone down hill. You cannot mix and match tacos (yes, you HAVE to order two of the same) with each order. What kind of Mexican taco place does that? Super lame. Service was slow. They ding you for ‘extra chips’ when ordering guac. There are much better spots in Toronto. Go to La Carnita if you want tacos and beer.
Wonderful meal and outstanding service!
Our server messed up on a lot of things. It started off by the server telling us you can't order just one taco after ordering two tacos previously (this is a terrible rule)...therefore I told him I will just do something on the dessert menu. When it came around to dessert, I pointed and asked him if the tres leche or the churros were better and apparently he recommended something completely different on the menu that had the word tres leche. I told him that I will do the tres leche. When the wrong dessert came out and I explained to him that I ordered the tres leche, he blamed me for not listening to him talking about rice is a dessert. I explained to him that I ask about two desserts and did not understand why he would go recommend something else and the largest dessert on the menu after I explained to him that I didn't want to order two tacos because I wasn't that hungry. The way the server acted in this situation was terrible. I have been a server for 10 years and something that this person needs to understand is that people work very hard for their money and when they go out for a nice dinner, your main job is to provide good customer service.
Music far too loud and was targeted obviously to 20 yr old. There were no 20 yr olds in the restaurant at that time. How about targeting the music for the people who were in the restaurant?
Music did not suit the Mexican theme of the restaurant and it was difficult to have a conversation as you could not hear the people speak Our reservation was at 1 pm.
Waitress- not friendly or welcoming, did not smile until we paid our bill.
portions are small, food was tasty.
outside patio, barely any shade- use umbrellas or plants on the top of your pergola structure
how about skipping the straws
need more gluten free and vegetarian/vegan options
beautiful ambiance and amazing music. The food was amazing and we were impressed with the service.
Our server Jessica took the time to explain the various dishes on the menu.
Tacos & quesadilla were delicious! Great girls night get together
Fun atmosphere especially on the beautiful patio. But the food and drinks are very very overpriced. It ends up being very expensive for not a lot of food. It is pretty touristy.
Amazing food! We were glad we sat inside as the outside area doesn't quite do it justice. Would defo go back if I visited Toronto again!
I have no problem with the quality of food, as long as you stay away from the kids menu. The problem that I still cannot get over is the price you will spend for everything. You will be charged at a premium for anything that you want. You are even told that all the dished are small and are expected to order multiple dishes. The problem is that each dish at a minimum is $12 and a beer is almost the same price. If you are not hungry and don't mind spending money on good quality food than you will not be disappointed.
Love this place. Great experience overall. Just found a waiter a little overwhelmed or distracted, making the experience a little longer than we'd hoped.
We were celebrating two birthdays and had a fabulous time! Vince was our Server and he was just excellent. We started with the house made guacamole, made at the table, and Mayan Margaritas, both a fantastic start to the meal. We shared multiple dishes, all terrific. And you can’t skip the Churros with three sauces, coupled with free Tequila shots! The only drawback to El Catrin is the noise level — everyone is having a great time!
Food portions were very small and overpriced. Ambiance was great. The looks of the restaurant are amazing.
Best Mexican restaurant in town
Always recommend eating here. Excellent service. Beautiful decor. Amazing food.
Favourite drink is their mojito and the pollo loco tacos are my go to order.
Wanted to spend the day at the Distillery District and grab lunch. Been here before. The food is still great. Could better train the servers on the food and price point seems a bit high even for the area. $14.75 for a guacamole and chips starter and $13.50 for a mojito is a bit much.
Love the food and atmosphere here - never disappoints.
