El Hefe - Chicago
Are you more concerned with the beverage? El Hefe has some of the best Margaritas we’ve ever sipped. Grab one – or a beer-garita, frozen marg, beer, boxed wine (seriously!) – the list goes on and on!
How do you say “Cheers” in Spanish? At El Hefe we have earned it!
3 of 6 food orders were wrong
Food was great! Nachos were unbelievable. Unfortunately though, our service was very much sub par. We had a group of 6 so it was our prior understanding that tip would be included, which is completely understandable. The problem we had with this is that our server came by our table MAYBE twice throughout our entire meal. We were expecting to drink more but were unable to get her attention. We were one of three tables and felt we were put on the back burner because our 22% tip would be included regardless. We didn’t feel the 2 trips to our table warranted the $48 tip or a $5 “tech fee” even when you are paying cash.
Everyone thought the food was great, I will continue to tell others the food is worth the price but unfortunately the food is not worth the service. We will not be returning based on the standoff service we received.
We went for lunch and happened to be Taco Tuesday. Great deals and the food was fresh and delicious. Highly recommend if you work in the area.
Great tacos, good and fun environment!
I made my reservation for a party of 8 online for brunch. I went in for it and the young lady informed me that there was no longer brunch service, although a brunch menu is listed on the website. Brunch was also being promoted on the back of the lunch menu. If brunch is no longer being served, please remove it from the website and the menu. It is very misleading to guests.
This place is dirty. Bathroom is a mess soap dispensers don’t work. Floor is sticky. I hope the kitchen is clean, but have my doubts. But of all of that the WORST thing is they charge a 3% tech fee on everything! What is a tech fee? Not really sure. We were going to pay cash so we didn’t have to pay a tech fee.....not true all bills just come with a tech fee already added. JUST CHARGE MORE, don’t trick your customers. I will never go back!
Food was good. I really enjoyed the tacos, but it was the worst service I’ve ever experienced. Our waitress was straight up rude, and didn’t check on us at all. The restaurant was fairly empty when we were there and we watched her hang out and chat at the bar all night. I live in the neighborhood and definitely will not be back. Ive heard from friends that this restaurant wasn’t worth going to, but wanted to give it a try. My recommendations to other will be the same as my friends: don’t go to El Hefe.
A group of 9 of us went to el hefe for my birthday. Our service was pretty quick, the food was excellent and authentic. If you like spice, I highly suggest the street corn!
We thoroughly enjoyed the food & lively atmosphere. However, it’s a bit loud for conversation & not kid friendly.
Good Tacos, small portions, and definitely and bar/club scene.
Food was really good, service was OK. I did not appreciate the surprise "tech fee" that was added to the check without my knowledge.
The food and service were top notch. Price was great for Chicago , in the middle of it all. Nice to make a reservation and know we had a table! We will return!
It was good!:)
Had a total group of 6 and everyone enjoyed the food. It was pretty loud, and we sat at a weird booth that had us all sitting on the same side, so it was difficult to talk to each other. Seemed like the main focus of the place was the TVs. Would go back with just 2 or 3 people so we could actually talk. Service was great and the food was delicious (my husband and I each got 3 different tacos and loved all of them).
Foot at El Hefe was excellent. I would highly recommend visiting this restaurant. The Guacamole was wonderful. I had the grilled chicken fajita's and they were delicious! We were with a group of 6 people and everyone was very satisfied with their meals. It was Excellent! Waitress could have slowed down a bit and paid more attention to us - she was so quick to run and get our appetizers and meals that she really didn't listen well and follow through. Also, tables where the tip is already added, should be informed.
A find. Relaxed and fun, informal restaurant with excellent food and energetic service.
Terrible experience this weekend and won't be back. Waitress was rude and not attentive to our table at all. She never made eye contact and was very hard to communicate with. It took two hours to have two friends and have dinner.
A group of adults came in, very clearly intoxicated, and sat in a booth near us. Members of their group began to make out with each other at the table which was not what I expected out of a Friday evening dinner. One woman climbed over the booth to others to try to kiss other people at the restaurant. Everyone was watching them and the staff did nothing to stop any of it. Disgusting.
The food was excellent. We had the tres tacos and the steak nachos. The steak was cooked perfectly. My only gripe is our server. It was not overly busy, but she was not attentive at all. I had to flag her down multiple times to get refills. After we finished eating someone cleared our dishes. We were going to order dessert, but after waiting 20 minutes for our server to even come near our table, we were over it and just asked for the check.
Great food and great service and quick food delivery
Stopped by while in Chicago for a conference. I am and MSU alumni and came for a Saturday MSU game. Couldn't have been happier. Great table, great service, amazing food, great environment and lots of Green and White! We had a blast. Also - loved the live DJ during commercial breaks. What a cool idea!
Great food and service.
We made a reservation and asked about a specific football game to watch. They lied to us and told us they would change the channel so we could watch the game we wanted then kept us waiting for 15 minutes and finally told us they wouldn't change the channel. Wasted a lot of our time when they could have honestly responded to our comments on Open Table.
Nachos and tacos at el hefe were fantastic! Went for dinner on a Friday night. The atmosphere was lively and very, very loud.
Great tacos and salsa
Birthday party for a 1 year old. Too loud but didn’t know that going in. Food great and server even better!
Fish tacos were really delicious, tangy, spicy and built with ingenuity. Breakfast burrito first class. We had a very tasty and satisfying brunch, many thanks to the sweet servers.
The food menu was rather brief. I would say this is a good place to stop in for a drink and appetizers if you happen to be in downtown Chicago. I was not impressed with the food.
I come here often with friends for their food and drinks and it gets really fun at night. This time, however, I had a disappointing experience.
I came for the happy hour with a group and it took a while just for a someone to come out to us with water. Finally someone came to take our order and they were out of the corona for the beergarita so we all got regular margaritas which I highly recommend.
The quesadillas are usually good and are advertised to come with salsa roja and a lime crema (like a sour cream). One was supposed to be vegetarian and one with chicken and no sour cream. They mixed up our order and did the opposite but later brought out my sour creme separately.
Today I looked at my receipt... to my disappointment I was charged an extra $4 for chicken on a $4 quesadilla when it was advertised as 2 Extra. Charged an extra $1 for my sour cream when it was their mistake for not including it on one and putting it on the other when it is advertised to include both salsa and sour cream...
To top it all off... the taco price on the menu is changed by hand so you can’t even read it which looks really bad. Happy hour also says all tacos are $3 but when I asked she said it was only one select taco (not vegetarian).
Bottom line is I am fine with paying more if I’m being told about it beforehand. I don’t like feeling like I’m being tricked so the restaurant can make a few extra bucks off each person... that’s just unethical. Please get it together.
I always come here at nighttime, but I decided to come for brunch with my sister. We had a great time! The carne asada fries were amazing as usual. The energizer mimosa was a really great deal for brunch. I will definitely be back!
Spectacular and subtle flavor on the tacos. Good bang for buck. Decor is a little bit "sorority girl has a Dia de los Muertes party" but if that is ok with you it's a wonderful experience. Funky and comfortable.
Food was great, service was great!! loved it all was a little pricey but worth it!
The food isn’t super authentic but portions were generous. Service was a bit slow and inattentive, we didn’t get forks and plates until after our food came and we waved a waitress down to ask for it. We also were seated for what felt like quite a bit of time before anyone approached us with water or a greeting.
Amazing food and atmosphere
Server was constantly walking away from us when we were trying to order food. Over charged us about 100 dollars. Other than that we still had fun there and will go back to give it a second shot.
A group of us attending a convention in town. Friendly service, nice atmosphere, great food
Had a great time! Staff was great, drinks a must! Go to happy hour!
Excellent margaritas. The Mexican chicken soup was very good and so were the shrimp tacos. A very hopping place with a good vibe.
It was good. But very loud.
It was great! But Super loud
Enjoyed the happy hour choices: shrimp tacos, quesadillas with chicken, cheese dip with chips were delicious. I had the marguerita which was very generous size but not much tequila. The black beans and rice were tasty.
