We enjoy afternoon and high teas (been to Banff, Lake Louise, Calgary and Victoria) so we were looking forward to this one to celebrate my husband’s birthday! It looked promising with all of the right things set on the table, but sadly everything was just okay. It was a lovely day and we had a nice view, but service felt indifferent and we definitely knew when we were wanted out for the next seating. Our section had three tables close enough to notice that one table received more attention than ours and the other one. The food was pretty and fresh but nothing stood out as wow except the raisin scone. Now it might sound like we are being picky and pretentious…but we’ve had better teas for much less than we paid today. A 4-Star luxury hotel should provide exemplary service to all paying guests and customers. Too bad.

The food was delicious and the service was inviting. It was a memorable evening to celebrate our anniversary. We walked through the Fairmont gardens and took in the view of the river valley after.

The hotel has loads of history and the harvest room was pleasant. The service started with one of our party requesting a coffee, and the servers response should have been, I can do that for you, how would you like it, we do have some nice teas on offer if you’d like to try. Not, you can get a coffee anywhere, this is a high tea, but I can get it for you. The food on offer was really lovely and tasty, we would have liked more savoury options if on offer. When asked for another pot of water, this was filled to the brim, and when poured luckily only spilt on the table and carpet, it would have scolded badly. There was a baby continuing to cry in the room too, not that the hotel really could ask them to leave, but it was frustrating. In the end after we had paid, the server proceeded to advise that gratuities were not included. Overall our party of 3 had an ok time, not the best high tea we have experienced.

Having a high tea at the historic Hotel MacDonald is an experience not be missed. The architecture of the hotel is splendid. The service was superb and the presentation of the food was elegant. Yes it was more expensive but totally worth it! We really enjoyed ourselves.
