About this restaurant

  • Neighbourhood gem
  • Good for special occasions
  • Good for business meals
Hayes Street Grill is a neo-traditional fish house in San Francisco's Civic Center district, across the street from the Performing Arts Center, opposite Davies Symphony Hall and a block from both the Opera House and City Hall. We use an international mix of recipes, unified with a theme of fish and seafood. Above every other consideration, we want the freshness and pristine quality of the fish, produce, and naturally-raised meats to speak for themselves.

The Hayes Street Grill's walls are covered with autographed photos of the artists who consider the restaurant their club. Though we've remodeled since our opening 33 years ago, the original brass coat hooks along the walls remain, as does our founding philosophy of cooking only the food we would serve at home to our families, albeit dressed up a little, with a religious dedication to wholesomeness.

The food is always great, fresh and exactly what you want to eat. In my case the super fresh asparagus, warm and lemony with fabulous olive oil and Parmesan cheese. The oysters and French fries superb! The service was efficient and friendly as always.

Food was great. Tables were arranged very close to each other and it was quite noisy.

Fish and salads were excellent. The vegetable and desert selection was OK, but not as good as they previously offered. Overall, rather expensive.

The black cod with Japanese salad was delicious I always like that there are a variety of tasty, fresh dishes to choose from.

I have been dining at HAYES Street Grill for decades, usually for lunch, so in this trip back to SF it was wonderful to see little has changed, and its as excellent as ever.

Since Hayes Street Grill is a favorite and an institution, I'll may go back, although it won't be my first choice. Three of us were seated at a table for two which is not ideal and with competent wait staff could have been acceptable. However the food was not coursed and with the giant plates they use, it was crowded. The waiter just handed us the plates like "you figure out where to put this..." The surely waiter then brought the main courses with the salad, no share plates for the salad "just eat off the same plate.." and when I said I was not happy with the service he replied "Sorry I'm busy..." for a meal close to $100 a person, that's unacceptable. I foolishly left a 20% tip as i know everyone needs to earn a living, but the wait staff pretty much ruined the dining experience. And no offer for a complementary dessert or any hint of "making it right."
