In a world filled with "Plastic Paddy" establishments, the Heather stands out as a beacon of authenticity. An Irish House that is owned by Irish people who actually work there...how refreshing!!
Sunday - Thursday: CLOSE 11:30pm
Friday - Saturday: CLOSE 1:30am
You can park on the street (the meters run till 10:00, 7 nights a week), or at the EasyPark on Water St. - it's a secure, patrolled lot with 600 spaces, just half a block away from our door.
If you're not familiar with Gastown (or if you're a visitor to Vancouver), you can get directions to our location from Google Maps.
Taxis: Pick up and drop off right at our front door.
We are located a short distance from Waterfront Station. After exiting the station, turn left and walk down Water Street.
We are very near to the intersection of Alexander, Carrall, and Water streets.
Ait ana-mhaith - bia, ol, ceol agus craic. Nil gearant agam.
Took my fiancé here as a surprise date. Ever hear a grown man squee when he sees the whiskey list? I have. That was worth the trip alone. Oh and the food and drinks were awesome too. Will be back!
Awesome as always! Friendly staff! Irish pub, where the staff are actually from Ireland!
Bring back the scotch egg!!!!!
Went for my Birthday with my family. Food was fantastic and I had a whisky I had never had before. Staff was knowledgeable and it is great to hear Irish accents.
Only complaint I had was our table. Tucked away in the corner behind a wall. We couldn't see the bar - only the doors to the washrooms. I should have asked to be moved.
I'll be back though - cause I love the "Heather".
Slow service. Took forever for appetizer. Main was faster. Need more staff
What ever you do don't order off of the backside of the menu, especially if you didn't have lunch. It's like ok, you know when you're super poor and you eat crackers, cheese and lunch meat? It's like that. Don't do it!
Great whisky list and excellent cocktails but the food was awful. Would go back for a drink but go elsewhere for food. We had the curry fries, veggie burger, and lobster Mac and cheese.
Went to IH due to reviews on Open Table. I wonder if my service was based on the fact that I was a single, retired guy. Meal started out fine. Waitress was attentive, salad was well made. Beer and Beef pie was really only beer and beef. No vegetables. Great mashed potatoes. I expected more variety in the pie. At that time my waitress was off shift. I was then lost among only 3 other tables. No one came and asked if my meal was good. I had to go to the bar to get a second beer. I had to go back to the bar to get my bill. If they had been busy I could say they had an excuse. They seemed to have a nice bar. I would have rated the place higher if service had been normal. They seemed to be having a separate event because there were a lot of people passing thru the bar. Maybe that was distracting management or wait staff from their work.
Our server was a fantastic girl from Ireland, she was charming and lively. Our bartender was Irish as well, and poured an excellent pint of Guinness.
Love the fact that there are no screens up everwhere, music was at a volume you could still speak over. Oh an they have authentic Tayto crisps. Regrets? Only that I hadn't discovered how magical this place was before now. A real treat, especially if you have been to a real Irish pub before, and know the truth.
From the GIANT scotch and whiskey menu, to the unique pairings of food (e.g., the mac n cheese sandwich with kimchi... yum!), to the friendly service, this place is a win-win!! We would definitely return:)
Great service and fun time. Irish gem in Vancouver!
One problem we encountered was with the reservation system. We found it almost impossible to contact a human being to make a change or to get direct answers to simple questions. In the end, we did not really need a reservation as the restaurant was only about 3/4 full when we arrived. After we were seated, the food and service were fine.
We waited at the front door for about five minutes and nobody helped us. We had to track down an employee at the end of the bar just to get seated at our reserved table. Otherwise, great wait staff and food.
Not a bad little gem, Great Service!!. Good for an intimate setting with close friends.
typical pub food, I would come back. In fact, I will be back.
I have been here a couple of times before and while nothing was bad enough for me to single out nothing was great either.
This last time though left a really bad taste in our mouths. I reserved a table on Open Table, called an hour and a half before we arrived to add another guest to our reservation and the person over the phone told me that it was fine and they'd noted it in their system.
After arriving, the person seating us (same person as on the phone) told us there was no reservation under my name.
I told him that I'd made the reservation on Open Table and have the confirmation, to which he said was unreliable and proceeded to scald me for not calling to confirm my reservation.
When I told him that I had called less than two hours ago and spoken directly to him, he grumbled about not remembering every phone call and trying to find a spot for us.
First he tried to sit three of us at a two seat table.
When we said that was unacceptable we were ushered into the Shebeen Bar in the back where got a table. Fine.
Service for our meal was fine. The server (an Irish gentleman) was great, attentive, accommodating and funny despite the stress of the bar having eftpos issues.
He disappeared and we were attended to by a younger waitress who promptly forgot about us and we waited more than half an hour for our bill after we asked for it.
Service (with the exception of the Irish gentleman in Shebeen) is always like they're seeing to your needs over their dead body.
They have a decent selection of whisky but the service of their staff really lets them down.
Great whisky selection and friendly staff, although seemed a little under staffed resulting in longer than expected waits.
I went on St. Paddy's Day, so I expected it to be busy, but I didn't expect to have to wait 20-30 minutes to be seated at the table I reserved and only given a table for 2 when our reso was for 6. Also, they ran out of the pot pie and subbed a soup/stew instead which we had to eat with forks. The beer took 30 mins and arrived kind of warm. I'm sure it was related to the craziness of the holiday, but I feel the management could have been a bit better.
Excellent upscale pub food with an extensive list of whisky and whiskey. A must for anyone who wants to expand their whisk(e)y drinking experience.
Seemed noisy on a Friday night but probably just because I am old.
Love the chilled vibe. Great place to have a pint
Love the ambiance and aesthetic here. Older crowd and a bit loud. The whiskey selection is intense. It's overall a really good choice. Always busy and enjoyable.
Absolutely loved this spot; a real jem! Food is amazing and the service is second to none.
We were first-timers to Vancouver BC and were delighted with GasTown and Irish Heather. The staff were great and the food was delicious!
It will not disappoint any one. There are beer, wine, cocktail, whiskey and more. We were sent to the long table in the next room and it was actually nice and quiet enough to have a conversation without yelling at each other.
We had a very good meal here. I would definitely go more for the drinking than the eating, but we enjoyed the food. The steak and ale pot pie was very good and quite large. The menu is a little small (I think about 6 entree selections), but the drink menu is very extensive.
They have amazing veggie pot pies.
Great to see some GF beers on the menu, but they need to work on adding more GF menu items to their existing menu.
Loved the Vegan pot pie. Good selection of beers. My new favourite spot in the Gastown area.
I have been a patron of the Irish Heather for many years. However, I have moved from Vancouver it has been a number of years since I visited and was very disappointed to find the Heather had moved location! You are not the same! Sorry.
Loved the service, waitress was friendly and attentive without being over bearing. We were there during dinner hours and I found the noise level acceptable, we were still able to carry on a conversation! I'm a little picky about my guinness and found the stout to be fresh and the pours were traditionally perfect irish pours. I had the Guinness Steak Pie, the pastry and gravy were great however I found that the meat was mostly just fat which turned me off a little. My date had the bangers and mash and said it was fantastic. All in all, an enjoyable evening, my only recommendation would be to use some nicer cuts of meat in the pie.
I think we ordered the wrong thing. Who goes to an Irish restaurant and orders a steak??? We should have asked what is most popular. I think that was our fault. The steak wasn't very yummy. It tasted kind of burned but was all pink inside. We had ordered medium. It is obviously a very good restaurant, it was packed on a Sunday evening where most of the other restaurants around it were half empty.
Out of a party of four two people were happy with their meals and two of us were not. The one standout, and not in a good way, was the Vegan Pot Pie which was inedible. I have dined at the Irish Heather off and on for many years and I can honestly say that the food was better earlier on in their business, before the move to their current location, than that which I experienced last week. The Irish Heather is still a good place for a pint and some atmosphere but I won't be visiting again for a meal.
Tried the vegan pie and mashed potatoes. PIie was ok, rather dry so could be improved drastically with a vegetable gravy on the side. Even though I ordered vegan pie server brought side of meat gravy. It was only when I questioned gravy that server realized .
Very good! Would have like Whiskey pairing with the food :)
Good food and pleasant service. However, apparently making a reservation for the Irish Heather doesn't mean that you'll have a spot reserved in the Irish Heather.
When we arrived the hostess greeted us and led us through the Irish Heather to the back of the room, took a right past the washrooms and through another door which led to the Salty Tongue. It was here that she asked us to sit at that establishment's long table. I explained that there must be a misunderstanding since I had reserved for the Irish Heather. "This is the Irish Heather!" she responded.
Um, no it is not.
We went back to the bar, thankfully found four bar stools and perched against the wall. Not the best start to the evening, but at least there were seats for us
Beverage menu great. Whiskey flights a great idea. Food was pretty good. Appies better than main course. Would head back for drinks and apps.
The food was amazing! The staff was friendly and the snakebite was a dangerously delicious drink! It was a perfect place to start off our girls night out! I would go back again for sure!
The scotch list was amazing. It had a great selection of scotches at a reasonable price too. Their "mixed beer" list was pretty good as well that showcased a bunch of mixed beer drinks I haven't seen since I was younger. The only downside was the food menu wasn't as extensive as I thought it could've been. Being an Irish pub, it did have your standard fare such as Steak & Guiness Pie and Bangers & Mash, but I was surprised they didn't carry Shepherd's Pie. Overall, a good time was had by all in our group.
We were looking for an Irish Pub that had a good menu and we found it Couple that with a terrific server and we had a very enjoyable evening. We would definitely go back.
I thought the Irish Heather was okay. I ordered the fish & chips and it would have been tastier had it been warmer; unfortunately it arrived lukewarm. However, the batter of the fish was flavourful and crisp. My friend ordered the pasta special, a gnocci, but the texture was strange. They had a good selection of beers on tap, and I had an Orchard Hill Cider which they had on tap for quite a reasonable price. Our server was attentive and had no problem splitting the bill for our party. I can't say the experience was bad, but it wasn't overly exciting either.
