Our Restaurant Week lunches were delicious. The salad was fresh and nicely plated. The main course was fabulous - salmon and sirloin. The dessert berries were delicious with flavor and freshness. Definitely we felt the atmosphere was conducive for friendly conversation since the noise level was very low. Gilbert's is always our choice for a nice lunch out.
ordered the Restaurant Week meal with
crab bisque - surprisingly small portion but good taste
asparagus - 4 small spears, very undercooked/raw crunchy (the hardest asparagus i've had at a restaurant) - disappointing
12 ounce KANSAS CITY STRIP - poor quality, tough, difficult to cut, grisly
chocolate mousse cake - very good
i would not recommend this meal
Went to the restaurant for the Restaurant Week, which was advertised to offer a three-course lunch menu for $25, only to find out they canceled the lunch offer on the day of my reservation after we were seated.
Always a pleasure to have dinner here. It’s a classic, neighborhood steak joint. Food is always good. Service was a bit slower than usual, but always nice. Restaurant Week had some fun choices in the menus — smaller portions with some shrimp. It was super a super bargain with the prix fixe menu.
The food is excellent. I prefer to sit within the Main dining area where there are fireplaces, very cozy. Overall, a romantic setting and appeal for a fine dining experience. Great place to entertain or have date night!
Had an enjoyable dinner with family at J Gilbert’s! This was beginning of Restaurant Week and they were very busy but in spoof that, our server took time to give us attention and great service. Food and drinks were excellent too.
Food, service, timeless steakhouse atmosphere, and cocktails were all excellent as always.
Great dining experience during restaurant week! The fixed menu offered a variety of selections and the three course meal was reasonably priced for the big portion sizes. Service was fast and steak was cooked perfectly. The only criticisms I have were that the restaurant is dimly lit and that there was no space to hang our coats since we were seated in a booth. Other than that, it was lovely spot to celebrate a special occasion.
The steaks are amazing. Ask for a waiter named Hugo. He's the BEST!!
Food was great, service on the other hand another story, when we first sat down our waitress was very attentive after it started to get busy basically forgotten about, unfortunately Kaila our waitress had to be flagged down every time we were in need of something.
Everything from the wedge salad to the BBQ ribs and Penne pasta to the 7 layer coconut cake were absolutely delicious! It was a great lunch atmosphere on a cold Saturday !
Had a great time…good food and great service
Outstanding . Food and service was soo good
We made a reservation two days before and when we got there, they sent us to a horrible table in the back of the restaurant. The place was really cold and not nice at all.
Lamb rack & steak were cooked really well. Server was Austin and was very pleasant & attentive throughout the whole dinner. Will definitely be coming back!
Crème brûlée was so creamy & delicious! Not overly sweet at all.
Wonderful night out at J. Gilbert’s- everything from the greeters to the food and service were excellent!!
Many kudos due to Hugo our server - the man is a jewel - competent, friendly and funny. We only wish there were more like him.
Excellent service and great tasting food.
Two of us had Caesar salad, a steak and dessert. Everything was great and the service was attentive without being intrusive. Been there before? Yes. Going to go again? Oh yes!
Service was excellent. We participated in the restaurant week menu. Steak and lobster were first rate. Crab bisque was also great. Vegetable sides were weaker - too buttery. I would probably get a salad next time. Dessert was wonderful as was the wine recommendation. Our waiter was phenomenal. We have hardly gone out during COVID and beforehand I was nervous about eating here, but once we got there I felt so comfortable. The waitstaff all wore masks and we felt sufficiently spaced from other parties in our booth. I will definitely be back soon.
Always a delicious meal. Love the warm bread. Salmon, filet and mushroom risotto!!
Great food and service. Restaurant week for lunch is fantastic.
The food never comes out all together. My ribs were not that good but the green beans were excellent.
The steak was undercooked and chewy. The waiter didn’t offer to take it back for further cooking. Also restaurant week was for 25$ and was charged for 30$ due to tiny almost unreadable 5$ additional when the rib dish and steak dish were ordered. Deceiving and not transparent. Waiter should inform the additional 5$ when ordering above dishes
We had the restaurant week special. The salmon was the best I ever have had. Our Waiter was phenomenal.
We went to J. Gilbert’s one evening during Restaurant week. There was a fixed price menu and a fixed price Restaurant Week menu. We selected from the Restaurant Week menu. The food was very good and the service was efficient. When the check arrived, we were surprised there was a surcharge of $8 added to each of the lobster tail entrees. Even though it was in small print on the menu there was an $8 surcharge, it was easy to overlook the fine print on the menu. It just felt deceptive to have a fixed price menu with a variety of entree options but then discover for lack of seeing the fine print that an entree option on this menu had a surcharge and was not, in fact, $55 fixed price after all.
Our server was exceptional! Young woman. I believe her name began with a K and she doesn’t like chocolate.
Almost flawless. Restaurant Week menu offered plenty of options, and we were pleased with our choices —steak frites for the guys, with a potato soup starter, and salmon for me with a wedge salad starter. The salmon was delicious with a mild wood-fired smoky flavor, and came with a nice lobster risotto and asparagus, all done to perfection. Every entree had suggested wine pairings, and I enjoyed the recommended sauvignon blanc. The steaks were done exactly as ordered. For dessert, I had the mixed berries in creme anglaise, my husband had the carrot cake, and our son had the creme brulee - which was light, and the best he’s had. Service was perfect. Attentive without being intrusive. So why do I say *almost* flawless? The kitchen had a heavy hand with the dressing on the wedge salad. Better to dress it lightly and offer extra dressing on the side IMHO. Overall, happy we tried this venerable institution and look forward to returning!
Great birthday dinner for my wife tonight. Even with the inclement weather, the cooks and the staff made it a very special evening for my family. Awesome menu and fantastic food. Thank you.
Excellent food and service.
Very happy with our visit
Keeping in mind that everyone is dealing with reduced staff these days, our server was great, except when we were ready to leave. It took quite a while to get our check.
Great dining experience, food and customer service per usual. I highly recommend J. Gilbert’s for your dining needs.
The food, the staff, and the ambiance is always excellent.
This has always been on my list of favorites, but I hadn't been in McLean/Tysons for dinner in quite a while. So coming back to J Gilbert after a several-year gap, I wasn't sure what to expect. As it turns out, the ambience, the bartenders, and the servers are a good as always. The food turned out to be even better than I remember it. My guest and I ordered from the Prix Fixe menu, so we each had the crab soup, filet mignon with seafood, and dessert. The soup was smooth and flavorful, with just enough crab. The filet literally melted in my mouth - one of the most flavorful steaks I have ever had. The seafood (crab cake for me, shrimp for my guest) was properly prepared. The crabcake, in particular, was all crab. I don't know how it was bound together, because I didn't see any filler. Creamed corn and asparagus completed the entree. Dessert was delicious. Highly recommend this restaurant.
J Gilberts is a consistent, neighborhood favorite. Good food at a fair price served by a largely professional staff. Many have been there for years. Always dependable.
As usual, the food was delicious. The waiter was quite pleasant and the drinks we spectacular. Been enjoying them for about 17 years now. Perfect for a special occasion or just romantic night out.
Great steaks, great service.
Dinner was great and our waiter was fabulous Sorry can't remember his name, but I do remember him saying he was from Morocco.
The Food, Service and Ambience were good. But they shorted me on the dessert that was part of the 3-course meal. :-/
Everything was great except I made a note in OpenTable regarding my husband's birthday and to bring out a cake with candle at the end which did not happen
