Jazz Standard

4.1
4.1
263 Reviews
$31 to $50
Barbecue
One-part thrilling jazz club and one-part delicious restaurant, Jazz Standard serves southern inspired fare crafted by chef Jean-Paul Bourgeois. Sensational starters, such as the buttery trinity-stuffed shrimp, the smoked Alabama white wings and the roasted oysters with smoked garlic butter, are fun to share and clearly made with soul. Popular entrée items include the backyard barbecue chicken with brown butter sweet potato mash, the tantalizing baby back ribs with collard greens and the juicy blue smoke burger with cheese and bacon. Jazz Standard's southern inspiration continues in the dessert course, with decadent treats like banana cream pie topped with caramel popcorn, peanuts and caramelized bananas on a vanilla cookie crust. If you are going to Jazz Standard for some live music and a drink, it also has a snack menu for lighter bites, such as homemade biscuits.

Big Chief a.k.a. Donald Harrison and Terell Stafford a.k.a. T-Staff were the perfect pairing for a weekend at the Jazz Standard! Big Chief brought it big from his originals to his New Orleans hits! Terell Stafford was the featured guest with the chops of a powerhouse Brass Master blowing out the uptempo numbers and the beautifully hypnotic ballads in the mix. Terell Stafford is the Top Trumpeter who leads with his horn whether it's his band or someone elses! Keep featuring Terell Stafford in many hit weekend features, Jazz Standard! Bravo Big Chief!

Great Jazz club where you can also have BBQ Dinner. But watch the suggested gratuity on the check. They suggest 15%, 18% and 20% of the entire check. However in my case 50% of the check was the cover charge for the entertainment. I don't think I should have to tip on the cover charge?

Jazz Standard is a unique combination of great food and great music. The updated menu is exceptional. Portions are large and the BBQ pit offerings are intensely flavored and satisfying. Service is friendly, attentive and professional. The quiet policy during the performance is respected by an audience that appreciates jazz. Always a wonderful night out.

I came here with some friends visiting from Toronto for one of their birthdays and we had an absolutely amazing time. We had dinner and stayed for the jazz show which was unbelievable. The food at dinner was to die for! The portions were extremely generous as well. Our waitress Sam was incredibly attentive and friendly. And the kitchen was nice enough to give us some complimentary snacks for the table. Definitely a very memorable night! I recommend this place to anyone who loves good food and music!

We go to the Jazz Standard for the music, not the food. We might come for dinner if there were a few more options for vegetarians, so that we wouldn't feel like second-class citizens cobbling a meal out of side dishes. The new menu is a slight improvement--more vegetable sides. I understand it's a barbecue place, but still....

Went to hear Azar Lawrence Quartet perform John Coltrane so food was secondary. Disappointed with menu changes made by new executive chef. Almost completely different. Sweet potato fries are gone. Got the ribs, good but not great. Brisket was good, got the marbled. They were great before. Miss the rib sampler which has amazing beef ribs. Will be back for music. but will not go to Blue Smoke anymore just for the food upstairs. too bad, it was one of our favorites.

…because now I can't give it even more stars. The music and ambiance remain top notch and Jazz Standard is one of the best date-night spots in NYC (although truth be told a few more jazz vocal bookings would be great). But a recent change in the kitchen has seen Jazz Standard revamp its menu. What was always delicious, in a somewhat down-home, comfort-food way, has now gained a newfound sophistication. Even the fried chicken stands out with syrup (add on some of the house-made hot sauce for a pleasant surprise). The new sides are a complete--and welcome--departure from what was there. The steak-cut fries are excellent; the butter beans are amazing. Sadly, we took so long to savor our dinner, we didn't have time to test the desserts. We'll have to go back soon.

The food was very good and the music was a nice plus. We were a party of six so I felt the $30 cover charge for each of us plus the drinks and food made the bill too expensive. There should be an adjustment on the cover charge with such a large party. Charge for 3 or 4 cover. I will probably not go back.

I thoroughly enjoyed my dinner and show. My wife and I expected a long wait for the food but we were pleasantly surprised that our order was placed and came in no time. We went to the early show and got in line about 30 minutes before opening. The food was excellent as were our seats. There were no obstructions to the stage. I see why Jazz Standand is rate very high as a jazz venue. The drinks were not disappointing at all.

While the food at Blue Smoke & Jazz Standard has evolved over the years - I'm not always sure the menu developments have been for the better - it is still among the best BBQ spots in the city. Add that to top-tier jazz talents, an evening at Jazz Standard will always be a great experience.

Consistently delicious food. On this occasion the softshell crabs, as well as the baby back ribs, were outstanding. But I am frustrated that no matter how early I arrive or how I plead with the wait staff, as happened the last three times I came, I waited for an hour with nothing to eat, and our dinner arrived after the music had started. But with such good food and music, we'll be back.

Nice place in a great location. The audience is mostly mature and not to mention that I am 57 and my wife is 54. We were in NYC for only a couple of days and the duo was not playing our favorite style jazz, but we had no choice. However, overall it was good music. The service was late and vague but quickly recovered when the check time got closer.

Having come here often, we have high expectations. The appetizer salad was tasty but tiny. We were frustrated that we had to wait for over an hour for our main courses even though we were among the earliest to arrive. The striped bass and especially the short ribs with spring vegetables were delicious, but it was frustrating to eat them in the dark well after the music started. Our waitress apologized and offered to comp the appetizers so the negative score for service is directed at the kitchen.

It was a fun place to come if you wanted to listen to jazz for an hour with some friends. The food was better than I anticipated- the mashed potatoes were especially good. They also have a decent drink selection with some old-school faves. Be warned that you are more or less kicked out once the jazz is over so that they can get ready for the next group of people. It's not a place where you can linger.

Great food and fantastic music. Took my wife here for valentine's day - she is a jazz lover, and she was so happy with the experience. The ribs are fantastic, and the sweet potato fries were the best I've ever had. It can be a little cramped - it was a holiday - so depending on where you sit, there isn't much elbow room/room to spread out. But, still, we had a fun filled, music filled, romantic evening!

Where else in NYC can you hear great jazz and eat terrific barbeque? The food comes from Blue Smoke upstairs, and the ribs are fantastic. The jazz programs vary greatly, something for every taste. Good sightlines and acoustics. Never a minimum. This is my favorite place for jazz, and I am a born and bred Newyorker.
