Kaya Malay Bistro Ratings and Reviews
This restaurant is an amazing place for it's delicious food & exceptional service. The owner Scott treats you with such care & makes you feel extra special when you are a guests at the restaurant.
The all you eat option is worthwhile to try out the authentic cruisine. Curry Nyonya Chicken and Char Kurt Teow are pretty good. My favorite is Durian Gelato. You don't get that quite often elsewhere.
This place was very accommodating to our group of 8. The food was very tasty and the service was good. I will definitely go back. The only downside was the meter parking which we had to go out and refill a few times.
The happy hour was good. It was not that busy. The sever was excellent. The food we ordered was not satisfying. Too sweet. Calamari was the best dish.
We were there for Father's day lunch, and the service was very poor. When we got to the restaurant, no one paid attention and after waiting to be seated for a couple of minutes we had to flag one of the staff to let them know we were there and had made reservations, our table was not ready and once we finally got seated, there was a cleaning cloth on the table next to ours that stayed there until we left the restaurant. Our food came slow, and we were waiting for our beef rendang to arrive until the end of our meal, and the staff neglected to tell us that they had run out of that particular item. Overall, a bad experience
I had high hopes for this place after hearing a chef from Banana Leaf had moved here but just our luck I think all the good chefs were not there this time. The manager said staff had called in sick.
Went for the AYCE lunch and it was the worst service I have ever gotten at a restaurant. It appeared like you only got food if you ordered a la carte off the regular menu. The table beside us who came after our table had 3/4 of all their dishes before we even got our appetizers. So it didn't appear to be just a staff issue, it was a prioritization of their customers. Or an outright snub. Why even offer this deal if you don't want to serve it?
When we also asked about main dishes that still had not come an hour and half later we were told they were out of the ingredients. Really unimpressed. Would they have told us after waiting 2 hours for our food?
Only reason I'm not giving them one star is that the manager did seem apologetic and gave us a generous discount off our bill. Hopefully this was a one off horrible day for them but I think they lost a lot of customers today. We weren't the only table looking hungry and annoyed.
Amazing , will definitely be back , and definitely recommend for great tasting food
Excellent meal! Place was surprisingly empty but the food was delicious. Service was excellent. Tried a variety of dishes to share and everything was good. Great introduction to Malaysian food. Definitely will be back.
Go there quite often. Enjoy the friendly service and good food.
Always love their food. Had their desserts for the first time and they were awesome. Our server offered us a 10% off one time discount card too!
Best satay i had! You have got to try them. The rest of dishes are OK but still above average when compared with other Malaysian restaurants in Vancouver.
Food and service overall was great !
Always great consistent good quality Malaysian food.
Better experience tonight! Food came out quickly and tasted great! Servers were all working together and there wasn't a point during my meal where I had an empty glass of water.
Kaya may be the best Malaysian restaurant in Vancouver. The soft-shell crab, king prawns, lobster and crab (special order) is terrific. The staff is friendly and competent.
"Yusheng" means "raw", unfortunately the salmon was cooked so not authentic. One appy was brought out and other person had to wait 10mins for their appy ... for a dish that didn't need much cooking. Had to tell them to bring our entrees at the same time.
Went for dine-out Vancouver, $30/head for "3 course meal". Ambiance was not great, bright lighting, sat us in a crappy end table spot. Ordered our two appetizers, took half an hour and only one arrived, then the second like 15 minutes later. Mine was yam soup and it was cold. We both order prawn and scallop stirfry main. I ordered mine withh " add chicken" option for $2 extra. My dish came 25 after minutes. It was a tiny portion of prawns, scallops and rice, was cold, and there were 2 miniscule pieces of chicken added. It was pathetic. My girlfriend's order came 10 minutes later, and was also small, cold and pathetic. At a minimum they could have brought the crap all at once. Dessert was tiny portions and was below average. What a complete waste of $80 dollars on a meal. Will never go back and would not recommend anyone to go ever.
The food was really delicious. We ordered: appetizer sharing platter, mussel entree, lamb entree, noodle dish, and extra plain rice (much needed to go with the yummy sauces in the entrees). I would definitely go back for the food. However, here's the downside that I hope the restaurant will fix: 1. the restaurant was cold, even with the space heater going - two of us needed to put on our coats and because it was generally cold, our food quickly cooled off. 2. the appetizer sharing platter came at the exact same time as all our entrees - would have been nice to have the appetizer as an appetizer. 3. overall service was good but they were understaffed - they would have done better with one other server to help out.
Won't go again . Restaurant likes a freezer . Not enough heat .
We had a large group for lunch. They forgot all about our appetizer order but failed to apologize when this was pointed out. Main meals took over half an hour to arrive and service was overall quite poor. Room was freezing cold, most of us wearing winter jackets to keep warm.
Great place to eat. Roti, Haiwanese Chicken, eggplant, and satay are recommended!
Appetizer platter was a good choice. We love their chicken satay and roti canai. Main course was okay.
Food was excellent and interior was very cool. Only issue was we came on a Friday night with a band playing. The band was playing with a full microphone and speaker system and made it difficult to hear any conversation. It seemed out of place and jarring for a restaurant like this. If the band were playing without mics it would have been perfect, but unfortunately this aspect made the experience less than optimal.
Great Malaysian food in Vancouver. The food was full of flavour and as close to the real thing in Malaysia. Wide selection of dishes and they even had pisang goreng (fried banana!!). Only downside is the restaurant is a little 'echoey' and hence a little noisy at times but don't let that put you off!!! Definitely worth a visit!!
dishes were too watered down, not enough spices. more of a fusion of canadian style malaysian
new menu item , nonya curry chicken had no spicy taste or coconut taste and was more of a soup.
the setting is nice and comfortable.
clean and well taken care for.
very good malay/singaporean style food. I enjoyed the variety!
We were a party of ten with one vegetarian. No problem with flexibility in menu selections to accommodate special requests. Good food prepared perfectly and the timing of the dishes was first rate. Very reasonable prices and you will not go home hungry
Have been many times and always had great experiences. This time, it was Saturday night and it was very busy, so the food and service wasn't five star the way it usually is. Still very good, though.
Although the food was very good, the service was mediocre at best. I believe this is from the lack of experience. A group of us came in to dine on a Saturday evening and it didn't appear to be busy. Throughout the evening, it appeared the servers paid little attention to our group. When our food came out, the servers would simply plopped them down on the tables with little regard. As the evening went on, I had to grab the attention of the servers to take away our empty plates left on the table. When we were done with our meal, we had a few plates with leftover and kindly asked for them to pack them away. I was surprised to see that they thought it was OK to stack them on top of one another. I was certainly not impressed...
Please train your servers because if I based it solely on the food, I would certainly come back but not with service like this.
We went there to listen to the Jazz music.
Food was utterly delicious. We had appy platter, which has all the sampler appetizer. I just loved everything on the plate. Quite honestly, I didn't expect this restaurant to be that good (sorry) but I'm so convinced that this is the best pan-asian restaurant in Vancouver.
I enjoyed the live jazz, and the diverse menu, although I was a little confused by the jumbo prawns. Were difficult to eat them.
yum food and good service
The food was amazing and the portion sizes were great for the price. Since I'm vegetarian, I had the Gado Gado, the mango papaya salad, and the Sayur Lemak, while the rest of the party shared an appetizer platter, pineapple fried rice, and some other meat dishes.
The vegetarian dishes I got to try were not spicy enough for my palate, but the flavours were quite indulgent. The salad was refreshing and crunchy while the Gado Gado had depth of flavour. The Sayur Lemak fell short as I could only taste the coconut and not the flavour of the curry or vegetables.
As for the service, they were kind and quite attentive. The only thing I wish they did was give our rice with the entrées as we had to ask for them before we could resume eating.
Overall, a great place to dine with family or a couple friends.
Excellent food with Malay/Singapore flavors. Really enjoyed the the otak sole. Just as advertised. love asparagus with beef. Just dynamite flavor. However, rice is a total rip off! $2.5 a bowl? Come on, you're just asking me to do take out....
Unbearable live band music (June 10)~ very annoying choice of music. Ruin the whole dinner.
A group of us from our book club dined here on a weeknight. Staff were pleasant and accommodating, and ensured our drinks never went empty. I ordered the laksa and it was aromatic and bursting with flavour. Everyone I spoke to enjoyed their meals.
Yes it's busy, we understand. But, it took a long time for anyone to come and take our orders. When food did come, we were missing certain dishes that we have ordered. We ended up just cancelling the order. The food was at least decent. You ca find better dishes for the same price elsewhere
The food was good but the one concern we had was the fact that when we were ready to go, get everything packed up, and pay, our server was nowhere to be found. This place is no Banana Leaf but it's something I'd settle for if banana leaf was packed.
Kaya always has the best and flavorful food! I took my boyfriend who is half Malaysian and he loved it. The flavours were amazing and they also have amazing lunch specials! Will be back for sure!
They offer two 10 course set menus for a min of 6 and 10 diners. I've tried both and they are amazingly delicious. Good value for all that food, I left full each time.
I'm not a big fan of deep fried banana but the batter on theirs was so crispy and light, I had to have more. This place will be my first choice for Malaysian food.
