Made a 9:30 reservation and showed up to a closed restaurant. Sign said open till 10pm buy the server on the floor ignored me when I knocked. This is the 3rd time I have tried to get in at 9:30 and have been turned me away
Don't be steered away from the poor ratings from DineOut! The restaurant is quiet and clean. Food was tasty and service was prompt! It was excellent!
The dine out meal was good value and delicious . Speedy and professional service a sharp contrast to other reviews so I am pleasantly surprised.
we went to Kaya for the vancouver dine out experience. we have been to Kaya before for the last 2-3 years but this time was the worst we have ever experienced. They charged $20 for the dinner menu which I know I shouldn't expect too much. But they couldn't even do the basic right. The portion was so small, the greens(appetizer)had a foul smell to it. Same thing with the main course, the portion was pitifully small and the food was barely warm. (it is supposed to be a hot dish)The dessert was ok. we ordered the fried banana with ice cream, and of course, we only have less than a half of the banana. They had a full house that night but they were totally under staff. The servers were trying their best but there were just too many disappointment/complaints with the customers and the servers couldn't manage at all. We had tried other $20 menu restaurants in vancouver and I have to say, Kaya is the worst $20 dine out experience we have ever experienced. We will not go back again for sure.
Food was great. The server kept bringing other people's orders, but that didn't take away from the experience.
Delicious Malaysian food, pretty authentic.. I lived there for two years and it seems spot on. Service ok and seating was tight and squishy.
We tried Kaya Malay during Dine Out Vancouver. The week night that we were there they were very busy with a very large group that had come in just before us. This put quite a strain on the wait staff but they did their best to keep things moving. The Dine Out menu was amazing as it gave us a great introduction to the type of food and quality available here.
Nice selection for Dining Out Vancouver. The server was on to us right as we sat. Nice opportunity for a wine taste. Appetizer, mains and desserts were sumptuous.
Super slow service. Went here for dine out. Only 3 other tables were in and the waitresses barely acknowledged us. One was in a white shirt (maybe she was on her break), but she made eye contact and looked away. Only the other lady (think she was the manager or supervisor) served us and she was great. Thanks for making it better.
Interesting Malaysian food in the Dine Out Vancouver 2018 menu. The two of us shared 2 menus, thus we have 6 dishes to sample. All being delicious and filling. Room for improvement for the Rendang beef though. In addition to the menus, we ordered an additional dish of tiger prawn belacan which was outstanding and finger-licking good.
Waitress forgot our order, took over an hour to get our first appetizer.
Since they forgot our order, they had run out of dessert options so we were forced to take whatever was left.
Portions were extremely small, rice was dry and the food was very bland.
For a big event like dineout you would think they would step up their customer service and food quality but it was very disappointing and not worth the money (even with a 10% discount for order mistake).
We got the table at 6pm, and the food didn't arrive till 7pm. Waitress came with the entree first and missed our starter, then took away the entree because it was cold, and we waited for another 20 min for the starter to arrive, and it was wrong again!! I couldn't believe how their excuse was that they lost the order, it's just unacceptable for people who just want to enjoy some food after a tiring day of work.
I will never recommend this restaurant to anyone in my life.
The Dine Out Vancouver 2018 menu had lots of variety and was good value at $20 for 3 courses. Service was friendly too.
Appreciated that they seated us 10mins earlier than our reservation time. The food was delish and you get to try a few things. Definitely great price for the DOV menu. Only strange thing was the fried banana served in a glass. Maybe they could have sliced up the banana in a 3/4 chunky pieces, deep fried each piece and served in a more open bowl/plate rather than a deep glass. It was probably in a glass just to keep the ice cream frozen. The overall experience was great.
Great service and tasty food! Tried Dine Out menu for lunch. Only complaint is the desserts banana and ice cream mainly fried dough, sliver of banana found inside the fried dough. The rest of the meal was good!
Went here for dine out. We made reservations @815 and we arrived 20 minutes early and they said it would be another 20 minutes after 815 for a seat. They said many people made reservations and that was why they couldn't seat people yet. There were at least 15 other people waiting. If you know you have a promotion, staff your team up!
Can't even get in the door. Everybody was waiting for their reservation. People who had been seated waited for an hour. No table had any food. Horrible organizing. Won't give any explanation to all the people waiting at the front door
Could be more organized and have better communication between servers. Also, the food should be served all together so customers don't watch their friends eat while they wait. Otherwise, the food was amazing and the servers were friendly!
i can't even get in the door, i booked a table but can't even get a seat. Very unorganize restaurant , will never recommend anyone or go there again.
Booked a reservation at 7:30. When I arrived there was a massive line. I waited about 25 minutes to be seated. There were barely any servers. They had to pull people from the back to help (could tell by the clothes since everyone else was wearing black) everyone was running around sweating. Waited another 45 mins to get appitizer. And another 20 after that to get entree. The lady said that OpenTable did not stop reservations that's why they were over booked. However I don't think that explains why they had so little people working. I'm pretty sure any restaurant would have to assume that a Friday night would be busy. When we got our food. There was barely anything. You could tell they were running out of food.
Confirmed my reservation the day of and arrived early. However despite all that, I kept being told to wait 10 more minutes for my party of 8. After 30 minutes we asked which table we were waiting for and how much longer. We were told that a table was just finishing up and they were just waiting to receive their dessert. That was easily another half hour wait to wait for them to receive, eat, pay and clean the table. Ended up walking out after that. We were hungry and not willing to wait another hour and a half to be seated and served some good. Severely understaffed and we were one of multiple parties that just gave up and left regardless of having reservations.
Extremely under staff. Food did not taste like Malay food. Food was not hot. Very disappointed.
We went there with another couple for Dine Out. Had reservation but still waited for 20 minutes before being seated. Ordered right away. It took OVER 1 HOUR before our appetizers came, then another half before we got the entree. Portions were small and everything was lukewarm. We had to ask the servers numerous time when our food was coming!!! In the mean time we had to keep plugging the parking meter because we were there for a total of 2.5 hours. I definitely DO NOT recommend this restaurant.....not for the food and definitely not for the service.
Our first time as a group from work but the whole experience was very poor. We were not served on time and had to go out several times to the parking meters as it was almost 3 hours there when your request was 1and half hours due to the dine out. We were there at 6:25pm and got seated upstairs as a group and after ordering some of us got our entrees bit by bit and some got their main meals before the entree. The servers were reminded several times to bring the missed out meals. At9:0 0 pm after several reminders we were still not served dessert and then we left as it was getting late for some of us. I understand that they were short but this was ridiculous and many people in the line up were complaining too as well as those seated. Thanks for inquiring
I am disappointed with Kaya after hearing so many good things from friends who have eaten here. Our party of 6 dined for 3 hours during the dine out event. Drinks came out slowly after we have reminded the staff that we have ordered drinks. The appetizers came out one by one in 10 min intervals. Entrees were the same. The food was stone cold and our water glasses did not get refilled at all until a server was waved over. None of the staff paid attention to us and ignored us the entire time. Desserts never came. Some of us ordered deep fried bananas which never arrived. We asked a server and she said that it would be another 5-10 minutes. 45 minutes later after being told that, we still didn't get our desserts. My party got so frustrated with waiting, we asked for the bill and left promptly. I asked one of the staff why the slow service, and the only explanation that she can give me is that the kitchen staff is disorganized and she has no idea what is going on in the kitchen. This to me is no excuse. It is their responsibility and their job to find out and make things right for their customers. If you have no bananas for dessert, don't just ignore your customers and hope they forget....just come out and explain or be honest to your customers that you're out of bananas and offer something else.
I'm disappointed with the lack of customer service and the ignorance of the staff. This isn't a new restaurant or their first day. They have been in business for a few years and it was the 2nd week of dine-out. I think they should have been prepared for the turnout during this event. Unfortunately, I was very unhappy overall with my dining experience at Kaya.
We expected our meals to be served fluidly and promptly as we ordered the Dine Out Vancouver lunch. While our appetizers were served promptly, my partner's main course was served about 10 minutes after mine and was lukewarm when it arrived.
Really enjoyed the dine out menu .Very good value. Excellent beef rendang!
This was Dine Out Vancouver 2018 option so my husband and I took the opportunity to try out this restaurant. We love Malaysian food but were not impressed by this restaurant.
The appetizer and entree had good variety but the sauces weren't as flavourful as we like.( I don't know if they toned down the spice for Dine Out.) One part of my entree was a fish selection with one prawn, one piece of fish and one mussel. The mussel, which was placed on top, was closed. A closed mussel means that it was dead before cooking and it should not be eaten. My husband's dish had an open mussel and it was fine. I feel that having to place a mussel as an accent on top of a dish would allow the person placing it to notice whether or not it was open, especially since it was a solitary item. Of course, the person could have been exceptionally busy and simply missed it but it worried me. Dead mussels often have enough bacteria to make a person very sick. I didn't bring it to our server's attention as she seemed very busy.
I can understand if you order a pound of mussels and one or two are closed. That's fine and such things won't necessarily be obvious amongst all the other mussels and you can't expect the kitchen or server to remove them. However, just one mussel as an accent and closed at that made me think the standards may not be very high at this restaurant which would make me think twice about going back.
We each had a different dessert (deep-fried banana and a coconut pana cotta). Neither were worth eating after the first few bites. Deep-fried banana is a favourite of mine.
I'm very sad to give this poor review as I would have been delighted to discover a new favourite restaurant.
Went to try the dine out menu. Was seated right away. It was a busy night with only 3 waiters/servers. Food came relatively quick but the food was cold. Only thing hot was the rice. It felt like they batch cooked everything and didn’t bother to warm up the food before serving it out. Waited 15 mins to get the waiter’s attention for the bill cause they were busy going back and forth between tables and kitchen. Very understaffed.
We had lunch at Kaya Malay Bistro as part of Vancouver Dine Out promo. The restaurant decor was very plain with no real feel of Malaysian decor however we didn't primarily come to the restaurant for the decor. The food & service were excellent. The restaurant opened at 11:30 AM and within a hour was full. Appetizers came fairly quickly with tasty, sampler portions. We ordered both protein (beef & chicken) combo appys which were shared. There was just enough of each 3 course tapa to enjoy and leave room for the entree. We also ordered both of the protein (chicken & beef) 4 course entrees which were also shared. There was a nice balance/variety of entrees in each of the courses. We have dined at many Malaysian restaurants in the Lower Mainland and I would highly recommend Kaya Malay Bistro for their tasty and authentic food.
DineOut menu was a nice variety of items.
My brother & I ordered different items and were very happy with all the components.
Great food and service. Thank you. Huggies.
Wonderful tasting menu, must go back to have more of some of the selections, though all were good! Pandan Panna Cotta was an amazing dessert!
Slight mixup in delivering food--the table next door got one of our appetizers. They made another no problem, but that meant it arrived after the main course. Just need to number their tables and let the delivery person know who the food goes to by table number. Otherwise, service was friendly and good.
Came for dineout on a Monday night at 8:00pm. Reservations were easy to make and the restaurant wasn't too busy at the time. We were promptly seated, and had great service throughout the night. Food was delicious, and the pandan panna cotta was amazing!
The Dine Out portions are worth the money! We like the authenticity of the dishes being served to us. Overall recommended!
Was still starving after eating here. Portions were really really really really really small.
Took my family to try out their dine out. They’re friendly staff pretty much sit us right the way at a round table, which is great to talk to one and other. Overall food is good and get to try out lot of different variety of tasty food. Perhaps because they were busy, one of my dish is kind of cold. I will still go there again and recommend to other people.
Service was spot on. Went there for their dineout menu. Really enjoyed their food. Atmosphere was nice. Will return for more.
Came here for dineout. Appetizer and entree was a good showcase of the usual menu by offering an assortment of different items. Dessert was a bit disappointing. Location and environment is family friendly and good for dates.
The food was very tasty. Good environment. Boyfriend thought the food could be a little warmer, but I don't think it derailed from the wonderful taste.
