Classic French bistro food in kits . Best French onion soup , goat cheese tart & mussels & Frits. Super tasty house made ice cream sorbets. Very consistent
La Cigale is a small and under-appreciated French Bistro in the Kitsilano neighborhood of Vancouver. Wonderful mussels and fries in an herb crème sauce, perfectly cooked filet mignon topped with a blue cheese crust, and a crispy skinned duck leg and thigh on a bed of cassoulet. The cassoulet was strangely sweet, but the rest of the meal was totally delicious. Have a bottle of a reasonably priced bottle of local Canadian or French wine. An excellent bargain for a French Bistro in Vancouver. A taxi from downtown will cost $10-$15.
I started with the cauliflower grated, which was rich and delicious and definitely a dish to share. I tried some of my friends side salad, which was also delicious and a meal size, not really a starter. My husband had the escargot, which he enjoyed. I had the duck confit, which was very good. It was very flavourful and moist, which can be hard to do with duck. A very filling meal. Despite being very full, we all shared a crime brûlée, which we didn’t regret. The wine list had a good selection of nice wines. Our server was very knowledgeable and made great suggestions for our table. She did a great job. We were surprised it wasn’t busier, it’s a great place. It was our first time there, but we’ll be back.
Beautifully made French food, from casual to finest filet mignon... I love this place and always take my friends and family members from out of town here. It is a special place, lovely service and food. Tuesdays are 'bring your own wine' days. The ambience is casual, friendly, with lovely interior. Dropping by for brunch, lunch or afternoon charcuterie or a bowl of their fabulous onion soup and bread, or going for a special dinner, it's Kitsilano at its best!
Server was lovely and the fresh baked french bread was great, but the french onion soup was bland. The soup bowl looks like it is covered with real cheese, but it is actually three slices of bread topped with only a minuscule amount of flavourless cheese, floating on top of mushy boiled onions. I was so hoping for the delicious gooey cheese topped, tasty french onion soup I once had in Montreal and this unfortunately did not come anywhere close.
Love love love!!! First time eating here and I can’t say enough. Best French Onion soup ever. Beef cheeks and mashed potatoes to die for!!!!!
An amazing hidden gem of an authentic French restaurant. One of the best in Vancouver.
The baguette is the best I have tasted. The French Onion soup is excellent. It is slightly salty for my taste. That is why the 4 stars. Otherwise, 5 stars.
Another great evening spent with good food, wine and friends. Wonderful neighbourhood location with authentic French Bistrot food.
Third time be here. So good! Merci
Would recommend it for someone looking for french cuisine. Service was fast and very friendly. We showed up early and they seated us immediately! The only real downside was something that the restaurant could not control I think. It was hot where we sat nearer the kitchen. If I had a do over I would sit closer to the front, at least in the summer.
All in all, a very nice experience.
Went for the fixed-price menus available from Sundays to Thursdays. The food was amazing, and the value was incredibly good! A good place to eat for all sorts of occasions.
We had an absolutely wonderful dining experience! We had the fixed menu and thoroughly enjoyed our selections. Highly recommended. Our server, although we did not catch her name, was lovely
Surprisingly large portions for a french cuisine restaurant. Just an appetizer or a main will satisfy most people. We ordered an appetizer and a main each and none of us finished all the food.
The quality of the food was good but not great. The wait staff were very kind and accommodating.
The food was unfortunately not great. They came also late even if it was not a busy evening.
This was our third try at Cigale and, well, we won't be coming back. There are just too many more options that are better. Not that there was anything wrong, it was just -ok- compared to stuff across the street and up and down this great stretch of offering. Check out Maenam or Fable for example. Compared to how busy those places are to Cigale, we aren't the only ones who think so. 1 sever for the entire place on a Wednesday at dinner time and she had only a little trouble keeping up. Nothing popped out of the flavour of the mussels, the duck was, as I said - ok-, nothing too special. If you want something special, well this isn't the place
It’s fair French restaurant. Don’t have many choice. But fast is good.
Great little place. I think it was reviewed by the Strait a couple of years ago. Still lives up to the good review. Delicious food and friendly service.
We were told to rush our order because there were others coming. The waitress really made a point of the need to order immediately even though we wanted to sit over a drink first. We had made a reservation and the restaurant was not crowded then or later in the evening while we were there.
My steak was completely cold and the cheese was a congealed mass on top. I mentioned this to the waitress who told me that she could tell the chef to cook it for 5 more minutes (I had ordered it very rare!!!) My frites were soggy. We got no bread and I understood later that we would have had to pay for it. That is churlish.
When we later tried to pay and leave we were ignored and had to yell a number of times to get the server's attention - same person who told us to "hurry up" and order.
I like French food and would not visit again.
Service was generally good, food was fairly decent.
Server was very pleasant. I didn’t find the food that amazing but it was ok if u like under seasoned . Had the mussels. Lots of bread, somewhat bland sauce. Croquet monsieur had very little flavour..despite the cheese and ham. Fries were ok but had to ask for salt. Coffee with a langue du chat cookie was lovely..
Une excellente cuisine française internationale. Rapport qualité prix exceptionnel. La serveuse d'origine du Nouveau-Brunswick était compétente et attentionnée. Un rare restaurant permettant d'apporter sa bouteille de vin.
Wonderful food, service and ambience. Great find - we’ll be back!
We've been to La Cigale several times and it's always very good. It's a wonderful neighborhood spot.
Vancouver needs more spots like this! Reasonably priced, really good unpretentious french bistro fare. A simple casual room graced with friendly helpful service. If this place was within walking distance of my home, I wouldn't need a kitchen!
Delicious salmon on potato pancakes for brunch. Salmon tasted fresh and the potato pancakes were delicious.
It was absolutely wonderful.
Our first time in and the server was actually right! Everything did taste great!
Wonderful service great food! Can’t get any better
Our meal was perfect, from our server to the kitchen being mindful of allergies.
I've been to La Cigale several times for lunch and several for dinner. The food is authentic French bistro and very well executed. One of the things that distinguishes La Cigale from most restaurants is how quiet it is, which makes conversation (and dinner) so much more pleasant. Highly recommended for great food and service, and a lovely atmosphere.
Valentines dinner date night. Everything was delicious!!
Service was not great-slow . The server mixed up the order but also didn’t understand English well. Food was overpriced for the quality. We have noticed a change on our last 2 visits
Went in with a reserved booking for Dine Out. The portion for the set meals were just right and tasted good. One of the appetizers (cauliflower on baguette) was larger than expected and tasted nice. The onion soup was not salty at all so that was a good change. The dessert was nothing too special in terms of options but was not disappointed in terms of taste.
Really good food but the wait staff are pretty snobby and rude.
La Cigale always excel in the quality and taste of their dishes. We had the dine-out last year, and came back this year for the good food. We have been coming for other occasions, and always have an enjoyable meal and evening whenever we come.
Lovely food but waitress told us a few things ( we had requested) were not available like Soupe du Jour and Onion Tarte because of Dine-out Vancouver, which we thought odd. We assumed all would be prepared fresh each day.
i brought my family for a Sunday brunch. It took a long time before we got attended and order our lunch. The food take a long time to come. The food is good we all like it. Lunch service is slow for my liking.
One of the best French restaurants that I've been to for a large group of people. Their French Onion Soup was delicious despite a bit on the salty side. The Duck Confit was good and paired well with the cranberry sauce. However, the skin was soft and not crispy, which was disappointing. The sweetness of my Creme Brûlée was parfait! There were also times where we had difficulty communicating with our server. Nonetheless, it was a good experience. I would come back again.
Enjoyed great food during the Dine Out Vancouver event. Everyone’s meals were delicious.
Went out for Vancouver dine out menu. Very impressed with the Boeuf braisé. Service was slow which was ok with me. They mixed up our order with another table but they offered us a 20% discount to make it up.
We were there for Dine Out Vancouver 2018. The food had a home-made feeling to it, and it was good food. The service was pretty good even when the place was fairly full.
