Located in historic Gastown between Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley, built in the 19th century on the site of Vancouver's first jail and originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past. Set in a refurbished brick and beam building combining classic French tile work with industrial fixtures and natural wood, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge, elevated dining room and a plush, light soaked atrium as well as private dining rooms. Chef/Owner Lee Cooper is dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating & drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. Service is expertly orchestrated to be unpretentious yet refined. From a friendly greeting to wonderful service and excellent, imaginative quality food, our dining experience at L-Abattoir was perfect. We got the best seat in the house (front corner upstairs overlooking the bar) and the covid barriers and protocols made us comfortable. Our server recommended a good wine that went with our meal. We each had a starter (scallops - delicious!, and sweetbreads on sourdough - pretty tasty) and a main (sable fish and halibut - both excellent, fresh and perfectly prepared). Shared the apple cake for dessert. Perfect degree of delicate sweetness. Thank you for a lovely dinner!

The experience was 1st class start to finish. Our waiter, Edgar, was the best I've encountered in a very long time. Very knowledgeable on wine pairings. As well he seemed to anticipate our needs but not be always "there".

Would recommend this restaurant unreservedly.

Appetizers we chose weren't our favorite but the main dishes were amazing. It was very hard to hear the servers with their masks on and they spoke quite fast. But other than that, L'Abattoir was just great!

It's been a few years since our last visit to L'Abattoir and were still incredibly pleased with our dinner and service. I think it is one of the top five restaurants in Vancouver. Not to be missed.

The service was amazing, food was good but the portion was too little. We got 2 starters and 2 main dishes for 3 people and we were not that hungry. I’d be interested in the tasting menu like other french/italian restaurants that I like.

The food and service were amazing. The only problem was that they sat us in the back of the restaurant which doesn’t have the same ambiance. It’s a bit pricey so you expect the best at all level. We were disappointed with the ambiance. It probably would have been a different story if they would have sat us in the front with all the other customers.

Huge thanks to the staff for one of the most wonderful meal experiences we've had. Our group enjoyed practically every dish on the menu, and we wouldn't have changed a thing (except maybe ordered more oysters, if our stomachs allowed!). The sommelier helped us pair each course, and the service from everyone who touched the table was spot on. Can't wait for our next trip back!

Dined with a friend inside at L’Abattoir this week. Meal was excellent, service was great and I felt very comfortable with the precautions they are taking to manage through Covid - masks for the servers, appropriate table spacing. Restaurant is lovely and the food was very, very good. Enjoyed the scallop appetizer, the tomato appetizer, the Sablefish main and the chocolate torte for dessert. Highly recommend especially for a special evening or date.

The meal was fantastic, and our server was great and provided a great wine suggestion. The bartender or drink specialist ego delivered our after dinner drinks gave us a ton of information on them and we really appreciated it.

We had a lovely experience at L'Abattoir! We were given complimentary flutes of bubbly as we were calebrating an anniversary, I thought that was a kind gesture, and elevated our overall expereince. The steak and Halibut were DELICIOUS! I will definetly return again.

Thought we were booked for Dine Out Outside special. Disappointed that wasn’t the case. They would have moved us outside, if they got an opening. We were already seated so chose to stay inside. But felt mislead AND couldn’t get the special menu so spent MUCH more than expected. The food was good but didn’t make me want to go back soon.

Everything was absolutely amazing! The baked oysters and sea scallops for starters were delicious. The poached halibut melted in your mouth. The lamb saddle was cooked to perfection. The Duck was cooked nicely, not dry at all...the only negative was the grilled radicchio was much too bitter. Radicchio in small amounts raw in a salad is much more preferred for my taste. We had 3 desserts plus the 4th which was their feature dessert. Our plates were left clean...that's how delicious they were. Service was attentive and impeccable by all the servers and hosts. Washrooms were very clean and sanitary. Oh and the warm variety of bread they bring you- full of goodness! Highly recommend this restaurant. We were originally wanting to go their sister restaurant Coquille just down the street but it is closed down - but we were so happy with L'Abattoir. And this review is coming from a family of 4 who are foodies!
