About L'Abattoir Restaurant
Located in historic Gastown between Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley, built in the 19th century on the site of Vancouver's first jail and originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past.
Set in a refurbished brick and beam building combining classic French tile work with industrial fixtures and natural wood, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge, elevated dining room and a plush, light soaked atrium as well as private dining rooms.
Chef Lee Cooper and owner/operator Paul Grunberg are dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating & drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. Service is expertly orchestrated to be unpretentious yet refined by General Manager Ricardo Ferreira. The French influenced West Coast fare is paired wIth Wine Director Lisa Haley's eclectic wine program and the bar team's innovative cocktail list to offer a truly unique dining experience.

L'Abattoir Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
Very tasty and very expensive. Great service. Good wine list. -- Only on very special occasions for me in future.
L'Abbatoir never disappoints. The modern space is cozy and inviting. The menu is French influenced with local ingredients. My crispy Octopus appetizer was incredible, and the duck entree was the best duck I've ever had...an absolute 10/10. We brought a special bottle of wine which was no problem, paid a modest corkage and ordered more wine from the well-thought-out wine list. I will be back as soon as I can arrange it!
Another amazing experience!
Having had high expectations, was actually disappointed overall. While the menu looked interesting, the portion size or the flavours that were presented didn't excite. Also, quite noisy and a group of 4 had difficulty hearing each other.
Wonderful food. Service has some work to measure up to the food.
Excellent food and wine service good overall but a little slow to bring Children’s meals, which can raise child parent and so staff anxiety levels. Overall an excellent experience however
We booked 2 months in advance for New Year's Eve for the second year in a row. It was amazing as usual and expected. We will definitely be booking again for next year as well as dining again during the year as many times as we can.
My second time here and both times were amazing. The food is creative and incredibly well executed. The service is superb without being stuffy or formal. The wine list is small but well curated and the cocktails are world-class.
Love this place. First time there and it won't be our last. Food is high quality, but the atmosphere is casual. Service staff is amazing.
The back room is fantastic, beautiful big windows, few tables, it's much more intimate. Very cozy and picture perfect. The decor was very French.
The staff wasn't very friendly, quite rushed. We were seated before most, but they didn't take our orders right away, they took care of other tables before ours.
The food was delicious, looks quite small but is filling. The one thing they should make clear is that when they present those delicious pastries as a starter, it is not free. It does cost $5 or $7 depending on your choice.
Overall it was a very good experience, one thing they can really improve on is service and friendlier staff... people are coming there to eat and enjoy themselves, look like you want to be there too.
The food is fabulous and the staff are very attentive yet not obtrusive- they were great with my Mom finding a wine she would like. Highly recommended!
The food are very good. I like the appetizers of octopus and oyster. For mains, ling cod and pork belly are also nice. We ordered chocolate mouse, marjolaine and yogurt panna cotta as desserts. I like yogurt one the most.
Seating not very nice, not great for intimate occasions for sure. Food presentation nice but value pretty cheeky and food not fantastic but ok. Wouldn’t recommend
Food was beautiful - creative, fresh, well presented and great balance of satisfying flavours.
Our table was excessively noisy, upstairs from the bar. Conversation was impossible without shouting at each other.
The service was terrible. Our server was ill-I formed and completely uninterested. We did notice other servers around us seems much more interested in their work, so presumably we were just unlucky.
Our bill was almost $600 and we would have happily spent the money for our special occasion dinner, and often do for special events, but this experience was a real disappointment. Could not recommend it, given some of the other restaurants on offer in Vancouver.
Avoid this restaurant at all costs. The food is possibly the worst I’ve ever had at any restaurant and the service is...words can’t describe how bad it is.
Had a wonderful experience here over the holiday season. Incredible food and the service was outstanding.
Great service, informed staff and wonderful food. We went to the restaurant for 3 graduations and loved the setting. We will return.
Amazing food best food i ever ate, great presentation, impeccable service ,they never missed a step, memorable night out
I thought the food was well prepared and looked wonderful. But there was this reoccurring pickle/vinegar flavor in almost every dish (we tried 6). It's obvious it's a flavour the chef loves, but maybe not in every dish.. that said, great looking place, good service.
We had a great time right from the start the staff was amazing. We felt very welcomed and we're treated with the utmost respect and kindness. We found that all the staff were pleasant and attentive. It was an important date for me the lady I brought is very important to me. It had a very warm atmosphere and very much suited what I was looking for that evening. My thanks to the staff for helping me make my date a success if you know what I mean... ;-)
Excellent brunch food especially house-made pastries and pancakes.
Wish they had a proper coffee maching.
Brunch here was great. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Of particular note was sort of a riff on lox and bagels, using a potato flatbread instead. Probably one of the better breakfast dishes I have ever had. If it is on the menu the next time I am in Vancouver, I will order it.
We had an amazing experience at L'abattoir. The hospitality was warm and welcoming, the wine pairing on point & the meals extremely tasty. We'll be back - thank you!
Was surprised to see two veal dishes on the menu. Had I bothered to look at the menu before booking, I would have considered going elsewhere.
Incredible service and food.
It was a perfect brunch day and we were not disappointed with our choice. We were met warmly at the door and quickly escorted to our table where we were treated to a glass of sparkling wine because it was our anniversary. Our server was knowledgeable and accommodating. We appreciated the extra insight as well as the gracious service. Highly recommend!
Food is always on point but the staff are abrupt and lack some social graces
The food and service was outstanding. Tried a few appetizers and various mains - the duck, the steak, and the lamb and was impressed was everything. The desserts were underwhelming compared to the rest of the food though.
We had an amazing time for our anniversary. Service was excellent. The wine list was stellar. The food was unreal - the new octopus dish is to die for and we are still talking about it. Being from Whistler we recommend so many Vancouver restaurants to our colleagues and friends (clients & guests too!) and yours is now at the top of the list. Keep up the amazing work and thank you so much for a memorable evening!
Loved the brunch menu. Great options and our group ordered a number of different dishes. All the food came came out at the same time, and we all enjoyed our choices.
Would definitely recommend the restaurant to friends.
Chef has some really nice dishes here. We tried the octopus and the arctic chard. Both were delicious and unique.
Great room, amazing service and the food was outstanding.
It’s really good! The food is so yummy!
BRUNCH WAS VERY GOOD BUT WOULD BE NICE TO GET STRONGER COFFEE. NO AMERICANO AVAILABLE & REGULAR COFFEE WASN'T GREAT
Went here for my bestie's birthday dinner. Overall, I find the food outstanding...you have to try their veal tartare. It's fantastic!! However, I find food came out a little too slow for such a quiet Sunday night. We waited for a substantial amount of time (around 30 mins) before the appetiser was served. Waited for another 20 minutes or so for the main course to be served. We were excited that our mains were here. But nope...the server brought the wrong food out. Apparently there was a little confusion about the main course. We ordered the lamb sausage to share but the server brought ling cod instead. The kitchen refired the main course and the lamb sausage was out in about 5 mins. Would I be back? Yes, to try the ling cod.
This would be a one star review if at the end of it the server hadn’t comped one of our meals. It took them over 1 hour to serve us brunch, during which time we got offered no food, drink or explanations except for one time. Our server spent more time avoiding us versus even taking pity and bringing a pastry. After 45 minutes he comes over to offer a weak explanation about the batter not being made up for the potato pancakes one of us had ordered (?!?!!!). The menu only had 7 items on it so how could it be one of them was not prepared. After his notification we asked a different server about our meal then she said she’d look into it and promptly disappeared never to appear again. Right as we seriously thought about walking out the food arrived. All of it was lukewarm and the potato pancake dish was greasy fried dripping in oil and none of it was even remotely as advertised for such a fine dining restaurant. Only as he came to clear the plates and asked us how it was that we politely offered our opinion. He then said he’d see what he can do and brought the bill with the comped amount for the pancakes. So seriously disappointing. The service was so so lacking (I mean no one even walked to us for 45 minutes!), the kitchen clearly unprepared and absolutely no one able to remedy a wrong. The decor is nice, the food average. Not worth going to.
The food was outstanding lots of flavour. Dishes were very well presented and perfectly cooked. The foie gras was the best part of my experience. Service was fantastic the servers were always available when you needed something but not overwhelming. They definetley knew their menu and recommended some great wines, which there were lots to choose from. Will definitely be going back.
We had to send one of the entrees back because it was cold. They were very gracious in handling the problem and gave us a free dessert. The food was delicious, the timing to bring it to our table, was a little off. I'd go back and would request a table on the main floor at the back which would be quieter than the tables upstairs.
Absolutely fantastic in all aspects, from food to service to ambiance! Had a wonderful time celebrating for a special occasion, and the staff's attentiveness was top notch. Would definitely come back here again.
