About L'Abattoir Restaurant

Located in historic Gastown between Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley, built in the 19th century on the site of Vancouver's first jail and originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past.
Set in a refurbished brick and beam building combining classic French tile work with industrial fixtures and natural wood, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge, elevated dining room and a plush, light soaked atrium as well as private dining rooms.
Chef Lee Cooper and owner/operator Paul Grunberg are dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating & drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. Service is expertly orchestrated to be unpretentious yet refined by General Manager Ricardo Ferreira. The French influenced West Coast fare is paired wIth Wine Director Lisa Haley's eclectic wine program and the bar team's innovative cocktail list to offer a truly unique dining experience.

I visited L'Abbatoir during dine out and was very happy with the menu. The atmosphere was very nice and I appreciated that there was not a high level of white noise so it was quite easy to conduct a conversation.

Don’t order octopus dish and margarine, the dine out menu does not represent this restaurant, and does not worth the money. Better order from regular menu.

We had an excellent meal at L'Abattoir. It was the first night of Dine Out Vancouver (which I had forgotten when I made the reservation 3-4 weeks prior) and we had fantastic appetizers, mains, and tasty desserts for a very good value. I look forward to coming back next time we're in Vancouver! Thanks :)

Went for Dine Out Vancouver as it is a tradition and I have gone for the past two years. As always, the cocktails were amaxing, but this year's menu was a huge disappointment as the portions were small for the plate size. As the dinner progressed, the service got significantly worse.

Dine out is great value! The char taste really great! Appetizers' portion are smaller than expected.

I went there for dine out Vancouver’s event. The quality of service is great. However the actual food is normal. I ordered a steak and my friend got char; both tasted midium rare. Steak was definitely too hard to chew even in medium rare. Char tasted a bit like half sashimi due to its cooking style. But overall experience wasn’t bad :)

Great service; good selectio of options.
Criticism: it was a little dark, the portions were a bit too small, most importantly- the tables were too close together

Not sure of it was because of the DOV but the food was mediocre, beef came almost cold. Service could be improved quite a bit... Host said they were fully booked although there were a number of open space on Open table. We had two reso for twos and were told unable to combine into one group of 4, but we could be seated next to each other with movable tables (but could not put the tables together)... (?) Just something we thought was kind of funny.

Impressive. Surprised me every visit. Very creative menu for Dineout Vancouver. The beef entree was excellent. The portion was not sufficient for men. Highly recommended.

We waited for an hour between appetizers and our entrees. We got so fed up that we asked for our bill and to cancel our order but then our food magically appeared but it was barely warm. The food was also on the salty side. I had a great experience the first time I went, not sure what happened yesterday.

L'Abbatoir never disappoints. The modern space is cozy and inviting. The menu is French influenced with local ingredients. My crispy Octopus appetizer was incredible, and the duck entree was the best duck I've ever had...an absolute 10/10. We brought a special bottle of wine which was no problem, paid a modest corkage and ordered more wine from the well-thought-out wine list. I will be back as soon as I can arrange it!

Having had high expectations, was actually disappointed overall. While the menu looked interesting, the portion size or the flavours that were presented didn't excite. Also, quite noisy and a group of 4 had difficulty hearing each other.

We booked 2 months in advance for New Year's Eve for the second year in a row. It was amazing as usual and expected. We will definitely be booking again for next year as well as dining again during the year as many times as we can.

My second time here and both times were amazing. The food is creative and incredibly well executed. The service is superb without being stuffy or formal. The wine list is small but well curated and the cocktails are world-class.

The back room is fantastic, beautiful big windows, few tables, it's much more intimate. Very cozy and picture perfect. The decor was very French.

The staff wasn't very friendly, quite rushed. We were seated before most, but they didn't take our orders right away, they took care of other tables before ours.

The food was delicious, looks quite small but is filling. The one thing they should make clear is that when they present those delicious pastries as a starter, it is not free. It does cost $5 or $7 depending on your choice.

Overall it was a very good experience, one thing they can really improve on is service and friendlier staff... people are coming there to eat and enjoy themselves, look like you want to be there too.

The food are very good. I like the appetizers of octopus and oyster. For mains, ling cod and pork belly are also nice. We ordered chocolate mouse, marjolaine and yogurt panna cotta as desserts. I like yogurt one the most.

Food was beautiful - creative, fresh, well presented and great balance of satisfying flavours.
Our table was excessively noisy, upstairs from the bar. Conversation was impossible without shouting at each other.
The service was terrible. Our server was ill-I formed and completely uninterested. We did notice other servers around us seems much more interested in their work, so presumably we were just unlucky.
Our bill was almost $600 and we would have happily spent the money for our special occasion dinner, and often do for special events, but this experience was a real disappointment. Could not recommend it, given some of the other restaurants on offer in Vancouver.

I thought the food was well prepared and looked wonderful. But there was this reoccurring pickle/vinegar flavor in almost every dish (we tried 6). It's obvious it's a flavour the chef loves, but maybe not in every dish.. that said, great looking place, good service.

We had a great time right from the start the staff was amazing. We felt very welcomed and we're treated with the utmost respect and kindness. We found that all the staff were pleasant and attentive. It was an important date for me the lady I brought is very important to me. It had a very warm atmosphere and very much suited what I was looking for that evening. My thanks to the staff for helping me make my date a success if you know what I mean... ;-)

Brunch here was great. Everyone enjoyed their meal. Of particular note was sort of a riff on lox and bagels, using a potato flatbread instead. Probably one of the better breakfast dishes I have ever had. If it is on the menu the next time I am in Vancouver, I will order it.

It was a perfect brunch day and we were not disappointed with our choice. We were met warmly at the door and quickly escorted to our table where we were treated to a glass of sparkling wine because it was our anniversary. Our server was knowledgeable and accommodating. We appreciated the extra insight as well as the gracious service. Highly recommend!
