Located in historic Gastown between Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley, built in the 19th century on the site of Vancouver's first jail and originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past. Set in a refurbished brick and beam building combining classic French tile work with industrial fixtures and natural wood, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge, elevated dining room and a plush, light soaked atrium as well as private dining rooms. Chef/Owner Lee Cooper is dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating & drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. Service is expertly orchestrated to be unpretentious yet refined.     Experience L'Abattoir's Avant-Première three course menu featuring a choice of two starters, 3 main courses and 3 desserts. Reservations are only available before 6pm and are limited to 2 hours so that guests can enjoy an indulgent dinner before continuing on with their evening of entertainment, whether it be the theatre, a concert, a sporting event or other plans later in the evening. Visit labattoir.ca to view the current Avant-Première menu. No payment is required upon booking, the menu cost of $80 plus tax and gratuity which are due at the restaurant. We request a credit card number to confirm all reservations, a $50 charge per person will be applied in the case of a cancellation or “no-show” within 24 hours of the reservation.

    Bopping place, great location in gastown, great ambiance, service was amazing - staff very well trained (i used to be in the industry). Food was excellent - very creative and a bit 'different' so it makes for a unique dining experience - the flavours were amazing, portions a good size ( i had anticipated them being small but they ended up being the perfect size at least for me!). I would definitely recommend this restaurant!

    Great place for special occasions. The servers are instructed to tell a little story about every meal (including desserts), which I found unnecessary and slightly annoying, but they were just doing their job, so I let it go :)

    Food was what we expected. It is not your typical restaurant as the taste was exquisite. Was very happy with the entire meal and dessert. Best way to end the night was the coffee, it wasn’t just a simple cup but an entire French press so I could enjoy it at the end of the night. Small things like this make the night special.

    Food and service were excellent. I would recommend this to anyone. We had the terrine to start and the Steak Diane was a treat. I’m terrible with names but the young lady whom took care of us was outstanding.

    Came here to celebrate a quiet but decadent engagement and we ate off the chef’s menu - highly recommend this place, ambiance was comfortable, the staff was very helpful with our requests to alter menu items due to allergies and even change a table arrangement so that I could sit next to my fianceé as opposed to across from her, and we thought the chef's menu was a great deal compared to 1-3 Michelin-starred restaurants we've been to. This made a special night much more so and I'm very grateful we chose L'Abattoir for this dinner.

    Great service from all of the staff, they were all very knowledgeable about the menu and could easily answer any questions we presented. Everything we ordered was delicious, including the items we chose but were unsure about ended up being outstanding. Definitely a gem of gastown.

    We ordered from the prix fix menu and we were not disappointed. The cocktail menu is very creative, and each menu item is very thoughtfully constructed. Everything was delicious and the service was top-notch. All of the staff was very knowledgeable and attentive. The albacore tuna was probably our favorite, but the trout was divine. Absolutely loved the quail, as well.

    Never a bad meal at L’abattoir. We enjoyed the chefs tasting menu with wine pairing and enjoyed every course. The staff is amazingly receptive and quite attentive even on a busy Saturday night. Going out for a meal with friends should be an enjoyable tasting and social experience and this night was indeed most enjoyable.

    Dining at L’abattoir was delightful! The Chef’s tasting menu was delicious. The unique BC wine pairings were very complimentary. Everyone in front of house were approachable and friendly. A special mention to Catherine, who kept the wines flowing. To Olivia, who kept the food coming, up all those stairs too. And of course to Prabeen, who was so attentive to all of our needs and provided some great conversation as well. A pleasure to meet everyone and a memorable dining experience. Thank you!

    The restaurant is too noisy for a $400 meal, also not enough lighting. The food was great, but the ambiance made it NOT a enjoyable experience. We had to yell to talk from across the small table. If we were to spend more than the average, I'd want to feel exclusive and peaceful while being able to talk intimately w my date/partner, and not yelling. The lack of lighting made my eyes so tired after a while, I thought I was drunk but as soon as I walked outside I realized it was because of the lighting.

    I had high hopes for L’Abattoir based on the menu, but was only cautiously optimistic because of some reviews on this site, and I’m glad my hopes weren’t too high. When we were seated, we were told there were two chef’s tasting menus left, so we should decide if we wanted that option or a la carte. Five minutes later, another couple was seated who immediately asked for and were given the last two remaining chef’s menus. Not a great look for the waitstaff service, but fine. We opted for a mix of mostly entrees and a main depending on how full we were. We also ordered two glasses of white wine, followed by a bottle. At least 6 other tables received their bread service before we received ours - it was about 25 minutes after we were seated and had ordered before we received any food. The bread was great, as was the “high end pizza cheese” that came with it. The wait time between our first pair of entrees and our second pair was at least another 20 minutes. In the meantime, the sommelier poured our white wine into my sparkling wine and barely apologized for the mistake. The wines we had, at the recommendation of the sommelier, paired reasonably well with our dishes. Of all the entrees we ordered, the baked oysters were the most disappointing. They were almost flavorless and just not that thrilling. The squid, hamachi, and foie were all far better. After we finally received our main, our plates were cleared, some time past, and our server finally wandered over to ask if we were ready for our bill. I asked to see the dessert menu, she said that they had booked a table right after us, and we couldn’t stay at our table to enjoy dessert. If we wanted dessert, we would need to move to the bar. Umm no, thank you, we will not be giving you any more money. Four hundred dollars for lazy service and not even dessert, because your kitchen was so slow and because you don’t have a solid understanding of your diners’ behaviors. Spend your money elsewhere, you deserve better.

    During our baby moon, my wife and I had the pleasure of dining at this restaurant, and it exceeded all expectations.     The food and ambiance were fantastic overall. However, the "sommelier" seemed a bit distant compared to the rest of the staff and not very helpful with the wines, and unfortunately, the Negroni I ordered wasn't that good. On the bright side, I had the Sablefish, and it was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend this dish to anyone who visits. We ended up paying about CAD 160 per person.

    Presentation was spectacular. The food taste was… weird. Not bad, but weird. Like the ingredients didn’t belong together. For example, the ricotta and cubed fruit in the pumpkin gnocchi didn’t pair well. Also, the weird acidity and spice from the sablefish sauce. But individually, the fish itself was good. Just bad flavor profiles.

    We had the Chef's menu with Premium wine pairing. The overall experience was good. Most of the dishes are very good, very tasty. Service is exceptional, A bit pricey in my opinion.

    As usual L’Abbatoir does not disappoint! My wife and I experienced excellent food and service. Although we no longer live in close proximity to Gastown, we will always make it a point to visit this establishment at least 4 times a year.

    One of the best dinners we’ve ever had. Matthew, our server was attentive to every detail. Andrew, the sommelier perfectly described all of the wines we had and the pairing with the food was outstanding. We enjoyed every one of the many dishes that we ordered. Really cannot say enough about the dinner. it simply was fantastic.

    Extremely nice place! Very romantic! Food tastes great! Outstanding service, especially the sommelier, who really, really knew his stuff. Would go back just for him.
