Located in historic Gastown between Gaoler's Mews and Blood Alley, built in the 19th century on the site of Vancouver's first jail and originally buttressed to the city's main butchery and meat packing district, the name L'Abattoir pays homage to the neighbourhood's colourful past. Set in a refurbished brick and beam building combining classic French tile work with industrial fixtures and natural wood, the restaurant offers a bar and lounge, elevated dining room and a plush, light soaked atrium as well as private dining rooms. Chef/Owner Lee Cooper is dedicated to highlighting the finer points of eating & drinking in L'Abattoir's informed but informal setting. Service is expertly orchestrated to be unpretentious yet refined. The French-influenced West Coast fare is paired with the eclectic wine program and the bar team's innovative cocktail list to offer a truly unique dining experience.

    Can't believe we've never come across this restaurant before. We came here to celebrate our 30 year anniversary and had The Gaoler's menu and have to say this was probably one of the most fantastic culinary experience we've ever had. The food was so complex with so many layers of flavours that it left us speechless with each bite we had. The presentation was beautiful and to top it off, Shaun and Andrew were phenomenal servers. We highly recommend you try the Gaoler's menu, it won't disappoint.

    What a great evening - our server and sommelier were excellent and informed, and gave us just the right amount of attention along with knowledgable suggestions. The food, especially the scallops, baked oysters, duck and halibut were top notch, distinctive , and the desserts brought it home in style. A special night, we will be back. Oh and the cocktails were good too!

    This was my first visit to this restaurant. We did the tasting menu. We added on the wine pairings. Both were phenomenal. By the time we were halfway through, we couldn’t finish our plates! We will definitely come back again.

    Had a fantastic time at L’Abattoir over the weekend and was impressed on all counts from food to service. I unfortunately couldn’t partake in the Gaoler’s menu as I can’t do fish and they didn’t allow substitutions (which I totally understand based on the menu), but I was just as happy to order a la carte! The bread basket provided was also fantastic - I’d get a basket full of the anchovie twist bread and be perfectly happy munching away haha flaky, chewie, crispy and savoury. We got the terrine and scallops to start and both were delicious. The little toast/crostini that came with terrine is exactly how I love toast to be - crispy, but light with a chew and it was the perfect vessel for the foie gras and the other elements. I particularly enjoyed the white wine jelly. The scallops were my fave out of the two starters, the ginger and pineapple worked amazingly together, was a refreshing take on seared scallops, and the pumpkin seed gave the dish great texture. Mains were the pork belly which was OUSTANDING. The server helped me choose between it and the steak diane and I was so happy with the choice. It was the morels in the end that sold me and they worked beautifully in the dish. The pork itself was good, some fatty pieces, but it was pork belly and I expected that. The other main, the halibut I unfortunately couldn’t try, but it LOOKED delicious and my friend really enjoyed it. Desserts were the brûléed carrot cake (SO GOOD) - We got a great port pairing for it from the sommelier as well, and the rhubarb(?) mousse off the gaolers menu which was tangy, refreshing and was graciously made for us despite us not being on the menu. Cocktails time! I got the Kumquat Collins which will forever be a go to for anyone looking for a refreshing start to a meal, then I tried the President-Elect which was strong (in a good way) and perfectly bitter. Then I did their daily concoction (did you know they create a custom cocktail for EVERY SERVICE? Props to the mixologist!)

    Nonstandard in preparation and presentation. Some items missed the mark. Foie gras was very salty and some sauces did not complement the food. Wine selection is very good and pamesan bread was excellent. Service is first-rate.

    Fabulous evening. Wow what a treat the tasting menu was! Nine delicious courses spaciously spread so we didn’t feel too stuffed. The back alley alcove is quiet and very cozy. Treat yourself with the tasting menu - well worth it. Great experience.

    Incredible food! We had sablefish, char, pork and halibut and it was the best French style food I’ve had in years (and I live in Charleston,SC)! They played an older style of rap music and we were right under the speaker, we finally asked them to turn it down. Expensive but delicious!!! Amazing wine list! I made a reservation a month in advance!

    Not good. The tasting and ingredients of the food is just so so, but the price of tasting menu is above the average. There’re so many restaurants in Vancouver have the better tasting menu with the lower price. The dining environment is noisy, and I cannot hear what my friends said when sitting opposite.

    The food was well crafted but fell flat in too many ways. Scallops, fish and prawns all tasted too bland/watery. Beetroots in the carpaccio could have used to be marinated or have more dressing. The restaurant got quite a lot noisier when things got busy, and it became difficult to get the staff’s attention. Overall it’s a good restaurant, but for the price I’ve been able to find better.

    The food was really tasty and they were good at accommodating our allergens (gluten and dairy free), but were v limited options and just removed items rather than making adaptions so dishes weren’t fully balanced. What we did have was super tasty though and the sommelier gave us some great recommendations for the winery’s to go to next when we go to Okangan
