Easily the best restaurant in the Halifax area (and likely Nova Scotia) for really serious food served in a decidedly not serious venue. Always serving seasonal food, classically prepared in casual comfortable format. SO.FRIGGIN.GOOD! I skipped the special “Crobster roll”, which is tough to skip, and had the smoked pork chop. Honestly, words can’t do it justice. My gf had the steak frites which is always such an easy example of how to keep things simple and yet, INCREDIBLE! Always sad to not have all of the other dishes!! Thank you Canteen. Will be back soon and often!!!

We were seated at their dockside patio facing the harbour underneath a set of heat lamps. The atmosphere and views were wonderful. We had two cocktails, the crystal crescent and the cove. Highly recommend the cove as a starter cocktail. We split the kale caesar salad, which was quite good and a decent size portion considering the size of our entrées. I had the haddock fish and chips, which was incredible, some of the best I've ever had, and very good considering we are spoiled with fresh halibut on the west coast. My wife had the rum and maple roasted cod. We thought the dish was cooked well, but the rum and maple flavour did not come through enough for us. Overall, we felt that this dish could have been seasoned more. We requested salt, and this improved the dish. A solid experience overall and definitely worth a visit!
