Market Place Tavern is the latest concept and restaurant for Market Hospitality Group (MHG). The Tavern which overlooks the Litchfield Green, is the oldest public building in town and one of the oldest penal facilities in the state. It was built in 1812 to serve as a jail for British prisoners during the War of 1812. A cell block and a three-story wing with additional cell blocks, which now is part of the restaurant’s bar area, was added in 1846. The jail closed in 1992 and was used as a treatment center for men serving prison sentences. It shut down again in 1993 and reopened in 1994 as a rehabilitation center for women facing incarceration. When that center closed, the state decided to sell it.The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and features “American Tavern Food” with Craft Beers and Cocktails made with local spirits.     Previously a jail house. The ambiance is pretty unique and interesting. Food was very good but vegetables were very undercooked. Our server was one of the nicest and most pleasant young ladies we have experienced in awhile. The bill was reasonable for a family of 5. We will be back.

    Gina greeted me warmly recognizing that I had a reservations; which then delighted me that she was also going to be our server. She ensured that we had a quiet table since there was going to be a large group arriving. We talked about my takeout portion of the order; and, shortly my friend arrived. My Apple salad was wonderful as always; my friend sandwich warm and full of good meats. We both had takeouts — my penne ala vodka full of chicken and delicious for dinner that night and several more to come. Her Greek salad with chicken excellent! Another wonderful lunch at DaCapo’s with an excellent server: Gina!
