Le Chien Noir Ratings and Reviews
Typically love this restaurant, have gone many times over the years.
Saturday night was an exception; very poor service - if i am going to splurge on champagen and oysters (which Chien Noir have the best in this area) it would make sense to bring them at the same time. Our table was right in front of the dishwasher - not the greatest ambience. My girlfriend has the steak frites; worst piece of steak ever delivered at a restaurant.
Will make sure future reservations include - do not put me at the dishwasher location otherwise dont take my reservation.
Let me preface this with the fact that I have not sent food back in the last 17 years. This is the first time I have felt obliged to review any restaurant.
The place looked very nice, but when we arrived for our 8PM reservation we had to wait another 15 minutes. *cue the Jerry Seinfeld reservation holding debate*.
We ordered drinks at the bar but then were quickly moved to our table. For some reason, the drinks took about 20 minutes to bring over.
After having ordered, we waiting over an hour for our appetizers which were oysters and raw fish which do not require much prep/cooking time. The oysters were good. The yellow fin tuna tartare was the worst fish ceviche I have ever had. It was completely tasteless and thrown onto a plate as if it were leftovers with half a stale, sad cracker.
Now an hour and a half into our meal our mains arrived. We ordered the mussels and frites and the House parpadelle. I wish I had photos to share. The pasta was way too over cooked and was all stuck together. The scallops and shrimp looked paler than someone on their death bed and can only be described as tiny frozen faux seafood, from the look of it. It was topped with canned peeled tomatoes of which I noticed the nub of the tomatoes in.
The total price for our meal was $97 (had we not returned items). I felt insulted when I saw that price for what we received. Especially given that this is a student town- people should be getting quality for their food on their nights out. Although our waitress did understand and took back the 2 items and took them off our bill, it was very uncomfortable to be put in a situation where we had to return 2 plates of food during the same meal on a date.
My two cents. Just no care was put into the food whatsoever. Very disappointing. Many great restaurants in Kingston, will not be returning here again.
Mixed experiences in this restaurant. The last two the food has been poor and cold with a long wait.
I gave it another try.
I won’t be back.
Always a great night out. New menu looks good. The Coq Au Vin was delicious!
Increadible food - the duck confit surpassed expectations. Will definitely be going back.
Absolutely delicious. Each entree - fish, seafood, lamb, and chicken was well presented, fragrant, we'll prepared, and offered a range of texture and flavour. good portions, filling.
Been here many times before and the food and service have generally been good. Most recent visit (Dec27th 2017) the service was very poor. Waited over an hour for our meals to arrive. Wasn't that busy and we were a party of 5. Couple seated next to us (and after us) had finished their meals before ours arrived. Waitress was oblivious. My meal arrived cold (probably sat under a lamp for 30 min). Others were hot. I chalk this up to new and perhaps inexperienced wait staff. Nevertheless a disappointing experience. Would probably hit Olivea or Casa or Chez Piggy before I consider returning.
The food was excellent and the staff were friendly and helpful.
Very enjoyable. We have never been before but well worth it.
My sister was home from BC and we wanted a special meal out and Chien was perfect. We enjoyed a great bottle of wine, great food and a comfortable table for quiet conversation.
Had the French onion soup, but it was surprisingly not flavourful and the ratio of onion to cheese and broth was off. The duck was cooked very well, but the sides were incredibly disappointing. A large portion of bland mashed potato and unseasoned cooked Brussel sprouts. The food was not worth the price. If you are looking for high end French cuisine look elsewhere.
We used to eat here two to three times per year, but this was our first time with their new chef. Some of our meal was quite good, but not outstanding as it used to be. My main was over cooked and they forgot to serve it properly (they brought out sauce later because they must have forgotten it in preparation).
Service was fine (not great) but there was one instance when the hostess greeted a party at the door but their table was not yet ready. They spoke rudely about the people that had not left their table yet and discussed ways to make them uncomfortable so they would leave. Joking I am sure, but didn't make me feel welcome to enjoy my time there.
Went for Christmas lunch with friend ,staff friendly and helpful suggesting menu options.Had the special with couscous and chick peas very tasty and something different.Nice wine selection. Will definitely go again for dinner as the menu has changed and looks very interesting.
Amazing as always!
wonderful dinner pre Christmas getaway from Toronto
Our party of 7 along with our service dog had a lovely brunch! It was delicious and the service we received was outstanding!
For a long time Chien Noir has been I think the most consistently excellent restaurant in Kingston. It’s restrained menu wasn’t strong on attractive vegetarian options, though. Everything we had on the new menu was wonderful, and we noticed the vegetarian options were much more enticing, not what you’d make at home, though we didn’t try them out yet.
Great food, great service and great spot for a date.
Always a fantastic meal here - this is my go-to place for catching up with friends over a good dinner and drinks. Sat at the bar and savoured an old favourite - the steak frites. Highly recommend Chien Noir.
I enjoy Le Chien Noir. The food is always of high quality--the service is really exceptional. It is one of my favourite places to eat in Kingston. I like to bring visitors to Le Chien Noir.
Had a lovely time at Chien Noir! Great services, outstanding food and lovely ambiance. I had the french onion soup, and the creme brulée.
Wish you would bring back the veal cheeks Putine! Thought it’s now an expensive dish; price has tripled over the years - used to have it once a week.
The two way duck Saturday was delicious; unfortunately the duck breast was cold (as if almost coming out of the fridge) and the thigh was lukewarm like the veggies on the plate - that was disappointing.
We had a 7:30pm show at the Grand, and couldn't get a 6pm reservation, so took a 5:30pm slot thinking we'd have way too much time. As it turned out, we had no time to spare.
We arrived on time, and were seated. Ordered wine/beer, appetizer and dinner. It was 40 minutes before the appetizer arrived, and we ended up ordering a second drink.
The charcuterie was really (REALLY) good! Highly recommend it. Meats from Seed to Sausage and regional cheeses. The Italian pinot grigio was good as well.
The pasta . . . not so much. I didn't eat half of a small serving. It was elbow macaroni and was supposed to have chicken, but it had an overpowering taste of tuna, which I dislike. My husband ate all of his larger size serving, but agreed it tasted like tuna (he likes tuna), and later described it as typical dry tuna casserole from childhood.
The service was slow. The main was disappointing. Spent $125 with tip.
the staff were attentive - we thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the chef's table
Great food and service as always. One of my favourite places in Kingston.
Terrible service and food was mediocre so it is not clear it was so packed. Despite making reservations 3 weeks in advance, we were given the worst table in the place and largely ignored by the waitstaff. The specials menu was a mystery as nothing appeared to be as advertised and waitstaff did not appear to know anything about the menu. We knew from reading the reviews that there would be a long wait for food to appear so that was not a surprise. Disappointing particularly since our previous experience there, 2 years ago, was pleasant with good service and delicious food. Not worth the wait.
Excellent quality food all around with cosy atmosphere
I have eaten at Le Chien Noir several times, and as a pescatarian I was particularly thrilled this time to see the many added items on the menu that were either fish-based, or straight vegetarian. The food has always been good and there have been options for my choice, but now it is truly superb.
My three companions all had various different meat options and enjoyed them all. The service is excellent, and the ambiance comfortable and attractive. I particularly like the banquette seating as opposed to being in the centre of the restaurant: the sound can be a little much in the centre, so the edge seating is preferable for me.
I will return when I can -- such a great experience!
The ambiance was very nice but the food was less than mediocre.
Just a touch below customary excellence. 2 out of 5 muscles just an empty shell.
Don’t like how they put us in the back. The temperature was cold. We asked to move. We sat where they bring the dirty dishes to be washed. The food was good but we won’t go back.
Service and ambiance quite good. Charcuterie & Cheese appetizer excellent. Arctic Char very good. Special of the day Schnitzel, just ok. Pasta bucatini dish not so good, I think they forgot the sauce, very dry.
It was a very nice evening. The staff were very pleasant and knowledgeable around their menu.
Food was very good
Simply one of the best in Kingston. Really enjoyed the quiet setting. Fabulous meal and very tasty.
The food was as we wanted, the waitress friendly and competent ,a good selection of wine and single malt scotch. Thanks for a great evening.
This place got me laid, the food was fantastic and I loved every moment of it.
Food was good but cold. The server was lovely but the service was extemely slow. Restaurant was freezing almost like a door had been left open. Don’t think I’d go back.
The luncheon food (burgers, omelette) was uninspiring. It was okay, but nothing special and no reason to return. Two of the three diners did not finish their plate. The waiter got one of the three orders wrong. Lots of other places to choose from . . . won't be back.
Came highly recommended and location, ambience and food were terrific. We arrived for 11:30 brunch and were promptly seated and orders taken. Restaurant very busy as it was Homecoming weekend at Queens and reservations a must. Understand it's recommended most of the time as it is popular and not huge. Our meals were great when they arrived but wait was long. We luckily were visiting and had lots to chat about to fill the time but brunch did take 2 hours. Food obviously hand crafted and was worth the while but best to heed warnings of other reviews that patience might be required but it's worth it.
