Le Chien Noir Ratings and Reviews
the staff were attentive - we thoroughly enjoyed the evening and the chef's table
Great food and service as always. One of my favourite places in Kingston.
Terrible service and food was mediocre so it is not clear it was so packed. Despite making reservations 3 weeks in advance, we were given the worst table in the place and largely ignored by the waitstaff. The specials menu was a mystery as nothing appeared to be as advertised and waitstaff did not appear to know anything about the menu. We knew from reading the reviews that there would be a long wait for food to appear so that was not a surprise. Disappointing particularly since our previous experience there, 2 years ago, was pleasant with good service and delicious food. Not worth the wait.
Excellent quality food all around with cosy atmosphere
I have eaten at Le Chien Noir several times, and as a pescatarian I was particularly thrilled this time to see the many added items on the menu that were either fish-based, or straight vegetarian. The food has always been good and there have been options for my choice, but now it is truly superb.
My three companions all had various different meat options and enjoyed them all. The service is excellent, and the ambiance comfortable and attractive. I particularly like the banquette seating as opposed to being in the centre of the restaurant: the sound can be a little much in the centre, so the edge seating is preferable for me.
I will return when I can -- such a great experience!
The ambiance was very nice but the food was less than mediocre.
Just a touch below customary excellence. 2 out of 5 muscles just an empty shell.
Don’t like how they put us in the back. The temperature was cold. We asked to move. We sat where they bring the dirty dishes to be washed. The food was good but we won’t go back.
Service and ambiance quite good. Charcuterie & Cheese appetizer excellent. Arctic Char very good. Special of the day Schnitzel, just ok. Pasta bucatini dish not so good, I think they forgot the sauce, very dry.
It was a very nice evening. The staff were very pleasant and knowledgeable around their menu.
Food was very good
Simply one of the best in Kingston. Really enjoyed the quiet setting. Fabulous meal and very tasty.
The food was as we wanted, the waitress friendly and competent ,a good selection of wine and single malt scotch. Thanks for a great evening.
This place got me laid, the food was fantastic and I loved every moment of it.
Food was good but cold. The server was lovely but the service was extemely slow. Restaurant was freezing almost like a door had been left open. Don’t think I’d go back.
The luncheon food (burgers, omelette) was uninspiring. It was okay, but nothing special and no reason to return. Two of the three diners did not finish their plate. The waiter got one of the three orders wrong. Lots of other places to choose from . . . won't be back.
Came highly recommended and location, ambience and food were terrific. We arrived for 11:30 brunch and were promptly seated and orders taken. Restaurant very busy as it was Homecoming weekend at Queens and reservations a must. Understand it's recommended most of the time as it is popular and not huge. Our meals were great when they arrived but wait was long. We luckily were visiting and had lots to chat about to fill the time but brunch did take 2 hours. Food obviously hand crafted and was worth the while but best to heed warnings of other reviews that patience might be required but it's worth it.
Awesome dinner, as usual. The quality of dining experience is reliable.
The restaurant has charm with the old stonework of downtown Kingston. Our server was friendly, professional and knowledgeable of the the menu. We were in town between Ottawa and Toronto for a stag.
We made a reservation and they prepared the best seat in the house for us. We were there for Saturday lunch and everything went well.
Looking back I would definitely recommend this restaurtant to everyone since the service and food was stellar and they have a menu to cater to a diverse range of tastes and wallet sizes.
Job well done! It was my pleasure to write a review.
Wonderful meal! Highly recommended
Excellent food and service, as usual. One of our favourite places in Kingston.
Meat cooked to specific instructions - was excellent
We always dine here every time we come to Kingston. beautiful atmosphere and cozy booths as well as a beautiful back courtyard for romantic outdoor dining.
Always creative and delicious food.
Food was great. We three ordered various items from the Sharing Plates to make a communal meal. The Oysters were fresh and satisfying, the Vietnamese paté, tuna tartar and the Champignons delish as was everything else we had! Wanted to sit on front patio but were seated in backyard patio, which has an ambiance of its own. Really loved the vibe. Our server was enthusiastic, knowledgeable and seemed to work effortlessly to accommodate our requests and answer our many questions about items on the menu. Well worth the visit and will be back on the next trip to Kingston.
The food was great, but the service was almost non existent after our appetizers arrived.
Excellent lunch on the rear patio which is lovely with flowers and an awning. Our server was busy but took good care of our table. Appreciated that we were allowed to sit and visit after the meal. Will be back for sure.
Loved the vegan burger!!! I was so happy that they had this option.
While I have eaten at this restaurant several times before and had a positive experience, my most recent visit was disappointing. While the server was very pleasant, the service was very slow, especially the time it took to get our mains. The restaurant was not busy so it was odd that it took so long to get our meals on the table. We were considering getting another bottle of wine with dinner, but by the time our server came back to take our order we had essentially eaten our meals. Getting our bill and the paying for dinner also took more time than usual.
Food was pretty good but the service ruined it. Service was so slow. Either stagger your reservations if the kitchen cannot handle the orders or shrink your restaurant. I will not be returning.
We had not been to Le Chien Noir in quite some time so decided to give it a try. It is unlikely we will return. The timing of the meal was very poor. We waited a very long time for our appetizers and then our main course arrived before we had finished our appetizers so we sent them back. My steak was overdone and my husband's meal was cold so we sent them back again. When the food finally arrived it was very good but didn't make up for the generally disappointing experience. To the credit of the restaurant, we were offered a complimentary drink.
Food was delicious, service and atmosphere were good, wait for food was 1hr and 20 mins which was too long for a hungry couple; we didn't know the wait would be that long. The food was lovely though!
I have been at this restaurant 3times before. It was the first time I was disappointed. They ran out of the featured appetizer by 7pm. We waited 45 minutes between the time we finished our appetizers and received our main course. However we had a nice table, our server was attentive and he knew about the food allergy we had mentioned at the time we made the reservation. The table next to us returned their steak frites because they were cold. Won't be my first choice next trip to Kingston
First of all, Kingston, Ontario, is a charming surprise. A college town on Lake Ontario, and the original capital of Canada (!), with a commercial district/waterfront that is enjoying a renaissance, Kingston has some scruffy corners but much more frequently charms with lovely old homes, beautiful waterfront, and a revitalized downtown. If you're traveling to or from Canada, stay overnight at Kingston along the way - it's minutes from the dramatic Thousand Islands border crossing and hours from the frenetic hustle bustle of Toronto and Niagra Falls.
Now, on to Le Chien Noir! This is a fun bistro with three distinct parts in warm weather months. The street front patio is just a step off of the vibrant downtown restaurant/arts neighborhood. Lots of energy to soak in while you relax. Inside is the bar and tables, some of them big. This a great place for groups to gather and make merry. Out back is quiet garden patio if you want quiet conversation and calm. What all three areas have in common is the good food and drink. Dinner offerings are well prepared and presented, often with the kind of nice touches that make, say, some roast chicken into a memorable Chicken Pallard. There are lots of choices for wine, beer, and liquor, and the local wines on tap (!) provide the happy opportunity to enjoy fresh, local, and delicious Ontario wines. This was a truly pleasant surprise for this east coast American. Ontario is producing some really good wine. So...
I say cross the border at the the Thousand Islands, stay the night in Kingston, and be sure to dine at Le Chen Noir!
Great place to eat, our server was fantastic! He took care of us really well, couldn't have asked for better service, also the Cider Sangria was excellent.
Good plus overall
Great service and atmosphere for the Kingston Blues-Fest Sunday Brunch!
We are from out if town and heard good things prior to making our reservation. started with a mushroom appetizer. Chicken was roasted to perfection and curry was light and fruity. We booked a little earlier in the evening but didn't feel rushed as the service ramped up with the incoming crowd.
Great experience at Le Chien Noir on our wedding anniversary.
Out waitress was wonderful and very attentive. The duck wings were a plentiful appetizer and a special treat. The evening special, Veal chop was cooked perfectly and delicious, complimented by grilled root veggies. Espresso, Sambuca and delicious chocolate cake provided a grand finale. Great ambience for out door dining. Reservations only for indoors.
This was our second visit to this bistro. We were in Kingston for a few days and wanted to come back here. The food is very good. Service was not fast but we were not in a hurry so the service was okay with us. I would recommend this restaurant.
