Steak was under done. It was replaced no questions and was excellent then
Our favorite place for lunch in Kingston. The back patio is delightful - lots of shade. The menu is Nicole adventurous.
The food was fantastic! The service was slow, had to pour our own wine, an hour before we were served bread, we expect better service at this price point.
When travelling between Montreal and Toronto that is our proverbial pit stop. Always enjoyed it.
The dining room lights kept flickering and it was as hot as a sauna in there (to be fair there was a heat wave in Ontario) but the food was good and the service was as well.
Excellent food, especially enjoyed the great selection of appetizers/small plates!! Great service too!!
I made the reservation with a request for a table on the back patio... the website does not indicate that they don't offer patio reservations so we were disappointed when offered a table smack in the middle of the dining room. They moved us to a booth and we were given free espresso with baileys at the end of our meal as an apology. The food and service was great. My only suggestion is to make the reservation rules and limitations more clear on the website.
Seems the kitchen got backed up the night we were there. Took 2 hrs before our main came and when it did it was dry. The manager was quick to correct the issue though which definitely won them back points. Good pentential for a great experience we just didnt get them on a good night.
Skip our waitress was awesome. Super friendly. Great service and food. Lovely night
Food and service were excellent (tuna tartare was delicious). The dessert was a bit dry (chocolate tart). Very welcoming even for families with young children.
Everything was great. The service was efficient and personable, the menu was eclectic, and the drinks list was extensive. We sat in the courtyard, and was lovely fir outdoor summer dining. The food was delicious (my partner and I shared a 3-item charcuterie board to start; he had the burger, I had the mussels), and his well/garnished Caesar was really tasty while my wine paired well with everything. It was a tad on the expensive side, and the wine markup was high... However, I would still recommend! 4.5 stars :)
Very nice restaurant!
Menu is attractive by the diversity of food!
Very nice service, very friendly
There was an issue with one of our orders which was handled most graciously and professionally...The ambiance was very welcoming, casual French. Menu had something wonderful for everyone. I was visiting from Miami, so this meal had to count...if you know what I mean :)
Photo: Chien Noir Scramble with duck confit and brie.
Portions are very small and not worth the money. French fries burnt and low quality. Lobster roll was tiny! Will never go again.
Great place ...............................................................................................adsfasdfasdfasdf
One word....phenomenal!! The food, the service, the ambiance all rolled into a great experience!
I have for many years considered Le Chien Noir to be one of Kingston's better restaurants for food quality and value. Unfortunately our experience with friends on July 19 missed the mark on that expectation. We sat in the back courtyard, which has lovely ambiance, but things slid downhill from there. First, the service was slow after we placed our orders. Not only was the food somewhat slow arriving, but the dish removal, offer of coffee and desert, and delivering the bill, got progressively slower. Our server apologized (it wasn't her fault) and said it had been "quiet", so one of the other servers was sent home. Given that we were there early (a 5:30pm reservation), one might question why that decision was made so soon in the evening.
The second issue was my main course. I ordered the "rack of lamb", which I haven't had for some time and was really looking forward to. For $39, I expected a full rack with 6-8 ribs. I was very disappointed to have my plate delivered with barely a half-rack serving. There were only 3 ribs; one single rib cut and one double rib cut. The double had been sliced off at a declining angle, leaving the meaty portion almost as thin as the single rib portion. About 6 small bites and a bit of bone nibbling later, I was finished, wishing for the rest of the rack. The meat was nicely seasoned and properly cooked, but it should have been advertised as a half-rack, especially given the $39 charge.
I should have questioned the serving size at the time, but with friends along it didn't feel like the right place and time to raise the issue.
While the food was tasty and the ambiance was nice, the service and undersized serving were disappointing. I realize restaurants can have "off" nights, but to serve 3 small lamb ribs and call it a rack is inappropriate, especially at such a high price. Perhaps it was a kitchen error, and I would still recommend LCN to others, but for now it will be a somewhat cautious recommendation.
i ordered the mussel and the french fries, which were very good, although a small portion. The waiter forgot the french fries and only brought them out quite late (they were free then at least)
The chicken and the lamb very very good, although the lamb was a small portion also
great service, good menu and good atmosphere
Not a lot of gluten fee choices
It was a wonderful experience. The food was great, as usual and the service was exceptional. Always a pleasure to go there.
A very pleasant evening at Chien Noir, just before we caught the Corteo show at the Leon's Centre. Service and food were very good, as always. We opted to sit on the back patio but the table we had was located under what appeared to be an air conditioning vent. When it kicked it, it was distracting and a tad hard to hear. Had there been other tables for two available we would have asked to move and there was no sense asking that it be turned off as it then would have adversely affected the diners inside and we're not complainers about things that can't really be controlled. Suggest that perhaps this table just be removed. Otherwise a most enjoyable time, and this was a minor issue. Food was great and our server top notch!
Great food. Very nice back patio. The wait for food (even just the bread at the beginning) was a little longer than expected.
We had a 7:45 reservation. When we arrived we were told it would be another 10 minutes for our table to be ready. At 8:10 another couple arrived and were given a table immediately. We approached the person at the front and were told that our table still wasn't ready. Why weren't we given the available table that was open since we arrived? We were told that was their table and we had to wait for ours.
The food was only average. We were expecting much more than that.
We definitely won't be returning. We have had much better service and meals at other Kingston restaurants.
The sirloin steak is out of this world!!! I recommend it strongly to celebrate an anniversary!
Always fantastic food! All five people at the table were very happy with their meals.
My biggest issue was with our service. We got seated quickly however we waited on my opinion too long for a drink order. A table was seated beside us after our drink order was taken yet they received a bottle of champagne before our draft beer?
The other thing we noticed is that table was explained the specials and was given recommendations yet we were merely were asked if we knew what we would like to order.
I work in customer service so I tend to pay a bit more attention to that piece and for this I unfortunately won't be back.
Annual trip to Kingston, get a way.
Very impressed on my 1st visit. Food was excellent. Going to go back one more time next month to try something different on the menu.
It was an overcast day but we started outside under an umbrella, moving into a more protected spot once the rains seriously began. What a terrific choice for those who eat fish, like me, but not meat. I had a delicious lobster roll and one of my companions had the same, with half salad, half frites as a side. Clever! This was offered by the most kind wait staff who put up with our constant chatter and inability to order for ages. The third member of our party had a delicious tuna main course and all of us were very pleased with our meals. The verandah at the back of the restaurant is quiet and private, which we enjoyed. The front verandah is right on Brock Street, which some people enjoy for the activity and buzz. But it's nice to know that one has options. Inside it's always lovely and the decor - as usual - a great bistro experience.
This wAs a great experience. Love this place.
Oysters are incredible. Good wine selection. Sandwiches are delicious. Omg the baguette with orange butter in the bread basket is divine. We found this gem on a Friday while stopping through Kingston and had to return on our way back to NY on Sunday because it's that good!
It was just okay. The specials were not listed appropriately. Ordered the quail thinking it was a full meal, it was an appetizer. A very small, unimpressive appetizer.
Service was poor and food for the price was not great - expensive at the price
Will not be back .
Fabulous! Highly recommended. Great selection - very generous portions , lovely wine and fabulous service.
Must visit in Kingston
Excellent food and exceptional service. Fantastic atmosphere. Will definitely be back next time we are in Kingston.
Have been here several times over the years and the service and food has always been some of the best I have ever experienced. Beats any restaurant I have ever dined in in Toronto and Vancouver. It’s simply a small well run, restaurant that you can tell puts a lot of value on service as well as a lot of thought and effort into their food. Just sad that I don’t get to Kingston more often to eat here!
Excellent meal, excellent service. Good size wine list and interesting menu. Wasn’t sure after reading some recent reviews on Trip Advisor, but was so pleased. Will definitely go again.
Always an excellent drop in to chien noir - best bistro in Eastern Ontario!
Our party of 7 enjoyed dinner on the patio. There was something on the menu for everyone. We chose a steak special, a crab leg special, the perfectly cooked duck entree, and the flat iron steak frites. The food was delicious, classic French bistro fare. Portions were generous yet light enough that none of us left feeling overly full. We will definitely return!
We purposely booked for an early dinner so we would have lots of time to talk. Our server was attentive and gave us the great suggestion to turn over our menus when we were ready to order so we were not rushed and she didn't need to keep checking on us that we were ready. The only criticism through the whole meal was the entrees not coming to the table as hot as they could have been. Great wine list, lots of choices even for vegetarians.
Our server was new to the restaurant and was not familiar with the menu or servicing diners. The air conditioner dripped condensate onto our table which the manager did offer to move us to another table. The duck confit was overcooked and the roasted carrots were charred. The $19 Small Plate of seared scallops (2 total) on a bed of beans was tasty but way overpriced.
