The service was excellent and it was a beautiful day so we sat on the patio. It was quite windy and the awning creaked quite a bit and the traffic was noisy but I guess this is all part of the patio experience. We had a lovely lunch in spite of this.
Nice place to linger over brunch.
We were a table of five - with one child.
The service was accommodating and efficient.
The food was delicious.
I love Chien Noir.
We have celebrated many family occasions there, it’s definitely in our top three in Kingston. However......last Friday we entertained two friends from Toronto and were truly underwhelmed. We ate inside and felt as though we were an afterthought most of the evening.
Four at our table and our drink order trickled in one at a time over more than 10 minutes. The only beer ordered was flat. Our main courses were all very good, thankfully.
Our server was very pleasant but not really 100% there.
I guess I was most disappointed because I had sung the praises of Chien Noir and had chosen the restaurant over others.
From the moment we arrived and were greeted by the hostess our experience was as good as when we were at Le Chien Noir five years ago. Our server was friendly and efficient. I had the lamb which was done to perfection and my husband had the Risotto which he enjoyed.
Will look forward to our next visit to Kingston and this delightful restaurant.
Was my wife’s Birthday. Had friends from St. Louis and Toronto with us to celebrate. We enjoyed the back patio! Service was great. Wife had issues with the muscles (last plate for the night, Muscles were not to the normal standard) and the team at the restaurant were awesome and corrected the issue. Love the care and will encourage folks to visit and can’t wait to go back again. Oh ya my wife was treated to a Birthday dessert too! Blessed
Love the food ,the service and the atmosphere. We went all out with charcuterie, wine , main course , dessert and coffee. The service was second to none. It was quiet at 5pm on a Friday . Have yet to be disappointed.
Disappointed about the quality of food for the price of the meal. Ordered the steak and frites, steak was dry and frites were soaky, had creme brulee and the custard was like liquid and seemed not fully cooked yet.
Very nice guiet and comfortable patio. Very enjoyable.
The service was fairly slow and one order was incorrect and the waitress was not very pleasant however they did resolve the problem. Overall, meal was great.
We were seat d promptly and offered drinks. I ordered poutine —. Sooo good. My husband had beef tenderloin - very tasty!! The portions were good. We left with full bellies, and passed on dessert.
Always a favorite whenever we visit Kingston!
Our experience was amazing from the second we walked in the door. Our server Skye was amazing! Food was delicious and atmosphere was so wonderful. Can’t wait to visit again.
The only complaints that I have was that it was one of our guest birthday which I stated I the online reservation as well as mentioned to the waitress and there was no other mention of of it or anything done for it by the staff.
Also we ordered the charcuterie board which was very disappointing in appearance and presentation for the amount of money spent on the board.
The octopus serving was almost funny. My husband ordered with a full salad and left quite hungry. Otherwise fantastic flavours and cocktails.
Waited over 45 minutes for meal, too long. Steak was not medium rare was medium at best. Not a sensible amount of butter to bread ratio had to ration it so everyone could get some with all the bread and very upset to see the octopus show up with two skinny end tentacles and both chard. Very disappointed in the Octopus mostly as it was quite expensive and not worth that price. The atmosphere was not reflective of a restaurant that boasts fine French food and $200.00 for two adults and a kid with only one appetizer is not good. Would not recommend going and wouldn’t go again.
Food, service and ambiance was fantastic as always. I hadn't been to Chien Noir in a number of years, and it was just as amazing as it was then.
Service was very slow...busy night but our server was very pleasant and helpful! There just wasn’t enough staff. Live music on next patio which we hadn’t anticipated so a little loud. Some of the food was cold but once again our server was moving as fast as she could. Overall our experiences at this restaurant are good
Nous avons été étonnés par la qualité de la cuisine pour un prix raisonnable, l'accueil et le service ont été parfaits. Thumbs up!
Amazing food and service was too notch. Great specials and drinks were great. I will be back again 100%
Extremely slow service when the restaurant wasn’t very busy. In total we had 3 different staff members take orders and deliver food/drinks. 15 minutes to get drinks and another 30 for apps. The system was clearly not working.
The shrimp appetizer was delicious, but my steak was slightly over when I wanted it medium rare. My mashed potatoes were dry and my wife’s halibut meal was inedible as it was extremely dry. The table beside us got the halibut as well and found it to be over done.
Our table was at the very front of the restaurant and placed in between two other tables. The waiter for the other table would have his rear end almost on my plate when he would take orders and this occurred throughout the meal. This made me quite frustrated.
We didn’t have to pay for the halibut meal, but it did make for a lacklustre date night.
Overall our bill was 118 and not nearly worth it.
Travelled to Kingston to celebrate our anniversary with a great meal at Le Chien Noir. Service was fantastic. It was busy and quite loud so we were very happy to have a table at the back! Definitely would recommend this spot!
Chien Noir is a great bistro in downtown Kingston perfect for a night out as a couple or small group. We had the Prix Fixe - one Steak Frites and one Mussels. Both were very good. The wine list offers a good selection. On a Saturday night the place is hopping. The main dining room may be a bit crowded for some tastes.
Our server was fabulous!
Lovely dinner with my parents and children. Great food and even the kids’ menu was very good. Excellent service. Will definitely be back.
Our “go-to” restaurant for special occasions. Reliably great food and friendly service.
Small portions for the price, but great flavour and presentation
We had a great lunch to celebrate a graduation. The server was absolutely lovely and the food was delicious.
Good food. Happy to see there were some plant based options.
We had a nice time though because I made the reservation at least a month prior and the restaurant was nearly empty when we arrived, I would have preferred a better table than the one next to the kitchen/bathroom door. Further, it took a long time between courses and the restaurant was quite cold. I did think the menu offered lots of choice and my chicken was excellent.
First visit, family of four adults sat in a booth, a little tight fit if you are not a small person but cozy. The restaurant was very busy and there was a lot of chatter but manageable. The ambiance is very nice, very Bistro which is what it should be. Great menu, the only problem is trying to pick from all the lovely choices. We shared a poutine, it was excellent, one daughter had the tuna Niçoise salad, very inhaled every bite, other one had the chicken, she wished she had the tuna, the chicken was a bit underdone.
Spouse had the liver and raved about it and I enjoyed the lamb, it was perfect. Veggies are respected and cooked properly for the mains which is not always the case.
All in all a very good experience, and I can recommend it easily.
Lovely prix fixe dinner. Unfortunately, there was no pâté en croute that night.
Will just have to come back to try it!
Can’t believe we haven’t found this place before!
Great celebration of my son’s graduation. Delicious halibut dinner. Salad dressing was very good. Nice covered patio.
Starters were good. Steak Tartare , octopus and shrimp
Mussels good. Frites terrible
Duck dry and overcooked
Seafood is not their specialty but the steak was delicious!
Both the service and food were excellent. The server was polite and friendly, Service was prompt, and the food attractive and tasty.
Love this restaurant - food, ambiance, service - just simply outstanding. Live approximately 4 hrs away - our daughter attended Queen’s and from our first visit to Kingston to see her 13 yrs ago - we made sure to have dinner at Chien Noir every time we were in Kingston. Wish we lived closer would frequent more often. Definitely one of my favourites
Not quite what I was expecting - more trendy bistro than traditional French restaurant, but the food was delicious & staff were very personable. My steak was very overcooked, but management resolved it to my satisfaction. I will definitely go back if I'm in Kingston again.
