Great atmosphere and great food! And the frites are to die for.
Fourth time at this restaurant- never had a bad meal there. So flavourful...... love the lemon butter and the beet burger.
Food has not been as good the last couple of times we have dined at chien noir. This occasion was Sunday lunch and I thought the menu lacked variety. While my meal was good, it was pricy for what it was. My husband noted his frites had been oveesalted and our dining companion was quite disappointed noted her omelette of the day was uninspiring. There was very little in the way of gluten free or no egg options on the menu.
Have been to Le Chien Noir many times over the years and it does not disappoint. Been there for business, birthdays, occasions and casual dining. Last Sunday was with a dear friend. We were there for over two hours and were served well--attentive without hovering. Just had fun.
It was a long awaited date night for my husband and I. We were seated next to a large group of ladies that were very loud, to the point that we could not hear each other. There were other tables readily available and we had to endure this. They were only about 2 feet away which made us feel like we were eating with them. The water that we were served was warm, the fountain pop was flat and I was made to feel like I was being fussy when I wouldn’t accept the flat pop the second time. Our $29 steak dinner was nothing to write home about. It was a steak, nothing else. Although the peppercorn jus was absolutely delicious. Not $29 worth but very good. I won’t be back. Date nights are too important to waste on noisy tables that are way too close, and a mediocre meal. I will say the service was outstanding!
Food was bland, chicken overcooked, too much money for what we got. Small table meant I was sitting almost on a strangers lap. Won't be back.
Le Cien Noir is my absolute favourite restaurant in the City of Kingston. Amazing food, service and atmosphere!
The jazz night at Musukii in the adjacent patio was rather overwhelming which meant that onversation was a challenge. The food was good, but I felt it was terribly overpriced for supper. The service was excellent.
Chien Noir is a gem. Best restaurant between Toronto and Ottawa.
Our server was outstanding! He made helpful and honest suggestions and recommendations. We asked to share a salad and this did not pose any problems. The steak was excellent, but the frites were lukewarm. As well, the halibut was excellent, but the accompaniments were not hot.
Had read mixed reviews, but thought we’d try it anyway. My husband and I were staying in Kingston overnight on a journey to stay with friends in the Adirondacks. We totally, totally enjoyed the evening.
We chose to sit inside, rather than on the patio, as we thought it might get cooler later on. The decor and atmosphere were charming. We were both delighted with our food choices, which were beautifully presented, and delicious. My husband is quite hard to please, but it all got high marks from him. The Fish Soup was authentic, and better than many in France. Everything we tasted - top marks.
We were not happy with table location despite we made an early booking and many better tables were available when we arrived and stayed empty until we leave!
We were very happy with the food and service.
1st time there. Birthday dinner for my sweetheart. He ordered one of the specials that evening, a pasta dish with lobster. It was $35 for a rather small portion, no side bread etc. For a hungry guy it was a rather disapointing birthday dinner. Myself, I had a burger with fries, which was great & thankfully it served as back up food for the hungry man.
Atmosphere was lovely, service was great.
Our waitstaff may have been new. They didn’t understand what sides came with the fixe prix menu. A dessert was missed. Considering it was for a birthday and their guest was missing the dessert it was embarrassing.
Great food and service. We ate on the patio and it was lovely.
The service and the food was good but not exceptional mainly because it was too salty. The portions were right size, the service good but maybe a little slow, the restaurant was a little cold and the music a little too loud.
Perfect for a relaxing dinner. We were early enough so very quiet.
This is a good place, not outstanding in my opinion, but worth returning to. We arrived early for our reservation and sat at the bar, which is small but pleasant. The restaurant is small so the bar is really in the main restaurant which we don't find ideal, but they have limited space so they did the best they could. We requested a seating change and the host accommodated that which was nice. We ordered the filet which was cooked perfectly rare as requested and the presentation was great.
I enjoyed the interesting wine selections by the glass which allowed us the chance to experiment a bit without committing to a bottle.
Washrooms were dirty and floors and stairs dirty and greasy making it slippery for people with mobility issues.
Food and service were great. However, it was very disappointing to go downstairs afterwards.
Great lunch on our University meeting day. Convenient location, friendly staff and fabulous food. I had the best club sandwich ever!
Steak was under done. It was replaced no questions and was excellent then
Our favorite place for lunch in Kingston. The back patio is delightful - lots of shade. The menu is Nicole adventurous.
The food was fantastic! The service was slow, had to pour our own wine, an hour before we were served bread, we expect better service at this price point.
When travelling between Montreal and Toronto that is our proverbial pit stop. Always enjoyed it.
The dining room lights kept flickering and it was as hot as a sauna in there (to be fair there was a heat wave in Ontario) but the food was good and the service was as well.
Excellent food, especially enjoyed the great selection of appetizers/small plates!! Great service too!!
I made the reservation with a request for a table on the back patio... the website does not indicate that they don't offer patio reservations so we were disappointed when offered a table smack in the middle of the dining room. They moved us to a booth and we were given free espresso with baileys at the end of our meal as an apology. The food and service was great. My only suggestion is to make the reservation rules and limitations more clear on the website.
Seems the kitchen got backed up the night we were there. Took 2 hrs before our main came and when it did it was dry. The manager was quick to correct the issue though which definitely won them back points. Good pentential for a great experience we just didnt get them on a good night.
Skip our waitress was awesome. Super friendly. Great service and food. Lovely night
Food and service were excellent (tuna tartare was delicious). The dessert was a bit dry (chocolate tart). Very welcoming even for families with young children.
Everything was great. The service was efficient and personable, the menu was eclectic, and the drinks list was extensive. We sat in the courtyard, and was lovely fir outdoor summer dining. The food was delicious (my partner and I shared a 3-item charcuterie board to start; he had the burger, I had the mussels), and his well/garnished Caesar was really tasty while my wine paired well with everything. It was a tad on the expensive side, and the wine markup was high... However, I would still recommend! 4.5 stars :)
Very nice restaurant!
Menu is attractive by the diversity of food!
Very nice service, very friendly
There was an issue with one of our orders which was handled most graciously and professionally...The ambiance was very welcoming, casual French. Menu had something wonderful for everyone. I was visiting from Miami, so this meal had to count...if you know what I mean :)

Portions are very small and not worth the money. French fries burnt and low quality. Lobster roll was tiny! Will never go again.
Great place ...............................................................................................adsfasdfasdfasdf
One word....phenomenal!! The food, the service, the ambiance all rolled into a great experience!
I have for many years considered Le Chien Noir to be one of Kingston's better restaurants for food quality and value. Unfortunately our experience with friends on July 19 missed the mark on that expectation. We sat in the back courtyard, which has lovely ambiance, but things slid downhill from there. First, the service was slow after we placed our orders. Not only was the food somewhat slow arriving, but the dish removal, offer of coffee and desert, and delivering the bill, got progressively slower. Our server apologized (it wasn't her fault) and said it had been "quiet", so one of the other servers was sent home. Given that we were there early (a 5:30pm reservation), one might question why that decision was made so soon in the evening.
The second issue was my main course. I ordered the "rack of lamb", which I haven't had for some time and was really looking forward to. For $39, I expected a full rack with 6-8 ribs. I was very disappointed to have my plate delivered with barely a half-rack serving. There were only 3 ribs; one single rib cut and one double rib cut. The double had been sliced off at a declining angle, leaving the meaty portion almost as thin as the single rib portion. About 6 small bites and a bit of bone nibbling later, I was finished, wishing for the rest of the rack. The meat was nicely seasoned and properly cooked, but it should have been advertised as a half-rack, especially given the $39 charge.
I should have questioned the serving size at the time, but with friends along it didn't feel like the right place and time to raise the issue.
While the food was tasty and the ambiance was nice, the service and undersized serving were disappointing. I realize restaurants can have "off" nights, but to serve 3 small lamb ribs and call it a rack is inappropriate, especially at such a high price. Perhaps it was a kitchen error, and I would still recommend LCN to others, but for now it will be a somewhat cautious recommendation.
i ordered the mussel and the french fries, which were very good, although a small portion. The waiter forgot the french fries and only brought them out quite late (they were free then at least)
The chicken and the lamb very very good, although the lamb was a small portion also
great service, good menu and good atmosphere
Not a lot of gluten fee choices
It was a wonderful experience. The food was great, as usual and the service was exceptional. Always a pleasure to go there.
A very pleasant evening at Chien Noir, just before we caught the Corteo show at the Leon's Centre. Service and food were very good, as always. We opted to sit on the back patio but the table we had was located under what appeared to be an air conditioning vent. When it kicked it, it was distracting and a tad hard to hear. Had there been other tables for two available we would have asked to move and there was no sense asking that it be turned off as it then would have adversely affected the diners inside and we're not complainers about things that can't really be controlled. Suggest that perhaps this table just be removed. Otherwise a most enjoyable time, and this was a minor issue. Food was great and our server top notch!
