The food was exceptional and the service was outstanding. We had guests visiting from out of the country and it was important that we could have a good conversation not having to raise our voice for one another to hear. It was perfect and out guests from Italy were most impressed.

This restaurant was areal high end place to dine years ago and unfortunately it is not any more. The service was great, but the food was average at best, and the whole restaurant seems not to e maintained properly. The restrooms don’t look like they do in high end places, and cleanliness seems compromised.

Very much wanted to enjoy this restaurant - such a lovely space, and the service was attentive and friendly. But the food, while in some cases creative, with many plant-based versions of famous Vietnamese dishes available, was overall too bland and lacking in authentic-seeming flavors. Each dish came with its own special version of dipping sauce, but each sauce was "almost but not quite" tasty enough. As befits its high-rent location and decor, the prices are rather steep especially given the underwhelming food. The night we were there, a *very* loud party was happening in the upstairs lounge, with attendant thumping music and squealing teenagers.

The restaurant still has the old colonial charm and the service was excellent as always. We went there mainly for the ambience because we knew the foods there were so so. The vegan curry turned out to be delicious and so was the passionfruit cocktail. However, my filet mignon shaking beef, fried pho (yes, fried rice noodle) and desserts were so so as we expected.

A gem off the beaten path! San Fran has many delicious food options. Many! However Le colonial has managed to provide exceptional service, an inviting and attractive atmosphere as well as stellar food options to make for an evening we won’t soon forget. We highly recommend this restaurant because it not only checks all the boxes, it is an operated by people who care and make all their customers feel valued. Their menu offerings are well composed and the flavors truly enhance the feeling of eating true Vietnamese French inspired culinary fare. We will visit again and again when in the area and recommend that anyone looking for exemplary service, delicious cocktails ( the lychee martini is my new fav) and fresh balanced and delicious ethnic meals, look no further. You will understand why this has instantly become a favorite for ours after you try. Truly a gem!

We had 2 cocktails, 2 appetizers, 2 entrees and the presentation, service and ambience were all outstanding. The tamarind margaritas are beautiful and ok for taste. The shrimp pancake crepe appetizer was good. But not the rest. Maybe it’s what I ordered so strongly recommending you avoid these items. The crispy imperial crab rolls had no flavor despite the accompaniments. The braised swordfish was over cooked, dry, fishy and just not good. But the absolute should not even be on the menu item was the fried pho noodles - it was totally inedible, had an overpowering smell I couldn’t place, and the pho noodles were not crispy but almost like eating hard plastic. For almost $200 meal for 2, it was extremely disappointing especially for SF where there are SOOO many better options :(

We were surprised that Le Colonial was virtually empty on a Friday night. There were only 3 tables occupied inside and 2 or 3 outside. Our server was very helpful, pleasant, friendly and just lovely. My husband and I shared the Imperial Crab Rolls as our appetizer. They were very good but messy to eat. For my main course, I had the Papaya Salad with Shrimp....no Calamari. It was okay but not great and I would not order it again. My husband had a beef dish for his main dish and he said it was tasty. For dessert we each had a scoop of ice cream which is served over fresh fruit. We both said that the dessert was the best part of the meal. The restaurant is SO dark that I had to use my flashlight to read the menu and I could hardly see my food when I was eating. Why are restaurants kept dark? That detracts from the experience.

We should have checked the menu before we went. We were expecting a menu like the old Le Coloniale. Our waiter had a very large party next to us so service was a bit slow, but not his fault. Perhaps we should have been given a waiter who was not committed to such a large group. The swordfish was extremely hot, both in temperature and spice. Almost inedible. The waiter should have informed us that it was very spicy. The steak was delicious. All in all, we were a bit disappointed in the food and the service. Again, the waiter did the best he could under the circumstances. Lovely ambiance.

My dinner at Le Colonial is a meal I’ll cherish for a very long time. I often dine out alone when traveling for business and my waiter made me feel right at home! Everything on the menu sounded too good so I asked him for recommendations. They did not disappoint! I ordered the pork belly appetizer which was delicious and also quite fun to eat! You do get your hands a bit messy but Le Colonial has you covered.. delivering a hot steamed towel to freshen up your hands before your main course arrives. The attention to detail here is incredible! For my entree, I got the Chilean sea bass, served with a coconut turmeric sauce, roasted tomatoes, mushrooms, sweet potato glass noodles, and cooked in a banana leaf! The presentation was stunning and portion was 12 oz! Both dishes were absolutely delicious. The garlic nuoc Cham served with the pork belly was an additional highlight and so were the roasted tomatoes in the Chilean sea bass dish. You really get a depth of flavor and can tell there is love put into this food and the service! I’m so sad I don’t live in SF but will be back again when work takes me back! Especially to try dessert which looked incredible at the table next to me.

Delicious meal and great service. Server made some selections that were outstanding. Went on a Thursday night early, so restaurant was not full, so noise level was minimal, but was filling up by the time we left. Highly recommend this restaurant.

We dined at Le Colonial to celebrate our daughter's birthday. The restaurant was quite empty (compared to the last time we were there a few years ago) so it was quiet. The food was incredible, as always. We ordered family style and shared a few appetizers, mains and sides. All exquisite! Our waiter was attentive and helpful and even gave us a free dessert for our daughter. We love this restaurant!

Wonderful food as always. We been going there for 20 years or so, not often, but each time we enjoy it so much. After a recent trip to Vietnam I can say the food is very authentic classic Vietnamese cuisine at a high level of freshness and perfectly prepared. We just love the place!

Nostalgic bites of the flavors of my childhood. Banh Xeo was tasty, Thit Bo Luc Lac, Pork Belly and Eggplant all had the correct flavors I remember and my taste buds longed for my Grandmother’s cooking. Excellent service - attentive, friendly but not overbearing.

Outstanding service and food; very subtle spices. Lamb was not my favorite but everything else was off the chart. The mother's day live keyboard and trumpet jazz made the mood and atmosphere perfect. We'll be back.

The new chef is amazing. We’ve been coming here for years and the new menu is just outstanding. Everything was delicious. Very vegetarian friendly too with amazing meat substitutes including pork belly. Just wow.

6:00 Reservation, on a Friday landed us the only occupied table, in the dining room, albeit too small to fit our oncoming order. Our Server was delightful, helpful and genuine. We were a bit out of view , so service was a bit slow for clearing dishes, considering the crowded scenario. The Vietnamese cuisine was delicious. Fried crab appetizer, including a lettuce wrap with noodles, cilantro, basil, and mint, like grazing through a garden, to prepare for your orifice, the anticipation peeked and worth the effort. Next we shared the Shaking Beef and Chilean Sea Bass, along with a side of more crab, atop glass noodles. Wonderful contrasting flavors kept our taste buds popping and our table excited. Finished off with mango and passion fruit sorbets. I especially loved the zing of the latter.

Service was great and restaurant honored round table as requested. We ordered 4 appetizers, and when we only ordered two entrees along two pho soups only, server was upset since not all guests ordered a meal. Odd emotion, but service and food was tasty .

Great restaurant for a small group or business dinner. It lives up to all the positive reviews it gets. Great, interesting food, drinks and desserts. The noise level was not bad for a big restaurant. At times the wait and server services was VERY SLOW. It seemed like the restaurant got too full for the staff size. Even with the service issues, I would definitely go back there.
