Italian cuisine from the Puglia region of Italy, Steaks & Chops. Macello, a rustic Italian restaurant and market/deli located in the Warehouse District (West Loop), offers an airy dining room with wood beams, exposed brick, and two wood-burning ovens. The menu features plenty of thin crust pizza; linguine with mixed seafood in a spicy cherry tomato sauce. The butcher shop inspired market located in the front of Macello stocks cured meats, cheese and food from the Puglia region- the "boot heel" of Italy. Macello appropriately translates to "slaughterhouse"-- the building housed a slaughterhouse in the 1920s.
Food was outstanding, service was definitely lacking. Very loud. We would return again because the dinner was delicious.
Our waiter,Juan, was excellent! Food was fantastic
We have been to Macello's on many occasions and tend to go on Wednesday nights when they have a very good band playing a mixture of Italian and American standards......very lively, very authentic, and the music provides a great synergy to the vibrant decor.
We have never been disappointed with the food, this time we ordered the sea bass (a large portion, very nicely prepared, finished in the brick oven and served with a an outstanding risotto) and the Al Forno (a perfectly cooked cavatelli with a sausage and parm topping.
Service was prompt, informative and courteous. They offer valet parking but you can usually find parking on Lake St.
Great food and service. He was aware we were going to the Hawks game and made sure we had time.
Our server never told us the specials, the filet was good and properly prepared though the Risotto was over cooked and dry. The entire meal it felt like our server wanted us to leave even though it wasn’t close to full. The location and ambience were great though.
Enjoyed my meal at Macello! Great vibe; really liked the old-school brick aesthetic, with the brick oven at the center of the restaurant. Nice wait staff. Good specials -- I had the braised lamb shank, and it was quite good. Pizza was a good appetizer. A rustic Italian feel to this place; feels very authentic, too. I'd definitely eat here again.
There was a live band which was loud for the small space, making it fairly hard to talk. I think they should turn the mic down, as the vocals were the loudest part and/or start the band later. In any event, ask ahead if you’re looking for a dinner spot for convo. Otherwise food was great, and service was lovely.
Great place with great food. The perfect night out.
Cute place tucked away. Great place for a date! Food was awesome
One of the best italian meals i have had in the city. Service was fantastic too- will be back soon!
Server was very nice, friendly and attentive. Food was great and came in a timely manner. Best dish was the clams and mussels in garlic white wine sauce.
The gluten free options were excellent
The regular menu could have been better
I had the cavatelli which was just ok
I wouldn’t recommend it
Appetizers and dessert were good
Absolutely great service and food!
Loved the food and the ambiance. Service was good too.
I LOVE Macello! The food is amazing and the servers are very knowledgeable on the wine they offer, they make great recommendations!
The food tastes incredible
The pizza is one of the best i ever had
The fruit delmar is out of this world
Super cute. Food was great. Great interior. Would be great for a date night.
Great food, great service and great atmosphere.
Our first trip to Macello and we will be back. Excellent food and knowledgeable staff.
Love this place! Had been for lunch and happy hour and finally made it over for dinner and it was everything we wanted for our date night. Delicious food and great service, paying attention to all of our dietary needs to fully enjoy the experience.
Had a 730 reservation and arrived at 7:25. The hostess said that my table was getting cleared. At 7:45, with no further comment from the hostess, I decided to take a walk around and every table was full. By chance I bumped into the owner who offered me his bar stool but I explained I was looking for a table for my 7:30 reservation. He was nice enough to give up his barstool so my date could sit and tell the female bartender to give us a free drink. I assume she thought this meant that she'd get no tip because she could not have been more rude. My date ordered a Rye Manhattan and I asked what kind of gin she has and she literally threw the cocktail menu at me saying "we got like 30" but maybe someone tore a page out of the menu because none were listed. When she returned with the Manhattan I said no gins were listed and she walked to the far end of the bar and while pointing to the bottle tops said, "we have 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 gins" and walked away. She never did come back and take my order and of course the knowledge of the free drinks never made it to the waiter.
The food is great and the place is cool, but its loud and the glass of wine pours make it appear as if someone took a few sips before giving it to you.
Not sure I'll be back but that little blonde bartender is the worst.
Went to Macello to celebrate Valentine’s Day with my wife and she loved it, we both did. Our waiter couldn’t have been nicer and the food was amazing. Thanks!
Gem in the west loop. Warm ambience with the wood burning pizza oven. Excellent service
The experience was first class. Food was excellent.
We had a wonderful waiter, very knowledgeable about the menu and the In list. We took his recommendations and everything was spot on. Room was very festive, bright but not overwhelming. Would highly recommend this place.
Our first disappointment at your establishment. Had to send the steak back 2 times for a medium rare asking. It was comped but the romantic moment we hoped for never occurred. The Waiter did the best he could. We wanted wine stem glasses that what like everybody had except us. Having to ask for silverware twice , again disappointing . We have been 12 times over the years and now we are 12/13. Thank you for taking the moment to hear us.
Nice place, great ambiance and service. While my seafood was great, wife’s lamb not so much. When he asked how it was and she provided feedback, the waiters response was to ask if we wanted to take it home. While the dish was ok, it was not the usual plus the risotto was not all that tasty. I’ve always enjoyed the restaurant and will come back.
Exceeded our expectations in every way possible! Will be back!
Even though the place was packed we were still able to enjoy quiet conversation. Highly recommend!!
Being born in Calabria Italy and raised in Chicago, I’ve often in the past have been asked what’s your favorite Italian restaurant. I’ve always been at odds with that questions as I never had any string inclinations to favoring any of the many Chicago Italian restaurants I’ve frequented. Well that’s all changed after my first but no doubt not last visit to Macello. Macello is my favorite
Chicago Italian restaurant. Food is authentically southern Italian in its preparation and taste with a slight modern upgrade and twist. Service I was consistently good throughout our stay. Loved that they provided my wife and I with a complimentary glass of their homemade limoncello. What was better and kinder was that they gave our eleven year old son a glass of their alcohol free limoncello. Very much looking forward to returning often.
I love Macello. The service and food are impeccable. The decor is unique and lovely. Valet parking is $8 for dinner.
Macello is our “go to” for dinner..especially last minute! We never have any issues getting in and we can always count on great food!
I stopped by with my family before we went to the Cher concert. The restaurant was really great. The only real issue that we had was that a lot of the main plates were delivered at different times because they came from different kitchens. It wouldn’t have been such a big deal, except we waited quite a bit for everyone to finally be given their main meals. But again, everything was pretty outstanding. It’s a small complaint in what was otherwise a really great evening.
Very quaint and great food. Service was outstanding. Not sure if it is customary but our server brought us each a shot of limoncello at the end - which was a nice surprise and touch! Also, the melon, prosciutto
with figs appetizer was excellent.
We went to dinner for Restaurant Week. I made a reservation for 7:30pm. We got there right on time, walked in, got seated, and received water right away. Before someone actually approached our table to greet us, it was about 5-7 minutes. The server we had did make it over and asked if we'd like anything to drink. At that point I asked for the Restaurant Week menu. From that point on, he seemed to not care about us. He was very impersonal and rushed us every time he came over. Seemed like he was in a hurry to flip the table or maybe leave for his shift. He didn't take his time with us in the least. Even at times when we were hesitating on what to order, he would just stand there and wait - didn't offer to answer any questions or say take your time I'll be back in a few. He didn't crack a smile once or seem friendly at all. Even the bus boy would come by too often to try and grab our plates when we weren't finished. Our waiter did come by at one point and topped off our wine glasses with the bottle we ordered, which I appreciated. We saw who we thought and was most likely the owner. He didn't appear friendly or seem happy. We never saw him stop and check in at any of the tables, even though the space was small and very easy to do. We did however really enjoy the live band. It helped the ambiance incredibly. The level of customer service overall seemed very low, especially for what customers pay to dine there. The food was mediocre, granted it was items off of the Restaurant Week menu. I expected the food to be authentic Italian food but it didn't taste like it. One of the items off the Restaurant Week menu was fried artichoke and cauliflower. I ordered it thinking it would have some more to it like spices, flavoring, or a sauce. It was literally only fried with no seasoning or anything to dip it in. The cavatappi pasta was decent. The grilled salmon I ordered was average. I personally would never return to this restaurant.
We went for a birthday dinner on a Wednesday. The food is very good but it was the musicians playing that really made the experience.
I would say that the service was friendly just over keen for a romantic dinner. We didn't need to be served that quickly especially when there is such good music to enjoy.
Thanks for the birthday tiramisu.
Authentic Italian! Always great Puglia region food and wine with friendly service.
We visited on 2/2/19 for my husband's 30th birthday and we had an absolutely fantastic time! My husband and I were living in Rome for the past few years and we were both really missing authentic Italian food, so that was his only request for his birthday. Macello was the PERFECT place and we had an amazing dinner with our friends. We will most certainly be back and we will be recomming Macello to anyone looking for an authentic dinner with a lively atmosphere.
Love this place! Great food and great service
We love the food! Delicious authentic Italian food!!
