Italian cuisine from the Puglia region of Italy, Steaks & Chops. Macello, a rustic Italian restaurant and market/deli located in the Warehouse District (West Loop), offers an airy dining room with wood beams, exposed brick, and two wood-burning ovens. The menu features plenty of thin crust pizza; linguine with mixed seafood in a spicy cherry tomato sauce. The butcher shop inspired market located in the front of Macello stocks cured meats, cheese and food from the Puglia region- the "boot heel" of Italy. Macello appropriately translates to "slaughterhouse"-- the building housed a slaughterhouse in the 1920s.

We love this restaurant and have been coming for a few years. Unfortunately, our waiter ruined this meal for us. He spilled wine while pouring (on my shirt and splattered on 2 plates) and he was rushed when taking our order. We asked for our pork chop and filet to be cooked medium. When I tried to tell him I wanted to make sure it was still pink he was dismissive and said he knew what we wanted. Well, he didn’t. Everything was well done. Totally overcooked to the point of not being able to cut it. So disappointed.
This is our go-to place when we see a performance at City Winery. Street parking is always easy, and it's a very short walk (less than two blocks) to CW. Consistent Puglia-style food, with lots of typical Italian dishes. I've had the chicken vesuvius several times, always good. We've had a couple different pastas, especially like the Bolognese sauce. There's a couple of cheap, good choices on the wine list. Compared to the hubbub of the restaurants east of there on Randolph, it's easy and good.
Excellent gluten-free options and lovely ambiance!
Good ambiance. Food was good but some plates not so good. I had a Pasta dish with vegetables that was 85 percent pasta and cheese sauce, and you had to look hard for the vegetables.
The appetizer with scallops was very good
As always the food was delicious and the service was impeccable. The only problem I had with this visit was the live entertainment. The music/singing was too loud for this venue. It was really difficult to carry on a conversation in a normal speaking voice.
Delicious Food, excellent authentic Italian music by the legendary La Tosca!! Our new favorite spot on Wednesday’s!!!! Thank you!!!!!
i've been to Macello's several times and it was always excellent. Last time was on a 3rd date and they made it perfect. Icing on the cake? Wednesday's they have an incredibly talented music group (musicians of all nationalities playing ethnic and jazz) plus half off on good wines....can't beat a perfect night...
Christian was a wonderful waiter and food was delicious! Great neighborhood place - looking forward to many evenings on the patio!
Macello is eclectic, fun and delicious! My first generation husband and his parents(from Bari) loved the food and the owner. I highly recommend this lovely restaurant!
Great Italian food!!!! You can customize your dish. I chose fettuccine instead of farro.
Have been to Macello many times, never disappoints. Food & service alway excellent!!!
Second time at Macello. The first time was a few years ago and have been wanting to get back there for some time. Definitely did not disappoint. A little noisy inside but it is a busy restaurant for a reason. Great food, wine and service. Definitely will be going back for a third time.
We always enjoy Macello and will continue coming back and recommending it. The waiter was very sweet but a little too casual when we indicated someone in our party has a nut allergy. A little more engagement and initiative was needed on the nut allergy issue. We all enjoyed our food. The roast chicken is so delicious! Thank you.
Have been going to Macello for many years and have always had a great meal, but this meal in particular with superb. Can't wait to go again.
Great food. Pizza's, made in wood burning oven, are some of the best in Chicago. Good wine list with low cost options. Service is very friendly and professional. Gary
This place is great. Their fish & meat dishes are some of the best in the city. I love the sea bass & my husband loves the lamb chops - the risotto is cooked perfectly! The pizza is also amazing! This is perfect for any occasion.
This is a fabulous restaurant with great authentic Italian food! The service is first-rate, excellent wine list and delicious food. I’d go back here any day of the week!
Love Macellos. Wood-fired ovens yield excellent dishes from great pizza to creative sea and land food dishes. Great approachable wine list. Love it appetizer to Limoncello.
Food is always good. Like the space. Appreciated the wine recommendation.
We had a 8:00pm reservation and we arrived at 7:50 and we were informed that they were waiting for one table to finish up before we got seated. We waited at the bar until 8:30 watching tables of 4 get seated before us, we went to talk to the hostess and she said the same thing “waiting on a table of 2”. The entire experience was ruined when our night was delayed by 40+minutes.
As always, Macello was a wonderful place to celebrate my son’s birthday. Our table wasn’t ready when we arrived but we edged our way to the bar and were happily served cocktails. Once seated, we had excellent service and meals. We’ll definitely be back soon.
Christian was a great server. Wed nt band a bit too loud for the space size.
Top notch service and excellent food!
Always delicious with fresh ingredients.
Incredibly authentic food. A small taste from a wonderful part of Italy.
Great food and drinks
This was my first time at Macello and I will definitely return. There were quite a few dishes on the menu that I would like to try. I met up with friends from California and they had made the restaurant recommendation. So glad they did! Service was efficient too.
Great quality food and great service! I highly recommend this place if you want great affordable Italian food. Great wine selection
Love their Wednesday live band and half off wine bottles. Delicious food!
Nice, cozy place. Good food. Attentive service. And if you happen to be there on Wednesday night, you will get the live music as well (that was an insensitive for me :))
Wonderful experience all around. Very accommodating as my original group was 10 people that ended up being just 6 of us. We had a wonderful time! Thank you.
Looking forward to coming back, that is the best compliment of all.
Great new spot!
Back again and expected the usual. Great food and service. We had 2 special friends with us for their first visit. Both ordered the salmon special. Only he brought a salmon and a scallop. She definitely ordered the salmon as they discussed the side plating. When the order came and he tried to correct, they were out of the salmon. She got snapper instead but it took another 20 min to prepare while we waited. Food was good, but they really screwed the order.
We’ll go back, but I was disappointed they didn’t offer to comp her meal or at least offer to. Expected more.
Always good food and service.
Love it there. Great experience.
Ownership really does a fantastic job. High quality food and making you feel like family!
Our server, Gustavo, was attentive, knowledgeable, and fun. Our meals were excellent-tasty and beautifully presented. We had a perfect experience at Macello, and will definitely return!
Macello was a lovely surprise! Everything was delicious, service was excellent, would definitely visit again before an event at the United Center! Thanks Macello!
