In the 15th Century, Prince Henry the navigator ordered his explorers to bring back to Portugal any exotic fruits, nuts and plants from the new lands. Tomatoes and potatoes are taken to Europe, Brazilian pineapples were introduced to Azores, Brazilian chili peppers grew in Angola, African coffee was transplanted to Brazil.
Today the Portuguese fondness for ingredients like cinnamon or curry powder, is also a legacy of his time. The Romans brought wheat and introduced onion, garlic, olives and grapes. Later the Moors were the first to plant rice and introduced figs, planted groves of lemons, oranges and almond trees. Portugal is a seafaring nation with a well-developed fishing industry trading cod since the 15th century.
Today, naturally, Portuguese cuisine varies from region to region , but fresh fish and shellfish are found on virtually every menu. BOM APETITE!!!!

Great menu and everything our group of 4 selected was excellent. Wine list was not lengthy but some nice Portuguese and Spanish options. Service was excellent and one of the owners checked in as well to make sure we were being well taken care of.
Have been there many times and the quality of the food was not there
Delicious food with very attentive service!
Friendly service and GREAT food!
The complimentary bread and olives are just the beginning of a wonderful dining experience.
We had two waiters and they were both wonderful. Helpful & attentive. Food was delicious and love the ambiance.
Wonderful dinner, huge portions! A great value for the price. Sangria was also very good.
It’s always awesome!!
We went early for a 5:00 dinner on a Friday. The food and service were great and, though we made reservations we wouldn’t have needed them for that time.
Some tables were close to each other, but overall the dining room areas were exceptionally clean and well appointed.
3rd visit. Always great food and efficient service. Absolutely nothing to complain about.
Always a great time, from the food to the people who make it all happen!
First time dining at Mar Belo and was not disappointed. Had the garlic shrimp and mussels with chorizo for appetizers. One of us had the bronzino, one the shrimp with pasta, another the steak and lastly one order of the mariscada in green sauce. Everything was lovely and the seafood was fresh. Finished with the pistachio gelato topped with crushed pistachios and chocolate sauce. Staff very pleasant. Plan on a return visit.
Consistently outstanding. Food has never disappointed and we go at least once every two weeks. Waiters friendly and helpful.
Delicious food and excellemt service!
Caesar sal dressing quite bland, strip steak totally overcooked. Both unusual as food normally excellent! Very busy nt and perhaps kitchen overwhelmed. They made it right and brought a second steak cooked perfectly. Will definitely be returning.
Excellent food and service. Servers are very attentive and very anxious to please. Highly recommend!
We had an excellent meal, with excellent service. We sat in the bar area, which was a perfect seat for us. I would definitely recommend this place for dinner!
Based on the reviews I was excited to try Mar Bello. It was fair at best. Specified a special occasion in the notes, but was not picked up on by the staff.
Mussels appetizer had a horrible wicked smell to them so could not enjoy them. Not sure what that was all about. Shrim appetizer was very good.
Service was a bit odd, many different staff stopping by. Initial staff just asked do we want water and a drink from the bar within 30 seconds of sitting down. No hello, how are you, have you dined with us before. Etc. probably not trained.
Anyway, the main course we’re pretty good. We had Paella and Mariscada. All in all it was average at best.
Excellent!! Food and service were great. Sangria was on the money.
As usual the sangria was wonderful. We had the red. Started with the garlic shrimp, consistently fantastic. We also ordered the octopus which is usually spot on, but lacked flavor last night. For entrees, we had the duck, which my son said was okay, but he wouldn’t order it again. My other son enjoyed his shush kabob. I ordered the NY strip. It came out under done and cold. Also a little tough if I’m being honest. Finished with flan, creme brûlée and choco fudge cake. Only the cake was really excellent. Double espresso, no lemon peel, cappuccino and sambuca finished the evening. I usually love this place. Not last night. I will give them another shot!!
I had a reservation for 3, ended up having a 4 included in our plans last minute. Mar Belo was happy to accommodate. As usual, the food was perfect. Large portions so there is plenty to bring home leftovers. (My favorite part). We always have a wonderful experience dining here. Be sure to try different things on their menu. You will NOT be disappointed.
Our waiter, dinner, dessert snd sangria was great. Glad we no longer have to drive to Newark for delicious Portuguese food!
The service was a Level 11 out of 10. The staff is the best in the business , the food is outstanding and not over priced. One of my Top 5 Restaurants on the Jersey Shore! One of the Greatest things about this place is the Owner does all the same jobs as his staff and blends right in. That's Management! A++
Great food, service and Sangria.
MAR BELO delivers service, ambience, fresh ingredients, and prices with a great value-reward ratio ...
Always a great meal!
Our Entrees were excellent. My Chorizo appetizer was very fatty. Shrimp and Garlic App was very good
Excellent meal and great service. Pricing was also reasonable.
Great food, wonderful service, a bit on the pricey side but totally worth it!
Appetizer special of shrimp and sausage skewer was terrific. Main course was disappointing. Did not receive the entree I ordered and I didn’t want to wait for a replacement. Shrimp were over cooked and tasteless but the rest of the seafood was OK.
Not sure I would go back.
A cozy restaurant with nice ambiance Would recommend the halibut.
Our first time there. The food was deciduous and the serve and atmosphere were perfect
It was a pleasant dining experience for sure. We sat out back and enjoyed a lovely evening. The food was terrific! I was just a bit surprised about the prices on the menu as I checked the menu on the Open Table app before I made the reservation but the prices were actually higher than listed on the app. Not sure if this is due to covid or if the app should be updated. Either way I will go back again.
Friendly and pleasant staff . Have enjoyed every meal I have been served. Fantastic value!
Have made it my regular go to restaurant.
Excellent meals. Never had a bad one there! Friendly service, highly recommend for REAL Portuguese food!
Excellent food, drink, and service as always! I am going back with other friends later this week.
Food and service excellent
One of the best Portuguese Restaurants (outside of Portugal) I’ve eaten in. We were a party of four and loved every appetizer (we shared 3 - octopus, garlic shrimp and chorizo sausage) and entree (duck, shrimp diablo and 2 of us had the branzino). Also have to mention the garlic butter that was served with the rolls - amazing! I would have given a five star review but unfortunately where we were seated(a table in the bar area) the service was lacking. We even skipped the dessert (which we were looking forward to) because of the lack of service. We will definitely be back as the slow service was not enough to outweigh the amazing food! Next time will insist on a table in the main room though 😃
Fresh seafood was delicious and lamb chop was perfectly cooked. Was here often last year and they were on their game. Came twice in the winter but felt they were not as magical as usual. Glad to say they are magical once again. Don’t know the reason but glad they are back.
First time dining at Mar Belo. It was a wonderful experience. The staff, from the hostess to the bartender to the servers & food runners, were very friendly and attentive. The restaurant is upscale and beautiful. Very clean. My husband had the seafood paella which he really enjoyed. Very good sized portion served in the pot so it remained warm. He said it was delicious. I had the vegetable paella which was also large and delicious. Will definitely return. I wish we knew about this restaurant sooner!
