Had not been to Mazagan in a while. Service was terrible. They also tried to serve us turned wine. Used to be crowded but hardly anyone there. What happened?

The food was excellent. I loved the chicken pastille and the lamb chops. The decor was beautiful. And the service was very good. Our waiter offered to keep our leftovers at the restaurant while we went to the show next door. We picked them up afterwards. That was so nice of them.

Although the food was absolutely delicious, the service was very poor. The restaurant was 60% full for dinner that evening so it was not busy. We were a party of 5. When the waiter arrived, instead of asking if the table was ready to order, he just went to the youngest person and asked quietly for their order and then he proceeded to take all our orders in a rushed manner without answering our questions. One person in our party ordered two appetizers for he main meal and asked that they not be brought out until the other 4 meals were delivered so we could all eat together. This same waiter brought out her appetizers within 5 minutes and she ended up eating alone. 30 minutes later the balance of the meals were delivered. We felt we were rushed through dessert.

This was some of the worst service I've ever received. They forgot about some of the food we ordered. Then they wildly under-cooked it. They forgot about our boxes for our food. They forgot to get us the bill. Nothing was comp'd and the waitstaff spent most of the time flirting and gossiping. Never going back again.

I was disappointed with the quality of the food and service my wife and I had at Magazan. Perhaps we did not order the right dishes. Still, I will not dine there again. The service was puzzling. While there were relatively few customers when we arrived and a sizable wait staff, it took what seemed like a long time to get our drinks and food, not to mention the attention of our waitress.

Having returned about 3 months ago from a fabulous tour of Morocco, we contacted another couple living in Richmond we'd met on that tour & invited them for the week-end so we could reconnect, share some photos & especially revisit some of the wonderful tangine dishes we'd enjoyed in Morocco. We were anxious as we went to Mazagan on a Saturday evening. The place at 6:30 was virtually empty... that should have been a tip-off. After our 1st round of drinks arrived, we ordered only to be told the much anticipated lamb tangine was unavailable as they were out of lamb. What to think of a Moroccan restaurant on Saturday evening with no lamb! We settled for less desired other entrees. The four ordered starter dishes arrived without serving spoons that then required each person to use their personal fork to move the morsel to their plate, eat it with that fork and then go back for more with their same fork.. not the way to present starter dishes. We tried to get our waitress' attention to correct this, but was not able to bring her to our table. All & all, a mediocre evening. The lamb kabobs 2 of us ate were replete with grissel, and while tasty.. were not the anticipated lamb tagine that brought us there in the first place. One of us had the chicken bastilla only to comment that it tasted like it been warmed up vice just baked. While the evening served the requirement to revisit the food of Morocco as we recalled, it was so-so at best & a major disappointment with the lack of a lamb tangine. Not going back.

I loved the ambiance and live band but was disappointed in the service. We made reservations for a birthday at 8 and arrived to a confused hostess who said there was no reservation. She then informed us we could wait for a table to finish. This took 45 minutes. We stood at the bar and ordered drinks (they have a nice selection of speciality cocktails) and then waited some more. Finally once the table was empty we watched in horror (I’m being dramatic) as someone else was seated there! LoL the birthday girl actually had to go up to the table and kindly remind the staff that we were still waiting for a 8pm reserved table! We were seated, ordered food and at 9 requested a hookah. She asked if we wanted the hookah now or later, we said now. The hookah arrived at 10:15. That’s a whole hour and 15 minutes. I was definitely annoyed by it all but the food was really good (that was a plus) and it was my wife’s birthday so I did my best not to engage. The manager did bring us a bottle of champagne after I got up to politely explain the reservation and hookah situation. I thought that was a kind gesture. Overall, I’d give them another chance. But just as a heads up, make a reservation on opentable or any other platform then CALL THEM and when you arrive if anything is awry, see the manager first. The hostess seemed a little timid and lost. Bless her.

The food was great. Service was great. The only negative observation was a young man out front wiping down silverware and constantly gazing at my table as if he were interested in watching me dine. The crowd was very light for a Friday evening leading one to believe there are issues with the establishment. I do believe management needs refreshing.

Mazagan was pleasant enough. Service was cordial. The food was, meh. I'd expected the complex Morrocan flavors but was underwhelmed with bland, one note dishes. It needed more. Of the two bastillas we ordered - the savory shrimp was the tastiest - it got close to expectations. The sweeter chicken bastilla had little flavor except from the dusting of powdered sugar. They were out of grilled octopus (maybe octopus doesn't get delivered on Monday. Who knows...) so we ordered the "Taste of Mazagan" platter, which was a nice combo of 9 Moroccan staples: humus, olives, stuffed grapes leaves, zaalouk, etc. served with good, thin, crusty pita. Our entrees followed the same meh tradition, except one. The seafood tagine was flavorful - approaching the complexity of a well made tagine. Our couscous (which they accommodated my daughter's Pollo-Pescaterian diet and replaced the lamb with chicken) may have suffered taste-wise from that substitution. The chicken m'kela had a heavy hand with the preserved lemons and light on the olives. But, alas, the chicken wasn't the fall off the bone kind. We didn't want to stay for dessert.

The service outstripped the food and the cleanliness at this corner Moroccan joint in Arlington. The first table we sat at (which was unstable), the napkins were dirty and the table unwiped. We moved to a marginally better table, but the deep burn holes in the floor and the dust and dirt around the margins of the room made it little more appetizing. Our server was delightful if a bit forgetful but managed to bring the food out in mostly the right order (though the cocktails in an otherwise empty restaurant took way too long to appear). The salads were decent but could have done with a little fewer romaine stems and more actual leaves. The bastilla was dry as a remainder biscuit after a voyage, but the chicken m'kelli was flavorful and went well with the moist couscous. I can't say I'll be back for that, though.

It wasn’t unpleasant but, the waiter was extremely slow, when we ordered an advertised a 2011 wine they brought us a 2016 bottle and we had to point it out. They were out of Moroccan wine and they didn’t offer us dessert or tea/coffee after the meal. The feeling was as if we were keeping them but there were other parties too. Sad experience because I was expecting good food and service but neither met expectations. Not worth driving from DC to it. It needs more attention to customers and could benefit from better service. I’d rate it a 2 out of 5

Arrived with a reservation, still there was no table avail . Had to wait . Sat down for a while , no water service or any acknowledgement from passing servers !!!
And when the server decided to come over our table or finally could come to take the order , did not hear sorry for the delay or ignoring business as usual took the order and then again we had to wait a long time to have what we ordered and we did not eat at the same time because we did not have silverware and we were served half ( the server will bring 2,plates and forget about one for a while . And it was like this for the whole meal .
And since I was not served as my guests and was checking the kitchen to try to understand why my food is not coming ; I noticed the chef/owner breaking his fast ( nothing wrong with that !), but he was eating with his fingers like putting the boiled egg in his mouth with his hand and resume plating the food without washing his hand or using plastic gloves .Terrible hygiene !!!!
No manager or Maître d insight to complain , or anyone came to ask if everything was alright .
It seems they care less since they impose on you 18 percent service charge whether you like it or not .
Well i did not like it and I won’t come back and will tell all my acquaintances not to go to Mazagan as it is a masquerade !!

It was recommended to me by my Team Lead at work. He bragged about the bristal...I had it, and it was great! It was my sister's Birthday! Tuesday, April 24th. We went there at 8pm. She wanted something classy, and nice with a little pizzazz. This was the perfect place. Our waiter Manny was outstanding, and made sure we were well taken care of. He even took pictures for us. I had my toddler there as well. The food was great! This place really made my sister's Birthday special, and fun! I am definitely coming back, and recommending others.

My daughter wanted to take me to brunch for my birthday during my 4 day visit to town.

I had open table reservations for noon on a Sunday , the advertised time of opening. The door was locked at noon, my daughter and I walked around the block, and found the door unlocked at 12:15.

However, the well dressed host apologized and stated “ sorry, we are not open yet”.

We thanked him and left.

The menu looked great, the restaurant decor lovely, but I will never know how great a meal one can enjoy at this establishment.

The one star is due to the fact that the review module has no symbol for “failed”.

This was my second time back but it has been about year and a half. I loved Mazagan my first time there - the food was delicious and really dazzled the palate. This time around it appears the quality has declined. The food was not as good and lacked flavor which was unexpected given it's Moroccan. The service was unremarkable and average. I was quite disappointed.

First visit to Mazagan was Valentine's Day. Making a reservation was easy and seating was available when we arrived. We were seated in the lounge area, which is not smoky despite the presence of hookahs. The fixed price menu for Valentine's Day was overpriced for the selection and quality of food. We tried the mezze platter and found it to be great. Wine selection was good. Service was very slow but I attribute that in part to the fact that it was a special occasion evening and a bit busier than usual. The restaurant hosted a three piece jazz band whose music was a great compliment to the ambiance.

While the manager was nice, the waiters were not qualified at all. Very slow service, they didnt explain the menu. They were not even able to open correctly a bottle of wine. Ended up with cork in my glass, and they never refilled our glasses.
Waiter will disappear until you start looking for them.
Food was just average, nothing special, and I ate moroccan in many other places, will give it a C.
And of course the prices were high for the qualify of food and service you get.
Very disappointing!
Also the place isn't maintained well.
Not recommending it.

The food was quite good, definitely worth going back and trying some other things. HOWEVER, I will not be going back on a Saturday night. It was packed, they had a jazz combo playing at Glenn Miller Orchestra-meets-
Iron Maiden volume, and as a consequence, our server only squeezed over to our table about every 20 or 30 minutes.

On the plus side, again, the food was good and the service was friendly enough...the owner was there, clearly trying to please customers with the experience....that's gotta count for something. Just not a calm, quiet place for date night (on a Saturday)!

What a waste of time - we showed up at 7:30pm last Saturday for a dinner we had all been looking forward to. We were told that there was no table available and to wait at the bar. 20 mn later, we enquired and were told that there was still no table. I mentioned the fact that we had a reservation and was told that " its really not the way it works - where things are busy, you just have to wait?". So really, what is the point of making a reservation. We left. Not happy.

Loved it! So excited to find authentic Moroccan food close to home. The decor is lovely and music is modern though maybe a tad loud. The food is excellent—made me want to go back to Morocco immediately! My only disappointment was that they were out of tea the night I visited. How can you have Moroccan food without the tea experience?! I was encouraged to see such a wide range of patrons from all cultures and age groups. The jazz band that played Saturday night was really good.

Went for an early dinner before a show at the draft house. The restaurant was not very busy. Only a couple of tables and a party in the glass room. Place had a musty smell of hookah. Not terrible but not pleasant. Service was surprisingly slow given how few customers were there. They were out of all but a couple of their white wines so I ordered a bottle of beer. My friend got an earl grey gin and tonic which was interesting and a little odd but not particularly good. For dinner we ordered the shrimp and chicken bastille. The shrimp was good and I enjoyed the bread and olives brought to the table. The bastille was just ok and I wouldn't order it again. Overall the experience was mediocre and I won't be returning.

We ate here during Metro Restaurant Week. Loved that we got a basket of dense bread to start. We enjoyed the combo of veggie appetizers (don't recall their Moroccan names, but which were spinach, eggplant and tomatoes and peppers)--they were wonderfully seasoned and tasted great on the pita we ordered extra. The bastilla (chicken in phyllo with almonds) was tasty, as were our entrees, Moroccan couscous with lamb and lots of veggies and beef tagine. Nice decor, not noisy--a nice dining experience.
