Introducing: Modus Ristorante, the plush new Financial District spot for upscale Italian
Modus Ristorante, a new restaurant in the Financial District, might serve Italian food, but refreshingly, no one’s anxious to label it “rustic.” Behind Modus is Sam Genkov, owner of the 16-year-old District favourite Bravi Ristorante, and chef Bruce Woods, formerly of Brassaii.
No stranger to high-end Italian cuisine, Woods worked at Il Posto in the late ’90s, becoming executive chef and co-owner of Centro after taking over for Marc Thuet. Modus’s menu shows Woods back in his element, re-imagining recognizable Italian classics as fine-dining creations.
Behind the restaurant’s 300-bottle wine program is sommelier Ruben Elmer of Profile Wine Group, who has also previously worked at Canoe and Auberge du Pommier. The list offers 10 reds and eight or nine whites by the glass, with a heavy focus on Italian, Californian and South American wines.

It was good, but not exceptional. Not a place I would order recommend ordering steak. The pasta dish I had was, again, just good, but almost too much pesto. The old standard traditional Italian spaghetti and meatballs was very good!

50th bday lunch
Great service, polite and attentive. We had the buffala mozzarella which was really good. Mains were the seared tuna and the rigatoni. Very tasty. My client liked it. Said it was delicious. Will be back again soon.

I was in town for business and was invited to lunch by client. He wasin a rush so I just ordered the main course, the gnocchi, and it was fantastic. But, I had to come back for the warm octopus salad before I left. So i had dinner the night before returning home. I had the warm octopus salad and it did not disappoint! Nor did the Tuna for the main course, with a great glass of Barolo. Great restaurant and good service. I will be back on my next trip !
I have been to modus quite many times and I have not been disappointed. We had a great server ( but I don't remember his name).

Modus patio has been one of my go-tos for lunch on patios during my busy work week. In the past years, I could book a spot on the patio whenever I found time for a decent lunch via Opentable just minutes before I got there. Last week, I did the same via Opentable but when I arrived, I was told I should not do that, when I want a patio seating I have to call the restaurant because the patio was too busy. I did get a table on the patio and the whole time I was there the patio was barely 50% full. It definitely takes away from a other wise good experience
Sam was very attentive. He made sure we enjoyed our meal and had time to get to our 7:30pm show time.
$350 for three people you expect the best. The food was so disappointing. It was a quiet Wednesday night and I was served food that had been prepared in advance and tasted like it. Cold, dry and not special at all. It was like eating left overs, I expected so much more! There was no effort from the kitchen, shame on them. Close on a quiet evening, don't take the reservation.
The Valentine course meal was decent but not worth the price. The dessert was especially disappointing.

Sorry but I feel the Valentines prix fixe was highly over priced for the rather average food offering. Also the 18 % service charge that's automatically added to the bill is less than acceptable if you feel that the service was average at best.
The service was incredibly slow (we were there after lunch hour rush). Our order was wrong (ordered beef tartare, got carpaccio... very similar and we are not the complaining kind so we ate it). The pasta was alright but way too basic. Tomato sauce, pasta, a few slices of sausage. Meh.
Overall, not a great experience. The beer we ordered was not cold, the pasta that we were served was undercooked, and the service was received was rather disappointing.
What a gem tucked away in the financial district! We wish we had found it sooner but happy to now say it is our new favourite! The decor is very elegant, relaxing and roomy. Amazing, seamless, attentive and accommodating service by staff from the booking to waiting on our table. Menu and specials of the day had something delicious for everyone. Pricing very comparable to other restaurants of this quality. The only criticism is some portions were a bit smaller than expected. Don't waste money searching for the perfect restaurant, just make your reservation at Modus Ristorante!

Its comfortable seating, elegant ambience, superior service and outstanding Food are some of the excellent reasons for me to recommend this restaurant.
Arranged the small private room for a group of 14 at Modus for a Xmas "reunion". Stephanie, the event coordinator was fantastic and made the booking process a breeze. From the moment we arrived to check our coats until we picked them up again on our way out, the service was first class. The waiters were knowledgeable and helpful without being intrusive. We chose to order a la carte rather than having a set group menu, which everyone appreciated. The food was fantastic, with everyone having appetizer, main and dessert. I can personally recommend the calamari appetizer, scallops main course, and mousse cake dessert! And the sommelier helped out with a great red wine suggestion that those who were drinking enjoyed very much. The private room was a bonus - no extra charge as long as you met the food and drink minimum, which we passed easily! All in all a great evening - highly recommended.

We particularly appreciate being able to have a conversation over dinner and being able to hear one another without loud music or kitchen noise.

Service was great. Portions could be a little more generous and a wider selection of desserts. (Non-dairy) or alternatives.
Modus was very busy and the noise level was very high. My companion had not finished his starter when the main arrived and he felt very rushed and didn't finish his appetizer. I food was good but very poor value with such high prices.
The food was great however, the server clearly wished he was somewhere else. Perhaps serving a group six businessmen rather than six women? His demeanour negatively affected my experience as the hostess (partner at a major law firm) of my group Christmas lunch.
Great experience and impressed the attendees. The picture of the woman as you enter the restaurant encouraged really entertaining and interesting conversation.

Admittedly our visit was during the holiday rush, but . . . the service was pushy, the food came out so fast you knew it was prepared that morning and, as with previous experiences, the food was largely tasteless (LCD, I guess)

Great find for a special meal! We found This diner through Open Table during our stay at the Shangri-La and what a great find it was. The ambiance is classy and inviting; great service and delicious meal. We will definitely be back at this wonderful restaurant.

Went to Roy Thompson hall for a show so it was very convinient location Also food choices right up my alley tartare venison chop all quite tasty, service also quite good thank you
