Introducing: Modus Ristorante, the plush new Financial District spot for upscale Italian

Modus Ristorante, a new restaurant in the Financial District, might serve Italian food, but refreshingly, no one’s anxious to label it “rustic.” Behind Modus is Sam Genkov, owner of the 16-year-old District favourite Bravi Ristorante, and chef Bruce Woods, formerly of Brassaii.

No stranger to high-end Italian cuisine, Woods worked at Il Posto in the late ’90s, becoming executive chef and co-owner of Centro after taking over for Marc Thuet. Modus’s menu shows Woods back in his element, re-imagining recognizable Italian classics as fine-dining creations.

Behind the restaurant’s 300-bottle wine program is sommelier Ruben Elmer of Profile Wine Group, who has also previously worked at Canoe and Auberge du Pommier. The list offers 10 reds and eight or nine whites by the glass, with a heavy focus on Italian, Californian and South American wines.

Our server wasn’t personable at all. The restaurant wasn’t as busy as we had expected for Valentine’s and maybe she was having a bad day? My date mentioned that she felt uncomfortable by how we were being talked to. The food was good, although the portions could have been slightly larger. Some tables were getting bread while they waited for their food. We waited for a while but we didn’t get any.

Service was excellent. Food just ok and overpriced. Pint of draft beer decent but overpriced at $11. Crab cake appetizer not bad but way overpriced at $20. Swordfish main just ok. Fish portion small (thin and dry). Risotto side tasty. Plate otherwise uninspiring. Coffee and desert normal. Not much vibe or ambiance in the large, tired room. Wasn't very busy (not surprising). Overall, other than the excellent service (likely due to the place being almost empty), a sub-par experience when taste, portion size, price and ambiance all factored in. Would not go back there until changes are made. Too many other better options at same or lower price point. Bring in Restaurant Makeover!

Very welcoming, service professional, unobtrusive to invisible yet amazingly able to predict needs. Which allowed for a fluid and productive business meeting. Food is always top quality.

The service and food was great. The feature duck appetizer was delicious. Good portion size and a great wine list too.

My friend arrived late for a pre-theatre dinner, but service was friendly and efficient so we were able to finish in good time. Main dining room is an elegant , softly lit space and tables are spaced appropriately to allow for easy conversation. Food was flavourful and well prepared, and served reasonably quickly . My friend raved about her butternut squash soup ( gluten free and served with or without addition of maple bacon butter) . Arctic Char was also excellent .

Supremely rude hostess. Food quality was very good but the service from the kitchen and the bar was very slow. This is a restaurant that is used to being busy so the excuses from our server that they were slammed was not helpful.

Went for a birthday dinner for two, but there was a party happening in the lobby, which was really loud and you had to work your way thru crowd to get to restaurant. The divider curtain does nothing for the noise, but closes visability. Food was ok, for the price point, over hundred dollars and that was without drinks. Had to wait awhile for the coat check to return with coats.

I ordered the Seafood Pasta with squid ink. It was so SALTY! I forced myself to eat half but can no longer tolerate it! The waiter asked the chef to prepare a new one for me but it was just as salty! I couldn’t eat it at all! I suspect the entire batch of Squid Ink Pasta was over salted during preparation. I then ordered Sorbetto for dessert, so I could have something to eat. It was soooooo sweet. Way too much sugar! I took one spoonful and couldn’t continue. I basically left the entire Sorbetto untouched. Very bad experience! The Entree too salty, the dessert too sweet.

I don't mind paying 5 star prices when I receive 5 star food. This, was not even close. Two things that stood out above the freshness and actual cooking issues, there was little or no sauce in accompaniment of the mains and the vegetables were overpowered with garlic.

Nice, typical Toronto restaurant. Nothing outstanding.
