Modus Ristorante, a new restaurant in the Financial District, might serve Italian food, but refreshingly, no one’s anxious to label it “rustic.” Behind Modus is Sam Genkov, owner of the 16-year-old District favourite Bravi Ristorante, and chef Bruce Woods, formerly of Brassaii.
No stranger to high-end Italian cuisine, Woods worked at Il Posto in the late ’90s, becoming executive chef and co-owner of Centro after taking over for Marc Thuet. Modus’s menu shows Woods back in his element, re-imagining recognizable Italian classics as fine-dining creations.
Behind the restaurant’s 300-bottle wine program is sommelier Ruben Elmer of Profile Wine Group, who has also previously worked at Canoe and Auberge du Pommier. The list offers 10 reds and eight or nine whites by the glass, with a heavy focus on Italian, Californian and South American wines.
Dinner: Monday - Saturday: 5:00 pm - 10:30 pm
Modus Ristorante has two Private Dining Rooms that can accommodate parties up to 20, 50 and 70 people. AV equipment is also available upon request. The waiter and the staff were generally good. I almost couldn't eat my dish because it was so spicy hot. When I told the waiter, there was no reaction. My wife's dish was fine as was the recommended wine choice.
Always a great spot for a lunch meeting. Fish specials are always great.
The occasion was a get together with family from out of town.
We had a leisurely dinner over three hours. Our waiters were very patient and helpful.
We arrived after the pre baseball game crowd.
The food was very good as usual.
We sat outside and there were a few flies early in the evening but they left as the air cooled.
All in all a very good experience.
As a family of four,we were attending the symphony and it was also a celebration of my wife's birthday. We very much enjoyed our meal and the atmosphere . We will be back!
Excellent service by Jim Stubbs
really good food, good service. nice for conversation with your guests.
Good food and were attentive to need to leave on time for a show.
The food was very good and so was the service initially. No pricing was provided for the specials, so the $69 for an elk steak was quite a surprise when the bill eventually came. After the first course the waiter basically disappeared. He had to be searched out each time for the desert menus, the desert order and the bill.
Food and service very good. Room was very loud.
This is my third time at Modus for a business lunch. Not sure if their kitchen is too small for the seating capacity, but so far the track record is perfect for late food. For a 12pm business lunch, meals coming out at 1:15pm causes unnecessary downtime and rushing a delicious meal down to get everyone to their afternoon obligations.
Service was excellent, food was tasty, good location and ambiance, but the consistent lateness of meals makes it difficult to go back for a business luncheon. For this reason, this is a last-resort spot for us.
Well appointed, excellent food and service. Nice atmosphere without being too noisy for a conversation
I've dined at Modus many many times and I would have rated the food in most of those intances, a 4 star. But the branzinino was just okay and the mixed green salad (instead of vedge) was quite pathetic. The service was also not up to the usual standard.
I'm treating this as a one-off situation, so I will be back.
One of my favorite restaurants in the financial district, never disappoints, first rate and makes a good impression on my business guests.
Had a good time, I only wish that it was written on Open Table that there was a set menu for Valentines Day. I made reservations here looking forward to certain pasta dishes and when we arrived there were only two options, ravioli or spaghetti which weren't very adventurous. Good food, seemed it was a busy night as we had several servers throughout the night and each of them had no idea where we were in our meal. Will try again on a less busy evening.
Our server wasn’t personable at all. The restaurant wasn’t as busy as we had expected for Valentine’s and maybe she was having a bad day? My date mentioned that she felt uncomfortable by how we were being talked to. The food was good, although the portions could have been slightly larger. Some tables were getting bread while they waited for their food. We waited for a while but we didn’t get any.
Service was excellent. Food just ok and overpriced. Pint of draft beer decent but overpriced at $11. Crab cake appetizer not bad but way overpriced at $20. Swordfish main just ok. Fish portion small (thin and dry). Risotto side tasty. Plate otherwise uninspiring. Coffee and desert normal. Not much vibe or ambiance in the large, tired room. Wasn't very busy (not surprising). Overall, other than the excellent service (likely due to the place being almost empty), a sub-par experience when taste, portion size, price and ambiance all factored in. Would not go back there until changes are made. Too many other better options at same or lower price point. Bring in Restaurant Makeover!
Very welcoming, service professional, unobtrusive to invisible yet amazingly able to predict needs. Which allowed for a fluid and productive business meeting. Food is always top quality.
The service and food was great. The feature duck appetizer was delicious. Good portion size and a great wine list too.
My friend arrived late for a pre-theatre dinner, but service was friendly and efficient so we were able to finish in good time. Main dining room is an elegant , softly lit space and tables are spaced appropriately to allow for easy conversation. Food was flavourful and well prepared, and served reasonably quickly . My friend raved about her butternut squash soup ( gluten free and served with or without addition of maple bacon butter) . Arctic Char was also excellent .
Supremely rude hostess. Food quality was very good but the service from the kitchen and the bar was very slow. This is a restaurant that is used to being busy so the excuses from our server that they were slammed was not helpful.
Went for a birthday dinner for two, but there was a party happening in the lobby, which was really loud and you had to work your way thru crowd to get to restaurant. The divider curtain does nothing for the noise, but closes visability. Food was ok, for the price point, over hundred dollars and that was without drinks. Had to wait awhile for the coat check to return with coats.
I ordered the Seafood Pasta with squid ink. It was so SALTY! I forced myself to eat half but can no longer tolerate it! The waiter asked the chef to prepare a new one for me but it was just as salty! I couldn’t eat it at all! I suspect the entire batch of Squid Ink Pasta was over salted during preparation. I then ordered Sorbetto for dessert, so I could have something to eat. It was soooooo sweet. Way too much sugar! I took one spoonful and couldn’t continue. I basically left the entire Sorbetto untouched. Very bad experience! The Entree too salty, the dessert too sweet.
I don't mind paying 5 star prices when I receive 5 star food. This, was not even close. Two things that stood out above the freshness and actual cooking issues, there was little or no sauce in accompaniment of the mains and the vegetables were overpowered with garlic.
Nice, typical Toronto restaurant. Nothing outstanding.
I was in Toronto to write an important exam so I was dining alone. I selected this restaurant to have a safe but pleasant place to dine with excellent food and I was not disappointed.
I was put at a table in the middle of the restaurant and it was a bit of an awkward spot, something cozier would have been nice, but other than that no complaints.
The service was exceptional, as was the wine and the Arctic Char. I would definitely go back.
It was good, but not exceptional. Not a place I would order recommend ordering steak. The pasta dish I had was, again, just good, but almost too much pesto. The old standard traditional Italian spaghetti and meatballs was very good!
Business dinner - was great!
50th bday lunch
Great service, polite and attentive. We had the buffala mozzarella which was really good. Mains were the seared tuna and the rigatoni. Very tasty. My client liked it. Said it was delicious. Will be back again soon.
Wonderful service in the evening time, well managed, attentive staff and Manager visible and engaging, top notch Chef and team. get a patio table!
I was in town for business and was invited to lunch by client. He wasin a rush so I just ordered the main course, the gnocchi, and it was fantastic. But, I had to come back for the warm octopus salad before I left. So i had dinner the night before returning home. I had the warm octopus salad and it did not disappoint! Nor did the Tuna for the main course, with a great glass of Barolo. Great restaurant and good service. I will be back on my next trip !
I have been to modus quite many times and I have not been disappointed. We had a great server ( but I don't remember his name).
Thanks for great service and great good.
Very good food, nice flavors, very good service in a quiet environment.
Modus patio has been one of my go-tos for lunch on patios during my busy work week. In the past years, I could book a spot on the patio whenever I found time for a decent lunch via Opentable just minutes before I got there. Last week, I did the same via Opentable but when I arrived, I was told I should not do that, when I want a patio seating I have to call the restaurant because the patio was too busy. I did get a table on the patio and the whole time I was there the patio was barely 50% full. It definitely takes away from a other wise good experience
This is one of the best restaurants for business meetings in the city. Amazing food and atmosphere and great facilities!
Sam was very attentive. He made sure we enjoyed our meal and had time to get to our 7:30pm show time.
$350 for three people you expect the best. The food was so disappointing. It was a quiet Wednesday night and I was served food that had been prepared in advance and tasted like it. Cold, dry and not special at all. It was like eating left overs, I expected so much more! There was no effort from the kitchen, shame on them. Close on a quiet evening, don't take the reservation.
The Valentine course meal was decent but not worth the price. The dessert was especially disappointing.
Great food. My wife and I really enjoyed our evening.
