About North and Navy
A Northern Italian kitchen inspired by the Bacari of Venice
Our menu is inspired by tradition and dictated by the quality and availability of ingredients. We play off the similarities between the climates of Eastern Ontario and Northeast Italy, and create our take on classic dishes made with seasonal game, seafood and vegetables. Plus, sometimes we’ll just add whatever we want.

North and Navy Ratings and Reviews
Fantastic food, attentive and knowledgeable service. NoNa is hands down the best Italian in Ottawa, and one of my favourite restaurants. Even on a snowy Monday, the crew was killing it. Delicious!
Excellent Meal! Waiter very knowledgeable. I am not sure you could wrong with any of the dishes!!
It was, as usual, an overall wonderful
The appetizers and pasta dishes were excellent and creative. The venison was perfectly cooked and tender. The liver was good. The Ling Cod was surprisingly over cooked and very dry instead of nice and flaky as it should be.
Last Friday was our first visit to North and Navy but it won't be our last. The food was delicious... hands down, the best octopus we've ever had! The dishes are thoughtful, well presented and delicious. The staff were very friendly and attentive... definitely worth another visit.
Nice atmosphere and great service good appetizers however the main courses were disappointing.
An awesome place for supper. My only complaint was the level of noise. It made it difficult to have coversation. Otherwise the food and service was exemplary.
We had dinner at North and Navy prior to heading to the NAC for the Phantom of the Opera. The cicheti was excellent and great to share between three girls. We followed it up with two pasta dishes and the venison - shared everything. Was the perfect amount of food before the 2+ hour show. Will be bringing my boyfriend back for a date night soon!
Great Italian food with innovative ingredients! The menu has changed over the couple of times I've been but always with new and exciting changes. The "library" is a great little room/nook for a really nice visit with friends over a delicious meal (and cocktail or two)
This restaurant was recommended by a fellow food blogger and we agree, we highly recommend it, now! It is a cuisine that reflects Northern Italian dishes and we were so impressed (also because we are Italians). The "cicheti" platter or appetizer platter was varied and delicious, and the pasta dishes we chose were outstanding. Tiramisu and double espresso sealed the deal.
This was my first trip to North and Navy. My wife and I sat at the bar. I never write reviews but I thought the food and service were so outstanding that I had to comment. I would see North and Navy easily in the top 5 restaurants in Ottawa and probably even top 3. I have been to some of the higher rated restaurants in Ottawa and in Montreal that are not nearly as good as North and Navy. Would highly recommend this restaurant.
The atmosphere was amazing can be a very romantic outing but it was a bit noisy. The food was amazing but the pasta portion was kind of small like a taster plate
There were no frilly patterns traced around the food on the plate, just good food well prepared. Really liked the squid ink pasta and the octopus with pork belly. Good beer. Excellent service. Overall, very enjoyable and satisfying.
Server was wonderful, Butternut Squash Mezzaluna highly recommended. Wine matched the food - we had a great time.
One of the best restaurant in Ottawa, Period! The food was outstanding, the wine was magnificent and the waiting staff are professional but super friendly. The only problem is it's SO EXPENSIVE! I can see myself going there mabye once a year or a for a super special event. But other then that I couldn't recommend this place enough.
Each dish was absolutely exceptional! We can’t wait to come back!
Very nice environment, the food and service are both great. A bit on the price side but the entire experience is smooth and comfortable.
Food was excellent - modest portions made it possible to try multiple menu items. Cocktail list was unique and delicious and our server was very knowledgable in all the wines, menu items and cocktails. Loved the small and cozy feel of the repurposed home in downtown Ottawa - will be back!
It was our first meal at North & Navy and we cannot wait to go back! We had a beautiful evening and the meal was incredible. (So were the cocktails and the wine.)
North and Navy is my favourite Ottawa restaurant. Best pasta I've ever had, consistently great service, lovely cocktails.
Overrated and overpriced! Restaurant has had good reviews but our experience was not positive. Food was so-so, noise level high, overpriced for what we had.
The four of us shared a couple of primis, followed by a couple of secondis, and we each had a main. Everything was fantastic, and the service was amazing.
One of the best dining experiences I've have in a long time! Every detail about North and Navy is just wonderful! You have to try the house-cured salami and plums as well as the squid dish!
As good as any meal we’ve had in Italy. Well done!
The food was good, the service was great and the general ambiance superb. We have been for lunch previously but this was our first time for dinner. The will be sorry as we intend to come back!
Great restaurant in Ottawa and can't wait to go back. The steak was outstanding. Service equally great.
Although the waitress was knowledgeable about food that was where the experience went downhill.
The wine, a Chianti Classico, was ok but nothing special.
One of our first courses Cichèti Plate was disjointed and the items did not complement each other. The other Fried Humboldt Squid was excessively salty.
The second courses, which were slow in arriving, were terrible. One dish, Lake Trout, was almost raw and the rest of the plate just a mess. The other dish, liver and onions, over cooked and burnt and smothered in a sauce which lacked any imagination. We sent both dishes back.
The reaction was cool to say the least and although we were not charged for the two main courses it was no compensation for a wasted Saturday evening.
Will not be going back.
Some dishes were good some should not be served.
The waiter was too pushy to sell the wine!!!!! It was very annoying especially the dinner was for friend's birthday. The waiter put other friends on a spot.
Food was very fresh and nicely presented but portions could be larger. A table d'hote menu could be useful to include. I would suggest not including common entrees like tomato and mozzarella or fried calamari since clients who come to the restaurant want more interesting choices.
Thanks for accommodating my family's needs (hearing impairment). The food was incredible and we loved our experience! Will be back!
We reserved a table for my wife's birthday. We were greeted by our server with a warm happy Birthday and champagne on the house! Our server was very knowledgable and took the time to go over the menus with us. The food was excellent and the atmosphere was also excellently. We will definitely return again!
This was our second visit to Narth and Navy and were fortunate to get the table at the window as we were celebrating my husbands birthday. It did not disappoint. The appetizers were delicious and three out of four ordered the liver and onions. So good. The trout and polenta was also wonderful. Also liked their wines by the glass. Look forward to going back.
Great, authentic Italian cuisine in a cool atmosphere. Service was impeccable!
The menu as listed on the Zomato app is outdated. Despite 72 hr reservation for two identified in advance as a BD dinner for 70+, seating was ultimately disappointing. Initially seated in a quiet corner with a round corner table for two, the atmosphere was lost when halfway through the cocktails and primi a boisterous retirement party of eight was seated next to us.
The Negroni were tasty, one a Classico was up to scratch, the other with a prosecco substitute for the gin mildly disappointing.
The salads were the highlight of the evening, both shared. First a cucumber with shredded yellow peppers, a pickled green (tomato?) and "spoon tomatoes" (which the server had to ask the chef to identify for him) with a marscapone base sprinkled with baby dill. The heirloom tomato salad with baby Basil leaves and Modena vinaigrette was very fresh.
For secundi, the quail and the house famous Viennese liver. The first in a light glaze delighted my guest. The liver was disappointing compared to the delicious serving on August 18th. The server failed to ask and I failed to specify medium rare. It arrived burnt at the edges and with no bacon, but the caramalized onions and the button mushrooms in their delicious sauce were very much up to scratch.
Two glasses of Querica with liver and two of a crisp Pinot Grigio with the quail both paired well.
Limited choice of cheese & fruit plate for dessert -just large crumbles of Parmesan and nice thinly sliced red plum on a board (the attempt to mount a single birthday candle on the corner was a nice touch). Offered with two small ramekins, one of pale honey, the other of Modena vinegar. The toasted peach on sweet cake base with vanilla coulis, small scope of vanilla ice cream on the side and sprinkled with fresh baby tarragon was a very filling end to meal with a short cappuccino and an Americano with sweetener that had to be ordered twice before arriving.
Meal was C$217.00 before tip.
I may wait a while before returning.
Absolutely wonderful restaurant from the food to the service. A bit noisy at times. Perfect for special occasions or a nice date night.
The service and food were great. It was a little loud at times
Service was fantastic. We have nothing negative to say in that regard. Our server was prompt and knowledgeable and took extra care to identify foods that could be a potential allergen to the nut-sensitive.
Overall the food was good. We dined as a party of four. We weren't *blown away* by any of our meals. Presentation was standard, nothing fancy. The meal descriptions sounded far more delicious than the food actually was.
For the price of the plates on the menu we expected more.
Was nice to try, but we won't be heading back any time soon.
We went there for our 4th wedding anniversary. We brought our 7-week child (she slept the whole time!). Everything was great, from the cocktails to the desert. Portions are pretty big and it was most definitely reasonably priced. The squid was amazing and the rabbit a must-try as well. We had a very nice time, we would absolutely return
I took my girlfriend to North and Navy to celebrate her birthday. We were seated immediately and given sparkling wine or champagne to mark the occasion. Our waitress explained (in great detail) the menu and her recommendations. We ended up getting calamari, pasta and steak.
Food was delicious and service was excellent.
Tucked in a brick house in a quiet beighborhood, this charming spot is a hidden gem. We lived every minute from climbing out of the cab to sitting in a corner banquette beneath the authentic tin ceiling to tasking a fabulous appetizer and enjoying everything from octopus ink pasta to fresh trout to their famous (and divine) liver and onions! Fabulous dinner!
