I went to NoNa mid-week to catch-up with a friend who was in from out of town. We sat in a cozy booth off to the side, and were warmly welcomed when we arrived. Service was attentive, and the menu offered some really imaginative courses. We started with the burrata (heavenly) and followed with shared pasta courses. The Maltagliati were flavourful and earthy, which contrasted against the full flavours of the salt cod spaghetti. Our main course, Sablefish with Fennel, was a very coherent dish. If there was one inconsistency to the evening, it was that both our fish courses were heavily salted, which detracted from what I’m sure would otherwise have been my favourite items on the menu. Altogether an enjoyable dining experience.
À la hauteur de sa réputation, ce resto nous a tout simplement enchantés. Un très bel endroit pour commencer une soirée.
Loved everything. Service was excellent. Love a good mixed drink but I didn’t particularly like theirs. Would recommend wine instead. They have a great corner table for couples (will request it next time).
So we loved it. The food was so tasty and original. The waiter was professional and knowledgeable but not intrusive. It was quiet but not dead. It really needs to be for the well-heeled or the special occasion because the dinner was not inexpensive (but worth it!).
This was our first time at North and Navy and it was incredible. From the moment we walked in, everything was exceptional. The atmosphere is a fun vibe, the food is impeccable and the service (our server Vincent) was top notch. We can’t wait to go back!
First and foremost, the food was excellent and the service attentive. However the menu mostly in Italian and needed explaining, but staff pushed for wine order ahead of selection. Where we were seated, the chairs were not comfortable for a leisurely meal, so we had coffee and dessert elsewhere. Still well worth the visit.
My wife and I finally got out to have a belated Valentine's dinner at North and Navy and we had fun. The waitress was friendly and gave a full detailed description of everything on the short menu, so we didn't have to tax our limited Italian too much. We started with apertivo drinks: she had a Prosecco and I had a large spicy Caesar, with oddly complex accoutrements. For antipasti, I had the Zucchini with Buratta and she had the Seared Eggplant & House Yoghurt. They were scrumptious, and definitely the best part of the meal. For primi, I had Spaghetti e Baccala and my wife had Spelt Farfalle with Artichoke. They were tasty, but mine was very buttery/salty, and they were the part of the meal I might skip next time. At that point we decided against secondi (too full) and went right to dolce: Ricotta & Passonfruit Pizzelle for me, and Nutella Marquise with Italian Meringue for her. Altogether a lovely experience, nice warm quiet table, interesting dishes and cutlery (they use mismatched antiques), and well worth the wait.
Our family chose North and Navy to celebrate an anniversary and were very pleased. The service was excellent: knowledgeable and thoughtful. Our server suggested peppermint tea when she recognized I had a very sore throat, though it’s not a usual before dinner drink. She carefully described the menu items and portion sizes for us. The food was excellent as well. The combinations of ingradients were perfect. I especially remember the pop of pomegranate seeds in on dish that surprised me with their sweeetness but fit well with the other ingredients. The ambiance at the restaurant is lovely. Our teenage daughter was especially taken with the decor. It was our second visit to the restaurant and we very much look forward to the next.
Food was terrific but music was so loud that people had to talk loud to be heard above it, leading even more noise. The front room could use some acoustic tiles to deaden sound. Also the heat was cranked up way too high.
Too much acid... dishes lacked balance. Mains were ok but the appies and pasta were disapointing.
The food was great, would recommend to check out North & Navy and enjoy a nice evening with loved ones. Next time I would just try all of the pasta dishes.
We had a lovely meal with excellent service at the chef’s table. It was a treat watching the kitchen at work.
Food was great.
Short staff meant that we didn't see our waitress too often.
Superb. Pascal is wonderful. I love this restaurant.
Our server was very knowledgeable and had excellent suggestions for wine pairings.
This was the first Sunday NoNa has been open. They had a smaller menu focused on Family style sharing. Three of us chose the $38 'let NoNa pick', tasting menu which for us came with a big salad, warm olives, salami, and blood oranges as appetizers and lasagne, eggplant parmagian, and 'gravy' (spaghetti in tomato sauce with assorted meats) as mains. Despite the sharing style, they didn't give us serving utensils, which made for a less refined experience (serving ourselves spaghetti from the shared plate with our eating forks)
I was so happy with our experience there on Friday night! Perhaps I could have ticked off more boxes above, but I was not really looking for assess those when I was there. The food I chose was excellent, the wine was wonderful (we know what we like and were pleased with the help in pairing the wine with the food), the ambience was great, the service was attentive but not smothering and very knowledgeable............all excellent! Thank you!
Took my boyfriend here for his birthday and had a wonderful experience. The service was amazing and you could tell they cared deeply about our experience.
Good food, good service, unique menu
Only quibble, having made a reservation well in advance, we were to be seated at quite possibly the worst table in the restaurant. Heavy traffic flow and near the door, there were obviously better tables that were free. After showing dissatisfaction with that table we were given a much better location. It felt like we were walk-in customers just shoved somewhere.
Just a point that this was slightly annoying to begin, otherwise nice evening
As usual, the food, service and drinks were wonderful.
Great food and such nice decor and ambience. Will definitely return next time I am in town. The trout was awesome!
Amazing service from start to finish. Delightful meal.
Had a great night out. However we had some misses and everything was a bit on the pricier side.
The things that were good were amazing!
I really wanted to like this restaurant more than I did. Set in the former house of Beckta, the decor is lovely, and the house historic. Unfortunately that does come with some very chilly spots during the cold winter months (especially near the door), but most of the restaurant is very comfortable. The service was very, very good. I can't criticize the wait staff and Maitre-D. They tried very hard, and were very kind. I simply didn't love the food, and that's probably personal taste.
Firstly, it was difficult to choose from the menu. The menu has the name of the dish, but it's impossible to tell what's in the dish, since most of it is in Italian without subtext beneath it. This required detailed explanation in the form of a long speech by the (very patient) waitress.
The food itself wasn't to my taste. The appetizers I had weren't bad: the Corzetti with Walnuts & Honey was nice, and we shared the Cichèti Plate, some of which was pretty good (while others were just okay). I was very disappointed by my main dish, the Venetian Liver and Onions. I think I probably anticipated chopped liver. This was the full liver, and I felt it was chewy and a bit tough. The Nutella Marquise dessert was very nice, but again, I was underwhelmed.
One final annoyance was the noise level in the restaurant. Beckta was always quiet and classy. For some reason North and Navy was very loud. We had a couple join another couple next to us. They crunched into a 2-person seating area, and were very loud, disrupting our peaceful meal. I'm not sure what can be done about that, but I wish the wait-staff had asked the other couple to keep it down, or move the party of 4 to a new table.
I'm glad I tried North and Navy, but can't say that I recommend it.
Amazing ambience! Food was innovative yet humble/simplistic. I totally recommend this spot!
Great everything. Only one comment - for the price you pay the quantities are too small.
Very nice place, discrete and authentic cuisine! The wine list is broad and gives ample choice, as well as the diversity of the menu. It was also surprising that depending on the choice you make, the bill can be surprising affordable for such quality!
One of our favourites! If you love food you will love N&N. If you love talking about food, this is your place. So many options and beautiful flavours. You may tempted to go back and thank the chef for pleasantly surprising you with every plate. They take some good old standards, treat them respect and then bring them a new fun level. The servers are very knowledgeable, attentive and welcoming. The atmosphere is beautiful, cozy, homey and charming. Can’t wait to go back.
In Ottawa? GO HERE! My lady and I took an impromptu NYE weekend trip to Ottawa to ring in the New Year from Washington DC. Read about this restaurant in a blog from our hotel and what an amazing spot. I am in the restaurant industry and my girl works in the wine industry and we were both really just smitten with the restaurant. Stellar ambiance, food was killer, service was a bit spotty from our waitress but the GM/Somm knew everything and was totally on point with recs. Oh and the Bartender was really talented and made superb cocktails....seriously, eat here.
This is one helluva dining experience.
We no longer go out just to eat. We cook at home for that.
We go out for dining experiences, even in minus 25 degree C temperatures.
It was our first visit to North and Navy but it wint be the last.
Knowing it was our anniversary, they welcomed us with complimentary Proseeco.
From there we were treated as honored guests as we enjoyed three courses, beautifully prepared, served and staged.
The whole evening was a wonderful experience.
We will be back
We really enjoyed our evening and the food was delicious and well prepared and the service was second to none. I would definitely go back to North and Navy again.
We were four people, celebrating a birthday. Interesting menu, lots of variety. The hits were zucchini noodles with burrata, polpette, potato tortaletti, liver and onions. Another green salad option might be nice in appetizers. Knowledgable, friendly service. Nice atmosphere, cozy and not too loud-- a comfortable spot to eat, drink and enjoy conversation.
We were seated next to a group of 10, it was somewhat noisy. It was rather hard to hear each other at times. We enjoyed our food but the pasta dish was a little rubbery in texture; the salt cod filling was tasty. The service was good, the decor was understated Christmas. It was our anniversary and we did enjoy ourselves but we both felt that it was a one time visit.
What a wonderful evening! Amazing food, expertly crafted and plated, served at the right temperature. Comfortable, non pretentious atmosphere, staff genuinely seemed to enjoy themselves at work. Will definitely be recommending this to friends who visit Ottawa. I do not have the opportunity to go out to dinner very often; so when I do, I do not like to be disappointed. North and Navy did not disappoint! Thank you, and keep up the good work!
Quaint repurposed house just off Bank Street. It was fancy without being excessively ornate and vintage without being excessively kitsch. The mushroom tagliatelle was outstanding. Prepare to spend though.
Fantastic food, attentive and knowledgeable service. NoNa is hands down the best Italian in Ottawa, and one of my favourite restaurants. Even on a snowy Monday, the crew was killing it. Delicious!
Excellent Meal! Waiter very knowledgeable. I am not sure you could wrong with any of the dishes!!
It was, as usual, an overall wonderful
