This was our first time visiting this restaurant in a few years. We suggested it to our friends for a birthday lunch celebration.
We have dined at many of the Oliver and Bonacini restaurants over the years including this one many many times. How disappointing it was today. Our reservation was for 12:30. Firstly our friend ordered the Rueben sandwich and was told it was sold out. Secondly I ordered a Caesar salad half-order as suggested by the server. Regular was $12.00 and a small cup which was deemed a half order was $7.50. Shame. I specifically ordered Mac and cheese. It was loaded with breadcrumbs atop and was totally dried out. Shame. The server came with a muffin and Happy Birthday for our celebration. Embarrassing !!!!
Very disappointing experience.
After many years of seeing ads of this place, I've finally decided to give it a try even though most people I know have rated it below average. And they were right, I didnt miss out. The first thing I've noticed as I was being seated was the decor being mediocre. This was location is very family oriented with seniors everywhere. Nothing wrong with that but the restaurant didnt have that intimate feel that I thought it would.
The food took quite some time before arriving. I had ordered white wine and I was half done (slowly sipping) before the waitress even remembered the complimentary bread. I usually never touch the bread so this didnt really matter. However , the waitress brought over the bread saying she's "terribly sorry for the delay since they're really "backed-up" so here's some complimentary bread". The restaurant was not busy at all! There is no excuse as to why there should be a big delay. I am not expecting my food in 5minutes but i dont expect to wait over 30mins either. Also, the menu selection was very limited and average. Ended with a burger from the special summer menu, fish and chips and alaskan sole. Nothing really jumped out. The burger was ok. Fish and chips batter was a little too right-lack of crunch. Alaskan sole was the biggest disappointment- looks like it's been frozen for a long while. It was mushy inside and all I tasted was butter. I cannot taste anything but pure butter. (I'm not here to eat a butter stick) By the way, the side vegetables were also very greasy. So overall, I'd pass on this one. I only came here because the other restaurant was full and didnt want to wait another 45mins. Plus I've never had o&b so why not, which I now regret.
Great. Always a nice place for a great lunch.
I have dined here many times and this particular time was craving the grilled calamari. I was telling my friend how good it was so we ordered the dinner portion to share along with other appetizers. When we received it, it tasted very different from other times, it was almost poached like, aside from grilled. it was very bland and a little fishy so we requested some balsamic and hot sauce. We were asked why and we explained so the nice lady that questioned it (not our waiter for the evening) apologized and said she would order us another one and ensure it's grilled properly. We were very appreciative and graciously accepted. Unfortunately, upon receipt of the second piece of calamari, it was grilled a little more but extremely unseasoned and rubbery (likely due to the fact it was grilled longer). We couldn't eat that one either so we were quite disappointed, especially since this was the particular dish we were craving :) -- in any event, the cauliflower bites were dynamite and the bottle of chianti was too.
Perhaps the grilling technique for the calamari should be tweaked somehow.
We had a great dining experience! Thanks to the staff for making us feel welcome. It was my daughters' 13th birthday and they really went above and beyond to make her feel special. Happy she chose O&B for her family celebration!
Great night! It was my mother’s birthday and our server made her feel really special.
It’s always a pleasure to dine here! The food was incredible, the service quick and concise. Looking forward to going back again very soon.
Great food and service.
Live nearby but only have had brunch here so far. Had dinner here with my wife and son and daughter in law. It was quite noisy to start with but quietened down as people left. Our server was truly outstanding, she was charming, attentive and efficient at all times even though very busy. The food was excellent as was the (somewhat limited) selection of beers. Good value sale on some good wines. A very good, memorable meal. My only improvement would be to introduce some shorts such as grappa, limoncello or calvados.
But with reservations! If you are quite deaf (I am but have 2hearing aids) the noise level where we were sitting was such that I had trouble hearing our conversation (while clearly hearing the man 2 tables away!)
Oliver & Bonacini is a usual go-to, with a very wide variety on the menu.
This particular time it seemed way overpriced and very poor service, and nothing offered to make up for it.
Will reconsider another visit, if at all, but suppose we should have informed management as well.
A bit loud but food was good. Can’t go wrong eating at O & B
Perhaps for lunch only. Not for dinner
It’s very quiet for evening. No music playing
Fryer was on the fritz which eliminated many food choices - hard to fathom. Disappointed with that but while not our 1st choices of food, O & B food is always good.
Business lunch as stated in original reservation but seated near two tables with families with young children . One was already there and the other seated 5 minutes after us -- other sections were available. A bit annoying but no biggie.
Pleasant atmosphere and attentive service. The meal was well done. I only took one star off (half not an option) because the Salmon Tartar appetizer was a little grisly on the salmon. I'm sure they would have taken back if I asked but I will with a group and didn't want to stand out.
Diana our server was very attentive to our needs and was very pleasant.
Went with our 2 young boys. Our server was amazing as they always are at O&B. Food was great and arrived fast and was so delicious. Never disappointed when we eat there!!
A good Sunday brunch menu. Excellent staff. The noise level is a little too high for my liking but considering how busy it is it’s understandable
The fried calamari we ordered was overly cooked and dry. The grilled calamari we ordered did not have a good sear.
The mains we had, a burger and pasta were done well. The food was not bad, but definitely nothing memorable.
The four of us were very disappointed. I expected more given this is Oliver and Bonacini and frequent their establishments regularly. Perhaps Breakfast is not their fortey. 2 of us had the O&B breakfast and 2 of us had the Eggs Benedict. The O&B breakfast is definitely not worth $16.00. The sausage is overly salted and 'greyish' and skinny - it can barely be considered a sausage. The bacon was burnt to a crisp and instead of "Toast" we got hot bread with literally no "toasting" at all. Coffee was awful and tasted burned. The Eggs Benedict has way too much ham on it and both guests said they tasted more like ham sandwiches than Eggs Benedict. There was barely any Hollandaise sauce on both dishes. Given the number of fab restaurants in Toronto for Breakfast with more reasonable pricing for high quality food, I wouldn't recommend O&B to anyone.
Took forever for waitress to take my order. Cashing out too forever too
We were very disappointed. Steak was tough to cut and under cooked, sole was swimming in butter, liver was mealy. We gave it a second chance after Valentines experience was a disappointment. Despite historically good experiences, we're taking it off our list of accessible restaurants that we can enjoy given our last 2 visits.
The staff went out of their way to accommodate my food restrictions.
Food was great.
Surprised to see it so quiet for a Friday night but it was better for us. Great food and friendly service. Hostess could have used some smile lessons lol.
Service is very slow
Food was good, service was good. Liver & Unions were really good
The service was great and attentive. The food was fresh and delicious. Everything was served quickly and correctly.
service was poor. kitchen was slow getting our food out. half our table without their entree for 10 minutes while the others reluctantly ate.
Nice touch with dessert for my colleague
Horrible food and service. Our waiter barely came to our table. Food was bad, avocado wasn't ripe. I used to love this place, I am not sure what happened with food and quality.
It was a quiet holiday Monday evening. I came here with a friend to celebrate her birthday. I ordered their special cocktail and my friend had a glass of wine. While she enjoyed her wine, my drink was mostly watered down with ice so it had a very little flavor. The salad we ordered was ordered as an appetizer and it was just okay. For a main meal, my friend ordered spaghetti with meatball which she finished happily. I ordered steak dish. Even though i requested medium, one side was completely well done and only the end part was cooked medium. Needless to say, I did not enjoy the meal at all but my friend did.
I would not recommend this restaurant.
Another visit another very enjoyable lunch. Service was a bit slow this time but the food excellent as usual.
Such a wonderful restaurant. Always consistent with the quality of food and service.
Great food; wonderful service! Will definitely return again!
I have lunch often at this restaurant.
It’s a great place for some shopping and lunch with girlfriends.
2 entrees had little flavour. Fish was dry. Would not return.
This wasn't our best experience. The service was ok. Nothing special. My husband ordered a Ceasar Drink in a Large glass, like a Coke glass and they brought this little skinny glass, but asked very quickly if he wanted another. He ordered the Tuna Nis...salad. It was a main course but was so small, looked like an appetizer portion. He was not happy. One of the men ordered a Diet Coke, he asked 3 times before it came. As I said, not our best experience.
Steak on fries doesn’t work.
We went because we had a gift card.
I guess we were expecting a bit higher food quality.
Our dinner was on the final evening of Summerlicious. While our starters and desserts were excellent, the mains did not reach their potential; possibly because they were missing several ingredients that were listed on the menu. Service was a bit haphazard and one cocktail tasted of coloured water with no flavour. Despite these disappointments, we will likely return, as the menus are usually creative and the food properly cooked.
